Israel will not cease operations in Syria, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced just before the Russian military published a detailed chronology of the downing of its Il-20, for which Moscow says Tel Aviv is to blame.

In the run-up to the publication of the Russian Defense Ministry report, Lieberman told local Kan Bet radio that he is not eager to engage in a media debate with Moscow over the incident. However, he was quick to reiterate that Syrian government forces were responsible for the incident. 

The top Israeli military official stated that “nothing” has or will change in Tel Aviv’s approach to the Arab Republic, which it considers to be turning into Iran’s “base” for anti-Israeli operations.

The Russian defense ministry published a minute-by-minute account of the Il-20 downing, stressing that the blame for the crash “lies entirely with the Israeli Air Force.” The plane was on a reconnaissance mission over the Idlib de-escalation zone on Monday when it was shot down by Syrian air defense units responding to an Israeli air raid. Russia insists that Israel left the aircraft almost no time to leave the area before the strike.

Tel Aviv has denied the accusations, shifting all blame for the incident on Damascus. Shortly after the downing of the aircraft, a team of Israeli military officials, including its air force chief, rushed to present Russia with their own version of how events had unfolded. There has been no immediate comment from Israel in response to the Russian MoD report.

“When people are dying – especially under such circumstances – it is always a tragedy,” President Putin said during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Moscow on Tuesday.

Responding to a reporter’s question as to whether the incident in Latakia could be compared to the downing of the Russian Su-24 by Turkey in 2015, Putin said the two situations were “different.”

Ankara “deliberately downed” the Russian jet, he explained, while the Il-20 incident “looks like a chain of tragic circumstances, because the Israeli plane didn’t shoot down our jet.”

Russia will investigate the incident, Putin said, adding that Moscow will boost security of Russian troops in Syria following the incident.

Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told TASS that the president is likely to hold phone talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later on Tuesday.

  • Russia’s defense ministry claims it has new evidence that the missile that downed Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) in 2014 was fired by Ukrainian forces. 
  • The Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur flight was shot down by a Soviet-made missile over the rebel-held eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people on board.
  • In May, international investigators concluded that a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile supplied by Russian separatists in Kursk were responsible for the crash.
  • But Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement, and its defense ministry claimed it had “newly discovered evidence” which it says discredits previous findings and pins the attack on Ukraine.

On Sunday, the Israelis confirmed that the F-16 was taken down by the Soviet-built S-200 surface-to-air (SAM) missile system, known to NATO as the SA-5.
Following the incident, in which both pilots of the Israeli aircraft survived, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) launched its own investigation into the causes of the crash. After analyzing the chronological order of events during the Israeli strikes and the Syrian response to it, the internal review of the Israeli experts determined that a pilot mistake was responsible for the F-16 takedown.

“On the balance of completing the mission versus defending themselves… the aircrew failed to adequately defend itself. Its actions did not match the needed order of priorities to address the missile threat it faced,” the report said, according to Haaretz. Furthermore, Israeli pilots were well aware that they would be exposed to enemy fire during their mission to destroy the Iranian drone command and control center.

“In the operational theatre, there were a number of planes that did indeed defend themselves against the Syrian launchings while completing their mission. One of the planes that did not defend itself, was hit,” a senior Israel Air Force officer told reporters, commenting on the conclusion of the probe, Reuters reports.

At the same time, the IAF said that the pilots did the right thing by ejecting from the plane, calling it a decision that saved their lives. The conclusion of the probe, made public on Sunday, revealed that the crew possessed the adequate intelligence to complete the mission. It also added that the F-16’s warning systems had behaved properly at the time of the incident.

Israel remains undeterred by the takedown of its F-16, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared following the incident, using the events of February 10 to issue new threats against Iran, whose forces are involved in the Syrian conflict at Damascus’ invitation.

The Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah said the alleged downing of Israeli F-16 jet by Syrian forces marks “a new strategic phase” that puts an end to the violation of Syria’s sovereignty. “Today’s developments mean the old equations have categorically ended,” the group said on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Syrian officials reported that the country’s air defense systems shot down the Israeli jet targeting a local army base. The royal couple were greeted by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield who spoke to the Duchess of Cornwall and the Prince of Wales for a special edition of the ITV show. 

Charles and Camilla first met ITV CEO Carolyn McCall and Chairman Peter Bazalgette before making their way to This Morning, to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary in October this year.  

All the ITV favourites were on hand to welcome their Royal Highnesses, with Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan, Lorraine Kelly and Loose Women stars Andrea McLean and Gloria Hunniford swapping studios for the special occasion. 

Holly and Phillip then introduced the royals to Friday presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, who was congratulated by Camilla for her stint on Strictly Come Dancing. 

“As a patron to charities headed by both The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, I’m really thrilled to welcome them to the This Morning studio. It’s a fantastic way for us to celebrate our 30th anniversary,” Phillip enthused. 

Holly beamed: “It’s been wonderful to welcome Their Royal Highnesses to This Morning. It’s an exciting year for us here, and it’s lovely to share with them some of our highlights.”

Editor Martin Frizell explained: “We also asked them to sign our first ever Visitors’ Book, which is going to be filled with pictures and messages from all our guests as we enter our 30th year. 

“We’re going to take photos on a polaroid camera and give the book away to one lucky winner to mark the show’s 30th birthday in October.”

Carolyn McCall, ITV Chief Executive, said: “We were really pleased to host Their Royal Highnesses at ITV as part of the Royal Television Society’s 90th birthday celebrations.  

 “ITV is very much at the heart of popular culture in the UK and we were delighted that The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall were able to get a glimpse behind the scenes at one of the cornerstones of our schedule – the award winning This Morning.  

“Their Royal Highnesses also met many members of the cast and crew of our other brilliant Daytime programmes, together with the apprentices that we have working right across the business.”

The list came just moments after Holly and Phillip were live on air downing shots of rum for a special tasting session. 

Holly grumbled: “This was a bad idea,” before comically gasping: “I love you!”

“Don’t do it,” Phillip grinned.

Wozniacki, 27, has battled it out at the top of the sport for 13 years since turning professional in 2005.

And now finally her wait for a Grand Slam win is over after she fought to a 7-6 3-6 6-4 win in close to three hours against Halep.

Halep had her blood pressure checked on court in the second set with the host broadcaster in Australia suggesting she had ‘breathing problems’.

But that didn’t stop the plucky Romanian roaring back off the canvas to take the match into a decider.

Wozniacki broke early in the second set but suffered her own problems with a knee problem meaning she had to take a medical timeout.

By that stage Halep was 4-3 up with the serve – the first time she led all match – but Wozniacki couldn’t be kept down and she reeled off three games in a row to take the match, and the title.

Speaking on court with tears in her eyes, Wozniacki said: “”I’m sorry, I’m just taking a second here to hug Daphne [the Daphne Akhurst trophy]. I’ve dreamt of this for so many years

“I never cry and my voice is shaking but it’s a very emotional moment.

“I want to thank everyone at the tournament for making it happen and the ball boys, kids, linesmen and volunteers.

“You make this such a great tournament and everyone can’t wait to come back. Thank you.

“I want to congratulate Simona. I know today is a tough day and I’m sorry I had to win.

“I’m sure we’ll have many matches in the future. It was an incredible match and again, yes. I’m sorry.

“Last but not least I want to thank my team and my dad.

“You’ve coached me from the start when I was seven and we’ve had our ups and downs and you’ve been by my side every step of the way, so thank you.

“I want to thank my fiancee who is here tonight. Without your support, I was a nervous wreck this morning but you managed to calm me down and help me enjoy this moment.

“Thank you so much for being here and having that special moment with me.”

Beaten finalist Halep paid tribute to Wozniacki and said: “It’s not easy to talk now but I want to congratulate Caroline, she played amazing. Congratulations to all your team. It’s unbelievable and congrats for the future.

“It’s been a great tournament for me. I started with an ankle injury and I just wanted to give my best, which I did.

“I’m sad I didn’t win today but Caroline was better than me. I will fight and hopefully will have another challenge like I had today.”

  • Ukraine’s SBU security service arrested an alleged Russian asset this week.
  • He has been named in Ukrainian and UK media as Stanislav Yezhov.
  • Yezhov was recorded visiting 10 Downing Street this summer.

Video footage shows an alleged Russian spy following Theresa May into 10 Downing Street during an official diplomatic visit this summer.

Stanislav Yezhov can be seen walking behind the prime minister in July, while accompanying his boss, Ukrainian prime minister Volodymyr Groysman.

At the time, Groysman and the British government both had no reason to think Yezhov was anything but a regular aide working for the Ukrainian government.

But he has since been accused of being a Russian intelligence asset, who used his access to the highest echelons of the Ukrainian government to feed state secrets to his handlers.

Footage published by MailOnline shows him walking behind Groysman and May at a meeting in July. He pauses while the two pose for photographs on the steps of 10 Downing Street, then follows them both inside:

MailOnline also published footage of Yezhov arriving at a meeting at Lancaster House in London, followed shortly afterwards by Boris Johnson, the foreign secretary.

Photographs circulated on social media have also shown Yezhov with US Senator John McCain, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and European Council president Donald Tusk.

Yezhov has been named in Ukrainian and British media as the man arrested earlier this week by the SBU, Ukraine’s security service.

In a press release, the SBU did not mention Yezhov by name but gave a description consistent with his work.

A government adviser, cited by the Kyiv Post, said Yezhov had been a Russian asset for “at least two years”, and that he had been turned while posted to Ukraine’s embassy in Washington D.C.

Outlining Yezhov’s alleged activity, the SBU claimed that he “collected information about the activities of government structures with the help of special equipment.” It did not specify what the equipment was.

Speaking on a visit to Poland on Thursday, Theresa May said she was “aware” of the case, but that it was a matter for the authorities in Ukraine.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Security at Number 10 is kept under constant review.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May was set to be the central target of a planned terrorism attack on Downing Street, a court has heard.

Naa’imur Rahman, from north London, has been charged with preparing to commit acts of terrorism after allegedly plotting to kill the prime minister. Details emerged in court on Wednesday, outlining how Rahman was preparing to detonate explosives to get into the PM’s office.

Prosecutor Mark Carroll told the court that Rahman’s plot would have begun at the gates of Downing Street, where explosives would be detonated to cause chaos in one direction, while May was hunted down during the distraction.

“The secondary attack was to be carried out with a suicide vest, pepper spray and a knife,” he told the court.

“His purpose was to attack, kill and cause explosions.”

Rahman, 20, was carrying two inert explosive devices when he was arrested last week.

The defendant appeared in court with a co-defendant, 21-year-old Mohammed Imran, from Birmingham, who is also charged with preparing to commit acts of terrorism.

The pair have allegedly been linked with the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) militant group in Libya. No plea was indicated by either man and there was no application for bail.

Rahman and Imran will next appear in the Old Bailey court on December 20. A Downing Street spokesman declined to comment on the case.
