An ill-timed visit to his mom’s room at the start of the Season 6 finale leaves Dre with a visual he can’t expunge from his memory: Ruby and Pops having sex. Bow’s husband is near-catatonic when the four adults sit down to discuss the fact that Dre’s parents apparently have reunited in secret and are a romantic couple once more. “We have decided to give our love one more shot,” Pops informs them, but Dre isn’t having it.
Using the “my house, my rules” concept, Dre marches up to Ruby and says he won’t allow his father to use her like he has in the past. But the reunion was Ruby’s idea, and she tells him not to worry: The things she and Pops used to fight about, like kids and money, aren’t issues anymore. Then she decides to show her affection for Pops by buying him a boat (to replace the one she blew up) so they can sail around Catalina that weekend.
Eventually, Dre realizes that he’s afraid of losing his hard-won relationship with Pops if the two break up again. So he issues an ultimatum: Either Ruby dumps his dad, or they both have to be out by the end of the week. Ruby chooses the latter, devastating Dre.
Only after Bow points out that Ruby is more than just Dre’s mom (“It’s her time now”) does Dre see how ridiculous he’s been. So he and Bow show up to join the kids at the dock to see Pops and Ruby off on their mini-trip. Dre apologizes for his behavior, and his mom forgives him. “You and I have gone through a lot,” he tells her. “And whatever’s gonna happen next, I’m gonna go through that with you, too.”
True story: While watching a screener, I was very worried that Pops was going to croak at the end of this episode. And my relief that he didn’t was so great that it was the first thing I mentioned to series star Laurence Fishburne when we chatted earlier this week. Read on to hear what he had to say about Pops’ new-old romance and how acting in Contagion nearly a decade ago gave him a unique perspective on our current situation.
TVLINE | I have to tell you that when ABC was like, “Do you want to talk to Laurence Fishburne about the finale of black-ish?” I’m like, “Oh my God, Pops is dying.”
[Laughs loudly]
TVLINE | I was worried from the very first moment of the screener until the absolute end! Because there are all these lines fresh starts and new love and how they’re going to get it right this time…
[Laughs] Yeah. [Laughs]
TVLINE | You had me there for a minute.
Well, good. Good. [Laughs] We did our job again.
TVLINE | I’m very glad Pops is going to stick around for the foreseeable future, but this is a new side of him. We’ve not seen him this consistently happy… ever?
No. He’s a happy dude, right?
TVLINE | Do you recall when you first heard that Pops and Ruby would give it another go?
I think [producers] were always interested in exploring that, even as early as Season 3. And it just seemed like now was the right time. It just seemed like organically it made sense, you know?
Zoey has gone off to school, and Junior is still sort of on that gap year, and so that’s starting to resolve itself. Jack and Diane being real teenagers, all of those things that happen in a family, and now the golden years for Pop and Ruby seems to be a natural kind of extension of all of that.
TVLINE | Jenifer Lewis has said how much that you guys enjoy working with each other. Talk to me about playing your scenes now that Ruby and Pops are getting along so well.
It’s fantastic. At least for me, there’s always the underlying affection that they have for one another. That’s never really missing, even in those harsh moments, if you will. I just feel like we have earned this, you know what I mean? Along with our audience, we have really earned this. I think it’s also something that the audience is really hungry for, in a way.
TVLINE | Dre has a realization that he would really miss the relationship he’s built with his father if Pops and Ruby were to break up again. Do you think those feelings are reciprocal?
Good question. Not really sure. I haven’t really given that much thought to that one. As I do think about it, I’m compelled to tell you that it feels like with Pops, he knows how lucky he is to have a son like Dre who’s done so well in spite of his own challenges, and who has the grace to allow Pops to live with him and his family, you know what I mean? He’s acutely aware of that, and at the same time, of course he would never admit it, he’s got to be envious of it. There’s some of that lack of giving Dre the approval that he craves, it really comes from that place. But I also think that he is beyond grateful for the life that Dre and Bow provide for him.I don’t think that’s lost on him, and he would be devastated if that was ever taken away.
And he knows that he can be a bit of a burden. So this is a natural and really beautifully organic way of moving into the next chapter. Pops and Ruby are getting together and they’re going to explore what life in the future will be for the two of them if they approach it differently.
TVLINE | What’s your opinion on whether Pops and Ruby will be successful this time?
They already love each other. So, that part is a given, right? They’re successful in that. So, I think that because the love is there that it’s already successful. But you know, the practical stuff — they’re going to have to figure that out. That’s where the comedy comes in. That’s where you, you know?
TVLINE | Have you heard anything about a potential Season 7? Obviously, everything is shut down right now.
I haven’t heard much about Season 7. I’ve heard that they are attempting to figure out how we can shoot safely, how we can go back into the sound stages. They’re talking about doing things so that everybody stays healthy and that nobody contracts this horrible virus. And that’s going to take some real time and some serious thought.
TVLINE | Along those lines: So many people have been referencing Contagion on social media since the quarantine started. Who knew that when you played the head of the Centers for Disease Control in that movie that it would be real-life training at some point?
[Laughs] Yeah, who knew I was going to be Dr. Fauci? I mean, it’s crazy. I’m having my own Dr. Fauci moment! [Laughs]
TVLINE | If I remember correctly, I think there’s even a line or two where your character in the movie talks about how the United States is made up of 50 states with 50 governors who’ll do what they deem right, so it’s hard to set standards. That was prescient.
[Laughs] Yeah. It was really something. And hey, it’s a great reference for people that want to understand what we’re really dealing with, you know? If you don’t really understand it, if you got questions, it’s a great film to watch to get your understanding for where we really are.

Dr. Joseph Pober claims the sparkling résumé you’d expect of a Park Avenue plastic surgeon: valedictorian of his class at Columbia, Harvard Medical School, a prestigious residency, and 20 years in a thriving private practice a few short blocks from the Met.
But he possesses a rarer distinction still: Pober has recently rebranded himself on social media as “Dr. Redpill,” and he’s now the toast of the pro-Trump internet.
The 63-year-old surgeon once lauded by Hamptons Magazine as “New York’s Top Park Avenue Plastic Surgeon” has lately been treating some of Trump Twitter’s most notorious figures, while making time to pose pre-op in a #MAGA hat, and appear on Sean Hannity’s and Bill Mitchell’s radio shows.
Er, why?
Ever since video of the white nationalist Richard Spencer being sucker punched by a masked man on Inauguration Day went viral, the entire spectrum of the pro-Trump media — from hardcore alt-right blogs to Fox News — has fretted about the threat of political violence against Trump supporters. And when a prominent pro-Trumper had his nose broken and face cut in an apparently politically motivated Manhattan bar fight after the launch of conservative rabble-rouser Milo Yiannopoulos’ book earlier this month, the pro-Trump media finally had a grisly example of violence against a Trump supporter who wasn’t a neo-Nazi.
And Pober soon had a Trump-internet-famous patient. Jovanni Valle, the victim, had in June stormed the stage of the now-infamous Public Theater production of Julius Caesar. His fellow showstopper, conservative activist Laura Loomer, immediately began tweeting photos of the bloody aftermath, and attempting to crowdsource his medical bills. A follower put Loomer in touch with Megin Klunck-DeCarlo, who runs Pober’s New Jersey medical spa, and convinced the doctor to arrange a consultation.
Pober was horrified by Valle’s story.
“Political hate crimes should never be tolerated,” he told BuzzFeed News. “If there is anything that can be done to frustrate that development in America, every effort should be made. [Otherwise], it will escalate.”
Moved, Pober offered to perform the necessary reconstruction gratis — operations for which, all told, he would normally charge up to $ 30,000. Last week, Pober repaired Valle’s broken nose, sutured a cut on his cheek, and drained a hematoma in his lip — “black, coagulated blood,” Pober told Bill Mitchell. In an Instagram during a recent checkup, Valle called him “an American hero.”
“He’s taking a stance and sending a message against people who think it’s okay to destroy someone…over a disagreement in politics,” Loomer said.
During that initial consultation, talk naturally turned to politics. Loomer and Valle found themselves astonished at the degree to which Pober — a Republican and a Trump supporter — was aware of, as Loomer put it, “all this political violence against the right.” They suggested a nickname: Dr. Redpill, for the Matrix-referencing term popularized by the men’s rights movement — and later adopted by much of the conservative internet — which refers to politically incorrect epiphanies about feminist and liberal control of Western culture. And so a new Instagram account and a fledgling Twitter hashtag were born.
“I see no reason not to be the pro-Trump plastic surgeon,” Pober said. “I’m proud to be an American.”
Many of the most popular “redpills” — Jews control the world, the West is under existential threat from Muslim immigration — repeat age-old, highly offensive tropes about minority groups. Pober and Loomer, who is Jewish, insist that the nickname means no such thing.
“My understanding of redpilled is simply to be able to think for one’s self without the fear of violent repercussion,” Pober said.
Loomer added, “I was simply making a reference to the redpill, the truth serum, being awake and aware of reality. It was very innocent – no underlying conspiracy. As a Jew, I don’t think I’d be giving someone a name if it had an anti-Semitic overtone.”
In the next month, Loomer plans to undergo a rhinoplasty, Pober’s self-described speciality. (Loomer described as “absurd” and “sexist” online rumors that she was paying for the $ 15,000 operation with money from her two crowdsourced legal defense funds related to the Julius Caesar incident.)
“I think having a beautiful nose for whatever reason is a fantastic thing,” Pober said.
Pober, who has appeared on Oprah and CBS, said he would not be performing Loomer’s nose job for free, and that his recent rebranding was in no way “a business opportunity.” He said he would be open to making financial accommodations in the future for cases like Valle’s when “medically necessary,” as well as for “burn victims.”
“I want to help as many people as I possibly can,” Pober said. “America isn’t a country where you can’t get health care. Everyone has health care in America.”

Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter announced the murder charges against Dr. Regan Nichols, 57, Friday. The five patients died while she worked at a Midwest City clinic.
The complaint said Nichols’ excessive prescribing showed “a depraved mind” and a lack of regard for human life which led to the deaths of Debra Messner, Lynnette Nelson, Sheila Bartels, Chealsy Dockery, and Deborah Hutcheson.
The affidavit alleges that over a five year period, Nichols prescribed more than 1,800 opioid pills to the patients even though they didn’t need them. She prescribed three of the five patients a lethal combination of painkillers, muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety drugs.
“The dangers associated with opioid drugs have been well documented and most doctors follow strict guidelines when prescribing opioids to their patients. Nichols prescribed patients, who entrusted their well-being to her, a horrifyingly excessive amount of opioid medications,” said Hunter.
“Nichols’ blatant disregard for the lives of her patients is unconscionable.”
An investigation by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics into Nichols began after a concerned former patient tipped off law enforcement that five patients had died of multi-drug toxicity. A state investigation found that Nichols prescribed more than 3 million doses of controlled dangerous drugs from 2010-2014.
After a September 2015 hearing before the Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners, the board stripped Nichols of her prescribing authority of controlled dangerous substances. She voluntarily surrendered her credentials to the Drug Enforcement Administration and Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.
Messner died on March 30, 2010. She was prescribed Hydrocodone, Aplrazolam and Carisoprodol. An autopsy showed she died of “acute combined drug toxicity.”
Nelson, 46, succumbed on March 1, 2012 as a result of combined drug toxicity a month after she was prescribed several controlled drugs by Nichols. A review of Nelson’s file shows that in four years, Nichols had only conducted one full medical evaluation, in December 2008.
Bartels, 55, had a large prescription filled on November 21, 2012, after seeing Nichols. She died the same day of “multi-drug toxicity.” A review of Bartels’ file by a medical expert showed that she was prescribed an “irrational combination” of drugs, according to the affidavit.
Dockery, 21, died of combined drug toxicity on August 4, 2013 just three days after filling a prescription issued by Nichols.
On October 24, 2013, Hutcheson, 52, died of acute multi-drug toxicity. She was prescribed the drugs on October 8, 2013.
An Oklahoma County judge has issued a warrant for her arrest and will be held in lieu of $ 50,000 bond.
The murder charges against Dr. Nichols come as state officials embark on aggressive measures to tackle the opioid epidemic.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 33,000 people died of opioid-related overdoses in the US in 2015, quadruple the rate in 1999. Opioids are the leading cause of overdose deaths in the US, with 91 Americans dying every day.
On Wednesday, the Missouri Attorney General became the third state to sue pharmaceutical companies for fraud. The civil lawsuit claims the firms carried out a complex, multi-year campaign in which they deliberately misrepresented the addictive risks of opioids, and “engaged in a deliberate campaign of fraud to convince Missouri doctors and consumers otherwise,” according to the complaint.
On June 16, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey announced that her office has been working with a bipartisan coalition of state attorney generals to evaluate “whether [pharmaceutical] manufacturers used illegal practices in the marketing and sale of opioids and worsened this deadly crisis.”
In May, the Governor of Ohio, John Kasich, introduced new rules to limit doctors prescribing pain medications to seven days for adults, and no more than five days for minors.
The medications also can provide a gateway to heroin, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which has reported that nearly half of young heroin users state that they had misused prescription opioids first.
Placing limits on doctors prescribing painkillers has already been adopted in other states. Massachusetts limits first-time painkiller prescriptions to 7 days. Other states that have passed laws with prescribing limits within the last year include Connecticut, Maine, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
