Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has unveiled his new file-sharing service, K.im, which will allow uploaders to get paid for content through a bitcoin-based payment service – Bitcache.

The new services are being pitched by the internet entrepreneur as a possible “solution to piracy” and the start of a “copyright revolution.”

Dotcom says K.im and Bitcache were designed to benefit content creators and consumers alike, describing it as a “win-win innovation for all and a boost for bitcoin.”

“I’m working for both sides. For the copyright holders and also for the people who want to pay for content but have been geo-blocked and then are forced to download for free,” he told Torrent Freak.

Dotcom is currently resisting extradition to the US over alleged copyright infringement and fraud over his previous file-sharing website, Megaupload.

While Megaupload allowed users to access pirated content for free, this new service requires users to pay a price set by the uploader before opening the encrypted file.

K.im allows users to upload their content and distribute it to dozens of other services, including Dropbox, Google, Reddit, and even torrent sites. The creator gets a code for a widget that they can embed on their own websites, inviting people to ‘buy’ the file

People who want to download the content can only access it through the K.im app or browser add-on after they’ve paid.

So what stops pirated content from being uploaded?

According to Dotcom, K.im will have no idea what people are uploading to the platform because the files are encrypted. There is a complaints process, however, where the rightsholder can claim pirated content.

“We have robust notice and takedown features,” Dotcom told Fortune.

The copyright holder can then change the price and receive the revenue while the uploader’s identity remains unknown.

“It’s the holy grail of copyright enforcement. It is my gift to Hollywood, the movie studios, and everyone else,” Dotcom said.

Dotcom tweeted earlier this week that he would be sending out 1,000 first-come, first-served invitations to test the platform.

Several testers reported positive responses to the demo.

Dotcom is using ICO (Initial Coin Offering) – an unregulated means of crowdfunding via use of cryptocurrency to get the service off the ground.

The ICO launch takes place on October 18 and the platform is projected go live nine months later.

Another interesting feature to the platform is the ability for whistleblowers to share files with media organisations and Wikileaks.

“K.im provides near perfect protection for whistleblowers,” Dotcom told Fortune.

“We expect to have millions of users every day and it will impossible for spy agencies to identify the whistleblowers within that mass traffic. And whistleblowers have strong deniability because they can say they used K.im for a personal backup, file aggregation, etc.”

Dotcom has been vocal in his support for whistleblowers and his disdain for “deep state abuse of power” citing illegal spying operations against him and his familiy.

Earlier this week he vowed to fundraise for whistleblower sites and transparency organisations “until all dirty deep state secrets are known.”

Lawyers for the Megaupload executives, including Megaupload founder Dotcom, on Friday called for extradition proceeding against their clients to be dismissed.

A newly released court filing stated the Government Communications Security Bureau’s (GCSB) interception of Megaupload executives Mathias Ortmann and Finn Batato was “unlawful.”

The finding is significant as it was previously assumed that Batato and Ortmann, unlike Kim Dotcom and Bram van der Kolk, were valid surveillance targets because they were not New Zealand citizens or residents.

“The circumstances of the interceptions of Messrs Ortmann and Batato’s communications are Top Secret and it has not proved possible to plead to the allegations the plaintiffs have made without revealing information which would jeopardise the national security of New Zealand,” the GCSB stated, according to the court files.

“As a result, the GCSB is deemed to have admitted the allegations in the statement of claim which relate to the manner in which the interceptions were effected,” the court document concludes.

All four men are currently appealing their extradition order to the United States.

A statement from law firm Keegan Alexander, which has been representing MegaUpload executives since 2014, said the admissions mean “the whole of the GSCB surveillance operation involving the extradition defendants was unlawful.”

“Not just because it involved permanent residents (as previously stated by government) but more fundamentally because the whole surveillance operation fell outside the authorisation of the GCSB legislation as it was relevant at the time.”

The firm also questioned if parliament was aware of the extent of the agency’s unlawful behaviour before legislation was amended to broaden the GSCB powers to spy on New Zealanders.

Kim Dotcom’s lawyer, Ian Rothken, told the Inquirer that Dotcom’s extradition case should now be dismissed in the interests of justice.

“The government’s illegal conduct has reached such an extreme level that we believe that no court should entertain an extradition proceeding so tainted with state sponsored abuse and violations of basic human rights.”

Attorney for Ortmann and van der Kolk, Grant Illingworth, told Ars Technica that Ortmann’s successful challenge of the spying operation calls the legality of the whole surveillance operation into question.

“We now believe on the basis of this judgement that the GCSB were acting outside their powers even in relation to a foreign person—because if they were entitled to spy on [Ortmann], GCSB would have denied the allegations,” he said.

“Which means the illegal spying must have been more than the permanent residence issue—in other words the whole operation was outside the scope of the powers of the GCSB.”

A spokeswoman for the GCSB told the New Zealand Herald“it was not possible for GCSB to plead to the allegations …without revealing information which would jeopardise the national security of New Zealand.”

Kim Dotcom tweeted following the release of the judgment suggesting that the next step was to establish the NSA’s role in the illegal spying.

In July 2017, another court ruling found that the GCSB had been spying on Dotcom for two months longer than had previously been known.

The agency claimed, however, it had no idea it was still spying on Kim Dotcom for months after officially ending its operation, according to court documents.

The Kim Dotcom-Megaupload saga seems like it will never end. Five years have passed since the flamboyant Dotcom’s indictment and arrest in New Zealand on US criminal copyright infringement charges. He’s wanted in the US in connection to the Megaupload file-sharing service he controlled before the US shuttered it in 2012.

Dotcom, while on bail, continues fighting his extradition from New Zealand to the US as part of a prolonged legal battle that could take another year or more. All the while, the US government has seized millions of dollars in Dotcom bank accounts in Hong Kong and New Zealand, as well as multiple cars, four jet skis, Dotcom’s mansion, several luxury cars, two 108-inch TVs, three 82-inch TVs, a $ 10,000 watch, and a photograph by Olaf Mueller worth more than $ 100,000. The Justice Department wants to keep all of it, too, according to a Friday filing (PDF) with the US Supreme Court.

Dotcom has challenged (PDF) the asset forfeiture to the US Supreme Court. He says the US government is abusing the so-called Fugitive Disentitlement Doctrine that essentially forbids defendants from using the court system to their advantage while they’re a fugitive.
