Actors from a bunch of your favorite prestige projects are about to join forces in a new one.

Andrew Scott (Fleabag) and Dominic West (The Affair) have joined the cast of The Pursuit of Love, TVLine has learned. They are among the latest additions to the ensemble led by Lily James (Downton Abbey, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again).

Emily Mortimer (The Newsroom) is adapting Nancy Mitford’s novel for BBC One/Amazon Studios. Charles Collier (Top Boy), Matthew Read (Peaky Blinders) and Frith Tiplady (Ripper Street) will executive-produce. Mortimer will write, direct and star.

James will play Linda Radlet in the romantic dramedy, which is set in Europe between World War I and World War II. Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands) will play her best friend/cousin, Fanny.

West and Dolly Wells (Doll & Em) will play Linda’s parents. Scott will play Lord merlin, the Raddletts’ rich and weird neighbor. Mortimer will play Fanny’s mother.

The cast also includes Beattie Edmondson (Bridget Jones’ Baby), Shazad Latif (Star Trek: Discovery) and Freddie Fox (The Crown).

“I’ve always loved Nancy Mitford so when I was asked to adapt The Pursuit of Love it was impossible to say no,” Mortimer said via statement. “It’s an outrageously funny and honest story, whose central character — the wild, love-addicted Linda Radlett — still reads as a radical. I feel privileged to be directing this show and working with the brilliant teams at Open Book, Moonage Pictures, Amazon Studios and the BBC.”

The Pursuit of Love will consist of three 60-minute episodes and will be filmed in the Bristol and Bath areas of the United Kingdom. It will premiere on BBC One in the UK and on Amazon Prime in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Are you feeling like you want to join in on The Pursuit of Love? Sound of in the comments!

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

From snipers on the roof of his mansion to A-list celebrities crashing cars outside his front door, Mr David paints a very different picture from that captured by Lord Julian Fellowes in Belgravia, his new TV drama. But, in essence, Belgravia, he says, is every bit as unique today as it is shown two centuries ago; from politicians to billionaires, council estates to mansions, it is “the beating heart of England”. The six-part series is tipped to be the new Downton Abbey as it follows the lives of nouveau riche businessman James Trenchard (Philip Glenister) and his wife Anne (Tamsin Greig), a tale full of action and intrigue.

Mr David, 52, whose family controls a Coca-Cola bottling giant and who personally runs a string of businesses from holographic theatres to the Swiss CBD firm, grew up in Belgravia.

He says: “Julian Fellowes is a genius and I can understand why he would understand Belgravia’s importance. He is a Conservative peer – slice Belgravia like a stick of rock and it would be true-blue Conservative. Actually, the party treasurer was my next-door neighbour for many years.

“Of course, Julian will know the area is a fantastic backdrop to film in. When I starred with Jason Statham in The Bank Job, a movie about a famous robbery, we shot many scenes in Belgravia. Directors love how it looks.

“Entertainment stars have always loved the area. Last summer, I walked out and bumped straight into my old pal Robbie Williams. He was sauntering along with David Walliams. I was with Chase Ergen, another billionaire…

“Anywhere else that would have been an odd foursome. In Belgravia, it was almost normal.”

Having grown up in the enclave, between Knightsbridge, Chelsea and Westminster, he says: “Belgravia is unparalleled. Nowhere can match the history, culture and power. Belgravia has always been the beating heart of England. It is the corridor into Westminster. True governing decisions are regularly made here, usually while the powerful are enjoying themselves.” And there is a rather more edgy side, too, says Mr David. “The secret underground massage spots around Eaton Square have many tales hidden in their walls.”

He adds: “I’ve lived in Wilton Place for two decades but this area has been in my blood since childhood. I’ve lived through five decades of Belgravian history but it has always defied change. Unlike every other area of London, the area has locked in its magic. It has altered far less than Knightsbridge or Westminster. There is something mystical in how it retained its flavour. Hyde Park is a great doorstep but the best view is from my kitchen window.

“My favourite hotel, the legendary Berkeley, is essentially in my front garden. My home feels like an extension of that magical place. The staff carry my meals over on silver trays.”

Belgravia has always been a magnet for the stars. “Over the years I have observed the great and the not-so-good cause mischief and mayhem,” he says. “The stars and power players all come to this spot to secretly play.

“I remember eating breakfast in my kitchen one morning at 6.30am and I look up to see a Hollywood actor crashing a black Porsche into the hotel before staggering out drunk.

“Once Yasser Arafat was waiting to get into his car. Suddenly the tiny man stepped away from the kerb, heading straight into moving traffic. Next I see Jim the doorman leaping over and grabbing him.

“I bring all my Hollywood friends to stay here, like Val Kilmer and Billy Zane.”

Describing growing up here, Mr David says: “When I was a kid I was aware that Sloane Street was the street that glued Belgravia and Knightsbridge together. “My first job as a young teen was on that road, handing flyers out for Scissors hairdressers.

“My very favourite place is Belgravia Square. Nearly every embassy is there, surrounded by police and high-tech security, but right in the middle is a secret garden, like a miniature Hyde Park. “I have a key, Belgravia residents are allowed. I love going along to that paradise – it’s at its finest in the winter snow.

Belgravia also has long had a council estate. It dates back to the 1930s, something people don’t realise. Part of what makes London great is that social housing is sprinkled everywhere.

“Forty years ago, Belgravia had a sleepiness. An essence of that remains but it is undoubtedly more cosmopolitan and alive. The pub culture has died and the Qataris have taken over an entire block at the end of my street.

“Like any great love, my relationship with Belgravia has had its rocky moments. The media loved it when the council tried to force me to pull down a new conservatory, because it was an inch too high!

“I won that battle but my home has seen some incredible action. During the Iranian embassy siege the whole area was affected and there were police gunmen.

“On another occasion a burglar burnt a hole through my roof and stole a load of stuff. We caught him by his DNA.

“I adore Belgravia and I hope viewers who watch Julian Fellowes’s TV series will fall as in love with the place as I am.”

Belgravia started tonight on ITV at 9pm

Downton Abbey Movie: Why Lily James’ Rose Didn’t Return for the Royal Visit https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-why-lily-james-rose-didnt-return-for-the-royal-visit/ https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-why-lily-james-rose-didnt-return-for-the-royal-visit/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2019 13:36:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-why-lily-james-rose-didnt-return-for-the-royal-visit/

The Downton Abbey movie may feel like a complete Crawley family reunion, but one key member is missing in action for the big-screen soiree — and fans have taken notice.

Specifically, they’re wondering what happened to Robert’s trouble-making cousin Rose Aldridge (played by Lily James), last seen celebrating Christmas at Downton in the 2015 series finale. The character made quite a splash when she joined the hit show in 2012, and even when she moved out of the abbey with her new husband, she was never far from our minds.

“Lily wanted to make a cameo, but [series creator Julian Fellowes] was like, ‘There’s not enough room,’” Allen Leech (aka Tom Branson) explained during an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live earlier this week. “It would be a bit weird if she [randomly showed up] and was like, ‘Hi, I hear the royals are here!’”

To be fair, fans probably shouldn’t be too surprised by Rose’s absence. After all, James confirmed her character’s status when the film was first greenlit in 2018, telling People, “My character Rose moved to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back. … I would have loved to have come back for a scene, but for a movie it can’t be like a Christmas special. It needs to be a focused storyline. There was no space for Rose.”

“Maybe [she could do it] if there’s another one,” Leech added. “We could visit her in New York!”

At last, Downton Abbey movie filming starts https://briefnews.eu/at-last-downton-abbey-movie-filming-starts/ https://briefnews.eu/at-last-downton-abbey-movie-filming-starts/#respond Fri, 21 Sep 2018 04:09:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/at-last-downton-abbey-movie-filming-starts/

And Penelope, 72, who plays her sparring partner Isobel Crawley, was seen at the 17th‑century Old Grammar School in the village which doubles as Downton Cottage Hospital.

The two were also filmed at St Mary’s Church, which is St Michael and All Angels Church in the TV series. Downton ran for six seasons between 2010 and 2015 on ITV.

The scenes between Dame Maggie and Penelope were among the most popular with fans.

The finale on Christmas Day 2015 was watched by almost 11 million viewers.

There have long been rumours of a film version and after protracted negotiations, filming began this week.

The movie is due for release on September 13 next year.

Most of the cast favourites have returned, including Hugh Bonneville as the Earl of Grantham, Michelle Dockery as his daughter Lady Mary and Joanne Froggatt as maid Anna Bates.

New faces include Imelda Staunton, Tuppence Middleton and David Haig.

Downton Abbey FILM slated for summer 2018 https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-film-slated-for-summer-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-film-slated-for-summer-2018/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 00:35:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-film-slated-for-summer-2018/

But they have not yet been able to sign up all of the cast from the TV series for the £25million silver screen version in summer 2018.

Dame Maggie Smith has said that she does not want to return.

Show creator Julian Fellowes is delighted at the film confirmation.

He wants to stick to the script he penned over a year ago and he does not want to change the plot because actors are unavailable.

But the success has made a headache for executives.

Fellowes said: “Trying to get everyone in one place, it’s like herding cats.”

Big names such as Elizabeth McGovern (Countess of Grantham), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates) and Hugh Bonneville (Earl of Grantham) have seen their careers soar thanks to the award-winning show.

The cast insist they want to return to the Abbey, which ended on ITV on Christmas Day 2015.

An insider said: “For months some of the cast have been dancing around a return, which made this year a no go.

“But now they are pushing ahead. They have a few people locked in and others verbally agreed, so they are going for it now. Rounding up the actors has been tough with so many seeing their careers explode on both sides of the pond, but they are determined to work it all out.”

Last month some of the cast admitted that there were issues with the movie schedule but added that it was “still a possibility”.

Allen Leech (Tom Branson) said: “There’s a great willingness among all of us to do it.”

Fellowes is still holding out hope Dame Maggie (Dowager Countess of Grantham) will return.

She has complained of the fame that the series has brought her and she feels that a Downton movie would be “squeezing the story dry”.

Executive producer Gareth Neame insisted that the film should feature Dame Maggie.

He said: “I think it would be a real loss without her and I’d hope very much that she’d want to be in the movie with everyone else.”

Neame added that there have been strings of rumours about her leaving the show from the beginning, which were unfounded. He has said that even if the Downton Abbey film is a hit, there will be no return to television.

He added: “There is any number of ways the show could spin off, but it is not going to happen within this lifetime of the show and not by us.”

Highclere Castle, near Newbury, Berkshire, where the original series was filmed, will be closed to visitors from May 30 to July 7 to allow exterior and interior filming.

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery strips NUDE for racy romp in US thriller Good Behavior https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-star-michelle-dockery-strips-nude-for-racy-romp-in-us-thriller-good-behavior/ https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-star-michelle-dockery-strips-nude-for-racy-romp-in-us-thriller-good-behavior/#respond Mon, 30 Oct 2017 11:38:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-star-michelle-dockery-strips-nude-for-racy-romp-in-us-thriller-good-behavior/

Michelle, 35, is known as Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary Crawley, but she looked worlds away from her previous part as she flashed the flesh alongside hitman boyfriend Javier; who is played by Argentine-Spanish actor Juan Diego Botto, 42.

The actress – who plays con-woman Letty Raines in the US thriller series – could be seen with her on-screen beau in one sizzling screen shot, which showed the pair enjoying a racy romp.

The duo’s steamy clinch occurred while they were on a luxury Christmas holiday at a secluded hotel in the mountains.

This certainly isn’t the first time Michelle has been seen getting up, close and personal, as just seconds into the series launch, her alter ego got caught up in the throes of passion with Javier once again.

Wearing little more than a silky slip, the brunette beauty writhed around with her other half up against a wall.

Previously discussing the drama with Parade, Michelle said people will be able to relate to Letty’s far from perfect ways.

“In some way, we’re all driven to be the best version of ourselves, and the fact that she’s a con artist, a thief, and an ex-drug addict, it’s just the size of things, really,” she said.

Michelle continued: “It’s simply the human part of her, but she’s just trying to better herself, and she’s flawed.

“She’s nowhere near perfect, so I think people identify with her, in the same way that they do with Javier.”

Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville on his return as W1A’s Ian Fletcher https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-star-hugh-bonneville-on-his-return-as-w1as-ian-fletcher/ https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-star-hugh-bonneville-on-his-return-as-w1as-ian-fletcher/#respond Sat, 16 Sep 2017 01:27:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-star-hugh-bonneville-on-his-return-as-w1as-ian-fletcher/

No TV show has skewered the pointless waffle of corporate-speak and buzzword business jargon better than W1A and its predecessor, Twenty Twelve. The BBC2 sitcoms starring Hugh Bonneville take the mickey out of committee meetings in which members babble in techno-speak, but nobody says anything and nothing gets done.

Downton Abbey’s Hugh shows off his flair for comedy as W1A’s Ian Fletcher, the BBC’s painfully polite Head of Values, who sports a permanent expression of bafflement as he sits in meetings in Mary Berry – BBC HQ’s meeting rooms are, apparently, named after celebrities – and tries to make sense of all the pointless waffle.

W1A’s appeal lies in the fact that although it’s set at the BBC, it could be about meetings anywhere, explains Hugh.

“I think it’s very simple, but if you’ve sat on a church hall committee or a FTSE 100 [company] board or even around the dinner table at home, the dynamics of those meetings are very recognisable,” says Hugh, 53, looking dapper at the launch in a green summer suit.

“I think the character tropes are recognisable and John [writer John Morton] skewers them with brilliance.”

Hugh’s Ian is surrounded by a confederacy of dunces and buffoons that include Sarah Parish as stony-faced Director of Better Anna Rampton, Jason Watkins as chirpy Director of Strategic Governance Simon Harwood, and Jessica Hynes as verbally incontinent, buzzword-spouting Brand Consultant Siobhan Sharpe.

Monica Dolan plays the BBC Head of PR Tracey Pritchard and Nina Sosanya is Director of Inclusivity Lucy Freeman, one of the saner employees who also appears to have a crush on Ian Fletcher.

Lucy represents us, says Nina, 48, best known for playing Sarah Lancashire’s doomed wife in Last Tango In Halifax. “Lucy is the audience, seeing the insanity around her and being unable to extricate herself from it and becoming part of it against her will,” muses Nina.

“She stays because she feels needed, she keeps getting offered a little more and a little more, and she has a sense of responsibility. She loves the BBC as well.”

Adding authenticity to W1A is the shooting location – almost half is filmed at BBC Broadcasting House in central London, with real BBC employees in the background. Although that can create occasional tension – for example when real staff members must wait to exit the building if the actors are filming at the revolving doors – the W1A cast report that BBC employees seem to love the show.

“There have never been more selfies taken than when we’re in the BBC building, which you would think would be too cool for school,” says Hugh. “But when we were filming there, [BBC Security Correspondent] Frank Gardner was buzzing around taking selfies with us in the background.

”The most surreal collision of real and fictional BBC worlds happened when actor David Westhead, who plays W1A’s Controller of News and Current Affairs Neil Reid, received a phone call from a BBC news producer asking if he’d give a speech at a real newsman’s retirement party. “I sat there and I said, ‘You do know I’m not the real Head of News and Current Affairs?’” recalls David, 53, with a laugh. “And they said, ‘Yes, but he’s a great fan of the show.’

“So I went into the newsroom and they said, ‘Say whatever you like.’ And I had no idea who this person was and no idea what to say, so I said, ‘You’ve been useless for the past 25 years. Clear your desk now. You’re a disgrace!’ He liked it.”

The first and second episodes sow plot seeds that grow nicely as they send the committee into a growing panic. The first item to tie them up in knots is a sensitive PR issue, when a retired footballer, Ryan Chalford (In The Dark’s Ben Batt), complains publicly that Match Of The Day has spurned him as a presenter solely because he’s a cross-dresser. Cue a funny scene between Batt, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. Other big name stars will make appearances throughout the series, promises Morton.

Hynes’ Siobhan Sharpe has moved to a new agency, where she’s faced with a raft of daft PR types like her own younger self. Will, the intern (The Windsors’ Hugh Skinner), finds that his great idea for a TV show called On Your Bike has been stolen by his slimy colleagues, who may have to reckon with producer Izzy (Ophelia Lovibond), who’s on Will’s side.

This third series will be W1A’s last, claims writer John Morton, after taking a whole year to find stories and write it. Plus, the quickfire dialogue is hellish for the actors to get right, reports Hugh.

“It is very hard to learn,” he explains. “Normally in breaks in filming you sit around reading the paper or having coffee, but we just sat there panicking, going over and over and over the lines.

“Because even though it does come across as naturalistic and even improvised, it’s not. And because we all want to support what John has orchestrated we all feel a great responsibility to get it right.”

Liar: Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt almost TURNED DOWN role over second rape plot https://briefnews.eu/liar-downton-abbey-star-joanne-froggatt-almost-turned-down-role-over-second-rape-plot/ https://briefnews.eu/liar-downton-abbey-star-joanne-froggatt-almost-turned-down-role-over-second-rape-plot/#respond Mon, 11 Sep 2017 16:51:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/liar-downton-abbey-star-joanne-froggatt-almost-turned-down-role-over-second-rape-plot/

Starring alongside Ioan Gruffudd in the six-part thriller, Liar tells the story of a night that changes the lives of Laura Newell (Joanne) and Andrew Ellis (Ioan) forever.

Liar explores the devastating cost of deceit on both the couple and their friends and family, as secrets and lies are laid bare.

Speaking to Express.co.uk at a press screening, Joanne said: “Obviously, the show is a thriller. That’s ultimately what it is.

“I think nearly every thriller is built around a terrible event. In this case the accusation is sexual assault. Approaching it in an acting way you have to be playing the truth of your character.”

It’s not the first time Joanne, who played lady’s maid Anna Bates in Downton Abbey has dealt with the controversial subject of rape.

In 2015, viewers were left shocked when her gentle character was brutally attacked by visiting valet Mr Green (played by Nigel Harman).

Explaining her reservations of playing out a rape plot once again, Joanne said: “Yeah, absolutely. It was a thought process. I did sort of read it and go, ‘Oh, if only it was a different subject matter’.

“Obviously when I started Downton, my character was lovely and she wasn’t going through a traumatic time and it was sort of a love story. So I didn’t know I was going to be given that storyline. I still stand by that storyline completely and utterly, and the show for doing it.

“But then I sort of said to myself, ‘This character is so completely different in every way. This character doesn’t make the right decisions and this character is flawed’. Laura is flawed. She does things that  I had to ask ‘Why? Why? That’s just not a good thing to do’. That really interested me.”

The 37-year-old actress continued: “No matter which way the story goes, I just think it’s a great thing to be a part of something that can open up conversation about a sensitive subject matter.

“I’ve played a murderer three times, so you kind of go, ‘You know actually it’s okay,’ I’m an actress, I’ve been doing it for 20 years, sometimes subject matters are going to come around again.”

Liar starts tonight on at 9pm.

Downton Abbey MOVIE? Lily James teases fans as she says 'definitely discussions going on' https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-lily-james-teases-fans-as-she-says-definitely-discussions-going-on/ https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-lily-james-teases-fans-as-she-says-definitely-discussions-going-on/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2017 16:03:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-lily-james-teases-fans-as-she-says-definitely-discussions-going-on/

Lily, 28, who played flighty Lady Rose in the show, revealed that discussions to bring it to cinemas were “definitely” under way.

Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, Baby Driver, Lily said: “There’s definitely rumours and discussions going on.”

When pressed if she was involved in those discussions, she smiled and replied: “Um, maybe.”

The saga of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants ended on Christmas Day 2015 after six seasons.

The finale delighted fans with happy endings all round – even for Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), the most beleaguered of all the show’s characters who endured being jilted by one fiance, the death of another who left her pregnant and the endless sniping of her elder sister Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).

Edith ended up ahead of Mary in the social pecking order when she married a Marquess while Mary married a second-hand car dealer, albeit an upper crust one.

The downstairs staff were also blessed with Anna (Joanne Frogatt) and Bates (Brendan Coyle) welcoming a baby boy and tricky footman Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) being saved from redundancy by being given the job of assistant butler to Carson (Jim Carter).

Creator Julian Fellowes never ruled out a big screen version.

On Tuesday in a web chat with fans he said he was awaiting the “green light” from a studio.

He wrote: “I know the cast are behind it and there’s a big audience out there.

“On most movies, unless it’s Spider-Man 6, you’re taking a punt. But it’s pretty likely the Downton movie will happen.”

But though most cast members have been enthusiastic about the prospect of reuniting on the big screen, fans could be in for a major disappointment because and a film version would be “squeezing it dry”.

The veteran actress, who delighted viewers with her performance as the Dowager Countess, said that the “meandering” plotlines of the series would not translate to film

She said: “They talk about there being a film but who knows. I hope you might tell me if you do know.”

Lily, 28, stars as the love interest of a getaway driver in Shaun Of The Dead director Edgar Wright’s latest film.

Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx also feature in the star-studded line-up.

Downton Abbey movie plans slammed by Dame Maggie Smith – she wants to be KILLED OFF https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-plans-slammed-by-dame-maggie-smith-she-wants-to-be-killed-off/ https://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-plans-slammed-by-dame-maggie-smith-she-wants-to-be-killed-off/#respond Sun, 09 Apr 2017 20:07:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/downton-abbey-movie-plans-slammed-by-dame-maggie-smith-she-wants-to-be-killed-off/

Plans have long been rumoured for the massively successful ITV series to hit the big screen, with several cast members expressing interest.

Smith, however, is not so keen.

Speaking at the BFI yesterday at Radio Times’ Television Festival, she said: “They talk about there being a film but who knows. I hope you might tell me if you do know.

“I just think it’s squeezing it dry, do you know what I mean? I don’t know what it could possibly be. It’s too meandering.

“Anyway, that’s not my problem, is it? That’s the Lord’s [Julian Fellowes] problem.”

Nodding towards the Dowager Countess’s possible fate, she added: “I could croak it, and it would just start with the body.”

The 82-year-old has never made any secret of the fact that she didn’t actually watch Downton while it was on-air, and was relieved for it to finish.

Speaking this weekend on the attention it brought her, she said: “It’s ridiculous. I led a perfectly normal life until Downton Abbey.

“I’m not kidding. I would go to theatres, I would go to galleries and things like that on my own.

“And now I can’t. And that’s awful. [Even] the Fulham Road’s dodgy.

“And it’s all through television. I had been working for a very long time before Downton Abbey and life was fine, nobody knew who the hell I was.”

Phyllis Logan recently said of a possible big screen outing: “We’d love to have one last hurrah, but it’d be like herding cats.

“The will is definitely there with everybody involved. So, fingers crossed that we can make it all come about at some stage.”
