Here come The Brides!

ABC on Wednesday announced that it has handed a pilot order to The Brides, a “sexy contemporary reimagining” of Dracula with “strong horror elements.” The potential series, from Riverdale exec producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is described as “a vampire soap about empowered, immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy,” with “a trio of powerful female leads at its heart.”

Aguirre-Sacasa is set to write the pilot, which hails from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Maggie Kiley (Riverdale, Katy Keene) is on board to direct and will also serve as an EP, alongside Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

If The Brides sounds familiar, that’s because it was previously in development at NBC back in 2015, but it did not go forward to series.

Characters in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, the Brides of Dracula are seductive vampire “sisters” who reside with the eponymous bloodsucker in Transylvania and entrance their prey with their beauty and charm, if not their overbite.

In addition to The Brides, ABC previously handed a put-pilot commitment to Rebel, a drama inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich, from Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff. Also in development is Epic, a romantic anthology series set in the Disney fairytale universe, EP’d by Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis; and a Revenge follow-up, from original series creator Mike Kelley.

However, after feeding on Jonathan Harker, Dracula begins to retain his strength and looks more youthful.

After spending more than a hundred years at the bottom of the sea with no source of blood, it may seem odd that the vampire has retained his youth.

What happens when Dracula needs to get away from it all? If “he goes on a cruise” wasn’t the first thing to spring to mind (and it shouldn’t have been, because, well, sunlight), then you may be surprised by the Hotel Transylvania 3 trailer, which is all about the world’s most famous vampire and his extended clan going on a vacation.

Hotel Transylvania 3 follows 2012’s Hotel Transylvania and 2015’s Hotel Transylvania 2, which revealed that Count Dracula spends his days running a hotel for monsters and trying to raise a family. I never saw either of them, but they made a lot of money (they broke September box office records and everything at the time) and inspired a Disney Channel show that premiered this year. In part three, Dracula takes a break from giving other other monsters a vacation and sets out on a vacation of his own. Will things go well? Will they encounter a mysterious enemy who threatens monster-kind? Have you ever seen a motion picture before?

Hotel Transylvania 3 Trailer

These movies have completely washed by me, but they seem to have an audience. And honestly, I find it hard to muster much blind snark toward a series of family movies that may convince kids to seek out old school monster movies. If a Dracula voiced by Adam Sandler teaches the next generation about Bela Lugosi, then something is being done right. Plus, this series is keeping director Genndy Tartakovsky employed and surely animation fans are happy to see the creator of Samurai Jack working on big movies for big audiences.

Hotel Transylvania 3 opens on July 13, 2018 and also features the voices of Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, David Spade, Molly Shannon, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Asher Blinkoff, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, and Mel Brooks. Here’s the official synopsis:

We already know that It director Andy Muschietti wants to make directing an It sequel a priority before he jumps over to helm a live-action adaptation of Robotech, but now we can add one more project to his ever-growing plate: a Dracula prequel called Dracul.

But unlike 2014’s Dracula Untold, this movie will be the first prequel that’s actually authorized by the estate of original Dracula author Bram Stoker. Plus, this project has an even deeper connection to that family: Stoker’s great-grandnephew co-wrote the book on which this is based.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has acquired the screen rights to Dracul. It’s an as-yet-unpublished prequel co-written by Dacre Stoker and horror author J.D. Barker, and the story “is set in 1868, where a 21-year old Bram Stoker meets with an ungodly evil that he traps in an ancient tower all the while scribbling the events that led him there.” That diary-style format fits in well with the history of the property; the original novel was written as a series of letters, diary entries, and news articles told from different perspectives.

(Deadline isn’t clear about whether Stoker and Barker will also work on the screenplay, but since neither have much screenwriting experience, it seems unlikely.)

Historically speaking, the word “Dracul,” which means “dragon,” was a nickname given to the father of Vlad the Impaler, the 15th century warrior who supposedly served as the inspiration for Stoker’s vampire. “Dracula” means “son of the dragon,” so does the title indicate that this prequel story will involve Dracula’s father in some way? I don’t know, I’m just a guy who likes to pose questions.

And how does this film affect the Dark Universe movies, which gather classic Universal monsters like The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, and The Mummy into a shared cinematic universe? We don’t yet know who will be playing Dracula in Universal’s inevitable updating of that property – do they really still plan on having Untold star Luke Evans come back to reprise the role? – but it seems clear from the vampire’s prominent placement in the Dark Universe announcement video that the studio has plans to incorporate him into their interconnected films sometime in the future. And since it’s probably going to be a while before Muschietti gets around to making Dracul, the timing could mean that two different incarnations of Dracula are in two different movies at the same time. Paramount desperately needs another hit franchise, so as long as they can make sure general audiences know the difference between franchises, maybe a Dracula movie could, ironically, be a lifesaver for them.

To those who may be mourning the absence of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss‘ modern adaptation of Sherlock, here’s some good news. No, it’s not that more Sherlock episodes are on the way (although further installments still remain a distant possibility in the future), it’s that the pair of writers will reunite for a new TV show centered on a different character from classical literature: Bram Stoker’s iconic vampire Dracula. Read on to discover everything we know about the new show so far.

Variety reports that Moffat and Gatiss will also reunite with Sherlock producer Sue Vertue and her Hartswood Films for the new show. The show is still in the early stages – no scripts have been written yet, so no casting choices have been made – but the BBC is, predictably, interested in broadcasting the show in the U.K. as it did with Sherlock.

The new show will follow the same format as Sherlock, delivering a miniseries run of feature-length episodes, but it’s unclear whether the show will be set in modern day or be a period piece in keeping with Stoker’s 1897 novel.

Moffat is perhaps best known for his work writing and producing Doctor Who and Sherlock, but there’s one other project on his resume that may provide a hint at how he’ll handle Dracula. The writer worked with Vertue’s Hartswood Films on a fun 2007 miniseries called Jekyll that was a modern retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. So along with Sherlock Holmes, Moffat already has experience with another major literary character under his belt. He seems to have a knack for bringing old characters into a modern setting, so I’d put some decent money on Dracula taking place in 2018 (or whatever year it happens to be released).

Gatiss was the co-showrunner of Sherlock and is also an actor, having appeared on that series as the detective’s brother, Mycroft Holmes, and popping up on Game of Thrones as a Braavosi banker named Tycho Nestoris. Variety points out that Gatiss has previously expressed his love of Hammer horror films, and he singled out praise for Peter Cushing’s performance in Dracula.

Hardcore fans out there inspired by Sherlock Holmes to attempt to piece together the mystery of what Moffat and Gatiss’s new take on Dracula might be like are now armed with all of the knowledge we know about the show. Good luck, and godspeed.
