“Blood Relatives” is a movie with a lot of heart. And blood. Lots and lots of blood, because this is the story of a pair of vampires. But it’s also a father-daughter bonding flick; a road trip movie; and a surprisingly non-stop delivery system for Yiddish words. Written, directed by, and starring Noah Segan, “Blood Relatives” is clearly a passion project for the actor (who you probably primarily know from his frequent collaborations with Rian Johnson), and as is often the case with passion projects for actors-turned-filmmakers, it’s a little clumsy. There are scenes that feel awkwardly long, in dire need of some trimming — a mid-movie sequence shot day-for-night goes on seemingly forever and robs the movie of serious momentum, for instance.
And yet, “Blood Relatives” is so unapologetically warm — especially for a vampire flick — that it’s hard not to be charmed by it all. You’ll notice the clunky bits that need some fixing. But you’ll also likely be taken with the undead drama of it all. Segan is Francis, a guy who looks young but is actually old. Very old. He’s a vampire who lived through World War II, and he’s not originally from America, as he’s prone to throwing out Yiddish words whenever he can (this is a running bit that sometimes works and garners big laughs, and sometimes falls flat; so it goes).
Francis lives a nomadic lifestyle, driving through the countryside in his 1969 Barracuda Fastback and wearing an outfit that, as one character aptly points out, is akin to someone dressing like the Fonz for Halloween. When the sun comes up, Francis either checks into motels or covers his car in a tarp to hide from the sun. It’s not clear if he enjoys this lifestyle, but it’s all he has, and it’s seemingly all he’s known for decades. And then everything changes when teenager Jane (Akasha Villalobos) tracks him down and tells him she’s his daughter.

Part of the fun of “Blood Relatives” is how Segan plays around with established vampire mythology. Yes, vampires are undead; yes, they drink blood (of humans and sometimes animals, but animals don’t taste as good); and yes, they can be killed by sunlight. But Francis also loves to chug bottles of booze — something Count Dracula, with his aversion to spirits, would gag at. And, even though he’s technically dead, Francis can also sire a child. Years ago he rolled into a town and got a one-night stand pregnant. Now, that woman is dead, and Jane, her daughter, has arrived to reveal to Francis she’s his long-lost child. And because her dad is a vampire, she’s a half-vampire herself. She has a thirst for blood, has superhuman strength, and can sprout fangs. But she’s also technically alive, ages naturally, and can move about during the day without bursting into flames.
Because Jane has no one, she wants to stay with Francis. Francis, as you’d imagine, thinks this is a terrible idea. But father and daughter reluctantly hit the road together, and it’s not going to be an easy journey. Jane is consistently angry in that sulky teen sort of way, and that’s part of the film’s problems. While Villalobos sells the angst of the character, she’s stuck with the type of smarmy, sardonic, rat-a-tat dialogue that never, ever sounds right coming out of the mouth of a kid. Kids don’t talk like this — screenwriters do. And as such, I had trouble getting used to Jane as a character. You could argue that her nature is all an act; she’s a hurt, lonely kid and she’s lashing out and trying to sound wiser beyond her years. But I don’t quite buy that, and I don’t buy her dialogue.
But I did buy the conflicts that arise between father and daughter, two characters who are both very alike and very different. And I bought into the way these two lonely people ultimately realize they need each other, because each other is all they’ve got. There’s something charming about the way Francis learns to change in order to raise his daughter. Even though he’s already an old man, he’s finally being forced to grow up, something that doesn’t come easy to anyone — even vampires. However, there are darker, somewhat unspoken things lurking in the background — the idea that eventually, Jane will get older and older while Francis stays the same. That’s bleak and disturbing — I was reminded of “Let the Right One In,” which had similar tragic vampire/human dynamics — but “Blood Relatives” plays them for laughs. But perhaps that’s just the reality of the situation — we find humor in the macabre all the time. We have to laugh, or else we’ll cry. “Blood Relatives” gets that, and that’s part of what makes the film so affable, even if it does trip over its own Dracula cape from time to time.

The CW is prepping for a potential profusion of girl power.
The network has greenlit three pilots centered on young women, TVLine has learned, including a live-action project based on The Powerpuff Girls cartoon series.
The Powerpuff Girls will follow characters introduced in Craig McCracken’s Cartoon Network series, who are now “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting,” the official logline reads. “Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”
Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars, Sleepy Hollow) and Diablo Cody (Juno, The United States of Tara) will write and executive-produce the potential series. Überproducer Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter (Black Lightning) and David Madden (Runaway Bride) also will serve as executive producers.
The CW also ordered Naomi, a series adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis/David F. Walker/Jamal Campbell’s DC comic of the same name. Per the logline: “Naomi follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.”
Naomi hails from Ava DuVernay (Queen Sugar, When They See Us) and Jill Blakenship (Arrow), both of whom will write and executive-produce. Other EPs include Sarah Bremner (Bright, The White Tiger) and Paul Garnes (Queen Sugar, Underground).
The third project greenlit is an as-yet-untitled dramedy about two millennial nuns: one who’s devout and a true believer, and the other who hasn’t yet taken her final vows. They “start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spirtual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic Church,” the logline reads. The project, from Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir, names Jennie Snyder Urman (Jane the Virgin) among its executive producers.
In addition, The CW on Tuesday issued a straight-to-series order to a reboot of The 4400. Earlier this month, The CW renewed 12 series for the 2021-22 TV season, including The Flash, Riverdale, Dynasty and the recent Walker reboot launch.

Fox’s ballet-themed comedy-drama pilot The Big Leap is taking the somewhat unusual step of recasting multiple roles at the 11th hour. And, yes, COVID is to blame.
According to Deadline, Covert Affairs vet Piper Perabo is replacing Laura Benanti (Supergirl, Nashville), while Kevin Daniels (Council of Dads) will be stepping in for Little Britain alum Matt Lucas. Both Benanti and Lucas exited tBig Leap due to scheduling conflicts brought on by the project’s pandemic-related production delay. Additionally, Galavant‘s Mallory Jansen is also joining the cast in a lead role.
The trio join an ensemble that also includes Scott Foley, Teri Polo, Ser’Darius Blain, Ray Cham, Jon Rudnitsky and Simone Recasner.
Inspired by a U.K. format, The Big Leap — which hails from Passage EP Liz Heldens — centers on a group of diverse underdogs from all different walks of life who attempt to be part of a competition reality series that is putting on a modern, hip remake of Swan Lake titled, you guessed it, The Big Leap. “What they lack in the traditional dancer body type,” the logline reads, “they make up for with their edge, wit and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.”
Perabo — most recently seen in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful sequel series City of Angels — will take over the role of Paula Dirks, a dancer and white-collar former V.P. at one of the major car companies who decides that The Big Leap is a chance to let go of her fears and explore her artistic side. Daniels will portray Wayne Sleep, a gay co-host of The Big Leap. Jansen, meanwhile, will play Monica Sullivan, an acid tongued ex-ballerina who has come on to co-host and choreograph The Big Leap.

Sarah Shahi‘s Sex/Life will soon be streaming on Netflix.
The TV vet (Person of Interest, Reverie) has landed the starring role in the “steamy, female-focused” dramedy from UnREAL EP Stacy Rukeyser.
Based on B.B. Easton’s 44 Chapters About 4 Men, Sex/Life — which has received an eight-episode order at Netflix — finds Shahi playing Billie Connelly, a suburban mother of two who goes in search of the sexy, single city girl she used to be a decade earlier. She takes a fantasy-charged trip down memory lane that sets her very married present on a collision course with her wild-child past.
Shahi recently held down recurring roles on Showtime’s City on a Hill and ABC’s The Rookie. She also starred in an episode of of Netflix’s Dolly Parton-themed anthology Heartstrings. Additional credits include Chicago Fire, The L Word and Alias.

Who says network shows are too safe these days? In a sea of bland sitcom revivals and by-the-book procedurals, NBC is taking a huge swing with Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist — debuting Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first three episodes — starring Jane Levy as a woman who starts hearing strangers’ innermost thoughts as elaborate musical numbers. I am pretty much the ideal audience for quirky oddballs like this, so I don’t want to discourage networks from taking chances — but Zoey is also muddled and overly maudlin, with a nagging tone problem it never quite solves. It’s kind of like listening to three bands play three different songs loudly all at once: While you appreciate the effort, you kind of wish they would just get on the same page.
Levy, the Suburgatory veteran who’s fresh off stints on What/If and Castle Rock, stars here as Zoey, a mousy coder who’s working up the courage to ask for a promotion at the sleek tech company she works for. (“I’m not really comfortable with anything,” she confesses to her boss. “That’s why I became a coder.”) Her dad Mitch (Peter Gallagher) suffers from a rare neurological disorder that leaves him unable to speak, so Zoey gets an MRI to make sure she’s healthy, and as music is being piped in, an earthquake strikes — and suddenly, Zoey finds that people are singing all around her, revealing their hidden thoughts and fears, and only she can hear them.
The logistics of Zoey’s newfound musical telepathy are more than a little fuzzy — why does she only hear some people’s thoughts, and not everyone around her? — so it’s probably best not to think about it too much. The point is, Zoey is now seeing the people in her life act out huge song-and-dance numbers to hits like the Beatles’ “Help” and Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and it’s refreshing to see a dash of surreal whimsy on a network show for once. (Zoey also has a bold and colorful visual palette that helps it stand out among today’s typically dark and drab dramas.) But in practice, the musical numbers tend to be overly long and indulgent, and end up feeling more like a gimmick than a well-earned plot device. Without the songs, would this show be worth watching? And is it even worth watching with the songs?
At first blush, Zoey seems like it might be a kindred spirit to The CW’s late, great musical rom-com Crazy Ex-Girlfriend — that show’s Skylar Astin even co-stars here as Zoey’s work buddy Max — but it’s actually closer to ABC’s short-lived Kevin (Probably) Saves the World: another goofy, spiritual-ish dramedy with an unlikely person thrust into helping complete strangers. Zoey, though, is tonally awkward from the start, shifting abruptly from frothy musical comedy to tear-jerking talk of terminal illness and suicide. Zoey’s struggles to cope with her dad’s condition are heartfelt, but never really take on the gravity they’re intended to — especially when someone’s crooning a Jonas Brothers song in the next scene. On Crazy Ex, the songs always felt vital to their singers’ personalities and rooted in the plot, but here, they often come off like glorified karaoke.
I do appreciate that Zoey has attracted a cast brimming with talent — which makes sense, since it offers its actors the rare opportunity to sing and dance on TV. Gallagher and Mary Steenburgen make a great pair as Zoey’s parents, and Glee alum Alex Newell is lots of fun as next-door neighbor Mo… although the show unfortunately pigeonholes Mo as the stereotypical “magical black friend” who somehow has all kinds of free time to help Zoey with her problems. (I’d rather watch Mo’s Extraordinary Playlist, frankly.) Plus, it’s always great to see Lauren Graham back on our TVs, but she’s an odd fit as Zoey’s hard-charging, domineering boss. (We do get to see her sing the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” though, so that’s a big bonus.) Really, it looks like all of the actors are having a blast filming Zoey‘s big musical numbers… but that fun never fully translates to us at home.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is a bold swing from NBC, but it’s too tonally jumbled and maudlin to strike the right chord.

Lena Headey is no longer queen, but she continues to slay: Headey will headline a new Showtime dramedy pilot, TVLine has learned.
The Game of Thrones star will play the titular character in Rita, which she also will executive-produce. The series is based on a Danish format about “a headstrong, unconventional teacher and single mother who takes on every kind of authority — as well as her family — in a messy and unfiltered way,” per the official logline.
“Rita is a deliciously subversive character who will make you laugh and cry as she continuously challenges the hypocrisy around her,” Jana Winograde, one of Showtime’s two presidents of entertainment, said via statement. “It goes without saying that Lena Headey is a force whose essence is ideal to take on this wonderfully dynamic lead role.”
Headey is best known for her eight-season run as ruthless queen Cersei Lannister on HBO’s Thrones. In addition, her small-screen resume includes The Sarah Connor Chronicles and lending her voice to series including Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, Danger Mouse and Uncle Grandpa. She also will voice Maudra Fara in Netflix’s forthcoming The Dark Crystal prequel Age of Resistance.
Rita creator Christian Torpe, who will base the pilot script on the original version of the series, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Platform One Media will produce.

Apple is singing a new tune, with a key assist from Sara Bareilles. The tech giant has given a straight-to-series, 10-episode order to the half-hour dramedy Little Voice, featuring original music by the Jesus Christ Superstar Live headliner.
Christina Ochoa has A Million Little Things on her plate now.
The star of The CW military drama Valor has joined the cast of ABC’s A Million Little Things dramedy pilot, our sister site Deadline reports.
The Big Chill-esque potential series follows a group of friends who’ve hit a rut in their lives. When one of them dies unexpectedly, it’s the wake-up call the others need to finally start living.
Ochoa’s character, Ashley, is the assistant of the friend who dies and “literally holds the key” to figuring the mystery surrounding his death. The pilot also stars David Giuntoli (Grimm) and Romany Malco (Weeds).
A Million Little Pieces is in second position to Ochoa’s current gig, which means that her role on Valor would take precedence if the CW series — which is tied with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Dynasty for the network’s lowest-rated show — were renewed.
In addition to playing Valor‘s Chief Warrant Officer 3 Nora Madani, Ochoa’s TV credits include Blood Drive, Animal Kingdom and Modern Family.

Facebook will soon be home to a half-hour dramedy series starring Elizabeth Olsen, Deadline reports. The show is currently untitled, but was formerly known as Widow, and is thought to be about a young widow who’s reconnecting with people from her past while she deals with the loss of her husband. It was created by Kit Steinkellner (Z: The Beginning of Everything) and Switched at Birth creator Lizzy Weiss will serve as showrunner.
Facebook Watch has quite a bit of sports content, both games and reality shows with pro athletes, but Facebook said last year that it was willing to spend $ 1 billion on original programming in 2018. So far, the company has announced a Kerry Washington-produced drama called Five Points and a show called Sacred Lies produced by two of the people behind True Blood. Olsen is another substantial get for Facebook, which is looking to compete with other platforms like Netflix and Hulu. “I couldn’t be prouder of the group we have brought together for this show,” Olsen told Deadline. “Kit’s story has been near and dear to me for years and I can’t wait to share our dark, funny, and complicated show with the world.”
Facebook has ordered 10 episodes of the series though there’s no word yet on when it might air.

Scott Foley is one step closer to staying in the ABC fold after Scandal wraps it run.
The network has given an official pilot order to Whiskey Cavalier, an action dramedy starring Foley as a tough but tender FBI agent.
The hourlong series follows Foley’s Will Chase — code name: Whiskey Cavalier — as he partners up with a badass CIA operative — code name: Fiery Tribune — to lead a team of spies that “saves the world, one mission at a time.”
Dave Hemingson (How I Met Your Mother) will pen the pilot and serve as an EP alongside Bill Lawrence (Cougar Town, Scrubs); Foley will also serve as a producer.
Foley is currently playing Jake Ballard on ABC’s Scandal, which wraps its run on April 19. He first broke out as computer nerd Noel Crane on The WB’s Felicity and went on to log appearances on Grey’s Anatomy and True Blood.
Foley and Lawrence have a history together, too: Foley played Elliot’s boyfriend Sean Kelly on Scrubs, and later appeared on Lawrence’s shows Cougar Town and Undateable.
