Immigration activists gathered outside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-New York) home and office to protest his deal with Republicans to end the federal government shutdown without protections for so-called “dreamers.”

On Tuesday night, dozens of protesters met under the arch at Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Park before marching over to Schumer’s Prospect Park West home with signs that read “Pass a Clean Dream Act Now” and “No! Not One More Deportation!”

The marchers banged on drums and chanted in an attempt to keep the senator awake.

“If Chuck won’t let us dream, we won’t let him sleep,” they chanted repeatedly.

One activist, who claimed the protest had only been planned 25 hours prior, said they chose to protest in front of Schumer’s house because he “always notices when people protest in front of his apartment building.”

Varying reports said there were anywhere from 75 to more than a 100 protesters at the event.

The protest was organized by Indivisible, a left-wing advocacy group, along with several other groups in New York. The organizers called on Schumer to secure a long-term agreement for the legal status of immigrants brought to the country as children after he voted on a bill to end the government shutdown without any protections.

“Our community is outraged by the Senate vote to pass a temporary budget deal with no solution for Dreamers,” the organizers wrote. “Dreamers are tired of empty promises and need a legislative solution NOW!”

The protesters targeted Schumer for the deal and carried signs that said he was the “worst negotiator in Washington and Brooklyn,” along with the hashtag #SchumerSellout.

On Monday, Democrats made a deal with Republicans to fund the government through to February 8. However, many liberals were upset that the deal did not include amnesty for migrants brought into the US illegally as children.

Organizers of the protest wrote a blog Monday, describing their frustration with Schumer over a deal they said was “unacceptable.”

“In abdicating their responsibility to oversee an executive branch that is advancing white supremacy, Republican leadership should not be trusted, but forcefully opposed,” the group wrote.

The group added that if the Democrats are not able to secure protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA) recipients by February 8, they will “hold him accountable.”

A large group of protesters also took over Schumer’s office on Tuesday, chainting “fight back” in the halls.

Other protesters gathered at the offices of Senators Dean Heller (R-Nevada), Mark Warner (D-Virginia), Marco Rubio (R-Florida), Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico), and others who voted on the spending bill that did not include protections for Dreamers.

According to a press release from one of the groups that organized the protests, at least six protesters were arrested for civil disobedience at Schumer’s office.

DACA provides protection from deportation to some 700,000 immigrants who were brought into the US illegally as children. In September, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the decision to rescind the program President Barack Obama issued via executive action in 2012.

Congress was given six months to pass a law that would regulate the status of so-called ‘Dreamers.’ That program is set to expire March 5.

  • Congress is one day into its government shutdown, and lawmakers appear no closer to a deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
  • The immigration program has been a major sticking point for lawmakers, many of whom are trying to pair the issue with other immigration-related demands.

As Congress heads into the second day of a government shutdown, one of the key issues at stake is immigration, namely a program that protects hundreds of thousands of young unauthorized immigrants known as “Dreamers.”

The Trump administration is terminating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, and left Congress six months to enact some sort of replacement — and time is running out.

Though President Donald Trump and Republican leaders say they will not negotiate on immigration until the government reopens, Democrats are still pushing for a solution on DACA.

Here’s what you need to know about the program:

What is DACA?

Reuters/Mike Blake

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program shields from deportation roughly 690,000 young unauthorized immigrants by providing two-year, renewable permits. DACA was implemented by the Obama administration in 2012, after several attempts to legislate a permanent solution for Dreamers failed in Congress.

DACA does not grant immigrants a legal status in the US, but it provides work authorization and defers any immigration enforcement or removal actions they might otherwise be subject to.

Applicants to the program were only accepted if they were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012. They also had to have moved to the US before they turned 16 years old, and lived in the US continuously since 2007.

They were also required to have graduated high school or obtained a GED, or completed prior military service, and to not have any prior felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.

The Trump administration announced September 5 it would wind down the program, calling it an act of executive overreach by the Obama administration and declaring it unconstitutional.

How is DACA being phased out?

Associated Press/J. Scott Applewhite

The Trump administration gave Congress six months to enact a legislative solution, announcing last September that the program would be terminated on March 5, 2018.

The administration allowed those DACA recipients with near-term expiry dates to renew their permits one last time, so long as they applied by October 5, 2017. For a number of reasons, including mail delays, roughly 22,000 DACA recipients who were eligible to renew failed to do so on time, and advocates estimate that 122 immigrants per day have lost their DACA protections since September 5.

DACA’s phase-out was further complicated in recent weeks by a ruling from a federal judge in California who ordered the Trump administration to resume processing DACA renewal applications.

The Trump administration quickly sought to appeal that ruling to the Supreme Court and a federal appeals court, but it did not seek a stay on the California judge’s initial ruling and will therefore continue processing DACA renewals for the foreseeable future.

The uncertainty over DACA’s termination date has prompted some lawmakers, like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to argue that DACA should be excluded from funding negotiations because the program is not imminently at risk.

Immigration lawyers and advocates, however, argue that the uncertainty over DACA renewals only add urgency. Renewals can take months for the government to process, and that leaves both DACA recipients and their employers in limbo.

“It is going to be so detrimental to them, because they just don’t know. It’s hard for employers to plan,” Theda Fisher, a partner at the Withers Bergman law firm, told Business Insider. “[DACA recipients] also all live in a world of uncertainty. So if they have a car loan or a mortgage or a family here, they’re not sure if they’re going to be able to pay their bills come later this year when their work authorization expires.”

How do lawmakers feel about DACA?

Associated Press/Evan Vucci

Lawmakers on all sides of the political spectrum generally agree that DACA recipients were brought to the US through no fault of their own and grew up alongside Americans, and therefore should not face deportation en masse.

There are some exceptions, such as Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who has proposed that DACA recipients “go home” and that they could volunteer for the Peace Corps in their home countries.

King and some far-right immigration commentators argue that granting any type of “amnesty” to the DACA population would negatively impact American workers, particularly because DACA recipients are relatively well-educated, skilled, and competitive in the workforce. Economists say there is no evidence DACA recipients are systematically taking jobs away from American workers.

But in mainstream politics, the debate is not whether to let DACA recipients stay in the US, but what type of status to grant them.

Democrats believe DACA recipients should have a pathway to citizenship, and so should a broader population of unauthorized immigrants brought to the US as children who either fell outside of DACA’s age parameters or who may have been eligible for DACA but failed to apply.

Some Republicans also support a pathway to citizenship, but hard-line conservatives prefer to grant DACA recipients temporary, renewable permits, as has been suggested in a recent House GOP bill. The lawmakers fear that granting citizenship to DACA recipients would lead to the naturalization of their parents or other relatives, whom they could sponsor.

A number of tech companies and executives have voiced support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. But Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie have just given $ 33 million in support to DACA recipients, also known as Dreamers. The two just donated the money to TheDream.US, which provides scholarships to Dreamers, and their donation will give 1,000 DACA recipients money to attend college. It’s the largest donation in history of TheDream.US. “My dad came to the US when he was 16 as part of Operation Pedro Pan,” Jeff Bezos said in a statement. “He landed in this country alone and unable to speak English. With a lot of grit and determination — and the help of some remarkable organizations in Delaware — my dad became an outstanding citizen, and he continues to give back to the country that he feels blessed him in so many ways. MacKenzie and I are honored to be able to help today’s Dreamers by funding these scholarships.”

Prior to President Trump’s decision to remove DACA protections in September, hundreds of CEOs, including Bezos, signed a letter asking him to keep the program intact and many voiced their disappointment when the president decided to end protections. In October, companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon said they would lobby Congress to pass DACA protection legislation and in November, over 100 companies filed an amicus brief in support of plaintiffs aiming to reinstate DACA protections.

Dreamers receiving aid from TheDream.US get $ 33,000 in scholarships spread out over four years. “Our students are highly motivated and determined to succeed in college and in life. We’re a three-and-a-half-year-old program, so we don’t yet have graduation rates,” said the organization’s president, Candy Marshall, in a statement. “But our scholars are thriving academically. 94% return to their college after the first year; the national average is 72%. We expect a 75% graduation rate.”

“I’ll take all the heat you want. But you are not that far away from a comprehensive immigration reform,” Trump said during a televised meeting with lawmakers of both parties on Tuesday.

Trump met with a group of 20 members of Congress seeking a solution to avoid a government shutdown by passing the next spending bill by January 19. Ditching the shutdown is essential for Republicans to show their strength, while Democrats come under pressure from their base to pass a legislative fix to the impending end of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

Last year, Trump ended the DACA program, which shielded more than 700,000 illegal immigrants who arrived as children from deportation and gave them the right to work legally. Trump has given Congress until March to codify a permanent protection status.

Apart from DACA, lawmakers are also being asked to increase border security, address family-based “chain migration” and determine the future of the visa lottery program.

“You folks are going to have to come up with a solution, and if you do, I‘m going to sign that solution,” Trump told lawmakers.

Yet, Trump has insisted on building a border security wall, as promised during his election, campaign.

“If you don’t have the wall, you don’t have security,” he said.

Lawmakers from both parties are divided over the demand for a border wall on the southern US border. Democratic House Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland said his party was opposed to Republican calls for $ 18 billion in funding to build the barrier.

“It was clear in the meeting that wall did mean some structure,” Hoyer told reporters, adding that Trump’s remarks also mentioned fencing, cameras and other security measures for the border.

Republicans  were adamant that Trump’s call “means the wall,” but Trump acknowledges it does not need to cover the entire length of the border because of geographic boundaries.

Prior to the meeting, a leaked memo from the left-wing Center for American Progress called Dreamers “a critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success.”

The memo, co-authored by former Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri, instructed Democrats to “refuse to offer any votes for Republican spending bills that do not offer a fix for Dreamers and instead appropriate funds to deport them.”

The memo said protecting DACA is not only a “moral imperative” for Democrats, it is also key to getting votes.

“If Democrats don’t try to do everything in their power to defend Dreams, that will jeopardize Democrats’ electoral changes in 2018 and beyond,” stated the memo. “In short the next few weeks will tell us a lot about the Democratic party and its long-term electoral prospects.”

Democrats and Republicans are to resume negotiations on Wednesday, and will continue to meet over the next several weeks to avoid a government shutdown.

A slew of major companies—including tech giants Uber, Intel, Facebook, and Google—are forming a bloc to seek Congressional immigration reform.

According to Reuters, which first reported the news late Thursday evening, the companies will band together under the name “Coalition for the American Dream” and seek support to extend Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

This Obama-era executive action allowed “Dreamers,” undocumented immigrants who arrived as minors, to register with the government and legally study or work without fear of deportation. The newly organized Coalition appears to be unrelated to an Oklahoma-based group founded in 2006 that shares the same name: Coalition for the American Dream. (The Oklahoma group also “advocate[s] for and protect[s] the rights of disenfranchised immigrants and new Americans from all nations.”)

In September, President Trump announced that he would phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which offers protections to undocumented immigrants who came to the US at a young age. This week, Reuters reported that Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM and other large tech companies plan to lobby Congress to pass legislation that will continue to protect these so-called Dreamers. The total number of companies involved is around two dozen, though that could change before the coalition launches.

After the president announced his decision, tech company executives expressed their disappointment in numerous ways, including on Twitter and via email. Hundreds of CEOs signed an open letter from pro-immigration group FWD.us (co-founded by Mark Zuckerberg) urging the president to continue the program.

It’s likely that some action will happen on the DACA front as the holidays approach. In December, Congress will hopefully pass a spending bill (or face a US government shutdown). Reuters reports that Democrats may use this opportunity to pass legislation to protect Dreamers, trading their votes to avert a shutdown in exchange for promised protections.

  • Some of the biggest tech companies in tech are getting ready to lobby the US government to let “Dreamer” immigrants stay in the US.
  • Google, Microsoft, Uber, and IBM are among the nearly two dozen firms.
  • President Donald Trump has promised to tighten immigration into the US.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Nearly two dozen major U.S. companies in technology and other industries are planning to launch a coalition to demand legislation that would allow young, illegal immigrants a path to permanent residency, according to documents seen by Reuters.

The Coalition for the American Dream intends to ask Congress to pass bipartisan legislation this year that would allow these immigrants, often referred to as “Dreamers,” to continue working in the United States, the documents said.

Alphabet Inc’s Google, Microsoft Corp, Facebook Inc, Uber Technologies Inc, IBM Corp, Marriott International Inc and other top U.S. companies are listed as members, one of the documents shows.

Uber confirmed its membership, but the other companies did not immediately comment. It is possible that plans to launch the group could change.

“Uber joined the Coalition for the American Dream because we stand with the Dreamers,” Uber spokesman Matthew Wing said in a statement. “We’ve also held town halls, provided legal support and launched an online Dreamer Resource Center for any of our drivers… We plan to support Dreamers as long they need help.”

Mark ZuckerbergGettyFacebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg co-founded in 2013 a pro-immigration reform group called FWD.us. Following Trump’s decision, that group spearheaded sending a letter to Congress signed by 800 companies calling for legislation to protect Dreamers. Many of the companies that endorsed that letter are named as joining the new coalition.

“Dreamers are part of our society, defend our country, and support our economy,” said one of coalition documents, which is being shared by the group to recruit additional companies.

The push for this legislation comes after President Donald Trump’s September decision to allow the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to expire in March. That program, established by former President Barack Obama in 2012, allows approximately 900,000 illegal immigrants to obtain work permits.

Trump campaigned for president on a pledge to toughen immigration policies and build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

“No politician wants to go home for the holidays and read stories about how this is going to be DACA recipients’ last holidays in the U.S.,” said Todd Schulte, president of FWD.us, in an interview on Thursday. “You will see this continue to escalate until the end of the year.”

Immigration activists interrupted a press event in San Francisco, California and shouted down House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and two other Congressional Democrats from the state.

Representatives Barbara Lee and Jared Huffman joined Pelosi on Monday at College Track San Francisco to promote the revived DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act, aimed at almost 700,000 immigrants brought into the US illegally as children.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration announced it would scrap the executive decision protecting these immigrants from deportation, known as DACA, and give Congress a six-month deadline to come up with a law.

About a hundred “Dreamers” crashed the event and talked over the Democratic lawmakers, according to San Francisco Chronicle reporter Evan Sernoffsky.

“You’re a liar!” and “You met with Trump and you call that resistance?” they shouted at Pelosi, according to KTVU-TV. Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) dined with Trump last week to discuss the DREAM Act.

Another chant was “All of us or none of us,” Sernoffsky reported. This may be a reference to the millions of other immigrants in the US illegally that would not be eligible for amnesty under the DREAM Act.

On Saturday, California’s state legislature passed the California Values Act, or Senate Bill 54, a measure proposed by Democrats that would make the entire state a “sanctuary” for immigrants in the US illegally.

However, some of the bill’s original provisions were amended to allow police to share information with immigration authorities in cases involving people convicted of certain crimes, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced they have reached a deal with President Donald Trump that would protect certain unauthorized immigrants as part of a broader border security agreement.

The two Democratic leaders made the announcement Wednesday night after a meeting with Trump. They said their agreement would not include funding for a wall along the US-Mexico border, something on which Trump campaigned fervently.

“We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President. The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides,” their statement read.

“We also urged the President to make permanent the cost-sharing reduction payments, and those discussions will continue,” it said.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted that “excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to.”

DACA is the Obama-era program that protects some 800,000 people living in the US illegally from being deported and allows them to work legally. Many in the program were brought to the US as young children. Attorney General Jeff Sessions had announced last week that the program would be phased out within six months, giving Congress time to act on the issue.

A White House official said the trio also discussed tax reform, infrastructure, and trade issues. A separate statement from the White House called the deal “a positive step toward the President’s strong committment to bipartisan solutions for the issues most important to all Americans.”

Wednesday night’s meeting followed another deal Trump reached with Schumer and Pelosi last week, in which he agreed to a hurricane-relief package and an extension of the debt ceiling and continuing resolution to keep the government funded through December 15. Trump signed the legislation days later.
