“It was Russia that supported the request of the Syrian government to the Director General of the Technical Secretariat of the [Organization for the Prohibition of the Chemical Weapons] to send … experts to Douma,” the ministry’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova said, dismissing the media allegations.

“We will not indulge the authors of these fake reports,” Zakharova added, explaining that the Russian side “does its part of the work in a very responsible, professional and reliable manner.” She stressed that it is Russia and Syria that bear the responsibility for the security of the OPCW experts.

Those who still want to accuse the Syrian and Russian authorities of neglecting their duties, by “blocking” the experts from accessing the site of the alleged chemical attack, apparently are willing to risk the OPCW investigators’ lives to promote their “dirty fake news,” Zakharova said.

It was after the strikes launched by the US, the UK and France against Syria, when the most radical militant groups renewed active hostilities against the Syrian Army in the Douma region.

The coalition attack also forced the Syrian authorities and the Russian military to change route plans and once again negotiate with some local groups in Douma to facilitate the safe access of the OPCW investigators to the site of the alleged chemical attack.

Earlier, Moscow said that the strikes were aimed at thwarting the UN chemical watchdog’s investigation. Washington and its allies launched a massive missile strike against Syria on the same day that the team of OPCW experts was expected to arrive in Syria.

On Monday, an array of western mainstream media came out with strikingly similar headlines as they all accused Moscow of “blocking” the OPCW experts from entering Douma. CNN, the Guardian and the New York Times all said that the OPCW experts were either “blocked” or “barred” from the alleged chemical attack site. CBS News came out with a headline reading: “Russia accused of blocking access to alleged chemical attack site” while the Sun wrote that “US accuses Russia of tampering with Syrian poison gas site and [of] blocking inspectors” altogether.

It turned out that British officials were behind this new wave of hysteria. The inspectors “are currently being prevented from doing so by the regime and the Russians,” Prime Minister Theresa May of Britain said in Parliament, the media reported. The British prime minister also accused the Syrian government of “attempting to conceal the evidence” of the attack. She never provided any proof to substantiate her words, though.

The British mission to the OPCW also added fuel to the fire by tweeting that “Russia and Syria have not yet allowed access to Douma.”

In fact, Russia informed the OPCW that “there were still pending security issues to be worked out before any deployment could take place,” Ahmet Uzumcu, the director general of the OPCW technical secretariat, said in a statement on Monday.

The whole media campaign promoting the idea of the OPCW investigation being “blocked” might be aimed at actually discrediting the potential results of the probe, which could prove to be inconsistent with the narrative promoted by the US and its allies, security analyst and former UK Army officer Charles Shoebridge said, in a Twitter post.

In the meantime, the Russian military have found a laboratory operated by militants in central Douma, which the military says was used to produce chemical weapons. The facility was located in a basement of a residential building.

The lab had some sophisticated equipment, including an industrial chemical reactor, which was apparently used by the militants to create toxic agents. The footage, taken by Russian journalists inside the facility, also shows vast stockpiles of various chemicals, some of which were produced in Germany, as well as empty mortar shells that can be filled with poisonous substances.

“While searching the site, the Russian nuclear, chemical and biological-warfare units have found substances that fall under the Convention for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons,” Colonel Aleksandr Rodionov, an officer with the Russian nuclear, chemical and biological-warfare troops, told journalists. He added that chemicals stockpiled in the lab could be particularly used to produce sulfur mustard gas and nitrogen mustard gas.

The Russian military also found a cylinder filled with chlorine, which looks similar to the one that was shown in one of the videos of the alleged chemical attack in Douma and presented as a “chemical bomb dropped from a helicopter.”

The militants were apparently well aware of how to produce chemical agents, as block notes containing formulas and detailed instructions on how to mix the chemicals were also found in the lab. A banner with the logo of the White Helmets was also reportedly found near the entrance to the chemical laboratory.

The locals, including the people who had lived in the house, were sent away by the militants, who cordoned off the building and sometimes even blocked the street where it’s located. The militants also kept their activities secret so that the civilians knew nothing of their work there.

The purported chemical incident in Douma allegedly took place on April 7. A week later, Washington and its allies launched a massive missile strike against Syria, in retaliation to the alleged attack, without even waiting for the OPCW investigation of the incident to begin. Russia denounced the strikes by calling them “hooliganism” in international relations and “an aggression against a sovereign state.”

After visiting Douma, western media begin to question ‘gas attack’ narrative https://briefnews.eu/after-visiting-douma-western-media-begin-to-question-gas-attack-narrative/ https://briefnews.eu/after-visiting-douma-western-media-begin-to-question-gas-attack-narrative/#respond Tue, 17 Apr 2018 19:51:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/after-visiting-douma-western-media-begin-to-question-gas-attack-narrative/ After speaking with eyewitnesses on the ground in Syria, even mainstream media are beginning to cast doubt on the West’s narrative of an alleged gas attack in Douma, as medics tell French, German and UK media it never happened.

Agence France-Presse (AFP), the world’s third largest news agency, and the Independent, a British online newspaper, have each published stories that question whether chlorine or any other chemical was used against Syrians in Eastern Ghouta on April 7.

In a French language video report, AFP spoke with Marwan Jaber, a medical student who witnessed the aftermath of the alleged attack.

“Some of [the victims] suffered from asthma and pulmonary inflammation. They received routine treatment and some were even sent home,” Jaber told AFP. “They showed no symptoms of a chemical attack. But some foreigners entered while we were in a state of chaos and sprinkled people with water, and some of them were even filming it.”

Jaber’s testimony is consistent with claims made by a Douma doctor who spoke with veteran UK journalist Robert Fisk. Although Dr. Assim Rahaibani did not personally witness what happened in the medical clinic, he said that “all the doctors” he works with “know what happened.”

According to Rahaibani, intense shelling had created dust clouds that seeped into the basements and cellars where people lived. “People began to arrive here suffering from hypoxia, oxygen loss. Then someone at the door, a ‘White Helmet’, shouted ‘Gas!’, and a panic began. People started throwing water over each other. Yes, the video was filmed here, it is genuine, but what you see are people suffering from hypoxia – not gas poisoning.”

Writing in the Independent, Fisk noted that locals he spoke with “never believed in” the gas attack stories – and that tales of President Bashar Assad’s chemical atrocities had been spread by armed Islamist groups who had imprisoned and enslaved thousands of people in Ghouta before the town was liberated by Syrian forces in April.

Meanwhile, a report aired by the German RTL Group-owned channel n-tv says it’s unclear whether the attack took place at all, given that most of the locals told them on camera they didn’t smell any chemicals at all, one local told them he remembers a “weird smell” and was fine after a glass of water, and one man, who didn’t want to show his face, insisted there was a “smell of chlorine.”

However, a local doctor told the channel: “Saturday, a week ago, we treated people with breathing problems, but chlorine or gas poisoning – no, those are different symptoms.”

All of these stories published by different outlets corroborate testimony from two men who appeared in the “gas attack” footage spread far and wide by western media and governments. Interviewed by the Russian military, the two men said they were unknowing accomplices in the gas attack ruse. “We were working and did not pay attention to who was filming us,” the first eyewitness said. “They were filming us, and then a man came in and started screaming that this was a chemical attack…People got scared and started spraying each other with water and using inhalers. Doctors told us that there was no chemical poisoning.”

Doctors and medical workers questioned by the Russian Center for Reconciliation confirmed that there had been no reports of patients suffering from chemical poisoning in Douma during the timeframe of the alleged gas attack.

The French and British media reports seem to contradict statements made by Paris and London, which have both stated unequivocally that the chemical attack did take place – and that Assad was responsible.

French President Emmanuel Macron said before Saturday’s missile strike against Syria that he had proof that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used chlorine to attack civilians in a militant-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta.

For her part, British Prime Minister Theresa May insisted that a “significant body of information including intelligence indicates the Syrian Regime is responsible for this latest attack.”

US ‘unworthy’ of permanent UNSC status due to behavior after alleged Douma attack – Russian envoy https://briefnews.eu/us-unworthy-of-permanent-unsc-status-due-to-behavior-after-alleged-douma-attack-russian-envoy/ https://briefnews.eu/us-unworthy-of-permanent-unsc-status-due-to-behavior-after-alleged-douma-attack-russian-envoy/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 15:07:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-unworthy-of-permanent-unsc-status-due-to-behavior-after-alleged-douma-attack-russian-envoy/

Washington’s behavior in light of the situation in Syria and the threats against the country are “not worthy” of a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia’s envoy to UN, Vassily Nebenzia said.

“The irresponsible behavior of the US, trampling on the international law and on the sovereignty of the other countries is unworthy of their status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This status needs the highest degree of responsibility, and not the right to saber rattle, inexistent in the international behavior code,” Nebenzia stated.

'Western intel on Douma incident virtually non-existent, no ground sources' – ex-CIA agent Kiriakou https://briefnews.eu/western-intel-on-douma-incident-virtually-non-existent-no-ground-sources-ex-cia-agent-kiriakou/ https://briefnews.eu/western-intel-on-douma-incident-virtually-non-existent-no-ground-sources-ex-cia-agent-kiriakou/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 02:11:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/western-intel-on-douma-incident-virtually-non-existent-no-ground-sources-ex-cia-agent-kiriakou/ The US and its allies’ allegations of a chemical attack by Syrian government forces near Damascus are based on speculation since the US doesn’t have any intelligence assets on the ground, former CIA analyst John Kiriakou told RT.

“On the ground the intelligence is non-existent, we don’t have an embassy there anymore, we don’t have any kind of official or formal presence there anymore, and… what the military collects remotely can only go so far,” Kiriakou, a former CIA officer-turned whistleblower, told RT.

The Pentagon earlier implied that it has some intelligence on hand, including of its own, which it has to look into before a final decision on Syria can be made. “We’re still assessing the intelligence — ourselves and our allies,” US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday.

Kiriakou doubts that any of the countries that have leveled accusations against Syria possess any clear intelligence. For instance, British PM Theresa May, he said, chose to use reservations, saying, “all indications point to” the Syrian government culpability instead of explicitly attributing the blame to Damascus.

“That tells me that there is no intelligence that says: this is what happened, this is who did it.”

At an urgent meeting of the British Cabinet on Thursday, the ministers also appeared to leave room for error, stating that it was “highly likely” that the Syrian government was to blame.

“Unless you already have people on the ground who are reporting back and who you’ve cultivated over the course of years you are not going to get information,” the former CIA agent explained, adding that it will be even harder, if not outright impossible, to find out who was behind the alleged incident in a post-factum investigation.

“It could be easy to determine that chlorine was used, or something else was used, it’s going to be virtually impossible to find out who did it,” he said.

A potential assault on Syria, an independent country, by the US cannot be justified under international law, Kiriakou said.

“A response by us would be clearly a violation of the United Nations charter, which makes it a war crime,” he said, noting that the US neither has the permit from the UN Security Council nor from the “legitimate internationally recognized government of Syria to attack their property, their land.”

It is “a big guessing game” what happens in Syria next, Kiriakou said. There is, however, a plan for de-escalation if tensions over Syria with Russia and Iran reach a boiling point, he believes.

“Plan B, I think, is backing off. It’s declaring victory and going home,” Kiriakou said, adding that it is not the US military but, ironically, the US diplomats who are pulling the world dangerously close to an all-out war.

“When I was at the CIA, one thing that was very clear to me was that it was the military that was least excited to use force. It was the State Department, that always wanted to attack, attack, attack.”

With Bush-era war hawk John Bolton now advising the president on matters of national security, this scenario has all the chances to become reality, Kiriakou said.

“Now that John Bolton is a National Security Adviser, we have a real problem with the willingness in this White House to use force,” he said.

Were it solely up to the generals to decide on using the military option, “there would not be any of that,” Kiriakou said. But with Bolton calling shots, the US risks entrenching in Syria and going far beyond a single major strike, as it was in the case of the US missile attack on Syria’s Shayrat Airbase last year.

“I fear that we’re going to go deeper, far deeper this time than we did a year ago. This isn’t going to be a pinprick strike if we finally decide to move in.”

US blames 'bad actor' Russia for Douma 'chemical attack,' no timetable for response – White House https://briefnews.eu/us-blames-bad-actor-russia-for-douma-chemical-attack-no-timetable-for-response-white-house/ https://briefnews.eu/us-blames-bad-actor-russia-for-douma-chemical-attack-no-timetable-for-response-white-house/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 01:19:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-blames-bad-actor-russia-for-douma-chemical-attack-no-timetable-for-response-white-house/ The White House has refused to clarify if Donald Trump’s belligerent tweets signal a planned strike on Syria, but insisted that Moscow is responsible for last week’s alleged chemical attack, as it failed to rein in Bashar Assad.

Asked to respond to Moscow’s claims that the “civil defense” group White Helmets, which has links to Syrian rebels, were behind the April 7 incident, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told the media during an emergency briefing that “the intelligence provided certainly paints a different picture, and the President holds Syria and Russia responsible.”

When confronted about US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’ statement that the US was still “assessing intelligence” about the specifics of what happened in the Islamist-controlled suburb of Damascus, Huckabee Sanders answered that she “can’t get into the details,” but that the administration was “confident” that the attack was ordered by advancing government forces.

Huckabee Sanders went on to explain that even if it did not directly take part in what happened in Douma, Russia bears some of the blame for the attack, as it blocked six Western-backed resolutions on Syria, which supposedly failed to clear the country of chemical weapons following the 2013 Ghouta attack. More generally, she added that Russia has been a “bad actor” for the duration of the seven-year conflict.

The press secretary nonetheless refused to say if the US president’s Wednesday statement that Russia should “get ready” for “nice and new and ‘smart'” American missiles to strike Syria mean that the US is about to use force.

“We have a number of options and all of those options are still on the table – final decisions haven’t been made yet on that front,” Huckabee Sanders said in answer to half a dozen differently-worded questions, adding, at one point, that “no timetable” has been set for any intervention.

All of them have received non-life threatening wounds, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The incident occurred when reporters were about to return from the Syrian town of Douma, the last militant-held stronghold in the eastern Ghouta area. NTV broadcaster correspondent Aleksey Ivliyev, Rossiya 1 cameraman Mikhail Vitkin and Zvezda TV cameraman Vladislav Dodonov received non-life threatening leg wounds during the attack.

“All injured journalists immediately received necessary on-site medical assistance by medics from the Russian Center for Syrian reconciliation. Their lives are not in danger,” the ministry said in a statement. The journalists have been evacuated to a hospital to receive further treatment, the ministry added. One of the injured journalists, NTV’s Ivliyev has already contacted his channel, confirming the events.

REN TV’s correspondent Valentin Trushin has provided his account of the incident. The skirmish was prompted by flags put up by the group the journalists arrived with.

“The civilians were fraternizing with the servicemen, taking photos, everything was fine…” Trushin told the channel. “We’ve boarded the bus – and then shooting erupted. Turns out they’ve fired into the air. The militants swarmed the area and tried to disperse the civilians and take down the flags. A flag was torn down. Civilians pelted the militants with stones and then one of them got hit. The militant then fired erratically and hits our bus.”

The journalists were spared from sustaining more serious injuries because they promptly got on the floor of the bus when the shooting began, Trushin said, adding that the bus was “packed.”

The town of Douma remains the last militant-held stronghold in the eastern Ghouta area. The militants, mainly from the Jaysh al-Islam group are being evacuated from the town, following the agreement brokered by the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria.

Douma came into the media spotlight over the past few days, following the alleged chemical incident reported on Saturday. Pro-militant sources, namely the controversial White Helmets group, claimed that a chlorine-filled munition struck the area, affecting dozens of civilians. The site of the purported attack has since been surrendered by the militants and explored by Russian military specialists, who found no signs of chemical attack or its victims.

The alleged incident, despite lacking any solid facts, has been taken at face value by the US and some other Western countries, who pinned the blame for it on Damascus and Moscow, and they have threatened to attack Syria. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump vowed to launch “nice and new and ‘smart’” missiles on Syria and told Russia to “get ready” for it. Moscow has earlier stated it would shoot down any incoming munitions and target the launch sites.

The UN Security Council gathered in New York to weigh in on the alleged chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma. It is expected to vote on the rival US and Russian draft resolutions, calling for an investigation.

Russia and the US have separately requested a vote on their draft resolutions on Douma. The alleged attack was reported on Saturday by anti-government groups, which claimed that the Syrian Army dropped a chlorine-filled munition on the area, affecting dozens of civilians. However, no solid facts on the purported incident have emerged yet.

“We’re not in a position at this point to independently verify the allegations [about the alleged chemical attack in Douma], but, obviously, any allegation of continued use of chemical weapons is extremely, extremely troubling,” Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in a statement on Monday evening.

On Saturday, several rebel-linked activists, including the controversial White Helmets group, accused the Syrian government of carrying out a chemical attack that allegedly affected dozens of civilians in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, some 10km from Damascus.

The West swiftly reacted to the report with pointing the finger at Damascus and Moscow. US President Donald Trump hastily called the alleged incident a “humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever,” warning that a “big price” would be paid.

US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley considers the alleged chemical attack in the enclave as a proven fact, and blames Russian “obstructionism” and the “monster” Bashar Assad for the incident. The US envoy stressed that if the UN refuses to follow the US lead and intervene in Syria due to “Russia’s obstructionism,” Washington would respond alone.

On Monday, the US president also promised to decide on potential actions against Syria within 24-48 hours, adding that “nothing is off the table.”

“We have a lot of options militarily, and we’ll be letting you know pretty soon,” Trump said at a meeting with military commanders.

Syria and Russia have dismissed all accusations, calling the reports merely fake news that is aimed solely at helping terrorists and justifying potential strikes against Syrian government forces. Moscow noted that it had repeatedly warned about false-flag attacks being prepared in recent months.

On Monday, Russia proposed to create an independent investigative mechanism in relation to the incident, promising, along with the Syrian Army, to guarantee prompt access for experts to the area. Russia’s envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia stressed that Moscow is ready to serve as a guarantor of security for experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), who would inspect the site of the alleged attack. Reacting to Trump’s harsh statements, Nebenzia warned the US and its allies against “fishing in murky waters” of the Middle East, causing further chaos there.
