Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently visited Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar, for his birthday, to participate in a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat. Since then, he’s been posting photos and detailed descriptions of his trip on Twitter, encouraging other people to go there if they can.

Now, Dorsey is facing backlash against his supposedly ignorant promotion of Myanmar, where social media platforms — including Twitter and Facebook — allegedly helped fuel a mass genocide, SFGate and other outlets reported.

Unfortunately, social network leaders still appear to be tone deaf regarding Myanmar’s reported atrocities. Twitter chief Jack Dorsey posted a series of tweets encouraging followers to visit Myanmar after he’d been there for a birthday meditation retreat, seemingly ignoring widespread evidence of the country’s government committing genocide against the Rohingya people and forcing hundreds of thousands of them to flee. He focused solely on his trip, noting that the “people are full of joy” and celebrating the experience of listening to a Kendrick Lamar album after breaking silence.

As the New York Times‘ Liam Stack noted, the issue isn’t just that Dorsey completely sidestepped the Myanmar government’s actions — it’s that he did so despite social networking (mainly Facebook) playing an instrumental role in fostering massacres and other crimes.

We’ve asked Twitter for comment. However, it’s reasonable to presume that Dorsey’s Myanmar endorsement won’t help Twitter persuade the public that it’s responsive to complaints. People have already accused the company of being reluctant to remove some of its most toxic users, and now its CEO appears to have glossed over a government’s horrific acts while touting his own journey of self-discovery.

While speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was asked a question that comes up all the time — will Twitter ever roll out an edit feature? Dorsey has acknowledged the possibility of such a function in the past, and like before, his recent comments on the topic noted that while the company has been considering an edit function, it would want to be sure it was implemented in the right way.

“When we hear about the edit button, you have to pay attention not to what people are asking you for but the use cases,” Dorsey said. “What’s the question behind the question? And a lot of people want edit because they make mistakes on Twitter and they want to quickly fix them. They don’t want to look bad.” Dorsey used the examples of tweeting the wrong URL or including a typo. “So that’s a lot more achievable than allowing people to edit any tweet all the way back in time,” he said.

Dorsey’s comments make it sound like Twitter is open to an edit feature that would let users quickly correct a mistake. But more substantial edits, like ones that change the meaning of a tweet, appear to be what has kept the company from introducing an edit function so far. As an example, Dorsey presented a situation where one person tweets something that’s then retweeted by those that agree with the statement, but the original tweeter then edits their tweet to the point where those who’ve retweeted the post no longer agree with it. “And that’s what we need to prevent,” said Dorsey.

As for potential solutions to that problem, Dorsey mentioned change logs that would display how a tweet has been changed. “But ultimately we need to make sure we’re solving a real problem,” he said. “We’ve been considering edit for quite some time, but we have to do it the right way. We can’t just rush it out, and we have to make sure that we’re actually solving the predominant reason why people would do it, first and foremost. And then not making something that’s distracting or takes away from the public record in doing so, because I think it’s really critical that we preserve that.”

Like other social networks, Twitter has had a problem with manipulative content and hoaxes. Last month, it tweaked its reporting process so that users can specify when they’re reporting fake accounts and malicious links.

The panel plans to grill Dorsey about “the complex processes behind the company’s algorithms and content judgment calls,” and expects him to be “forthright and transparent” in his testimony, chairman Greg Walden said in a statement.

Citing the social media giant’s “incredibly powerful” ability to “change the national conversation,” the committee’s Republican head stated that Americans have a full right to raise concerns when “decisions about data and content are made using opaque processes.”

On the same day, Dorsey, along with Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, are scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee, to be once again questioned about alleged interference in the US elections, after their previous briefings failed to expose any significant ‘Russian meddling’ and were thus deemed “inadequate.”

Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle have been critical of Twitter and other tech companies, with the Democrats accusing social media platforms of not taking the ‘Russian meddling’ investigation seriously, while the Republicans are seeking to clarify whether their algorithms are biased against conservative views.

US President Donald Trump earlier on Friday personally criticized the tech companies for their alleged censorship. “Social Media Giants are silencing millions of people. Can’t do this even if it means we must continue to hear Fake News like CNN, whose ratings have suffered gravely. People have to figure out what is real, and what is not, without censorship!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The CEO of Twitter and COO of Facebook are leaving Disney’s board due to conflicts of interest, as Disney gears up to launch a digital streaming service to rival Netflix. 

On Friday, the entertainment giant announced that chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg and chief exec Jack Dorsey will not not be seeking re-election to its board. 

For years, companies like Facebook and Twitter have insisted that they are technology firms rather than traditional media companies. But in recent months they have faced increased scrutiny over their responsibility for the media that appears on their platforms. Meanwhile, Disney is preparing to move more directly into the technology space with the launch of a major streaming service in 2019 — and so the two senior execs and the entertainment company are parting ways.

“Given our evolving businesses and the businesses of Ms. Sandberg and Mr. Dorsey are in, it has become increasingly difficult for them to avoid conflicts relating to Boad matters, and they are not standing for re-election,” Disney said in a statement.

Robert Matschullat, former Seagram Company vice chairman, will also leave Disney’s board because the company limits service to 15 years, the company said. Orin Smith, former CEO of Starbucks Corp, will depart — due to rules that specify retirement at age 74.

Last night #WomenBoycottTwitter spread among many high profile accounts that stood in solidarity with “victims of hate and harassment Twitter fails to support.” The boycott itself wasn’t without controversy and spawned responses including a push to highlight and appreciate women of color on the platform under the hashtag #WOCAffirmation. While many weren’t sure it would have any impact, tonight Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey responded with a thread promising that after focusing today on “making some critical decisions…We decided to take a more aggressive stance in our rules and how we enforce them.”

Changes that he says are coming in the next few weeks include “New rules around: unwanted sexual advances, non-consensual nudity, hate symbols, violent groups, and tweets that glorifies violence.” Of course, we’ve heard these kinds of statements from Twitter before, and critics may note it only plans to deal with “violent” groups and overt symbols of hate. Will that be enough to make any real difference in the experiences so many people report on Twitter? Unfortunately, we’re still waiting to find out.
