Alexander Payne‘s Downsizing hits Blu-ray this week. In honor of the release, we have a prize pack for those of you who enjoy free things. See the details for the Downsizing contest below.
If you’d like to get your hands on a Downsizing Blu-ray, or some other Downsize-related items, today is your lucky day. In honor of the film’s Blu-ray release, we’re giving away a grand prize that includes several Downsize promotional items, as well as a 4K Blu-ray (and mini .4K). We’re also giving away three 4K Blu-rays as secondary prizes.
Behold the grand prize pack below.
If you’re curious about what the mini .4K Blu-ray is, I’ve included an image (quarter for scale).

In Downsizing, the threat of overpopulation has inspired an ingenious solution.
A pioneering institute in Norway has developed a successful process of human miniaturisation and the benefits are enormous.
There could be plenty of room for everyone. Food and fuel supplies would stretch much further and a self-sustaining community of the small makes only a tiny impact on a polluted planet.
Think of the shrinkage in plastic use. As long as you don’t become a plaything for a normal-sized cat, it is inspired.
Years pass and the idea takes off commercially. Mild-mannered occupational therapist Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to join America’s number one micro-community Leisureland.
If nothing else, it will save them an absolute fortune, making the American Dream much more affordable. In Payne’s gentle, mocking film, an altruistic urge to save the planet is not quite incentive enough.
Downsizing generates some modest chuckles at a world in which little and large communities strive to live in perfect harmony. There are big issues to confront such as whether little people deserve a full vote.
However, the film gets bogged down in the fate of Paul as he suffers doubts, loneliness and a real sense of anxiety. Has he done the right thing? Will he ever find true happiness?
Damon is a solid, dependable presence as the bumbling, doughy Paul. He makes the character an endearingly flawed, ordinary man trying to find some way to connect with all the joys and sorrows, small pleasures and big emotions of human life.
His discontent becomes the starting point of an epic journey, encouraged by self-satisfied, hedonistic upstairs neighbour Dusan, played in a slightly mannered, overly familiar manner by Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz.
Paul also finds himself inspired by industrious Vietnamese activist Ngoc Lan, infused with real energy and fizz by Hong Chau who doesn’t just steal individual scenes but runs away with the entire film.
Paul’s personal journey provides the backbone of a long, cluttered story that tries to pack too much in and starts to feel as if it is drifting along on unpredictable tides and hoping to carry you with it.
You admire the ambitious storytelling and the craftsmanship of its execution.
The central idea never seems ridiculous and the special effects are never intrusive. The whole film is filled with clever ideas, whimsical distractions and poker-faced comic moments.
However, it never quite gels into a convincing whole.

No matter what Matt Damon does in the movies, you can’t actually shrink yourself down to 5 inches.
The producers of the new film “Downsizing” admit they had to ignore a lot of science to tell the story of a future where people elect to get much smaller in order to live large. The movement starts when a Norwegian scientist discovers a novel way to miniaturize people, in a move he hopes will save humanity by reducing the amount of waste and pollution humans produce. And the little life is cheaper, too.
In the film’s downsized world, a “conflict free” diamond ring and necklace set costs just $ 83, which is about twice the amount a “small” family spends on groceries each month. And the steakhouse chain Tony Roma’s has also been shrunk and imported to the land of the small.
Screenwriter Jim Taylor bluntly put the kibosh on anyone’s dreams of living in a cheap, small world like this after a screening of his movie at the Museum of the Moving Image.
“It’s never going to happen,” Taylor said.
In the movie, Matt Damon’s character works at a call center, but in reality his tiny voice would be way too high-pitched to answer calls from the world of normal-sized folks. Plus, at roughly the height of an iPhone 6, he’d likely be small enough to get swept away by a strong gust of wind. And the mini humans in the movie mostly ignore the huge risk that the protective net around their colony could rupture, allowing a runaway cat or a street rat to gobble them up.
But NYU bioethicist S Matthew Liao, who joined Taylor for the post-screening discussion, has highlighted some very real ways that shrinking people down — though to levels much less drastic than in the film — could help mitigate the effects of climate change.
In a 2012 paper in the journal Ethics, Policy & Environment, Liao spelled out a few of his ideas, which he said could be less risky than other last-resort options like geoengineering.
One idea Liao pushed for is to shrink people back down to the 15-centimeter-shorter heights of humans like Albert Einstein who lived 100 years ago.
“It turns out that 15 centimeters of reduction in height translates to around 23% mass reduction for men and 25% mass reduction for women,” Liao said during the talk. He believes that’s “enough to offset the effects of climate change.”
Technology that could hypothetically make this shrinking process possible is already in use in fertility clinics. It’s called “preimplantation genetic diagnosis” and it allows future parents to screen out embryos that have genetic diseases. With around 500 genes coding for height, Liao says, “that’s a way you can actually select embryos for size.”
Of course, it doesn’t take much mental leap to realize some of the ethical problems that selecting embryos for size, among other traits, would quickly create.
Another possible way to shrink people would be to give them extra estrogen. This technique has been used in kids with profound developmental disabilities to keep them small enough for their parents to continue taking care of them as they grow up.
While such ideas might seem draconian, Liao said there’s no denying the effects that taller people have on the planet.
“It takes more energy to transport a larger person than a smaller person,” he said, adding that making humans smaller could also come in pretty handy if we decide to colonize Mars.
“To get off the planet, size is going to matter a huge deal,” Liao said. “Just think, per person, how much resources you need to sustain people in space.”
Many of us would probably never opt to give up our 21st-century height boost, no matter how warm the planet gets. But it does seem like the change could offer more benefits than we realize.

Alexander Payne, the director of Election, The Descendants, and Nebraska, is doing something totally different for his newest movie. Downsizing – a film that features Matt Damon as a character who shrinks down to be only five inches tall – has the most fantastical premise he’s dealt with yet, but a brand new trailer for the movie has shifted my perspective in a big way about what exactly is in store for us when the film arrives this holiday season.
Previous trailers made this seem like Damon and Kristen Wiig’s characters were making this decision together and experiencing this whole new world as a couple. But this trailer reveals that the pair split up after their monumental decision to shrink, and paints the back half of the film as a self-discovery story for Damon in the vein of something like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
The film has earned largely mixed and negative reviews after its debut on the film festival circuit earlier this year, but /Film actually has one of the few rave reviews out there. In his review from the Toronto International Film Festival, our own Marshall Shaffer says:
No matter the narrative hiccups, the issues raised are fascinating to ponder because Payne and [co-writer Jim] Taylor take the time to consider them fully. The capacity to shrink humans for population control is a far-fetched sci-fi concept, but the stretching of our planet beyond its capabilities has already begun. Downsizing dares to ask if humans will be ready to make the sacrifices necessary for the survival and preservation of the species is on the line. Payne and Taylor can pose the question without inducing complete debilitation because it’s one they ask with genuine concern and empathy for their fellow earthlings.
The vibe change between the trailers may be a response to the festival reviews, and the studio seems like they’re trying to course correct and give audiences more accurate expectations for what they’re in for here, which is probably a wise move. Even if this turns out to be a mess, it looks like a fascinating one.
Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.
Downsizing arrives in theaters on December 22, 2017.

Downsized turbocharged engines have become a cornerstone in the car industry’s effort to increase fuel economy. And as CAFE standards push us toward a 54.5-mpg fleet average, engines are bound to get even smaller and turbo boost even higher. Such radically downsized engines can be strong at full throttle but tend to be sluggish from a stop.
–
Automakers are exploring plenty of solutions to this problem, including staged turbos, variable-geometry turbines, and electrically driven compressors. Jim Clarke has a more radical idea. Thus far, it’s all theory—no prototype has been built or tested—but it’s a theory with 27 claims covered by a patent and with a weighty résumé behind it. Over the course of a long career at Ford, Clarke was responsible for the modular V-8 and the Duratec V-6, including the Yamaha-built V-8 and Aston Martin V-12 variants. He was also engineering vice president at Navistar, the heavy-truck manufacturer that owns International Trucks, and he headed up special projects for Kohler Engines. His technical partner, Dick Fotsch, is a past president of engine divisions at Navistar and Kohler. Combined, the two have some 60 years of executive-level engineering and management experience. (Full disclosure: Clarke was this author’s manager decades ago at Ford.)
–

–
The first element of the design, which they call “synergistic induction and turbocharging,” is to place individual throttles—two per cylinder, one for each intake port—right next to the cylinder head. “Between the throttle and the intake valves, the typical engine has an intake-manifold volume roughly equivalent to the engine displacement,” Clarke says. “That takes time to fill when you open the throttle.” His configuration allows the cylinders to fill much more quickly, rapidly generating full torque and a maximum dose of high-energy exhaust gas. Exploiting that exhaust is the next key idea.
–
“The closer you put a turbocharger to the exhaust valve, the more energy reaches the turbine to accelerate it,” explains Clarke. Therefore, the synergistic engine has an individual turbo for each cylinder placed as close as possible to the exhaust valves. These turbos can be smaller than they’d be on a single-turbo engine—20 percent smaller in size (50 percent less flow) on a three-cylinder. Smaller turbos mean less rotational inertia, allowing these tiny blowers to spool up more quickly than most current setups. Clarke estimates that his synergistic engine concept could eliminate perceptible turbo lag altogether.
–
–
–
–
–
The theory seems promising, but the system requires considerable parts multiplication. On the three-cylinder example, there would be three turbos and six throttles, instead of one each, as well as additional plumbing to interconnect the individual intake and exhaust passages. Three small turbos, of course, might only cost 50 percent more than one large one, and few of the other components are particularly complex or exotic. The question is how well the concept’s performance and cost compare with other lag-mitigating techniques—which are not inexpensive, either. But innovation is rarely cheap.
–
–
–
Clarke clearly recalls the instant response of a BMW M6 he drove in the 1980s. He attributes that characteristic to its engine having an individual throttle for each cylinder, an arrangement that reduced the amount of air between the throttle and the intake valve. This engine concept takes that premise a step further.

Life looks different at five inches tall.
As the quirky comedy starring Matt Damon gears up for a wide release after its successful festival circuit, Paramount has released another look at life on the small side for the characters in Alexander Payne‘s Downsizing.
Paramount touts this clip as “an exclusive look,” but it’s more like another miniature (heh) trailer with some new footage of Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig‘s new home, Leisure Land, after they have undergone the “permanent, irreversible” procedure that shrinks them to the side of a box of crackers. Fittingly, crackers are the first thing that Damon’s character Paul tries after his surgery, awed by the large size of the snack.
Paul and his wife Audrey (Wiig) learn that their $ 100,000 in the real world translates to $ 12 million in Leisure Land, allowing them to live in life of luxury in their new, smaller town — but one that houses three Cheesecake Factories! Something’s amiss though, as the on-the-nose trailer song of Talking Head’s “Once in a Lifetime” plays in the background. But darned if this new teaser will tell you what that is.
Downsizing, directed by Sideways and The Descendents director Alexander Payne, premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this summer to fairly positive buzz, with many calling it a “witty” high-concept comedy held up by a stellar cast. /Film’s Marshall Shaffer’s review of Downsizing from the Toronto International Film Festival called it an exercise in sincerity, saying:
“Downsizing dares to ask if humans will be ready to make the sacrifices necessary for the survival and preservation of the species is on the line. Payne and Taylor can pose the question without inducing complete debilitation because it’s one they ask with genuine concern and empathy for their fellow earthlings.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Downsizing, which also stars Christoph Waltz, Jason Sudeikis, Neil Patrick Harris, Hong Chau, Laura Dern, and Nancy Niesh:
When scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall as a solution to overpopulation, Paul (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.
Downsizing is set to hit theaters on December 22, 2017.

Alexander Payne built a reputation as one of the sharpest wits and most brutal ironists in independent cinema, even to the point where the internet conversation around his last film even encompassed the question of whether he was mean to his characters – as if they were people. For his biggest, most expensive undertaking, he tries on something a little different: sincerity. That sensibility reared its head periodically in The Descendants and Nebraska, but it never reaches the default level the way it does in Downsizing.
His latest script with frequent writing partner Jim Taylor uses the instrument of satire to probe a lingering disaster first identified by 18th century British economist Thomas Malthus: overpopulation. Malthus predicted an increasing decline in society’s standard of living due to the scarcity of resources available on earth. Downsizing begins with two scientists announcing a remedy they believe can cure the problem in a presentation called “Human Scale and Sustainability.” Over the course of 200-300 years, they will transition humans to a vastly shrunken size, reducing their waste by decreasing their size thousands fold.
From there, the film fast forwards to a decade down the line when their radical idea catches the tiniest of footholds. Downsizing sounds appealing to Paul Safranek, a protagonist cut in the mold of a Frank Capra hero. It helps that he’s played by Matt Damon, who brings a dignity to the character recalling Jimmy Stewart. Paul is a classic Middle American paradigm of basic decency: an occupational therapist committed to helping relieve the aches of Omaha Steaks’ workers, he’s the kind of guy who considers caring for his ailing mother and pleasing his listless wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) the highest honor.
After conversations with two shrunken high school classmates at their reunion, Paul and Audrey decide to make the big leap to downsize. They attend a sales pitch at Leisureland, a model community promoting itself as a middle-class utopia. Since dollars go further on a smaller scale, the average American worker can translate a modest savings account into enough money for a McMansion and nonstop leisure time. While downsizing came about as a solution to global and environmental issues, the decision quickly shifts to one existing at an odd nexus of selfishness and selflessness.
Payne and Taylor explore their high concept fully, from the practical concerns (how teeth work) to the political considerations (who will provide service work) even down to the way “short” becomes a microaggression. What they never quite figure out, however, is where to take the big idea. The duo has no clue what kind of drama to stage in the world they envision, although they have mercy on audiences by sparing them another dissolution into dystopia. Exploring the nuances of their creation makes for an hour of good cinema, particularly when probing the way Leisureland functions as an anesthetized consumerist paradise without going full Stepford Wives.
The film expands its frame with the introduction of Hong Chau’s Vietnamese dissident Ngoc Lan, an activist who gets shrunk not as liberation but rather as a form of government oppression. She works as a cleaner in Paul’s building and eventually introduces him to a world beyond the Leisureland walls, one where a group of working-class downsized individuals still live in relative squalor. Ngoc forces Paul to confront his notions about where his efforts to help humanity are best suited, a worthy question to consider – but one that also feels better suited for a different film.
No matter the narrative hiccups, the issues raised are fascinating to ponder because Payne and Taylor take the time to consider them fully.

Here’s the first trailer for Downsizing, directed by indie mastermind Alexander Payne (Election, The Descendants).
I love burning apocalypses as much as the next person, but sometimes the explodey blockbuster formula makes you forget how mind-bending and screwed up science fiction can really be. That’s why Alexander Payne’s new flick Downsizing, about people trying to save money by shrinking themselves, is a welcome respite from the usual.
Payne has won Oscars twice for his screenplays—first for Sideways and then The Descendants—and Downsizing will be his first foray into science fiction. His movies have always been oddball stories tinged with a bit of the surreal, usually focusing on regular guys who get in way over their heads in outlandish situations.
That’s definitely the pattern in Downsizing, in which Matt Damon puts on his best friendly dork persona as Paul (it fits him nicely). He’s married to Audrey (Kristen Wiig), and they both appear to be struggling with the stress of their jobs and making ends meet. That’s when they find out about a bizarre new technology, developed by scientists in Norway, that can permanently shrink people down to the size of Barbie dolls. The idea is to live more sustainably on the planet, but it also turns out that everything is cheaper when you shrink. In the trailer, we see Paul and Audrey meeting with some kind of financial adviser, who explains that their savings will be worth millions in the downsized community.
