Stomach bloating has affected most people at some point in their lifetime, and it usually occurs after eating too much food, according to the NHS.

Feeling bloated makes the tummy feel stretched, puffy, and generally uncomfortable.

Stomach bloating is a sign of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is a digestive condition that may be caused by oversensitive gut nerves.

But making some simple dietary changes – including cutting out gluten and wheat – could help to prevent the painful condition, a patient has claimed.

Jenny Mitchell, 56, reduced her signs of IBS by cutting out certain foods from her diet.

Her symptoms began 20 years ago, and they made her feel like someone had a tight grip around her stomach, squeezing it hard, she said.

“I’d be really nervous about going out with friends or family because I’d always be thinking ‘where can I go to the toilet if I needed to quickly?’,” said Mitchell.

“I’d go out for a meal feeling bloated, constipated and very uncomfortable knowing that I would be eating more which would leave me feeling even worse.”

Mitchell “went back to basics” after carrying out a food intolerance test. She cut out all gluten, wheat, barley, chillies, tomatoes, vinegar, and anything fermented, she said.

She also kept a food diary to write down exactly what she’d eaten and how she felt.

“It was really hard for me because I loved my cakes and biscuits,” she added. “But I’d had enough of feeling so unwell and I was determined to give it a try.

“Initially my symptoms got slightly worse – I suffered with headaches and my skin came out in horrible boils.

“I think my body was going through a withdrawal process as it gradually got rid of all the toxins.

“I then switched to a vegan, plant-based diet which meant no meat, fish or dairy. Gradually my symptoms improved and my energy returned. It meant a huge change in my lifestyle but I was determined.”

IBS patients should avoid delaying or skipping meals, as it may cause signs of stomach bloating, added the NHS.

Fatty, spicy or processed foods could also increase the risk of IBS symptoms, it said.

Some foods are harder to break down and digest, including carnage, cauliflower, beans and dried fruit.

Instead, try eating up to a tablespoon of linseeds everyday, it added.

Saline lakes, like the Caspian Sea, the Dead Sea, the Salton Sea, and of course the Great Salt Lake, have served as recreational playgrounds and tourist attractions, supported thriving fishing and shipping industries, and yielded minerals to be extracted for commercial and industrial applications. A slightly less quantifiable benefit they used to grant was providing habitats for waterbirds.

But these lakes are getting smaller and smaller—and becoming saltier and saltier—as we siphon off ever more of their water, predominantly for agricultural purposes. A perspective piece published in Nature Geoscience this week entitled “Decline of the world’s saline lakes” bemoans that “the ecosystem services provided by saline lakes are real, but less easily quantified [than the benefits of water consumption], and may have a constituency that is less well established in law, business, and social practice.”

The economic benefits of taking water from these lakes for agriculture is apparent, whereas the costs of doing so are not as obvious. But the costs are there. The lakes’ decreasing surface may render their shores inaccessible for mineral extraction. Their increasing salinity may cause the collapse of recreation, tourism, fisheries, and ecosystems, as the species that used to thrive in them can’t tolerate all that salt.

The White House announced Friday they will keep their visitor logs private, citing “grave national security risks and privacy concerns of the hundreds of thousands of visitors annually,” according to a statement released by communications director Michael Dubke.

Dubke added that the logs would be disclosed “as outlined under the Freedom of Information Act.” However, a 2013 court ruling determined the president is not legally obligated to disclose White House visitor records under the Freedom of Information Act.

Watchdog groups criticized the latest decision from the Trump administration, saying that visitor logs help the American people know who is influencing the president.

“The only excuse for this policy is that the Trump administration has something to hide,” David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice, a nonprofit political advocacy group, said in a Friday press release. “This kind of secrecy will allow big donors, lobbyists and special interests to have unknown levels of influence in the White House.“

“It’s the exact opposite of ‘draining the swamp,” Donnelly added.

Tom Fitton, president of the conservative Judicial Watch, said he was “disappointed” in the Trump administration’s decision. He added that the policy “undermines the rule of law and suggests this White House doesn’t want to be accountable to the American people,” according to a statement released Friday. 

“It’s disappointing that the man who promised to ‘drain the swamp’ just took a massive step away from transparency,” Noah Bookbinder, Executive Director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a legal watchdog group, said in a statement. 

This past Monday, CREW filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for failing to respond to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to disclose records from the White House and Trump’s residences in Florida and New York. 

Democrats in Congress have also introduced legislation that would require the Trump administration to disclose their visitor logs from the White House, Trump Tower, the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey and the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, which Trump has dubbed the “southern White House.”

The Obama administration claimed the policy was created to ensure Americans could “know whose voices are being heard in the policymaking process.” 

Under Obama, visitor logs were released every 90-120 days. By the end of his presidency, Obama had released the names of nearly 6 million visitors, according to White House records. 

The White House did not include personal guests who did not have any official political business, such as family and friends, or guests who had particularly sensitive meetings with the president, such as potential Supreme Court nominees.

However, the Obama administration did include records on how many names were withheld, and later released their names once the information was no longer considered sensitive.

The Obama-era visitor logs did not contain personal information that could threaten the visitor’s safety or national security, such as, dates of birth, social security numbers, and contact phone numbers, etc.

While Obama was in office, Trump repeatedly criticized him on Twitter for not releasing various personal records like his birth certificate. Trump accused Obama of “spending millions to try and hide his records” and questioned if he was “Hiding something?”
