Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) speaks in front of the U.S. Capitol on July 28, 2022.

  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shared doubts about a woman of color being elected president one day.
  • "I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen," she told GQ.
  • She said her time in Congress has reinforced to her that "so many people in this country hate women."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a new interview spoke candidly about her political future, expressing doubts that she or another woman of color could become president because of the "misogyny" and "patriarchy" she says she's endured first-hand as a congresswoman.

"I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen," she told GQ in an interview published Wednesday.

The congresswoman said her experience in Congress "has given me a front-row seat to how deeply and unconsciously, as well as consciously, so many people in this country hate women."

"They hate women of color," the New York lawmaker continued. "People ask me questions about the future. And realistically, I can't even tell you if I'm going to be alive in September. And that weighs very heavily on me."

Since Ocasio-Cortez shocked the country by winning her primary in 2018 and seized the national spotlight, she's experienced hostility from her fellow colleagues on both sides of the aisle. In July 2020, then-Republican Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida reportedly called her a "fucking bitch." Last November, Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona tweeted out an edited anime video showing him killing Ocasio-Cortez. And in July, a conservative comedian sexually harassed Ocasio-Cortez using racist language outside the Capitol building.

Ocasio-Cortez has also become a target of right-wing media and conservative circles, and has faced a barrage of death threats. She's said she feared being raped and killed as rioters stormed the the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

"It's not just the right wing. Misogyny transcends political ideology: left, right, center. This grip of patriarchy affects all of us, not just women; men," she told GQ.

Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly dismissed questions about a future presidential run. She told GQ that she battles an "inner conflict" between the presidency being unattainable for someone like her and her belief that "anything is possible."

"Sometimes little girls will say, 'Oh, I want you to be president,' or things like that," she told GQ. "It's very difficult for me to talk about because it provokes a lot of inner conflict in that I never want to tell a little girl what she can't do. Eddie Hearn says that after numerous unanswered calls and emails, he is beginning to doubt Deontay Wilder’s claim that he wants to unify the four main world heavyweight titles in a blockbuster bout with Anthony Joshua.

Both Joshua and Wilder’s camps have talked up the potential of a unification bout this year, though it appears that the matter has been complicated somewhat by the recent draw between Wilder and former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Talk of a bout between Wilder and Joshua, the two undefeated champions, has been rife since last year but contract negotiations stalled before the WBA ordered Joshua to undertake a mandatory defense against Alexander Povetkin.

Since then, Wilder appears to more focused on a rematch with Fury after their outstanding bout late last year.

Joshua’s camp, though, are still holding out hope that they will be next to face Wilder, though Hearn says that they are nowhere close to a deal at the moment.

“We would desperately love to fight Deontay Wilder in Wembley on April 13th,” Hearn said to Love Sport Radio.

“We have offered him successively more and more. Not just guaranteed money, but percentage money. It will generate many times more than he has ever earned in his life. But there’s a certain level beyond which we won’t go because AJ is the A-side.

“Unfortunately to report that so far despite three, four emails, dozens of phone calls. We haven’t had one response from Deontay Wilder’s team.

“So sooner or later you take the hint that maybe they don’t want us that bad. But then they’re also, I guess, planning a Tyson Fury rematch.”

Wilder, meanwhile, says that he must strike while the iron is hot with regard to a second bout with Fury following the massive interest in their first battle.

“It was a controversial fight, and when it’s like that you’ve gotta come back,” he said to Fight Hub TV. “There can’t be no draws. There’s a winner and a loser, do you know what I’m saying?”

Should a contract to face Wilder not be signed in advance of Hearn’s deadline, it is likely that they will turn their attention to a rematch with Dillian Whyte, who defeated Derick Chisora by 11th round knockout last month. Joshua is the only man to best Whyte in his professional career, knocking him out in the seventh round of their December 2015 bout in London.

Just last month, we told you about a small group of Danish physicists who were casting doubt on the original gravitational wave signal detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), saying it was an “illusion.” The researchers alleged that the collaboration mistook patterns in the noise for a signal. Now Quanta is reporting that two independent analyses have been completed that confirm that detection. This should lay any doubts about the momentous discovery to rest.

“We see no justification for lingering doubts about the discovery of gravitational waves,” the authors of one of the papers, Martin Green and John Moffat of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, told Quanta. That paper appeared Physics Letters B in September. A second paper by Alex Nielsen of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover, Germany, and three coauthors, was posted to the physics preprint site arXiv.org last month and is under review by the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics.

But some drama still remains. Andrew Jackson, group spokesman for the skeptical physicists at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, is refusing to accept the results of the two independent groups’ analyses. Quanta‘s Natalie Wolchover writes:

Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang makes Alexandre Lacazette doubts admission https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-star-pierre-emerick-aubameyang-makes-alexandre-lacazette-doubts-admission/ https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-star-pierre-emerick-aubameyang-makes-alexandre-lacazette-doubts-admission/#respond Wed, 18 Apr 2018 15:28:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arsenal-star-pierre-emerick-aubameyang-makes-alexandre-lacazette-doubts-admission/

Aubameyang moved to the Emirates from Borussia Dortmund during the January transfer window as Arsenal looked to compensate for Alexis Sanchez’s departure.

And he’s made a promising start to life in north London, scoring six goals and providing two assists in his first nine appearances in all competitions.

Aubameyang’s arrival at Arsenal cast doubts over Lacazette’s future but the two have since combined to good effect on several occasions.

Aubameyang has now admitted he had concerns about the Frenchman, who he assisted as Arsenal took the lead in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle.

“My friend Lacazette was at Lyon when I was at St Etienne,” Aubameyang told Arsenal’s official website.

“He’s a player I appreciate and was good for me when I arrived here as he’s a nice person, very positive.

“I wasn’t 100 per cent sure about him when I came here as there were some Lyon players I didn’t get on well with but he wasn’t someone I had problems with when I played against them.

“I’m really happy to get to know someone so positive and he helped me settle into the dressing room.”

Aubameyang and Lacazette will be keen to impress when Arsenal return to Premier League action against West Ham on Sunday.

Aubameyang is cup-tied for the Gunners’ pair of Champions League showdowns against Atletico Madrid though.

And that means Arsene Wenger will likely be depending on Lacazette to offer the goal threat that he’s shown in glimpses this season.

Russian Embassy doubts statement released by UK police was indeed Yulia Skripal's https://briefnews.eu/russian-embassy-doubts-statement-released-by-uk-police-was-indeed-yulia-skripals/ https://briefnews.eu/russian-embassy-doubts-statement-released-by-uk-police-was-indeed-yulia-skripals/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 06:18:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russian-embassy-doubts-statement-released-by-uk-police-was-indeed-yulia-skripals/ The statement released by UK police on behalf of Yulia Skripal appears to be designed to cut her off from outside contact, the Russian Embassy in the UK says. The mission is calling for verification that the statement is genuine.

Scotland Yard earlier issued a statement that was apparently from Yulia Skripal, the daughter of former double agent Sergei Skripal, who are both recovering from poisoning in the UK. British authorities have been accusing Moscow of poisoning the Skripals since day one of the case, allegations that Moscow firmly denies.

“If everything mentioned there is true we cannot but congratulate our compatriot,” the Russian Embassy said in reaction to the Yulia Skripal statement, which it dubbed “an interesting read.”

The embassy then called for verification that the words attributed to Yulia were indeed her own. “With no possibility to verify it, the publication by the Metropolitan Police raises new questions rather than gives answers,” the embassy’s message said. “As before, we would like to make sure that the statement really belongs to Yulia. So far, we doubt it much.”

The statement, in which Yulia Skripal refuses the proffered assistance of the Russian Embassy and asks her cousin Viktoria to avoid trying to contact her, seems to have been “composed in a special way so as to support official statements made by British authorities and at the same time to exclude every possibility of Yulia’s contacts with the outer world – consuls, journalists and even relatives,” the embassy said.

The part where the statement released by the Met Police talks about Yulia having “access to friends and family” has also raised questions. Yulia’s closest relatives, according to the embassy, are her cousin Viktoria and her grandmother Elena, Sergei Skripal’s mother, who live together. Seeing as how Yulia is refusing contacts with Viktoria, it is unclear what family the statement speaks of.

“Particularly amazing is the phrase ‘no one speaks for me’ appearing in a statement which, instead of being read on camera by Yulia herself, is published at Scotland Yard website,” the embassy said. The original statement also says Yulia is “not yet strong enough to give a full interview to the media.”

Before the London police released Yulia Skripal’s supposed statement, reports suggested that she had been moved to a secure, undisclosed location, “thought to be a well-guarded country house.” The Russian diplomatic mission then voiced worry that she was being “held hostage“ – which was not alleviated by the release of the official statement.

“To sum up, the document only strengthens suspicions that we are dealing with a forcible isolation of the Russian citizen. If British authorities are interested in assuring the public that this is not the case, they must urgently provide tangible evidence that Yulia is alright and not deprived of her freedom,” the embassy said.

Yulia Skripal and her father had spent several weeks in a coma following their poisoning on March 4 in the city of Salisbury, where Sergei lived after being exchanged in a spy swap in 2010. Yulia and Sergei only recently woke up, though, according to the statement attributed to Yulia, both are still “suffering with the effects of the nerve agent used against us.”

Dancing On Ice: Jason Gardiner QUITS? Judge sparks doubts amid Jake Quickenden win https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-jason-gardiner-quits-judge-sparks-doubts-amid-jake-quickenden-win/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-jason-gardiner-quits-judge-sparks-doubts-amid-jake-quickenden-win/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 09:43:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-jason-gardiner-quits-judge-sparks-doubts-amid-jake-quickenden-win/

Dancing On Ice’s explosive finale last night marked the end of the first year of the show’s revival, as Jake toppled Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent at the last hurdle.

The show’s original contract ended in 2014, and was brought back with a brand new judging panel, including former coaches and Olympic athletes Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.

However eyes have already turned to the line-up for the 2019 series, and judge Jason has been questioned about whether he will return to the show for the next season.

“I don’t know. I don’t want to put it out there that I want to come back or not,” he told Metro.co.uk.

“I didn’t think this show would happen. I didn’t know whether it would come back.

“I got on with my life. I’m about to open in a starring role in a West End musical called Ruthless. My focus now is very much on the next gig.”

Although the choice may be out of Jason’s hands, as he currently has not been involved in any discussion with ITV bosses about the show.

He revealed: “I certainly haven’t had any dialogue with ITV or the producers about what’s happening next year.

“I think, to be fair, we’re all still very much in this series and we haven’t come to the end of it yet.”

After last night’s finale fans were involved in a “fix” row, as they spotted something unusual about runner-up Brooke’s performance.

One fan questioned: “How is it fair that Jake and Max both had more dancers both men and women and Brooke only had men!”

Brooke also commented on this at the end of the show after Jake had been announced as the winner, as she jokingly said: “Are you sure it’s not a fix?”

Jake spoke about winning the competition: “I can’t get my head around it, it might mean that I don’t have to do another reality show now.

“Brooke is incredible as well, she deserves to be proud of herself.”

Last night’s finale also saw Holly Willoughbymaking a raunchy remark about Brooke’s routine.

Dancing On Ice is available on ITV Hub.

Antonio Conte reveals Chelsea doubts of Alexis Sanchez deal as Man Utd sweat over move https://briefnews.eu/antonio-conte-reveals-chelsea-doubts-of-alexis-sanchez-deal-as-man-utd-sweat-over-move/ https://briefnews.eu/antonio-conte-reveals-chelsea-doubts-of-alexis-sanchez-deal-as-man-utd-sweat-over-move/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2018 16:17:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/antonio-conte-reveals-chelsea-doubts-of-alexis-sanchez-deal-as-man-utd-sweat-over-move/

Conte appeared to try and dampen speculation over Chelsea’s move for Sanchez.

But his words are not likely to kill off the reports that the Blues are keen on a deal.

Asked about Sanchez, Conte coyly said: “I don’t know, I don’t think so.

“About the transfer market I prefer to talk to the club and give an opinion and I repeat I don’t want to give my opinion on that.”

Conte had an infamous showdown with his Chelsea bosses last summer when they laboured to sign his top transfer targets.

Chelsea entered the race to sign Sanchez on Monday after expressing their interest in the forward.

Arsenal are determined to get as much as they can for the Chilean, who has refused to sign a new contract.

Express Sport understands Manchester United remain frontrunners to sign Sanchez, with a £350,000-a-week contract in place for the 29-year-old.

Chelsea are seeking a new striker to add firepower to their forward line, having added just one player – Ross Barkley – to the side this January.

Asked if he is happy with his squad, the Italian added: “I try to work with my players, I am very happy to work with them and we are looking to build something important for this club.

“If someone asks me my opinion on if we need to improve then I give my opinion. The most important thing is to work and improve every single player.”

Michy Batshuayi appears set to leave the club on loan, with Sevilla said to be keen on the Belgian.

But Conte says the Belgium international will be involved in Wednesday’s FA Cup clash with Norwich.

“He is Chelsea’s player and he is in our squad,” Conte said.

“Tomorrow he has to play. I think this is the truth until now.

“He is a Chelsea player and is having the possibility to show that he can play for Chelsea.

“This is the reality, in the future I don’t know what will happen.”

There are also reports that Andy Carroll is being monitored ahead of a loan swoop – although West Ham would likely fight to keep their centre-forward.

Nintendo Switch games SHOCK as MAJOR release doubts raised over top PS4 and Xbox One port https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-games-shock-as-major-release-doubts-raised-over-top-ps4-and-xbox-one-port/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-games-shock-as-major-release-doubts-raised-over-top-ps4-and-xbox-one-port/#respond Sun, 26 Nov 2017 11:45:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-games-shock-as-major-release-doubts-raised-over-top-ps4-and-xbox-one-port/

The Nintendo Switch games list has plenty of titles to choose from if you’ve just managed to buy one during Black Friday.

But for those fans who have had one since launch, the amount of AAA games is still pretty thin.

While the Switch benefits from having two of the best-reviewed titles of the year – Zelda Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey – more outside input is always looked for.

Fans currently can play the likes of Rocket League, Doom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, all of which have been pretty well received.

However, Nintendo Switch fans are still hopeful that the PS4 and Xbox One’s GTA 5 could be ported over in the near future.

There have been a few teases over the past few months that have suggested that something might be in the works.

But nothing solid from either Nintendo or Rockstar has been announced yet, following the two company’s recent collaboration.

LA Noire was recently released on the Switch and this has led to some questioning over just how well GTA 5 could run on the console.

The team at Digital Foundry have broken down the pros and the cons of a port arriving on the console, weighing their opinion on how good a Switch version would be.

Speaking about LA Noire, the tech experts revealed: “In terms of last-gen comparisons on a big open world game, the takeaway is that when docked, Switch has GPU horsepower to spare, but developers need to be creative on the handheld side of things – aspects that would likely translate to a prospective GTA port too. However, Switch has a more modern GPU, and it has access to an improved, remastered version of the game – and there are benefits here.”

However, while breaking down the performance, there was also some drawbacks that raise concerns over the open-world aspect of a GTA 5 port.

“The bad news here is that when stressed, Switch can run often worse than the original PS3 game, though it’s interesting to note that many of the same scenes drop on both systems.

“The evidence suggests that Switch is struggling to cope with the open-ended nature of this recreation of LA, and many of the interactions with AI, and vehicle physics cause drops below PS3’s performance level. Meanwhile, a base PS4 cruises at an unerring 30fps all the way through these tests.”

This leads to several problem areas for a GTA 5 Switch port – that while the GPU can handle the heat better than last-gen, it’s not the same story when it comes to the CPU.

It would prove pretty shocking to Nintendo Switch games fans if it was revealed that the hybrid console couldn’t handle a title originally launched on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

There’s also the fact that GTA 5 includes a lot more action than LA Noire, although the team at Digital Foundry do suggest a GTA 5 port is possible.

“Nintendo’s hybrid doesn’t quite have the CPU horsepower to match – and of course, LA Noire’s in-game world lacks much of the fidelity found in the RAGE engine,” they add.

“GTA features many more NPC types with much richer behaviour, more advanced world simulation and physics on another level. But by and large, this LA Noire port does work, and by extension the door remains open to the GTA titles somehow making their way across to the Nintendo system.

“However, just how well it would run, and the extent to which it could draw upon assets and technology from the later current-gen remasters remains to be seen.”

This latest breakdown suggests that earlier reports of a GTA 5 port in development could very well be true, although how much time Rockstar will need to fine-tune it for portable gaming is a big question.

It also raises the question over whether fans would be getting the upgraded PS4 and Xbox One version of the game, or the last-gen release that’s saw its GTA Online updates dry up pretty quick.

Rafael Nadal reveals doubts after seeing off Roger Federer No 1 challenge https://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-reveals-doubts-after-seeing-off-roger-federer-no-1-challenge/ https://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-reveals-doubts-after-seeing-off-roger-federer-no-1-challenge/#respond Thu, 02 Nov 2017 00:54:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-reveals-doubts-after-seeing-off-roger-federer-no-1-challenge/

The Spaniard beat Hyeon Chung at the Paris Masters today to ensure he will finish the year above Rodger Federer as the best player in the world.

Nadal has suffered with a number of injuries over the past two years, where he failed to even make a Grand Slam final appearance.

But he has bounced back by winning six titles in 2017 – including Roland Garros and the US Open.

And during the darker days, Nadal admitted he never dreamed of coming back as strongly as he has.

“I had periods of time that I have been injured,” Nadal said.

“I’ve had periods of time where I was not winning. And when that happened, of course I had doubts.

“But at the end of the day for me it’s not about believing in yourself.

“It’s about belief when you work.

“Then when you win, you believe in yourself.”

The belief has seen Nadal end the year as the top player for a fourth time, following successes in 2008, 2010 and 2013.

The feat is made even more incredible given he started the year ninth in the rankings.

But did he even think it would be possible to achieve the greatness he tasted in previous years?

“Of course it was not the goal (at the start of the year),” said Nadal.

“It was impossible for me to think about that when you are coming back from a tough period of time without playing tennis and with so many injuries in the last couple of years.

“But yes, here we are, it happened. And very happy of course. Means a lot, no? After almost 10 years since the first time that I finished the year with this number.”
