This has already felt like the longest season in RuPaul’s Drag Race herstory, and Friday’s episode did nothing to change that.

Fresh off the elimination of Olivia Lux, the four remaining queens — Gottmik, Kandy Muse, Rosé and Symone — assembled in the werkroom to brace for their final challenge, immediately theorizing about the surprises still remaining up Ru’s sleeve.

“It could be that one of us goes home, it could be that two of us go home, it could be that none of us go home — we don’t know!” Symone said, though I think we all knew it was going end up being option No. 3. Seriously, did anyone think that only three queens would make it to the finale?

For their final challenge, the queens were tasked with writing, recording and performing their own verse to Mama Ru’s “Lucky,” complete with choreography by Jamal Sims. The end result was a fun, colorful music video that really featured all four girls in their best light. Gottmik delivered a spoken verse that remained inspiring without getting too cheesy, Kandy looked back on her journey “from the hood to Hollywood,” Symone served more attitude than anyone else, and Rosé… can rap? Is that what that was? Honestly, everybody slayed this in their own way, but if I had to pick a winner, it’d be another Symone/Rosé split.

The queens also appeared as guests on RuPaul and Michelle Visage’s new Inside Drag Race segment. (Don’t worry, there were still plenty of Tic-Tacs to not go around.) Rosé insisted that Jan will be more supportive than jealous of her success on the show, Kandy defended herself against haters who feel she hasn’t earned her spot in the Top 4, Gottmik admitted that her drag name may or may not have a porn star connection, and Symone looked back on her own journey of self-acceptance.

There was also some emotional kiki-ing as the queens prepared to hit the main stage one last time. Gottmik said this whole experience has taught her not to feel pressured as a representative of the trans male community. “I’ve learned that the best way to represent your community is just by being you,” she said. “The pressure’s just unnecessary.”

That revelation resonated with Symone, who explained, “I’ve had to unpack a lot of things about myself. I was a very lonely and very shy kid. I didn’t love myself. To come to this competition and to blossom into the Symone that everyone sees… I finally see it. And let me tell you, when you finally get on the other side, it is a beautiful feeling. Nobody can take that from me. I love me, and I can say that. I can say that now.” (BRB, sobbing.)

Now, for the runway: “Drag Excellence!” Mik gott things started in a form-fitting, Cruella de Vil-approved spotted dress; Kandy followed with a “fun, sexy, flirty” little number; Rosé paid tribute to her Scottish heritage in a gown made entirely of tartan; and Symone closed the show in a stunning purple gown with enormous sleeves that screamed “royalty!” in surround sound. The judges, of course, didn’t have a single negative thing to say about any of the queens’ looks. (I thought Symone’s was great, Rosé’s was good, Gottmik’s was fun and Kandy’s was a choice.)

Then came the final gag of the evening: Not only did all four queens have to lip sync for their lives, but they had to do it individually. Thus began a montage of four separate performances to Whitney Houston’s “I Learned From the Best” (HQ2 Radio Remix) — a song I have absolutely, 100-percent heard before. Like the girls’ performances in the music video, what is there to even critique about this? They all went the dramatic route, they were all fully committed, and I wasn’t the least bit surprised when Ru announced that they would all be staying for the finale.

Drag Race Top 4 Revealed! Which Queen Wasn’t Quite ‘Strong Enough’? https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-top-4-revealed-which-queen-wasnt-quite-strong-enough/ https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-top-4-revealed-which-queen-wasnt-quite-strong-enough/#respond Sat, 03 Apr 2021 06:23:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-top-4-revealed-which-queen-wasnt-quite-strong-enough/

Meant for more, Top 4! Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race dethroned yet another hopeful queen, paving the way for a sickening season finale… in a few weeks.

Friday’s maxi challenge cast the five remaining contestants — Gottmik, Kandy Muse, Olivia Lux, Rosé and Symone — in the instant sci-fi classic Henny, I Shrunk the Drag Queens! And who better to prepare them for their close-up than Black Widow herself, Scarlett Johansson? Certainly not Colin Jost, who crashed his wife’s virtual pep talk to ask if the movie was called… Size Queens. (Save the comedy for Weekend Update, pal.)

Most of Henny‘s casting actually fell into place naturally — Rosé as Brandy, the “sarcastic” queen, Gottmik as Chardonnay, the “whiny” one, and Olivia as Ginger Ale, the “dumb” one — but there was a bit of friction when it came time for Kandy and Symone to claim their roles. Both had their heart set on Dominique, the “mean” one, and neither was about to back down.

Following an extremely frustrating back-and-forth exchange, Symone eventually accepted the role of Margarita, the “smart” one, but she wasn’t happy about it. This had me concerned, as [1] I only want the best for Symone, and [2] we’ve seen countless queens bomb acting challenges by basically throwing in the towel after not getting their preferred role. A tearful Symone even admitted (via confessional) that the pressure and expectations of the competition are really starting to get to her. (Seriously, it’s 2021. Why do smart TVs not come with a “send hug” feature?!)

In the end, though, Symone’s tears were for naught. The judges thoroughly enjoyed her performance, while they felt that Kandy relied too heavily on her same ol’ schtick and didn’t bring enough zazz to the part. They actually felt that Olivia, who also underperformed, might have benefitted from playing Dominique, as it would have given her a chance to expand her range. And it wasn’t just Kandy’s acting that got a bad review from the judges; they also tore apart her “sloppy,” ill-fitting runway look. Michelle Visage even gave her the dreaded “You’re better than that” line.

“I feel very disappointed,” Kandy said, her eyes welling up with tears. “And I agree about the outfit. When I put it on, I don’t feel beautiful in it. You know when you put something on and you feel great in it? I didn’t feel that. And I’m just disappointed. We’re so close to the end, and this is something I’ve wanted for so long. But the fight’s not over, and maybe next time I’ll play a dumb bitch.”

Check out this week’s full runway (“Haute Pockets”) below:

A few of these looks were great, but Gottmik gets my personal seal of approval — if only for that spot-on Hercules flasher reference. (Click here if you need a refresher.)

But before sending the queens to untuck backstage, Ru posed everybody’s favorite cringe question: “Who should go home tonight, and why?” Everyone chose Olivia without hesitation, except for Ms. Lux, who eventually settled on Kandy after what felt like a full hour of silence.

And the judges’ ruling couldn’t have been any less surprising. Rosé was handed her third win of the season (they loved her mod look on the runway), while Gottmik and Symone (phew!) sashayed to safety, leaving Kandy and Olivia to face the music — that music being Cher’s “Strong Enough.”

Real talk, though… Considering how much was on the line for both queens, not to mention the inherent potential of this iconic jam, I was a little underwhelmed by the lip sync. Kandy managed to pull a few laughs out of the judges, but there were no wow moments on either end. If the pool wasn’t already so small, I’d have sent them both packing. Then again, I’m not Ru. And my opinion is literally irrelevant.

Then came the final decision: Kandy was sent to safety, while Olivia Lux was told to sashay away. “You should be very proud of yourself.” Ru said. “I know I am.”

“A friendly reminder to Liv life to the fullest,” Olivia said on her way off the runway.

Do you agree with that outcome? How do you feel about this season’s Top 4? Weigh in via our poll below, then drop a comment with your thoughts.

A flat performance in a soda-themed challenge got another competitor canned on Friday’s Drag Race, leaving us with but a six-pack of queens.

Following an arousing — sorry, make that a rousing — game of Are You Smarter Than the Pit Crew?, which challenged the queens’ knowledge of Drag Race institutions like Lil’ Poundcake and the Interior Illusions Lounge, the group was presented with this week’s maxi challenge: to create and brand a soft drink, design the can, produce and star in a commercial, and write a catchy jingle. You know, totally normal things that all drag queens do in their day-to-day lives.

In a surprising turn of events, some of the night’s worst commercials came from some of the season’s supposed frontrunners. Let’s start with Tina Burner, whose “Viagra in a can” called Burnin’ Up (she will be hearing from the Jonas Brothers’ lawyers, by the way!) was a surprise flop, especially considering how consistently she’s performed until now. Watching her struggle to nail that line about Victoria’s Secret, I couldn’t help but flash back to Kahmora Hall’s iconic performance as a tree. (“I was ROOTING… for US!”)

Other missteps included Gottmik’s confusing sex juice commercial, which even she admitted made no sense; Utica Queen’s uncomfortable teat suckling, a tribute to her childhood cow Clara, the same one mentioned by that medium last week; and Olivia Lux’s overall directionless performance. Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews didn’t need to tell her to look confused — she took care of that herself.

Drag Race RecapThat said, sometimes the top performers are exactly the ones you expect, like Symone and Rosé, who ended up sharing this week’s win. Both took direction very well while filming their commercials, maintaining a natural humor throughout. Symone looking at the camera and asking “Is your blood sugar low?” was a moment in itself.

In fact, Symone probably could have been the sole winner of this week’s challenge, had it not been for Rosé’s devilishly stunning “Beast Couture” runway look (pictured here). Seriously, The CW should call her up to consult on HIM‘s makeup for the live-action Powerpuff Girls show. Symone’s foxy look was a hysterical stroke of brilliance, especially in its styling, but it just didn’t have the same wow factor as Rosé’s.

Check out the rest of this week’s runway — including Utica’s tribute to Maleficent, Kandy Muse’s lazy alien outfit, and Tina looking like a gay version of Barf from Space Balls — below:

Given the quality of her commercial and her tepid reception on the runway, Utica was a udder-ly destined for this week’s bottom two. But it was a bit of a surprise to see Tina lip syncing alongside her, especially when some queens (*cough* Kandy *cough*) appeared to have put in far less effort. Still, if ever there was a perfect battle to be rocking a giant dog suit, it was this one, set to Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps.” The sheer ridiculousness of Tina twerking in that oversized costume sent Ru into hysterics, while Utica was stuck doing a way-too-serious interpretation in her constricting gown.

So imagine the viewers’ collective shock when Ru announced Tina’s elimination!

RELATED STORIES

After two long weeks of peace in the queendom, another contestant was finally sent packing on Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which featured the long-awaited Snatch Game of Season 13.

Let’s start with the few good performances, some of which could potentially go down in the annals of herstory alongside the all-time greats:

* Gottmik as Paris Hilton was frighteningly spot-on, easily the best of the bunch. From the fake voice to the facial contouring to the Ibiza shoutout, it was just *chef’s kiss* perfection from start to finish. I wish the jokes had been a little stronger, but I’ll settle for pretty funny and disturbingly accurate.

* Symone as Harriet Tubman was definitely among the night’s riskier choices; even Symone admitted, “I understand how it could be offensive, but I don’t want to let that stop me from doing it.” And she didn’t let it stop her, turning out one of the more hysterical performances. In fact, I really thought it could be a winner… that is, until she got Jenifer Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence mixed up. That definitely knocked her down a peg.

* Denali as Jonathan Van Ness finally earned this forgotten queen some proper critiques from the judges, and they had nothing but good things to say about her overall performance. The energy, the hair flips, the collective vocabulary of a Lisa Frank sticker book… it was shockingly entertaining.

* Rosé as Mary Queen of Scots definitely looked the part. Was she funny? The judges seemed to think so! Honestly, I could barely understand a word she was saying, which is part of what Ru & Co. seemed to enjoy. Overall, I thought this was always in danger of veering into the “too intellectual” category, but Rosé managed to keep it on track. And it was all worth it for that Kandy Muse confessional moment: “Baby, I don’t know who the f–k Mary Queen of Scots is, but Rosé has this funny ass Ireland accent.” How many times can a person go wrong in one sentence?

Now for what I call the “blah” category, the inoffensive-but-uninspired performances that I didn’t hate… but also won’t remember for much longer:

* Tina Burner as Richard Simmons had a lot of potential, but I don’t think it ever quite made it out of the gate. The energy was definitely there, but the jokes simply were not.

* Kandy Muse as Patrick Starrr was fine. I’ll admit, I don’t know a whole lot about the make-up mogul. Does he normally eat bananas without taking the peel off? I did my due diligence and looked up a few of his videos, and I didn’t think Kandy really bothered trying to sound like him, either. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t terrible. It just… was.

Now for the truly awful performances, the ones for which apologies are owed:

* Olivia Lux as Tabitha Brown was really disappointing, especially considering how excited Olivia was to play her. Then again, I should have predicted it would go down in flames after Olivia spoke so highly of her work in the last improv challenge. You know, the one where she was literally a mime with no dialogue? She may have perfected Brown’s look, but a few jokes would have also been a plus.

* Utica Queen as Bob Ross was a damn nightmare from the moment we got a look at that wig made out of squirrels. (As Utica explained, she didn’t think it was appropriate to wear an afro in 2021… which even Ru found completely insane.) And did she really eat that green paint? I don’t care if it was non-toxic, it was weird as hell. And not in a good way. Her whole performance gave me major serial killer vibes.

* Elliott With 2 Ts as Rue McClanahan made me want to reach my hands into the TV and shake some sense (or at least a few jokes) into her. Why would you choose to play one of the Golden Girls — a show RuPaul had admittedly watched 25 times all the way through — unless you were confident you could absolutely nail Blanche Deveraux? [Pause to give Sophia time to make a joke.] The only good thing about Elliott’s flat performance was that it actually gave me more appreciation for how nuanced and complex McClanahan’s character really is.

I can’t fully argue that Gottmik shouldn’t have won this challenge; her Hilton impression was spot-on, and her runway look — complete with Swarovski blood dripping from the giant safety pin stuck through her head — was phenomenal.

Drag Race SymoneBut in what universe was Symone merely “safe”? Not only was she hysterical in the Snatch Game (save for that Lewis/Lawrence snafu), but her runway look was a moment. Dressed in all white, with gunshots in her back and “Say their names” printed on her fascinator, she used her platform to make a powerful statement. I’m glad Ru acknowledged that before sending Symone to safety, but I would have preferred that she remain on the stage like the top contender that she was. End rant.

This week’s bottoms, meanwhile, were no surprise. The judges may have enjoyed Utica and Elliott’s runway looks — which were inspired by picnics and flamingos, respectively — but they failed too hard at the Snatch Game to avoid a punishment. Utica knew she’d need to give this her all in order to stand a chance against proven-assassin Elliott… and that’s exactly what she did. The queens watching from the back of the stage seemed to be living for Utica’s every quirk and kick. Whereas Elliott took a slightly sexier approach to Company B’s “Fascinated,” Utica opted for a more comedic performance. And it paid off.

When the music finished, Elliott and every single last one of her Ts were sent packing. Would you have sent her home? And who delivered your favorite Snatch Game performance(s)? Weigh in via our poll below, then drop a comment with more of your thoughts.

Broadway may still be dark, but Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race kept the music going (for better or worse) with the debut of its latest Rusical.

The Rusical is a time-honored tradition, one that has previously explored everything from the rise of the Kardashians (R.I.P., Kimye!) to the fall of herstory’s baddest bitches. So, how did Social Media: The Unverified Rusical stack up against previous seasons’ productions? In the words of Dorinda Medley, “not well, bitch.” Seriously, not even a pre-show pep talk from Anne Hathaway could save this one.

Sure, several queens had stand-out moments — from Denali and Gottmik as a pair of Russian bots to Kandy Muse’s “Womanizer” homage — but to quote Nicole Kidman in The Prom, it lacked a certain… zazz. Unlike last season’s Madonna Rusical, I will not be accepting RuPaul’s support to “binge view” this one on YouTube anytime soon.

Like most challenges that require any element of casting, there was instant drama with this one. Specifically, Rosé and Denali (who are very different, yet also somehow interchangeable?) were gunning for the same role, leading to a sing-off so uncomfortable I cringe just thinking about it. “We have a lot of nerve making them audition,” Olivia Lux acknowledged. “But I want to see it!”

The final vote, unsurprisingly, came out largely in support of Rosé, though Utica Queen and Tina Burner both threw their support behind Denali… or did they? (“I 100-percent chose Denali to f–k with Rosé’s brain,” Tina admitted in a confessional.) Watch it all go down below:

Fortunately, this week’s [extreme Barbra Streisand voice] “Yellow, Gorgeous!” runway offered the queens a chance to remind us why we still love them. Tina and Elliott With 2 Ts both deserve toots for their respective taxi-inspired getups, Gottmik’s Crash Test Dummy tribute could stop traffic, Denali did Banana proud with her “princess python realness” look, and Symone was dressed to kill as a pimped-out Big Bird (her words!). Heck, I didn’t even hate Kandy’s recreation of Beyoncé’s iconic “Lemonade” video dress — and that’s progress!

But only one look elicited an actual audible gasp from me, and that was Rosé’s ridiculous (and well-executed!) tribute to Jim Carrey’s character in The Mask. The green face, the feminized outfit, the big smile — everything worked. Coupled with Rosé’s impressive performance in the Rusical, her victory this week was a foregone conclusion.

As for Michelle Visage’s assertion that Rosé’s outfit was orange, rather than the requested yellow, I’m not sold. I feel like she was just trying to start another black-and-blue vs. white-and-gold debacle, per the week’s theme of social media, and I for one am not biting. … OK, fine, I’ll bite. Cast your vote below:

–

Despite the judges enjoying their runway looks, Kandy and Symone landed in the bottom two for their lackluster Rusical performances, and rightfully so. But these queens weren’t about to tap out just yet, so from the moment Fifth Harmony’s “BO$ $ ” started playing, it was a fight to the death (drop). Even though I’m proudly #TeamSymone, I truly believe that Kandy won this lip sync — but that doesn’t matter, because neither of them is sashaying (Hath)away!

Real talk, though: We all knew this was going to be a double shantay from the jump, yes? I can’t quite put my finger on why — perhaps it’s because both of these queens seem utterly destined for the Top 4 — but after years of watching this show, you just know when it’s coming. Ru almost got me with that fake-out, but calling Kandy back was as inevitable as Rosé’s victory in a musical challenge. (Sorry, Jan!)

Sherry Pie, Disqualified Drag Race Contestant, Gives TV Interview About Predatory Catfishing Scheme https://briefnews.eu/sherry-pie-disqualified-drag-race-contestant-gives-tv-interview-about-predatory-catfishing-scheme/ https://briefnews.eu/sherry-pie-disqualified-drag-race-contestant-gives-tv-interview-about-predatory-catfishing-scheme/#respond Tue, 16 Feb 2021 15:58:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/sherry-pie-disqualified-drag-race-contestant-gives-tv-interview-about-predatory-catfishing-scheme/

For the first time since being disqualified from RuPaul’s Drag Race in March 2020, disgraced performer Sherry Pie (the stage name of Joey Gugliemelli) sat down for a live televised interview on Tuesday’s Tamron Hall Show.

Before we jump in, here’s some background: Gugliemelli competed in the 12th season of VH1’s popular reality competition series, but a series of sexual misconduct allegations were brought against him just hours before his first episode was set to air, prompting producers to edit him out of the season and disqualify him from the competition. Up to a dozen men have now come forward with claims that Gugliemelli — posing as a fake casting director named Allison Mossie — tricked them into sending money and degrading photographs under the guise of being considered for roles on stage and screen.

Hall began Tuesday’s episode by addressing the social media backlash she’s been receiving for planning this conversation. “The very idea that I’d have Sherry Pie on … was seen by some as giving away my platform,” Hall said to the camera. “I’ve been a reporter for 30 years. I’ve interviewed rapists, I’ve interviewed murderers, I remember interviewing a woman in prison who murdered a child she was trusted to care for. It’s not giving away your platform. It’s called an interview, and people who do bad things are interviewed. R. Kelly comes to mind. That’s just one person I’m thinking who was recently interviewed on multiple platforms and shared all over social media.”

After insisting that she doesn’t give “free passes,” Hall welcomed Gugliemelli into the studio remotely.

“I first want to say that there are no ‘allegations,’” Gugliemelli began. “I admit to my wrongdoings and horrible behavior. I don’t know if … more [victims] will come forward. I’m here to apologize, and I want to make that very clear. I understand now, in lieu of this year, how much pain I’ve caused. I just want to let the victims know, and everyone else know, that I am so sorry. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain and the trauma that I’ve caused. That’s really all I have to say.” (And, truly, he didn’t have much else to say.)

Gugliemelli explained that he’s been “doing cognitive behavioral therapy” ever since his disqualification and has been in contact with three of his victims. “Two of them I still speak to,” he said. “One of them asked me to no longer contact them, and I totally understand that.” Gugliemelli explained that some of his victims were very close friends, and that he “wanted to be able to keep them around and keep them close.”

As for potential criminal charges, Gugliemelli is “prepared to take any responsibility,” though he’s only been contacted by authorities for a welfare check thus far.

Towards the end of the end of the interview, Gugliemelli revealed that he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder around the time of his disqualification, adding, “I don’t blame my mental illness for anything I’ve done.” He also made vague allusions to his childhood, which included a “deplorable” father and a stepfather with whom he still has a bad relationship.

Official video of the less-than-illuminating interview will be added when it becomes available. In the meantime, drop a comment with your thoughts on Hall and Gugliemelli’s interview below.

Reboots and Ru-vivals may be all the rage, but they rarely match the quality of the original. Enter this week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Three seasons after The Bossy Rossy Show wowed audiences with its terrifying pickles and sexy drag babies, Ross Mathews’ iconique late-night talker was brought back for another round on Friday — and it was all over the place. (Sure, there were a few highlights, but it’s not a great night of performances when someone receives the highest honors for playing a mime. Even if she did emote for the gods.)

This came after a thoroughly satisfying reading mini challenge, which Gottmik won with a series of savage reads about Kandy Muse identifying with the pug community, Tina Burner having a football player’s build, and Utica Queen just being “f–ing weird.” That last one was actually a recurring read throughout the mini game; Tina straight-up asked Utica where she’s hiding the bodies of her victims. Watch the full reading challenge below:

The real gag this week turned out to be Olivia Lux, whose cover as a low-key fierce competitor has officially been blown. Tina even clocked her as a “secret diva,” and she’s not wrong. Not only was Utica furious when Olivia “stole” her part in the improv challenge, but Olivia even threw a little salt into her wound, suggesting, “I might end up in the top again.” And you know what? She did end up in the top. This marks the second maxi challenge win for Olivia, who has yet to end up anywhere close to the bottom. And the more I think about her clever take on the runway theme (pictured above), the more I appreciate her ingenuity.

With all due respect to Miss Lux, however, I think I would have declared Symone this week’s winner. Not only did she bring enough energy to keep her entire improv sketch alive, but I don’t even have words for how good her runway look was. I just sat there slack-jawed, attempting to absorb every inch of this African warrior-inspired masterpiece…

I also have to tip my hat to Gottmik for her brilliant anal bead-inspired look. See that latex number in all its glory, plus each of the other queens’ “Bead It!” runway ensembles, in the video below:

On the other end of the spectrum, a combination of unimpressive improv performances and lackluster runway presentations landed LaLa Ri and Elliott With 2 Ts in the bottom two this week, with Utica narrowly avoiding having to lip sync for her life.

Despite LaLa’s track record for killing lip syncs, Elliott entered their battle with confidence. And from the moment Kelly Clarkson’s “Whole Lotta Woman” started playing, she turned it out. LaLa may have charisma, uniqueness and talent, but Elliott brought the nerve, remaining at or above LaLa’s level the entire time, throwing in the occasional split to sweeten the pot. And those synchronized body rolls! Real talk, neither of these ladies disappointed. In the end, however, the “LaLa Ri Experience” simply wasn’t enough — Ru was forced to send the queen sashaying back to Atlanta.

Do you think this was the right call? (Part of me expected a double shantay, if I’m being honest.) Vote in our poll below, then drop a comment with your thoughts on the episode.

Like Gumby strapped to one of those Midieval torture racks, it seems there is no limit to how long RuPaul’s Drag Race is capable of stretching out the first elimination of Season 13.

For the third consecutive week, Friday’s episode ended without a single queen going home, as the “losers” from the premiere returned to the werkroom for another chance to prove their worth before the almighty judges’ panel.

Let’s start by focusing on the good: the reveal of this week’s top two queens — Rosé and Denali — came as no surprise to anyone. Rosé made a big impression on the judges with her Moschino- and McQueen-inspired looks in the “Lady and the Vamp” mini challenge, while Denali also turned heads in an ensemble reminiscent of a slinky mistress emerging from the flames of an unruly candelabra that was knocked over by someone’s drunk uncle. (Yes, extremely specific narrative!) And when it came time for the group number, both queens owned their respective moment in the spotlight; Rosé took a page from her bandmate Jan, ending her “Phenomenon” verse on a big-ass note, while Denali served up some of my favorite lyrics of the night. (“Triple lutz on these sluts.” Are you kidding me?!)

For their lip sync battle, set to the tune of Britney Spears’ timeless bop “If U Seek Amy,” Rosé took a slightly more comedic approach, while Denali chose to fully live the pop star fantasy. (Bonus points for their synchronized split!) Either one of these girls would have been an acceptable winner in my eyes, but the $ 5,000 tip ultimately went to ice queen Denali.

My other favorite lyrics of the night came courtesy of Joey Jay, who introduced herself in the number with a simple “I’m a gay-ass bitch! I’m Joey Jay!” (Look, sometimes the best message is also the simplest, OK?) And can we talk about how Tamisha Iman is 49, with biological children older than some of her competitors this season? She must bathe in the literal Fountain of Youth™ on a daily basis. There’s simply no other explanation.

Props must also be awarded to Utica Queen, someone I completely underestimated. From her McDonald’s ball pit-inspired look in the mini challenge to her “Sleeve-y Nicks” getup on the main stage, Utica is definitely a weird one to watch. (The judges were right to compare her to Thorgy Thor, though the Yvie Oddly comparison felt like a bit of a stretch.) Adding to her mystique, the Minnesota-based queen also revealed herself to be… a Seventh-day Adventist? (“No pressure, but Jesus is great!”)

One queen who did herself absolutely no favors this week was Kahmora Hall. Her looks may have been polished — she credited Kate Middleton, Cher and Spears for influencing several of her ensembles — but she spent so much time getting ready that the producers almost began the mini challenge without her. And if time was an issue with only five other queens in the werkroom, just imagine how she’ll fare when the two groups merge next week!

OK, time to discuss: Which of the “losers” impressed you the most this week? How amazing was returning guest judge Nicole Byer? And which queen do you predict will become Season 13’s official Pork Chop? Drop a comment with all of your thoughts below.

The handbags may have been tiny on Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, but the twists were big. And they were plentiful.

Following last week’s game-changing Season 13 premiere, TVLine readers were gunning for either Kahmora Hall, Elliott With 2 Ts or Utica Queen to become the official Pork Chop of Season 13. And the show was more than happy to grant their wish… with one major catch.

Friday’s episode kicked off with the seven queens who lost their lip sync battles — Kahmora, Elliott, Utica, Joey Jay, Rosé, Tanisha Iman and Denali — voting to send one girl home in order to save themselves. Joey summed up the situation perfectly: “This is f–ed!”

While most of the queens expressed displeasure with this curveball (“We can’t vote! We don’t even know each other yet!”), Rosé had a slightly more sensible reaction, acknowledging that the decision would have to be made based on their first impressions of one another. Joey and Utica tied with the most votes, forcing Ru to instate a “tie-breaker voting round,” which each queen only voting for either Joey or Utica.

“I’m just dreading the worst,” Utica confessed, though her fears turned out to be unwarranted, as Elliott was ultimately the one sent packing. “It’s been a lovely 15 minutes with all of you,” Elliott told the group on her way out. “I got sent home for something I didn’t have any say in. That sucks. I’m 100-percent heartbroken.”

But then, another twist! Last week’s winners gathered in the werkroom for their first out-of-drag meeting with Mama Ru, only to receive some shocking news. The queens would be joined by “someone I don’t think got a fair chance last week,” Ru told them. “And it’s someone I think will fit in well.” Enter… Elliott?!

Tina Burner was understandably confused (“I sent that bitch packing! Why is she back?”), but as Ru explained, her decision was made in the spirit of teaching her newest children an important lesson: “No matter what happens in here, out there or online, don’t let anyone make you feel like a loser.”

After receiving their marching orders for this week’s mini challenge — a runway show featuring a “ladylike daytime look” and a “vampy nighttime look that says, ‘I’m a whore!’” — the queens got ready to rumble, with tensions already flaring between Elliott and Kandy Muse. The drama began when Elliott asked Kandy if she was worried that being a member of a famous drag family — she’s the daughter of Aja and sister of Dahlia Sin — could end up being a curse that will get her sent home early. The question felt a little scripted (we’ve got to call it like we see it!), but the angry reaction from Kandy was real.

Mini challenge time! Gottmik kicked things off in a tight latex dress decorated to resemble a sunny day (one of our favorite looks of the night!), then switched things up with an ensemble befitting a “spooky seductress.” She completed the look with a tasteful pastie, explaining that she enjoys baring her chest now that she’s had top surgery. Next up, Kandy rocked a red-and-gold flowy look to prove that “a big girl can be fashion forward.” Unfortunately, the judges were considerably less impressed by her second look, which was basically a devil costume with a hole where the tail was presumably supposed to go.

LaLa Ri went for a “Southern belle” motif in a simple gown, an experience that was only memorable because she got her heel stuck in the dress and almost fell. For her second look, LaLa opted for “pleather, not leather. A bitch can’t afford it. But I’m still serving like it’s leather!” Next up, Olivia Lux transitioned from a “lavender fantasy” by day to a glittery, burgundy number for “a night at the opera.”

Symone turned up the fun in a ’90s-inspired striped pantsuit, complete with a surprise cape, followed by a look that was part mother goddess-meets-Matrix. (“The bitch has arrived!”) Up next, Tina lived her Carrie Bradshaw fantasy, before squeezing herself into a sexy latex look. (“My boots are up to my p–y!”) And then there was Elliott, who kept her daytime look red and tight, before whisking us away to a “gentleman’s club on fetish night.”

With that double runway behind them, the queens proceeded to this week’s main challenge: a group performance — complete with self-written solo verses — of RuPaul’s “Condragulations.” The rehearsal process went relatively smoothly, but when it came time for Gottmik to practice her part, she explained, “My gender dysphoria took over my soul.” She had hoped to discuss her transgender journey with her fellow queens in the right setting, but now here she was singing about it as part of a big group number. Fortunately, she was able to open up to some of her Season 13 sisters later on in the episode, receiving plenty of love and encouragement. (For the record, Gottmik uses the pronouns “she/her” while in drag, and “he/him” out of drag.)

This week’s runway (“Lamé, You Stay!”) found Gottmik embracing her inner sea dragon, Kandy giving us an “Austin Powers fembot moment” in a furry nightgown, LaLa looking like a “limited edition Willy Wonka” chocolate bar, Olivia channeling a “water lily goddess,” Symone gearing up to fight someone in a fashionable boxing getup, Tina serving Tin Man realness, and Elliott living her “rhinestone titty fantasy.”

After announcing Olivia and Symone as the top two queens, Ru dropped yet another twist: “This week, there are no bottoms. Only tops… with the exception of the judges’ panel, of course.” That meant no one was going home, and that Olivia and Symone would instead be lip syncing for a $ 5,000 cash tip. And from the moment Dua Lipa’s “Break My Heart” started playing, the battle was on. Condragulations, Symone!
