AMD has come a long way since 2002, but the Linux kernel still treats modern Threadrippers like Athlon-era systems—at least in one potentially lag-inducing respect.

AMD engineer Prateek Nayak recently submitted a patch to Linux’s processor idle drivers that would “skip dummy wait for processors based on the Zen microarchitecture.” When ACPI support was added to the Linux kernel in 2002—written by Andy Grover, committed by Linus Torvalds—it included a “dummy wait op.” The system essentially read data with no purpose other than delaying the next instruction until the CPU could fully stop with the STPCLK# command. This allowed for some power saving and compatibility during the early days of ACPI implementation when some chipsets wouldn’t move to an idle state when one would expect it.

But today’s Zen-based AMD chips don’t need this workaround, and, as Nayak writes, it’s hurting them, at least in specific workloads on Linux. Testing with instruction-based sampling (IBS) workloads shows that “a significant amount of time is spent in the dummy op, which incorrectly gets accounted as C-State residency.” The CPU, seeing all this low-effort dummy work, can push into deeper, slower C-State, which then makes the CPU take longer to “wake up,” especially on jobs that require lots of switching between busy and idle states.

Some users of Nvidia’s GeForce graphics cards are noticing severe performance issues after installing the Windows 11 2022 Update (aka Windows 11 22H2) that Microsoft released to the public earlier this week. As reported by Bleeping Computer, affected users have experience stuttering, inconsistent framerates, and slowdowns, even on fast PCs with modern components.

Nvidia says the problem is caused by some new Windows graphics debugging features that are enabled by mistake.

The company publicly acknowledged the issue and released a new beta version of the GeForce Experience software package that it says should fix it. This implies that the problem is with Nvidia’s add-on software rather than the GeForce drivers themselves; if you installed the drivers without the GeForce Experience software, you may not have noticed the slowdown in the first place.

Larry Page’s Kitty Hawk air taxi startup is shutting down https://briefnews.eu/larry-pages-kitty-hawk-air-taxi-startup-is-shutting-down/ https://briefnews.eu/larry-pages-kitty-hawk-air-taxi-startup-is-shutting-down/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 22:11:34 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/larry-pages-kitty-hawk-air-taxi-startup-is-shutting-down/ After more than a decade of trying to make flying cars a reality, Kitty Hawk is shutting down. “We’re still working on the details of what’s next,” the Larry Page-backed startup posted to LinkedIn on Wednesday afternoon. Before today’s announcement, the last time we heard from Kitty Hawk was in the spring of 2021 when it came out the company had parted ways with engineer Damon Vander Lind following “months” of infighting with Page and CEO Sebastian Thrun. Almost exactly a year earlier, the company canceled its original Flyer project and laid off most of the 70-person team that had worked on the aircraft.

It’s unclear why Kitty Hawk decided to call it quits, but comments Thrun made after the company ended development on Flyer may provide a clue. “No matter how hard we looked, we could not find a path to a viable business,” the chief executive said at the time. After Vander Lind’s departure the following year, it appeared Kitty Hawk was ready to double down on its Heavyside vertical take-off and landing aircraft. It acquired 3D Robotics and brought on the company’s co-founder, former Wired editor Chris Anderson, as chief operating officer.

Despite the demise of Kitty Hawk, this probably isn’t the last we’ll hear of Larry Page’s flying car ambitions. According to CNBC, Wednesday’s shutdown won’t affect Wisk Aero, the company that was borne out of a 2019 partnership between Kitty Hawk and Boeing.

“Kitty Hawk’s decision to cease operations does not change Boeing’s commitment to Wisk. We are proud to be a founding member of Wisk Aero and are excited to see the work they are doing to drive innovation and sustainability through the future of electric air travel,” Boeing told the outlet. “We do not expect Kitty Hawk’s announcement to affect Wisk’s operations or other activities in any way.”

Race winner Sebastian Vettel of Germany and Ferrari and second placed Charles Leclerc of Monaco and Ferrari celebrate with their team during the F1 Grand Prix of Singapore at Marina Bay Street Circuit on September 22, 2019 in Singapore.

  • The 2022 F1 Singapore Grand Prix is taking place from September 30 to October 2.
  • It's the biggest party weekend of the year in Singapore.
  • A three-day luxury ticket package to catch the race costs $ 9,898 Singapore dollars, or $ 7,036.

The F1 Singapore Grand Prix is back after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and the city is gearing up for its biggest weekend — think parties, fast cars, and global music acts converging all in one spot.

Home to the first Grand Prix night race, the country shuts down public roads in the city center and transforms them into a brightly lit track known as the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Around 268,000 fans attended the 2019 F1 Singapore Grand Prix — the second-highest on record since the 2008 inaugural race, race organizer Singapore GP told local news outlet The Straits Times. This year's race, held from September 30 to October 2, is expected to draw a similar turnout, Singapore GP told local news outlet Today.

Those without tickets can catch the action on two of the country's major pay-TV broadcasters. It's a big, celebratory event — even non-F1 fans will head out to the clubs for a slice of the action.

Want in? Get ready to pay up. Here's how much it'll cost you to party big during F1 weekend in Singapore.

Public roads in the city center are shut down and transformed into the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Race tickets: S$ 98 – S$ 9,898

Prices for single-day general admission tickets vary across the weekend.

Ticket prices start at 98 Singapore dollars, or $ 70, for the practice race on Friday and go as high as S$ 988 for the race on Sunday. Three-day tickets will set you back as much as S$ 1,288.

There are also three-day hospitality packages, which include free-flow drinks and access to viewing galleries for prices ranging from S$ 1,605 to S$ 9,898.

The S$ 9,898 package — the Formula 1 Paddock Club — lets attendees watch the race from an air-conditioned suite above the pit garages. They also get access to walk down the pit lane and check out the cars and the race crew.

Concert tickets: Only for those who hold race tickets

The F1 concert lineup this year includes Westlife, Green Day, and Marshmello. To catch the concert, you'll need to have tickets to the race first.

Prices for top hotels: Upwards of S$ 1,700 a night

The Marina Bay Street Circuit is surrounded by some of the largest hotels in the city.

But, as of September 16, rooms in Pan Pacific Singapore, the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, and the Fullerton Hotel Singapore were completely sold out from September 30 to October 3.

A representative for the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore told Insider that room prices during the F1 weekend were around S$ 1,700 to S$ 2,000 per night. In contrast, rooms on a non-F1 weekend at the Ritz start from S$ 650 a night, per the hotel's website.

There are still rooms available at Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay hotel, where the Singapore Night Race (Track View) package costs S$ 2,500 per night. A representative for the company told Insider a minimum stay of three nights is required during that period.

Hotel room rates in Singapore are almost reaching a 10-year high, based on data from the Singapore Tourism Board. In July, the average room cost was S$ 259 — the highest since prices peaked at S$ 261.66 a decade ago in September 2012.

Big-name parties: Upwards of S$ 80

Of course, the party doesn't end when the race ends.

Amber Lounge is one of Singapore's biggest F1 after-parties, which is also held in Monaco and Abu Dhabi. This year's party will be held at The Fullerton Bay Hotel and touts "immersive theatrical cabaret," "cirque-themed performances," and lots of Champagne.

Entry passes for the party cost between S$ 800 and S$ 1,200. Groups of 10 who are looking to party in a VIP suite and have S$ 45,000 to burn can buy a package that includes vodka, caviar, and yes, Champagne.

Marquee Singapore, a nightclub at the Marina Bay Sands, or MBS, is celebrating race weekend with DJ Steve Aoki on September 30 and Afrojack on October 1. General admission tickets start from S$ 80, while express entry tickets start from S$ 250.

There's also the Mandala Weekender party happening at the MBS convention center for all three nights of the race weekend. The party costs upwards of S$ 148 a head and and features artists such as Kelis, Rae Sremmurd, and Rudimental.

Special F1-related food deals: Upwards of S$ 200

Restaurants around the city are catching F1 fever, too.

Perched 57 stories above the ground, right at the top of the iconic MBS, is Cé La Vi Singapore. The rooftop restaurant opens up to views of the city-state on one side and the open sea on the other. It has a four-course F1 set menu: For S$ 300, you can feast on dishes like Boston lobster and Japanese king crab.

LAVO, an Italian restaurant also on the MBS rooftop, is holding a Race Weekend Party Brunch. For S$ 248, diners get to enjoy their food with free-flow drinks while Swiss DJ Gil Glaze spins his beats.

Alternatively, diners can indulge in some French food over at La Brasserie's Winning Formula Brunch, which costs S$ 238 with free-flow Champagne and house wines.

Trump accused Biden of scheming to keep gas prices down but they’ve been in steady decline for months: ‘Right after the election it’s going to double’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-accused-biden-of-scheming-to-keep-gas-prices-down-but-theyve-been-in-steady-decline-for-months-right-after-the-election-its-going-to-double/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-accused-biden-of-scheming-to-keep-gas-prices-down-but-theyve-been-in-steady-decline-for-months-right-after-the-election-its-going-to-double/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 07:43:27 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/trump-accused-biden-of-scheming-to-keep-gas-prices-down-but-theyve-been-in-steady-decline-for-months-right-after-the-election-its-going-to-double/ Former President Donald Trump takes the stage at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022.
Former President Donald Trump takes the stage at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022.

  • Former President Donald Trump slammed President Joe Biden for lowering gas prices.
  • Trump claimed the decrease was a politically motivated scheme.
  • "Right after the election, it's going to double up and go higher than anybody ever believed," Trump claimed.

Former President Donald Trump, while in Ohio to rally support for Republican Senate candidate JD Vance, slammed President Joe Biden for the recent decline in national gas prices.

Speaking at the 7,000-seat Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Trump — who himself schemed in an effort to overturn the 2020 election — claimed that shrinking gas prices are a ploy Biden is using for political gain.

In a tweet, the White House recognized Saturday as the 95th day in which gas prices have steadily declined since reaching record highs earlier this year. According to the White House, the national average for a gallon of gas sits at $ 3.68.

The administration — and Biden himself — have claimed that the drop in prices is the steepest decline in more than a decade. Insider was unable to independently verify the claim.

Trump slammed Biden for going into the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve to release crude in an effort to ease overpriced gas despite the reserve being "only for war." But Trump did the same during his administration when Saudi Arabia's crude production drastically decreased following attacks on its production facilities, per CNBC.

"He's using that to keep prices down as much as he can just before the election and right after the election, it's going to double up and go higher than anybody ever believed," Trump claimed at the rally on Saturday.

Trump claimed the current average is still "double and triple" what it was during his administration.

The Associated Press reported the national average was as low as $ 1.87 per gallon during May 2020, but the outlet attributed the low cost mostly to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

While the crowd cheered during Trump's rant on the current status of gas prices, some supporters didn't seem too bothered.

When an interviewer from Right Side Broadcasting Network pushed a woman clad in a pro-Trump hat to say the gas prices for her 5.5-hour drive were bad, the woman didn't agree.

"Wasn't too bad," the supporter said of the gas prices.

A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Student loan startup CommonBond is quietly winding down operations after the pandemic’s interest and payment pause massively hit its core business https://briefnews.eu/student-loan-startup-commonbond-is-quietly-winding-down-operations-after-the-pandemics-interest-and-payment-pause-massively-hit-its-core-business/ https://briefnews.eu/student-loan-startup-commonbond-is-quietly-winding-down-operations-after-the-pandemics-interest-and-payment-pause-massively-hit-its-core-business/#respond Wed, 14 Sep 2022 20:13:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/student-loan-startup-commonbond-is-quietly-winding-down-operations-after-the-pandemics-interest-and-payment-pause-massively-hit-its-core-business/ CommonBond CEO David Klein
CommonBond cofounder and CEO David Klein.

  • CommonBond's refinancing business took a massive hit amid the pandemic's interest and payment pause.
  • It effectively exited the business in June and pivoted to loans for residential solar panels.
  • The company's CEO David Klein announced the decision in a LinkedIn post.

Student loan lending company CommonBond quietly announced it will be "winding down" its operations after its core businesses saw a hit during the pandemic.

CommonBond cofounder and CEO David Klein said in a LinkedIn post that despite shifting to focus on residential solar panel loans, the impact of the student loan payment pause made it hard to continue the business.

"The story of what has led us to this point starts with Covid," Klein said. "When the pandemic hit, our Student business took a hit. Half of the Refinance market went away as the government paused interest and payments for all federal student holders. More than two years later, that policy is still in place."

CommonBond launched in 2012 to help originate student loans at lower rates and offered refinancing services.

But during the pandemic, the US government paused federal student loan repayments, a move that was extended until President Joe Biden approved a plan to cancel up to $ 20,000 in student loans in early September.

In June this year, CommonBond officially announced it would formally expand into lending for people who want to buy and install solar panels on their homes. It began offering loans for solar panels in the third quarter of 2021 and, by 2022, was on pace to lend $ 1 billion to customers. At the time, the company said it was a logical step for them as many of its student loan customers buy a house within a few years of refinancing with CommonBond, and there is strong interest in helping curb climate change.

Klein said in his LinkedIn post the solar lending business "is where we were growing quickly," but ultimately, CommonBond's solar financing model was still scaling up and needed to access new capital.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't pivot the entirety of the business fast enough," he said.

CommonBond did not respond to a request for comment.

The first US video game studio to unionize is shutting down https://briefnews.eu/the-first-us-video-game-studio-to-unionize-is-shutting-down/ https://briefnews.eu/the-first-us-video-game-studio-to-unionize-is-shutting-down/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 21:49:43 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-first-us-video-game-studio-to-unionize-is-shutting-down/ The first video game studio in the US to unionize is shutting down. On Wednesday, Beast Breaker developer Vodeo Games announced it had failed to secure funding to produce an additional release beyond its debut title. “Despite a year of avid efforts, we’ve been unable to secure funding for our next project from publishers and investors,” Vodeo Games said in a tweet spotted by Polygon. “As such, we’ve run out of funds and aren’t able to keep the team together — and there simply is no Vodeo without our incredible team.”

Vodeo Games was founded in 2021 by Threes! designer Asher Vollmer. The studio released its first game that same year. According to Vodeo’s website, it had been working on a new project before today’s announcement. The studio will complete work on the Steam version of Beast Breaker before closing shop.

At the end of last year, Vodeo’s all-remote team of 13 successfully unionized with Code-CWA, the Communication Workers of America's Campaign to Organize Digital Employees. Despite the management of Vodeo Games recognizing the studio’s union, the two sides never came to a bargaining agreement. According to Vodeo Workers United, negotiations came to an end when it became apparent the studio could not secure additional funding. The group said it would share what it learned with other industry workers to help them organize their workplaces.

Since workers at Vodeo unionized, employees at other studios have attempted to follow suit. Most notably, there’s the QA division at Activision's Raven Software, which voted in May to form the Game Workers Alliance. More recently, quality assurance staff at Blizzard Albany, formerly Vicarious Visions, filed for a union election.

USB has come a long way since the 12Mbps days of the ’90s. It has waved goodbye to USB-B and is inching away from USB-A in favor of the slim, reversible USB-C connector. Data transfer rates have increased so dramatically that we can run powerful setups with high-resolution monitors, speedy external storage, and numerous other devices from the USB Implementers Forum’s latest open standard, USB4.

USB4 unifies the USB and Intel Thunderbolt protocols for the first time, expanding USB’s capabilities while further dividing the technology into different performance classes. Adding features like dynamic bandwidth allocation ensures that USB4 is by far the most advanced USB generation. While there are PCs, docks, and cables supporting USB4, we’ve yet to see everything the protocol can do, like powering an eGPU without Intel branding.

With all that going on, we thought it would be a great time to put a spotlight on the latest and greatest generation of USB. We’ve whipped up a handy refresher for all things USB4, breaking down the various key aspects of the spec, from how it differs from other specs to protocol tunneling, Alt Mode, and power delivery.

Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky at a press conference on Capitol Hill on May 17, 2022.

  • Republicans are increasingly criticizing their party's controversial, unpopular Senate nominees.
  • Even Mitch McConnell has noted that the Senate may not flip this year, citing "candidate quality."
  • But Scott, the chair of the Senate GOP campaign arm, says that criticism is "treasonous."

Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, the chair of the Senate GOP campaign arm, is fighting back against intraparty criticism of Republican Senate nominees, many of whom are struggling in the polls.

And he's reviving an ongoing rivalry with the leader of his caucus: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who's criticized "candidate quality" in the GOP.

"Sen. McConnell and I clearly have a strategic disagreement here," said Scott in an interview with Politico. "We have great candidates."

Scott also penned an op-ed in the Washington Examiner on Thursday in which he framed ongoing criticism of the party's more controversial nominees — which include Herschel Walker in Georgia, Blake Masters in Arizona, JD Vance in Ohio, and Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania — as a conflict between the "chattering class" in Washington and the party's base voters.

"Many of the very people responsible for losing the Senate last cycle are now trying to stop us from winning the majority this time by trash-talking our Republican candidates," he wrote. "It's an amazing act of cowardice, and ultimately, it's treasonous to the conservative cause."

"Giving anonymous quotes to help the Washington Post or the New York Times write stories trashing Republicans is the same as working with the Democratic National Committee," he also wrote. "If you want to trash-talk our candidates to help the Democrats, pipe down."

But while there have been a myriad of stories for which Republicans have offered anonymous quotes, Republican leaders have also sought to manage expectations in public as well.

"There's probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate," said McConnell at a luncheon in Kentucky last month. "Senate races are just different. They're statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome."

Those words were interpreted as an implicit jab at some of the party's nominees, who have each had their own troubles.

In Arizona, Masters has struggled to win over the state's increasingly-purple electorate and recently began scrubbing hard-right political positions from his website. In Ohio, Vance has come under fire for appearing to suggest that couples in "violent" marriages not get divorced. Walker has struggled in Georgia as he's given perplexing answers to questions from the media, and Oz has struggled to convince Pennsylvania voters of his authenticity, including his ties to the state he's running in.

On Wednesday, the election forecaster Crystal Ball shifted their ratings for the Senate elections in Arizona and Pennsylvania to "leans Democratic," citing "candidate weaknesses for Republicans in both states and what appears to be a not-as-bleak environment for Democrats."

The other subplot at play is Scott's ongoing rivalry with McConnell. Earlier this year, Scott released his own GOP agenda that would include a tax hike for over half of Americans, leading to a public put-down from McConnell in March.
