Just because the 2018 BMW M5 comes with standard all-wheel drive doesn’t mean it can’t engage in some tail-out antics. Thanks to its 2WD mode, the latest M5 is capable of channeling its 600-hp twin-turbocharged V-8’s 553 lb-ft of torque solely to the rear wheels.

We presume it was in this mode that BMW driving instructor Johan Schwartz drifted a 2018 M5 around the skidpad at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, for 232.5 miles. The distance earned Schwartz and the new M5 a place in the Guinness World Records for the record of “greatest distance vehicle drift in eight hours.” Schwartz’s drift also bettered a recent record attempt for “longest continuous vehicle drift” set by Jesse Adams of South Africa, who drifted 102.5 miles in a Toyota GT86 last year.

The world record for drifting strikes us as a somewhat dubious accomplishment in the grand scheme of automotive achievements, but we have to tip our hats to the ingenuity BMW employed in its quest to guarantee that Schwartz wouldn’t need to stop for fuel during his record-breaking eight-hour drift. The German automaker worked with the North Carolina vehicle fabricator Detroit Speed to craft a custom refueling system modeled after the kind that fighter jets use, which can be topped off in flight.

Although fighter jets manage to do this deed without human intervention, Detroit Speed’s Matt Butts served as an intermediary between the 2018 M5 driven by Schwartz and a previous-generation M5 fuel car driven by Matt Mullins, chief driving instructor at the BMW Performance Center. Five separate times, Mullins drifted parallel to Schwartz while Butts, held in place by a safety tether, emerged from the rear window to refuel the 2018 M5 in mid-drift.

While a record-breaking eight-hour drift should have been enough of a success for BMW to call it a day, the German automaker wasn’t ready to pop champagne just yet. After Schwartz’s solo drift, Schwartz and Mullins drifted side by side for 49.3 miles over the course of an hour, earning BMW and its two drivers the record for the “longest twin-vehicle drift (water assisted).”

Do either of these world records alter our initial thoughts about the 2018 BMW M5? Not at all. Nevertheless, the two drifting records did give us a newfound respect for the driving skills of Johan Schwartz and Matt Mullins and the cojones of Matt Butts.

A service worker at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo international airport has been apparently very excited with the first huge snowfall in the Russian capital, cutting quite a figure with his vehicle performing maneuvers in-between other ground support equipment and a plane.

A baggage loader was filmed “drifting” at the airport by one of the passengers on Tuesday, when snowfall hit the Russian capital. “This is how happy workers at Sheremetyevo are about the first snow,” Maksim Ivanov wrote on Facebook, having shared the video he filmed from a gate.

“At least they haven’t damaged the plane,” he added, saying that the scene reminded him of Formula One racing. After having performed a number of quite impressive – but apparently idle – moves, narrowly avoiding collision in the packed, snow-covered airport grounds, the driver sped up and disappeared from the frame.

“It was his last working day,” a social media user suggested in comments. “It’s time to let him operate a plane,” another one wrote.

That man Ken Block has another Gymkhana video out today. This time, instead of drifting his way through a city or abandoned factory, he’s upped the stakes. You see, Mr. Block took his Ford Mustang up to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. Yes, that Pikes Peak, the one that runs up the side of a mountain, much of it above the tree line, with few guardrails and thousand-foot drops off the side.

You will recognize Block’s 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR from few years ago when he released his Gymkhana Seven video. Back then, his Mustang was powered by a “nonsensical” 845hp (630kW) naturally aspirated 6.7L V8. But last year, the Hoonicorn got an upgrade. Now it sports a pair of turbochargers too large to be contained by the hood, and it uses methanol as a fuel. The result is 1,400hp (1044kW)—presumably at sea level, anyway.

Few things in life are as uniquely stressful as pulling into first place in Mario Kart, only to hear a Blue Shell hurtling at you from behind. There’s no escape – all you can do is close your eyes and accept your inevitable defeat. That experience is going to get infinitely more dreadful for players who visit the VR Zone in Shinjuku, Japan: Bandai Namco has developed a version of Mario Kart for the HTC Vive, complete with the tiny pseudo-cars for players to plop down into.

At this point we don’t know a whole lot about the game: it appears briefly in the trailer above, where players use wrist-mounted Vive trackers to hurl items at opponents. Meanwhile, an official listing on the VR Zone website says “the course is filled with the well-known Mario Kart traps and tricks,” which is about the least illuminating thing anyone could say about the same. Given how well racing titles like Project Cars fare in virtual reality, though, we’re pretty confident that this version of Mario Kart is going to be a damn good time. And for what it’s worth, Japan Times reporter Kazuaki Nagata seemed to enjoy playing an early version of the game.

While this is the first major Nintendo property to take the leap into VR, it’s not clear to what extent Nintendo actually worked on this. True fans will remember that Bandai Namco developed the Mario Kart Arcade GP series in the mid-2000s; Nintendo mostly handled the publishing. In any case, it’s not hard to look at this as a VR test balloon for one of the world’s most prominent video game companies. Sony has already marked its territory with the launch of PlayStation VR, and Microsoft has dumped considerable time and effort into its alternate reality work… even if it doesn’t seem like the powerful new Xbox One X will support VR soon.

In any case, it was smart of Nintendo to let one of its most social franchises dive into VR first. As we recently learned after a trip to HTC’s Viveland arcade, social VR experiences can be far, far more fun than immersive games where you’re basically left to your own devices.

It takes a very specific mindset to fully enjoy the genre mix that Alkemi’s Drifting Lands brings to the table, but if you can stand the repetition, its gameplay loop of shooting and looting can be positively mesmerizing.

Taking its inspirations both from classic horizontal shoot ’em ups and loot-heavy action RPGs, Drifting Lands has you flying your ship through increasingly difficult levels while picking up shiny new stuff. Inbetween missions, you’ll equip new parts, sell the ones you don’t need, and redistribute your stats in order to make your flying killer machine ever more efficient, which is very satisfying.

There a different skills you can acquire and tailor to your preferred way of playing. From a powerful short-range attack to a bunch of fireballs surrounding you or a bullet-reflecting shield, there’s quite a bit of variety, further complemented by a set of passive skills which allow for all kinds of fun builds. Despite this being a shoot ’em up, getting up close and personal is definitely an option with the right set of skills.

The game is intentionally light on story, it’s all about gameplay. And make no mistake, this is a grind, an endlessly repeating series of levels and enemies. This is not something you play for the thrill of mastering a difficult level with limited lives, this is a game you play to zone out. You do have to pay attention to the onscreen action, but it’s not like you have to actively keep a long-term strategy in mind or something like that. Just survive the onslaught, that’s all.

If you get shot down, you lose whatever loot you just picked up, but other than that the game lets you try as often as you like. Let your mind wander, shoot stuff, get rewards – this is a loop I can fully get behind. It feels good. Changes to this formula are introduced so slowly and gradually that you won’t really be aware of them.

On the one hand, this doesn’t interrupt the flow, on the other hand it sometimes adds to that feeling of repetition. A little more variation in enemy design would greatly benefit the game. That’s not to say that it looks bad. Far from it: the level backgrounds in particular are lovely and the whole presentation is well done, with some rather charming character design.

Drifting Lands hits a sweet spot for me and I already lost a few very enjoyable hours to its pleasant loop of shooting and looting. The developer is patching the game quite regularly, adding both balance fixes as well as new content every few days, so I guess I’ll be playing this one for a while. While your expectations for shmups might be different, you could do worse than to check out the demo – you might find this to be an interesting genre mix and an excellent game to tune out to.
