Just because the 2018 BMW M5 comes with standard all-wheel drive doesn’t mean it can’t engage in some tail-out antics. Thanks to its 2WD mode, the latest M5 is capable of channeling its 600-hp twin-turbocharged V-8’s 553 lb-ft of torque solely to the rear wheels.
–
We presume it was in this mode that BMW driving instructor Johan Schwartz drifted a 2018 M5 around the skidpad at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, for 232.5 miles. The distance earned Schwartz and the new M5 a place in the Guinness World Records for the record of “greatest distance vehicle drift in eight hours.” Schwartz’s drift also bettered a recent record attempt for “longest continuous vehicle drift” set by Jesse Adams of South Africa, who drifted 102.5 miles in a Toyota GT86 last year.
–
–
The world record for drifting strikes us as a somewhat dubious accomplishment in the grand scheme of automotive achievements, but we have to tip our hats to the ingenuity BMW employed in its quest to guarantee that Schwartz wouldn’t need to stop for fuel during his record-breaking eight-hour drift. The German automaker worked with the North Carolina vehicle fabricator Detroit Speed to craft a custom refueling system modeled after the kind that fighter jets use, which can be topped off in flight.
–
Although fighter jets manage to do this deed without human intervention, Detroit Speed’s Matt Butts served as an intermediary between the 2018 M5 driven by Schwartz and a previous-generation M5 fuel car driven by Matt Mullins, chief driving instructor at the BMW Performance Center. Five separate times, Mullins drifted parallel to Schwartz while Butts, held in place by a safety tether, emerged from the rear window to refuel the 2018 M5 in mid-drift.

While a record-breaking eight-hour drift should have been enough of a success for BMW to call it a day, the German automaker wasn’t ready to pop champagne just yet. After Schwartz’s solo drift, Schwartz and Mullins drifted side by side for 49.3 miles over the course of an hour, earning BMW and its two drivers the record for the “longest twin-vehicle drift (water assisted).”

Do either of these world records alter our initial thoughts about the 2018 BMW M5? Not at all. Nevertheless, the two drifting records did give us a newfound respect for the driving skills of Johan Schwartz and Matt Mullins and the cojones of Matt Butts.

The long-serving Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov apparently decided to add extreme driving to his already long list of his talents. The Central Asian country’s leader was filmed drifting a BMW M3 on a racetrack.
A video published by a local Turkmen news agency shows the 60-year-old president visiting a racing track to inspect the new rides recently purchased for the country’s Interior Ministry. Known to his people as Arkadag, or ‘the Protector,’ Berdimuhamedov chose one of the cars, which just happened to be a high-performance sports version of the BMW 3 Series, and personally tested it on the track.
Not only did he circle the track at high speed, but also showed off his drifting skills in the mould of a true street racer.
Expertly driving fast cars is, however, far from being the Turkmen leader’s only passion. In October, he was seen inspecting new buildings in Turkmenistan’s capital while mounted on a magnificent steed. Berdimuhamedov was riding his favorite stallion Miras, with whom he beat the country’s best jockeys in a premier horse race earlier in 2017, local media reported.
Music also appears to be another of his talents, as in January, he performed self-penned songs while strumming his guitar on prime-time national television.
The multi-talented leader also recently demonstrated that he’s a more than able Commander in Chief and Defense Minister, with a recent video showing him clad in full commando uniform flinging knives at a paper target without missing even once.
Berdimuhamedov is currently serving his third term as President of Turkmenistan. He was re-elected in February after parliament amended the constitution last year, enabling him to serve unlimited terms in office.

Ford must really like the word “drift,” as well as the vehicular sliding it describes, a lot. The all-wheel-drive, turbocharged Ford Focus RS hot hatch has a Drift mode, in which more power is sent to the rear axle than typical and apportioned between the left and right rear wheels to enable silly, smoky oversteer. Now, RS owners can add more drifticality in the form of Ford Performance’s all-new “Drift Stick,” introduced during the 2017 SEMA show.
–
Essentially an electronically controlled, quick-releasing parking brake, the widget enables Focus RS drivers to pull a lever and lock up the rear wheels to initiate a drift. If you’ve ever seen one of Ken Block’s Gymkhana videos, the concept should be familiar, only Block’s cars utilize a heavier-duty hydraulically actuated rear-axle brake. Since installing a similar setup in a normal car is arduous, Ford came up with a different, easier-to-implement solution.
–

–
For the most part, the Drift Stick consists of additional code that’s loaded into the RS’s electronic brain via the diagnostic port. The included aluminum lever is installed at the end of the RS’s existing mechanical parking-brake handle, though the two operate independently and act on separate systems. To wit, pulling the Drift Stick not only locks the rear brakes, it decouples the rear axle from the front. Presto, you have the beginnings of a drift, a spin, or simply really unstable straight-line braking with full cooperation from the anti-lock brakes and powertrain. Because the all-wheel-drive system’s clutches that send power to the rear axle when closed are left open during each Drift Stick pull, you can stay on the gas; no need to clutch-kick for the event.

–
–
Before you go running to purchase Ford’s $ 999 Drift Stick kit, keep in mind that the automaker intends the feature for “track use only.” At the same time, nothing—except perhaps actual laws—is keeping you from yanking your parking brake when cruising around town, so you could hoon at your discretion, although we didn’t tell you to do so. And Ford will even honor your Focus RS’s warranty with the Drift Stick installed.

US lawmakers jumped at the chance to give their opinions about President Donald Trump’s decision to decertify the Iran nuclear deal. Some were delighted with Trump’s stance on the deal, while others see the decision as the first step to war with Iran.
On Friday, many high-level Democratic lawmakers vehemently disagreed with Trump’s decision to decertify the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, and voiced their concerns to the public.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California), who worked hand-in-hand with the administration of former President Barack Obama to pass the JCPOA in 2015, called Trump’s announcement a “grave mistake” during a press conference on Friday.
“I say the Iran nuclear agreement was the best way to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear armed state,” Pelosi said. “The president, I think, is being frivolous with this.”
Representative Adam Schiff (D-California), who was a vocal supporter of the deal before it passed in 2015, released a written statement denouncing Trump’s position on the agreement.
Senator Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) also came out against the president on Friday with a storm of tweets of his own. The lawmaker said it is now up to congress to “stop this drift toward war,” making reference to the possibility of the US backing out of the deal.
President Trump’s refusal to certify the Iran deal is the latest in a series of reckless moves that make Americans less safe.
— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) October 13, 2017
“Trump’s own top security officials say Iran is meeting its commitments under the deal and that it is in the security interests of the US,” Sanders tweeted. “Congress should listen to what virtually the entire national security community is saying – that the Iran deal is working – and protect it.”
Sanders supported the JCPOA in 2015 before it was signed into law, but stated that it is not “a perfect agreement,” according to a 2015 interview on CBS’ ‘Face The Nation’ program, the Washington Post reported.
The senator also said in the 2015 interview that the only alternative to the agreement is “war,” and support for the deal would “give peace a chance.”
Former Vice President Joe Biden, who was President Obama’s second-in-command when the JCPOA was formally passed, gave his two cents on the implications of a US exit from the agreement.
John Kerry, who served as Secretary of State under when the deal was signed into law, released a written statement and a tweet on Friday reacting to the far-reaching decision..
As secretary of state, Kerry was instrumental in gaining support from legislators in the months leading up to the eventual passage of the JCPOA in 2015. Kerry plead with lawmakers in groups such as the House Foreign Affairs Committee to get them to support the deal.
Not everyone is hammering the president about Friday’s announcement.
Trump’s former deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka, and Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), fully support the president’s stance on the JCPOA.
Cotton, one of the more hawkish Republicans in the Senate, released a written statement on Friday praising the commander-in-chief.
The Republican-controlled Congress will now have 60 days in which they can reimpose sanctions against Iran that were put on hold during the 2015 agreement. This can be done through a majority vote now that Trump has decertified the deal.

The JCPOA is an agreement that was signed into law on October 18, 2015, between Iran, five permanent member countries of the United Nations Security Council (including the US) and the European Union. The main focus of the deal is to have Iran agree to cut back on parts of its civilian nuclear program, in exchange for relief from sanctions imposed against them.

The UTV, or side-by-side, is becoming a popular motorized machine, and drivers are doing some impressive things with them. We’ve even seen Gymkhana– or Recoil-caliber videos featuring the little off-roaders. So it makes sense that Top Gear America would take a look at side-by-sides to find out what they’re like and which is the best.
Of course, being a Top Gear show, the hosts aren’t the amazing driving demons that we’ve seen in other places. In the exclusive clip above, you’ll see them roll up to something called Fishtail Mountain. It’s basically a tall, fairly steep hill, and the goal is to do a powerslide as close to the top as possible. Unsurprisingly, only the drag racer, Antron, seems to be confident in doing this.
The clip only shows the hill contest, but the full comparison will air this Sunday during the latest episode of the show. Besides the side-by-sides, the hosts will learn about lowriders and lowrider culture, while the Stig will go for a spin in the Toyota Land Speed Cruiser. That would be the 2,000-horsepower, 220-mph Land Cruiser Toyota built for SEMA last year. The full episode airs Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern time on BBC America.

Controlling your superbike through procedurally-generated tracks, every stage in Hyperun is a test of reflexes and precision timing, chaining boost pads and drifting at the perfect moments to maintain speed. Drifting in Hyperun isn’t a graceful arc, but a hefty direction change around angular turns and along huge loops.
Mistime your turn or position on the track, and you’ll just as likely to wipe out in a stylized explosion as you are to lose your speed through bumps and crashes. But master drifting and turns and you’ll be able to reach incredible speeds that turn the track into a blur. Vehicle customization lets you mold your bike’s performance while doing flips and spins mid-air build up your score to climb the leaderboards.
Hyperun is available for $ 9.99 on Steam and Itch.io; ou can find more details on the game and developer Concrete Games on their site, Twitter, and Facebook page.

May bank holiday is finally here, and with temperatures of 30 degrees expected it is going to be a scorcher.
Whilst soaring temperatures mean fun in the sun, difficulties lie when it comes to bedtime.
Experts warn that sleeping in high temperatures can lead to fragmented sleep as you are likely to wake up during the night, preventing you from getting a restful night.
Sleep doctor Nerina Ramlakhan says: “Ideally, in order for us to sleep well, there needs to be a fractional temperature difference between our body and our brain – a warm body and a cool head!”
Dr Nerina, Silentnight’s sleep expert, shared her favourite tips to help the nation beat the heat and stay well rested in the hot and humid weather including wearing wet socks to bed.
“Sleep in cool wet socks or even a damp T-shirt,” Dr Nerina suggests to cool down.
We all know how great it feels to flip your pillow over onto the cool side, but have you ever thought of this?
“Chill your pillow case in the freezer before going to bed,” Dr Nerina suggests.
Wash your feet with cold water before getting into bed, and rinse wrists under cold water
If you wake up in the night, rub a menthol stick on your forehead to help cool down
Place a wet flannel in the fridge for an hour or so before you go to bed, and rest this on your forehead as you drift off
Place a tray of ice in front of a blowing fan. As the ice melts, this will help to cool the room down
Keep a plant mister beside your bed. If the heat is becoming unbearable, gently spray yourself with water to assist the cooldown
Keep curtains and blinds shut. This will help prevent your bedroom from overheating.
Swap heavier duvets for lighter duvets and sheets, such as 4.5 tog
Think about your mattress options, as many are now designed to prevent the body from overheating.
Stay hydrated, it is important to remember to drink lots of water throughout the day time
Don’t fret. If you are struggling to sleep, it’s important to instead try and rest, thinking positively about the day ahead rather than worrying about the lack of sleep.
Sleep is more important than ever because recent studies claim our beauty sleep really does prevent us from becoming ugly.
Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is maybe the purest Fast and Furious movie. For starters, there’s a real passion for driving in Justin Lin‘s sequel; it’s not about saving the world. It’s still a crime story, but a crime story with a whole lot of impassioned drifting – all of which Vin Diesel was originally meant to perform.
Screenwriter Chris Morgan has recently explained the Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift origin story and it’s a fascinating one. This is the movie that placed this series on the right track.
Diesel chose xXx over reprising his role as Dominic Toretto in 2 Fast 2 Furious. When the time came to produce another sequel, Morgan pitched “Toretto goes to Tokyo.” The screenwriter told Uproxx Toretto would “go out and learn drifting,” and “there was a murder he had to solve.” The Universal brass said a Diesel-led sequel wasn’t in the cards, but in the end, Diesel did have a brief cameo in Tokyo Drift.
Originally, the screenwriter didn’t even get the Fast and Furious 3 job. He went in, pitched Dom in Tokyo, and heard “thanks, but no thanks” from Universal. A week later, the studio was intrigued, except Morgan had one clear instruction: set Tokyo Drift in High School. Here’s Morgan’s account of the experience as told to Collider:
So I pitched a big complicated thing like that, and they said, ‘Yeah, the drifting is cool but I don’t think we’re gonna get Vin back on this, this is smaller.’ The budget was so low, so low, and it was potentially a straight-to-DVD movie. They were like, ‘Listen, I don’t think this is gonna work out, but thanks anyway.’ So I left, didn’t get the job, and like a week-and-a-half later I get a phone call from Kirschenbaum and he’s like, ‘Hey, man, what was that thing called again, drifting? What was that? Would you come in and talk to me about that again?’ and I said, ‘Sure.’ So I came back in and I re-pitched it and he said, ‘Well, really what we’d like to do is set it in high-school’ and I was like, ‘You know what? God bless you, I was terrible in high-school, I don’t think I can write high-school. Go ahead and have the idea, you can just take it and we’ll work on something else together down the road.’ I was just trying to kind of foster good will. And he was like, ‘No, no, no. You know what? You’re totally right you should do the Dominic Toretto version’ and I’m like, ‘Really? That’s awesome!’ So they hired me to write it, and back then you would do two steps. So I got my first step, which was my draft that I did, they read it and I got one note back from them –they would give you their notes and then you do a re-write- and it was, ‘Great! Now set it in high-school.’ That’s where Tokyo Drift became what it was.
And so Sean Boswell (Lucas Black), Han (Sung Kang), Twinkie (Shad Moss) were born.
This fish-out-of-water story was the franchise’s least successful movie at the box office, but it’s also its most efficient, lean, and exuberant installment. While some might’ve groaned back in 2006 at the thought of a Fast and Furious pic starring High School students, the decision worked wonders for the film.
As the series has turned the “family” into the world’s beefiest saviors with the catchiest one-liners, the movies have grown bigger and longer. There are far more characters and moving pieces now than there was in Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift, which is a refreshingly simple action movie.
Justin Lin’s film doesn’t ever go big for the sake of going big, doesn’t stop for subplots or fan service, and it never comes to grinding halt to explain some loony villain’s scheme or to discuss choice theory (an actual scene in The Fate of the Furious). Some of the franchise’s greatest faults – knowing when enough is enough, for example – are nowhere to be found in Tokyo Drift.
Present, on the other hand, are some of the franchise’s most cherished hallmarks. There’s just so much car action in Tokyo Drift. In that department, the movie doesn’t disappoint. Han uses his car to flirt and get phone numbers, and even Boswell and Neela (Nathalie Kelley) grow closer when they drift together. The cars take center stage along with the characters.
Boswell and Neela’s passion for driving captures the essence the franchise without feeling like a box checked. “Everything disappears,” Neela says, in all sincerity, about the feeling behind the wheel. “No past, no future. Just the moment.” Instead of characters talking about how much they live for driving or how important family is, you feel and see all of that in Tokyo Drift.
While the aesthetic of The Fast and the Furious is a bit dated now, and we have trouble remembering much about 2 Fast 2 Furious, Tokyo Drift is aging wonderfully. Of all the movies in this franchise, this one – the cheapest of them – is the most appealing to the eye. Besides the absence of glaring CGI, Lin packs the frame with color. When Boswell goes face-to-face with the lesser Justin Timberlake in a parking garage, there’s a variety of bright, vibrant colors in each direction. Wherever you look, there’s eye candy…sweet, delicious eye candy that helps to keep our eyes glued to more grounded and personal action.
Even though the world is in peril in The Fate of the Furious, the stakes feel larger in Tokyo Drift. There’s a large body count in The Fate of the Furious that’s quickly forgotten, but the one death in Tokyo Drift actually does matter: the death of Han, who enters this franchise with an unmistakable aura of cool. It’s probably the death in the Fast and Furious series that carries the most weight, especially after watching the sequels/prequels that followed.
The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift has a lot going for it, but its greatest effect – the turning point for the franchise – wasn’t fully apparent until later on. The film gave us a fan favorite and the director who steered a sinking ship to safety. Besides just being a boatload of fun, Tokyo Drift laid the groundwork – literally with Diesel’s cameo – for what was to come, and it did so with style, a killer soundtrack, and a group of High School kids.
