  • New Zealand has banned foreigners from buying property, a response to skyrocketing house prices across the nation.

  • A “doomsday” style Brexit could see the country grind to a halt within a fortnight.
  • This is because the Port of Dover would collapse on “day one,” according to scenarios drawn up for David Davis, as reported by The Sunday Times.
  • From there, things just get worse as food would run out “within days” and hospitals would run out of medicine “within weeks.”
  • A spokesman for the Department for Exiting the European Union has dismissed this scenario from becoming reality.

LONDON — A no-deal Brexit could see Britain run out of food within days, according to a “doomsday scenario.”

‘Far Cry 5’ review: Destruction and doomsday in America https://briefnews.eu/far-cry-5-review-destruction-and-doomsday-in-america/ https://briefnews.eu/far-cry-5-review-destruction-and-doomsday-in-america/#respond Wed, 28 Mar 2018 23:03:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/far-cry-5-review-destruction-and-doomsday-in-america/

By Daniel Howley

The Far Cry series is known for dropping players into huge, open-world settings and letting them sew chaos and destruction as they take on each title’s menacing villain. But those settings and enemies have always been based in largely poor, tropical areas of the world, leading to criticisms of the franchise serving as a tourism simulator gone wrong.

For it’s latest entry, Far Cry 5, however, developer Ubisoft Montreal took the tried and true staples of the series — massive, explorable worlds and sandbox-style gameplay — and dropped them in the heart of Big Sky Country: Hope County, Montana.

That change in scenery pays off in a big way for Far Cry 5, which is one of the most stunning titles in the franchise to date. It also allowed for the game’s creative team to build a story about a doomsday cult building its own outpost in the middle of the U.S. at a time when the country is dealing with a resurgence in white nationalist hate groups.

But while the narrative initially captures your attention with the charismatic cult leader Joseph Seed, it never truly reaches its potential.

America, the beautiful

It’s impossible to talk about Far Cry 5 without mentioning just how spectacular its world looks. The team at Ubisoft Montreal built a version of Montana that allows the player to genuinely feel like they’re experiencing the grandeur of the American West. Traversing forests, running through open fields, fishing in streams and exploring small towns are a joy.

Driving an ATV across a mountain trail reminded me of the summers I spent biking through the woods with my brother, while riding around in a pickup truck on dirt roads and crossing rickety bridges took me back to road trips in the mountains around western Pennsylvania with my family.

The fact that Far Cry 5 was able to coax such specific emotions from my memories is a testament to how impressive this game looks and plays.

That said, there are occasional pop-in issues, and load times are long even on the PlayStation 4 Pro. I also wish Ubisoft added more variability to the cultists’ character models. At this point I’ve taken out so many shaggy-haired men wearing white sweaters that I’m starting to think the game is about a cloning experiment gone horribly wrong.

Peggies and preppers

Of course, that’s not the case. Far Cry 5 revolves around a cult, the ominous-sounding Project at Eden’s Gate, run by David Koresh stand-in Joseph Seed and his siblings John, Jacob and Faith.

At the game’s outset, you, a deputy with the Hope County Sheriff’s Department, another deputy, the county sheriff and a U.S. Marshal try to take Joseph into custody on a warrant. But after slapping the cuffs on him and get him into a waiting chopper, Joseph’s followers manage to take the craft down and rescue their dear leader back.

After escaping the wreck and evading capture by the cult, you meet up with a prepper named Dutch who helps get you started on your mission to crush the Project at Eden’s Gate cultists, or Peggies, as the townsfolk call them, who have taken over the county.

How does a cult take over a county in modern day America without drawing the attention of, say, the National Guard? By buying off the police, blocking the roads and cutting off all communication to the outside world, that’s how.

It’s a hard pill to swallow, but at least the game tries to explain how and why the cult wants to take over. What it doesn’t do, though, is make you feel any kind of emotion for the endless number of cultists you kill.

It’s a shame, because Far Cry 5‘s atmosphere and environments seem purpose built to tackle the issues of drug addiction, manipulative leaders and the existential fear Americans seem to feed on. The game’s big bads are interesting, and the side characters are fun to chat with, but the narrative never really takes you anywhere particularly new or insightful. It’s not a bad story, but it hits many of the same notes we’ve seen before.

Leaning on its strengths

Where Far Cry 5 excels is in the open-world combat that is a hallmark of the series and allows you to tackle virtually any task as you see fit. Need to take down an outpost? Why not sneak up on it and eliminate the enemies with your compound bow? Or, you could lure each enemy away one-by-one and take them out with your bare hands.

Not destructive enough? You could always go in with guns blazing, or run over every enemy you see with a big rig. Heck, Far Cry 5 even gives you the chance to pilot WWII planes armed with rockets and bombs, letting you rain destruction down on the Peggies. Sure, the planes’ controls are incredibly simplistic, but nothing is more satisfying than jumping into your plane to down the annoying helicopters and enemy pilots that have been harassing you on the ground for the last two hours.

Further upping the firepower level, is Far Cry 5‘s new Gun for Hire mechanic that allows you to hire non-player characters to serve as your backup. You can hire everyone from a sniper to a pilot to a very good dog named Boomer to help you pulverize the Peggies. Co-op availability also lets you fight through the game with a friend or friends.

Naturally, it wouldn’t be a Far Cry game if you didn’t have to capture a seemingly endless number of enemy outposts. But unlike previous series entries you never feel like you’re capturing the same plot of land over and over again. That’s because each outpost has its own unique characteristics whether it be a junkyard or pumpkin farm.

If you don’t want to spend your time blowing up a small chunk of U.S. soil, though, you can always turn to recreational activities like hunting, fishing or simply taking in the beauty of rural Montana.

Should you get it?

Far Cry 5 is a fun, downright gorgeous game to play alone or with a friend. The combat is fast-paced and the ability to pilot a plane or helicopter adds new levels of verticality to this insane game world. But while there are plenty of interesting characters ranging from alien-obsessed preppers to townspeople excited for the local Testy Festy, the game’s plot doesn’t quite reach the heights it sets out to.

Fans of the Far Cry series should absolutely dive into this entry, while more casual players will have a blast exploring the game’s open world and then blowing it to smithereens. Just don’t expect a particularly moving story.

APOCALYPSE PLAN: Doomsday bunker that fits 10,000 people with food to survive for a year https://briefnews.eu/apocalypse-plan-doomsday-bunker-that-fits-10000-people-with-food-to-survive-for-a-year/ https://briefnews.eu/apocalypse-plan-doomsday-bunker-that-fits-10000-people-with-food-to-survive-for-a-year/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 20:41:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apocalypse-plan-doomsday-bunker-that-fits-10000-people-with-food-to-survive-for-a-year/

Apocalypse fearers should head to South Dakota with £20,000 in their pocket, and purchase a Doomsday bunker.

Pictures have revealed the underground homes designed by survival company Vivos that stretch across 18 square miles in one of the ‘safest areas of North America’.

Over 100 miles from known military nuclear targets as well as away from large bodies of water, the location hopes to help survivors have the best chance.

They were originally built as military bunkers which used between 1941 and 1967.

It can even withstand a nuclear blast within a 10-mile radius, as well as protect from radio fallout or a chemical attack.

Within them are enough survival gear and food to live up to a year, with 10-20 people in each bunker.

Whilst enforced with steel doors and deep underground, it also offers military-trained security 24/7.

Natural resources such as water is pumped underground into the bunkers, whilst natural LED lights simulate the outdoors in place of the windows.

When the world isn’t under attack, people can safely go outside to make use of a hot tub spa, grocery store as well as a shooting range.

People who want one for themselves will also need to pay $ 1,000 a year for a 99-year lease.

With just 575 bunkers currently available, people who fear the apocalypse is imminent should act quickly.

The Vivos website explains the design: “The central theme to all catastrophic and epic life-threatening events has typically always been to find shelter underground.

“The soil of the Earth itself can provide the best shelter for most catastrophes, deep below the surface.

“Whatever the threat, our shelters are built and engineered to withstand or mitigate just about everything from a pole shift, to super volcano eruptions, solar flares, earthquakes, tsunamis, pandemics, asteroid strikes, the anticipated effects of Planet X /Nibiru, and manmade threats including nuclear explosions, a reactor meltdown, biological or chemical disasters, terrorism and even widespread anarchy.”

When is the next Doomsday predicted?

Rockstar launched their latest content update for GTA 5 Online today, currently available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The development team managed to take everyone by surprise by announcing the game’s newest heist, the first since 2015.

These new GTA 5 Online Doomsday Heist missions are now available to play on all platforms, and bring with a lot of new content to explore.

One of the big things fans will want to know is the level of Doomsday Heist payout is available.

It’s been confirmed that the Doomsday Heist Acts Base in-game money payouts includes these amount:

  • Act I: $ 650,000
  • Act II: $ 950,000
  • Act III: $ 1,200,000
  • Overall: $ 2,800,000

However, this is without adding any bonuses and other rewards, which can help bring the overall amount toward $ 10m.

If you can unlock the Criminal Mastermind bonus, complete all the tasks in order and do them in one go, things can get pretty lucrative.

One of the best ways of getting a handle on everything new is by checking out the official patch notes, also released today by Rockstar,

The Doomsday Heist is known as Title Update 1.42, which confirms more on what has been added.

This includes Facilities, which are new properties that give players access to the Doomsday Heist and acts as a storage space for the new Mammoth Avenger.

IAA facilities hidden under Southern San Andreas also give you access to the new advanced planning room where you will map out the steps to launch and complete each mission.

This time, operations will run a little differently: crews of 2-4 players will now be able to work together to complete every mission.

The drop in players needed will be a welcome update for fans, making it more stable and likely easier to complete missions.

Players can purchase a Facility from the Maze Bank Foreclosures website from a choice of 9 locations. Facilities can be customized with a choice of Style and Graphics.

Optional add-ons such as an Orbital Cannon, Security Room, Lounge, Privacy Glass and Sleeping Quarters are also available. Facilities come with space for up to 7 personal vehicles and has dedicated spaces for a selection of the new fully weaponized vehicles.

Upon purchasing a Facility, players can begin the Doomsday Heist by approaching the Planning Screen inside.

The Doomsday Heist consists of 3 acts, each comprised of new Prep Missions, Setups and Finales and includes new Criminal Mastermind and Elite Challenges.

This will mean completing Freemode prep missions, tactical setup operations, and experimental weapons and vehicles – each ending with an over-the-top finale that brings a payoff big enough to comfortably share with your fellow crew members.

Some missions may involve competition for resources with other crews in Freemode, and MC Presidents can even enlist additional club members, boosting your squad to up to 8 players to help secure your objective in these missions.

Some of the best new items can also be bought, with the Khanjali tank, now available to purchase along with the Mammoth Thruster personal jetpack.

Purchase of the Facility includes the optional ability to have your own Strike Team on call, or an Orbital Cannon capable of immolating any patch of ground that incurs your wrath.

Doomsday on screen: How Hollywood & the Pentagon combine to sell new ‘axis of evil’ (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/doomsday-on-screen-how-hollywood-the-pentagon-combine-to-sell-new-axis-of-evil-video/ https://briefnews.eu/doomsday-on-screen-how-hollywood-the-pentagon-combine-to-sell-new-axis-of-evil-video/#respond Sat, 09 Dec 2017 13:03:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/doomsday-on-screen-how-hollywood-the-pentagon-combine-to-sell-new-axis-of-evil-video/

America’s greatest enemies have been lined up for the latest add-on to Grand Theft Auto Online – perpetuating the old trope of an imminent global threat that only the US can meet.

Within seconds of the opening of the trailer for the popular game’s ‘Doomsday Heist’ add-on, all the usual suspects are named as possible culprits behind a bid to start a war against the US. “It has to be the Russians… or the North Koreans… or the Chinese… or the Iranians,” a billionaire tech mogul tells his crew of true US patriots assembled to save the fictional city of San Andreas from total annihilation.

While the tone of the trailer may be somewhat tongue in cheek, it continues a global trend of presenting whoever happens to be the bogeymen of US foreign policy as the perennial bad guys. And in the eyes of the western entertainment industry, the new axis of evil of Russia, North Korea and Iran, is ripe for picking.

Some of the most successful US TV series’ of recent years were plotted on the concept of the foreign enemy. In the Netflix series ‘House of Cards,’ fictional Russian president Viktor Petrov shares striking similarities to the western media’s characterization of Vladimir Putin.

Similarly, ‘Homeland’ has plots that often run parallel to political goings on while also pushing Islamophobic stereotypes. Meanwhile, ‘The Americans’ bolsters Russian paranoia by  reminding the audience that even your next door neighbour could be a KGB officer.

READ MORE: ‘Google’s plan to isolate Russian media is an act of information warfare’

Dr Matthew Alford, a Teaching Fellow in Politics at the University of Bath, whose research focus is on the relationship between screen entertainment and political power in Western democracies, told RT.com that “popular culture provides mood music for political culture.”

“Collectively our mainstream entertainment provides considerable support for the national security state,” he added.

Earlier this year, Alford co-authored the book ‘National Security Cinema,’ an in-depth analysis of the relationship between the US government and Hollywood. Based on thousands of pages of US military and intelligence documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act, the book reveals the power of the Pentagon to stop a film from being made by refusing or withdrawing support.

READ MORE: US military rewrites Hollywood blockbusters to save reputation, research reveals

One such film is ‘The Recruit’, the 2003 film starring Colin Farrell as a CIA agent in the making. Documents reveal the movie, which also featured Al Pacino as Farrell’s mentor, was heavily influenced by the CIA’s long-serving entertainment liaison officer, Chase Brandon.

The blockbuster includes lines about the new threats of the post-Soviet world along with rebuttals of the idea that the CIA failed to prevent 9/11.

“The level of military manipulation on film scripts has been fairly comparable since the early years of Hollywood. Over the last twenty years though, there has been a real spike in the military’s involvement in TV and the CIA has gotten much more pro-active,” Alford said.

The cliché of the Russian baddy has been around so long that it’s perhaps no surprise that recent political allegations against the nation have been so easy to swallow. Is there really a need for concrete evidence of Russian interference in US elections when audiences have been digesting negative propaganda about the country and its people since the height of the Cold War.

However, it’s not just the Russians that get the stereotypical arch-villain treatment. Any one’s game as long as it doesn’t affect box office dollars. The 2012 remake of Red Dawn (originally about a Soviet invasion of the US) intended to pit the Americans against an invading Chinese army, but later the antagonists were changed to North Koreans in order to maintain access to China’s profitable box office.

“The potential influence on the public of military-backed record-breaking blockbusters like Avatar should ring alarm bells in a democracy. This story of censorship has been routinely suppressed and soft-pedaled for decades,” Alford said.

Yellowstone supervolcano doomsday theory ‘demonstrably false’ – USGS expert to RT https://briefnews.eu/yellowstone-supervolcano-doomsday-theory-demonstrably-false-usgs-expert-to-rt/ https://briefnews.eu/yellowstone-supervolcano-doomsday-theory-demonstrably-false-usgs-expert-to-rt/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2017 16:48:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/yellowstone-supervolcano-doomsday-theory-demonstrably-false-usgs-expert-to-rt/

If you spend any time on the internet, it seems every few months humanity is faced with a looming existential threat from the depths of space. Planet X/Nibiru, the rapture or a wayward comet are, according to conspiracy theorists, destined to destroy us.

However, there is one particular conspiracy, treasured by theorists, that our impending doom will come from within planet Earth –  that lurking beneath America’s Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano that will kill us all.

Yellowstone, in the midwestern US, is – they claim – about to erupt and send unfathomable amounts of matter into the sky, covering anyone in the vicinity in a pyroclastic flow of ash and rock, and blocking out the sun, wiping out almost all life on Earth in the process.

Conspiracy theories tend to draw on some grain of truth. The super volcano really has erupted before, three times in fact, over the last 2 billion years or so, but the theory goes that it’s bound to do so again soon, right? RT.com caught up with Michael Poland, Scientist-in-Charge at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, to find out the full extent of this lurking supervolcanic ‘threat.’

Poland specializes in volcano geophysics, particularly in how volcanoes change and behave over time. Using GPS, satellites and other methods, he studies how the surface of Yellowstone National Park moves to figure out what’s happening below.

Firstly, what is a super volcano?

“Super volcanos, or super eruptions, are these eruptions that are on the eruption intensity scale, there’s something called the volcano explosivity index (VEI) and eruptions that have a VEI of eight are considered super eruptions. And that’s pretty massive, most eruptions that we see would be VEI three, four. Big ones are five and then once a century or so there’s a six, so a VEI eight is really, really tremendous.”

What would it take to cause one?

“You have to have a really amazing amount of magma in the subsurface, so that’s one of the criteria. In order to be able to put all of that stuff onto the surface and into the atmosphere you have to have it below the surface to begin with. And I think that’s something that is interesting about Yellowstone. We don’t know whether there’s enough magma beneath the surface to have a super eruption, the evidence suggests that a lot of the magma reservoir is actually solid, and about 50 percent of it is molten, so there may not be enough down there to have a super eruption.”

With that in mind, what are the odds of Yellowstone blowing it’s top?

“I think the odds of a supereruption in our lifetime, in our children’s lifetimes, in our grandchildren’s lifetimes are astronomically small. I couldn’t even quantify it, it’s not something I’m worried about.”

READ MORE: Iceland drafts emergency evacuation plans as volcano rumbles after centuries of inactivity

“I find it strange that Yellowstone is the volcano that’s ‘going to doom humanity.’ One of the things that bothers me about that is that there have been super eruptions when humans have been on the planet. There’ve been two and, in fact, both of those were larger than the last Yellowstone eruption. There was one about 74,000 years ago from Indonesia and there was one 27,000 years ago from New Zealand. Both of those were larger than the last eruption at Yellowstone and humanity survived.”

What about so-called earthquake swarms at Yellowstone? And wasn’t there a particularly strong swarm earlier this year, 4.5 on the richter scale?

“Yeah 4.5 is definitely noticeable, you’d feel it and people did, but there was a 4.8 in 2014 and there was a 7.5 in 1959. Certainly this summer’s swarm was really impressive, there were thousands of earthquakes, but that’s sort of what Yellowstone does. It has swarms all the time and one of them has to be the largest. I don’t see that as something to fear, however, instead I see it as an enormous opportunity for study.”

“The idea that Yellowstone is going to erupt and kill us all is so demonstrably false. There’s an odd disconnect I think between common sense and reality and what we know to be true and false based on past events and this irrational fear about yellowstone in particular.”
