Showtime Orders ‘Feature-Length Film’ In Wake of Surprise Cancellation — Who’s Back? https://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-lives-showtime-orders-feature-length-film-in-wake-of-surprise-cancellation-whos-back/ https://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-lives-showtime-orders-feature-length-film-in-wake-of-surprise-cancellation-whos-back/#respond Wed, 24 Feb 2021 23:20:45 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-lives-showtime-orders-feature-length-film-in-wake-of-surprise-cancellation-whos-back/

Showtime has fixed Ray Donovan‘s cancellation, ordering a “feature-length” film that will pick up where Season 7 left off. The news comes one year after the premium cabler pulled the plug on the Liev Schreiber-fronted series in a move that drew widespread shock and bewilderment.

Schreiber is, of course, confirmed to reprise his titular role for the movie, as are Jon Voight as Ray’s pa Mickey Donovan and Kerris Dorsey as Ray’s daughter Bridget. Showrunner David Hollander will co-write the script (with Schreiber) and also direct.

The film — which will begin production later this year in New York ahead of an expected 2022 premiere on Showtime — will be set in the immediate aftermath of the Season 7 finale, with Mickey on the run and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. “It will also weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago,” per Showtime.

“When Ray Donovan went off our air after seven great seasons, we heard from so many of its loyal fans that they were not ready to say goodbye to Ray and the wonderfully dysfunctional Donovan clan,” said Showtime president Gary Levine in a statement. “And so, for them, we are delighted that Liev and David are creating a thrilling new chapter of this iconic series.”

Shortly after Ray Donovan‘s Feb. 2020 axing, Schreiber hinted at the series’ eventual return on social media. “It’s hard to describe how amazing it feels to those of us in the Ray Donovan family who have been lucky enough to experience the overwhelming love and support that you all have expressed for our show since the news broke that Ray would not return,” the actor wrote on Feb. 12. “What’s even more incredible is that it seems your voices have been heard. Too soon to say how or when, but with a little luck and your continued support, there will be more Ray Donovan. So to all the Donofans who got their bats out and beat the odds. Thank you.”

The Feb. 4 cancellation came as a shock not only to fans, but to the show’s cast and crew as well. “We had no indicator that the show was ending,” showrunner David Hollander said, adding that a Season 8 was definitely already in the works. “We were behaving creatively as though we were in mid-sentence. And so, there was no sense that this was going to be a completion. This was in no way a series finale.”

Season 8, which was intended to be the final season, would’ve showcased the backstory of Ray’s family, Hollander teased, by bringing it into the present: “There were actually two stories to be told: What happened then, really, and how will that impact what happens now? The next step was what happened with Ray and Mickey in the ’90s, which would have been the creation of Ray Donovan as a character and as a fixer.”

Ray Donovan Un-Cancelled? ‘There Will Be More,’ Liev Schreiber Says https://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-un-cancelled-there-will-be-more-liev-schreiber-says/ https://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-un-cancelled-there-will-be-more-liev-schreiber-says/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 10:33:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-un-cancelled-there-will-be-more-liev-schreiber-says/

Sounds like TV’s favorite fixer might be fixing his own cancellation.

A week after Ray Donovan was cancelled at Showtime, star Liev Schreiber is giving fans hope that the axed drama might return after all. In an Instagram post to fans on Wednesday, Schreiber wrote that “it seems your voices have been heard” and it’s “too soon to say how or when, but with a little luck and your continued support, there will be more Ray Donovan.”

TVLine has reached out to Showtime for comment. The cabler confirmed last week that Ray Donovan would end after a seven-season run.

Schreiber’s message reads, in full: “It’s hard to describe how amazing it feels to those of us in the Ray Donovan family who have been lucky enough to experience the overwhelming love and support that you all have expressed for our show since the news broke that Ray would not return. What’s even more incredible is that it seems your voices have been heard. Too soon to say how or when, but with a little luck and your continued support, there will be more Ray Donovan. So to all the Donofans who got their bats out and beat the odds. Thank you.”

The cancellation came as a shock not only to fans, but to the show’s cast and crew as well. “We had no indicator that the show was ending,” showrunner David Hollander said last week, adding that a Season 8 was definitely already in the works.

SNL: Trump Calls on Ray Donovan to ‘Fix’ His Impeachment Problem in Season Premiere Cold Open https://briefnews.eu/snl-trump-calls-on-ray-donovan-to-fix-his-impeachment-problem-in-season-premiere-cold-open/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-trump-calls-on-ray-donovan-to-fix-his-impeachment-problem-in-season-premiere-cold-open/#respond Sun, 29 Sep 2019 11:02:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snl-trump-calls-on-ray-donovan-to-fix-his-impeachment-problem-in-season-premiere-cold-open/

With a summer’s worth of political fodder to choose from, NBC’s Saturday Night Live kicked off its 45th season with President Trump frantically working the phone to find a “fixer” for his impeachment problem.

To start with, Trump rang personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, who was more than happy to help deal with any “illegal dealings, cover-ups, or cover-ups of the cover-ups,” he said… while on-camera at CNN. Whoops.

Desperate to find a “sacrificial patsy,” Trump next called Mike Pence, but failed to convince his VP that the whole Ukraine thing was his idea. Donald Jr. was a bit more helpful, until Eric blurted out over the open phone line about the whole “treason” thing.

New cast member Bowen Yang made his debut as Kim Jong Il, who counseled the U.S. president to silence the whistleblower by …dropping him to the bottom of an ocean.

Even POTUS pal Kanye West was of little help, seeing as Don King interrupted to say that, following a meeting of The Black Wackadoodles, they decided Trump was damaging for their brand.

After getting a disconcerting pep talk from Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro, Trump phoned fixer Ray Donovan… or, more accurately, actor and onetime SNL host Liev Schreiber, who struggled to explain that Ray is just a fictional character. And while John Wick, too, is fake, Schreiber agreed that Liam Neeson might be up to the task of making Trump’s problem go away.

Jason Donovan RETURNS to West End for Joseph REVIVAL after almost 30 YEARS https://briefnews.eu/jason-donovan-returns-to-west-end-for-joseph-revival-after-almost-30-years/ https://briefnews.eu/jason-donovan-returns-to-west-end-for-joseph-revival-after-almost-30-years/#respond Thu, 14 Mar 2019 10:43:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jason-donovan-returns-to-west-end-for-joseph-revival-after-almost-30-years/

The Aussie singer and Neighbours star first starred in the title role of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat back in 1991. Donovan went on to perform the musical in a sold out 18-month run and now he’s returning for a revival. According to The Mirror, the 50-year-old will play Pharaoh at the London Palladium later this year, almost three decades after first appearing in the hit show there. Donovan said: “You never know the measure of a moment until it becomes a memory, and what a moment that was for me.”

He continued: “Joseph was a groundbreaker in 1991, and what a blast it will be to be back on the prestigious Palladium stage and be part of it all again with a brand new cast in this re-imagined 2019 production.

“I’m looking forward to breathing new life into Pharoah and I’m so relieved he doesn’t wear a loincloth!”

Meanwhile, Sheridan Smith joins the cast as The Narrator, while an up-and-coming actor will take the role of Joseph.

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is based on the story of Joseph from the book of Genesis in The Bible.

Foreseeing Egypt’s famine, Joseph goes on to become Pharoah’s prime minister is and eventually reunited with his family.

The musical features hit songs from Any Dream Will Do to Close Every Door To Me.

Donovan Bailey: Better days are ahead for Andre De Grasse https://briefnews.eu/donovan-bailey-better-days-are-ahead-for-andre-de-grasse/ https://briefnews.eu/donovan-bailey-better-days-are-ahead-for-andre-de-grasse/#respond Wed, 29 Aug 2018 13:02:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/donovan-bailey-better-days-are-ahead-for-andre-de-grasse/ When we talk about global track and field, every day matters.

This was the year that every male sprinter was to establish himself.

We saw it with Noah Lyles, the 21-year-old American sensation and fastest man in the 200 metres at 19.65 seconds. His teammate, Ronnie Baker, boasts a world-leading 9.87 in the 100 and four Diamond League victories in 2018.

In Canada, the big storyline has been the apparent decline of Andre De Grasse, the triple Olympic medallist in 2016, and the rise of Aaron Brown, whose 2016 and 2017 campaigns were plagued by injury and lane violations.

It has been an off year for De Grasse, who saw his season cut short at the Canadian championships in early July by a second hamstring strain in 11 months. But I'm certain he'll be much hungrier next year and will rebound.

If you only look at his times from earlier this year, the body of work is quite mediocre and Andre, I'm certain, is unsatisfied. Some of the races he entered and lost, it appeared like race rust. Maybe he couldn't train properly, and that could lead to race rust. If you're not ready, your competitors aren't waiting for you.

After running a legal season best of 10.01 in 2017, a seemingly healthy Andre returned to the track in late April and clocked 10.15 in the 100 at Drake Relays. He was slower in Shanghai (10.25) and at the Harry Jerome Classic (10.36) in Burnaby, B.C. ahead of nationals in Ottawa, where he went 10.20 before suffering a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring in the 200 semifinals.

Watch De Grasse's 200 at nationals:

De Grasse injured his right hamstring on Saturday at the Canadian Track and Field Championships. 1:16

I can't criticize an athlete if they say they're injured. Only Andre knows what his body is going through and what the training protocol is. He'll have to get stronger this off-season and put on weight, and his first 30 metres probably needs work.

Coming off the initial hamstring injury, which forced him to withdraw from the world championships last August, I thought Andre was going to run indoors in the spring to work out the kinks and some technical aspects. What I did at the start of each season, regardless if I was coming back as the champion, was run indoors and take forward steps from the first race.

Andre should run about five 60-metre races indoors in the winter, run a couple of relays in March and April, double up in the 100 and 200 early in the outdoor season, establish good times and let everyone know he's ready to contend for a title.

Deeper talent pool

Next year's world championships are quite late, Sept. 28 to Oct. 6, so it's going to be a long season. The fact Andre was injured this season might actually work out very well for him.

He'll have to establish himself next year and win, but there are eight to 10 guys who have established themselves this season as challenging for the title of world's fastest man.

Hopefully, he can get a gold medal at worlds and follow it up with an Olympic gold at Tokyo in 2020, but it won't be an easy task by any stretch.

It would be easy to say Brown was simply the beneficiary of Andre's lost season, and there could be some legitimacy to it, but I feel such a claim is off base.

As Aaron Brown, right, saw his star rise this season, Andre De Grasse's faded. (Darryl Dyck/Canandian Press)

What Aaron is doing now, running with confidence and flirting with the 20-second barrier, is what I believe he should have been doing before Andre burst on the scene in 2015 by winning the 100 at NCAA championships and Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Watch Aaron Brown set a 200 PB at Bislett Games:

The Toronto sprinter ran a personal best 19.98 seconds, to finish in second place in the men's 200m race, at the Diamond League's Bislett Games in Oslo. 4:34

I love the fact Aaron has a lane in the 200 at the Diamond League final in Zurich on Thursday (race time is 3:11 p.m. ET). After watching him 10 years ago as a 16-year-old in Scarborough, Ont., I thought he should have been a 19.90-second or 19.80 guy last year and was expecting him to make the 200 final at worlds.

He took advantage of this season being an off year for the world championships and Olympics and has gained a better understanding of the pressures of competing and using each race to build strength and minimize his weaknesses.

At the recent NACAC championships in Toronto, Aaron helped Canada's men's 4×100 team to relay gold and also revealed the final 50 metres of the 200 continues to be his "nemesis" this season. But the No. 1 thing is he knows it's a technical glitch. He also needs to understand what to do breathing-wise and not panic and worry about the competition.

Execution

In practice, I think he needs to do speed endurance running between 180 metres and 220, carrying his full speed to 180 and up to 220.

He needs to execute all the technical things he has been taught, use all the strength and power he's gained in the gym and put one foot in front of the other. It's real simple.

Aaron definitely is the fastest guy in Canada, with his 19.98 performance on June 7 at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, and next year I think he will only improve upon what he has done this year.

Donovan Bailey: Andre De Grasse is still the next great sprinter https://briefnews.eu/donovan-bailey-andre-de-grasse-is-still-the-next-great-sprinter/ https://briefnews.eu/donovan-bailey-andre-de-grasse-is-still-the-next-great-sprinter/#respond Fri, 11 May 2018 08:49:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/donovan-bailey-andre-de-grasse-is-still-the-next-great-sprinter/ Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

I watched the replay of the top finishers crossing the finish line in the men's 200-metre race at the Diamond League Doha meet last Friday and heard the analysis of former 1,500-metre world-record holder Steve Cram, who now works for the BBC.

"[Andre] De Grasse, nowhere. I'm not sure he's the future of this [event]."

Noah Lyles won in Qatar in a meet record and personal-best time of 19.83 seconds. Andre was sixth in 20.46.

American Noah Lyles ran a meet record 19.83 seconds in the 200m race at the Diamond League meet in Doha. Brown finished fourth, while De Grasse was sixth. 6:24

There are many commentators who have said the wrong thing before. That's part of the business.

I know Steve. I'm friends with him and he's a good guy. But it's sport. There is criticism along the way. If you're open for praise, you have to be open to criticism.

I know Andre is a huge talent. I think he's the next great sprinter. I really do. But sometimes as an audience, no one knows of an athlete's goal. Maybe Andre and his coach, Stu McMillan, talked about getting out of the race in Doha injury free as the main goal and they're happy with that.

Andre also got beat in his season debut in the 100 metres on April 28 at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, where he ran 10.15 seconds.

The Canadian sprinting star ran a 10.15 at the Drake Relays in what was his first race in nine months following a right hamstring injury. 2:40

When an athlete is coming off an injury like Andre, who strained his right hamstring last August that forced him to withdraw from the world track and field championships, one of the things you always do is run in a low-key competition or relay, so you're not alone or exposed on the track.

If I were him, I would have gone to the Commonwealth Games in April to run the 4×100 relay only, or just run a couple of relays, maybe the Mt. SAC in April in Walnut, Calif., or the Texas Relays in late March.

A strained hamstring is a muscle tear and very easy to take care of with proper therapy. The greatest problem for a sprinter coming back from a hamstring injury is getting yourself to a point where you are confident mentally that all the muscles are going to be firing.

Physiotherapy is very important, so in time you can push off the block and not think about injury or pain. Practice reassures you of this and competition enhances that feeling.

Ultimately, Andre has put himself in a position. Justin Gatlin is a 100-metre world champion outdoors. Christian Coleman is a 60-metre champion indoors. This should be an incentive for Andre, and it would be for me, to go out and destroy them on the track one at a time. You have to beat the king to be the king. No one is going to hand you a gold medal.

Andre De Grasse, 23, is among a sprinting group of similar age vying for top ranking in the sport, including 22-year-old Christian Coleman, left. Fellow American Justin Gatlin, right, is the reigning 100 world champion. (Martin Meissner/Associated Press/File)

I want Andre to break world records and be a world and Olympic champion. I think what he's dealing with now is race rust from a long layoff. You can see it.

When Andre came out of the starting blocks in Doha, his drive phase and rhythm wasn't there because he hasn't been in competition mode. Training and racing are two different things. Obviously, Andre is in shape because he's been training on the track since November.

He didn't run indoors over the winter and that was a surprise to me. But Andre has always started the outdoor season slow and not surprised people.

Andre is 23 years old and in a position now with five men around his age also vying for the top spot: Lyles (20), Coleman (22) Jereem Richards (24), C.J. Ujah (24) and Ramil Guliyev (27).

Lyles is one of the new studs. He's a huge talent and Coleman, who's also American, wants to be the next thing, while Gatlin is 36 but a world champion. If Andre wants to establish himself as one of the guys, he has to systematically take these guys down psychologically and physically on the track.

  • Mitchell paid homage to Vince Carter with his final dunk of the night, donning his jersey and matching one of Carter’s iconic dunks.

Donovan Mitchell won the 2018 Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday night, with two of his four dunks earning a perfect score from the judges.

Mitchell started the night off with a bang — bringing out another hoop to throw an impressive alley-oop to himself.

More bomb than bombshell: Social media mock WaPo’s Alice Donovan story as dud https://briefnews.eu/more-bomb-than-bombshell-social-media-mock-wapos-alice-donovan-story-as-dud/ https://briefnews.eu/more-bomb-than-bombshell-social-media-mock-wapos-alice-donovan-story-as-dud/#respond Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:51:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/more-bomb-than-bombshell-social-media-mock-wapos-alice-donovan-story-as-dud/

The Washington Post’s latest “bombshell” has alleged that a rookie journalist who published on left-wing and fringe websites was actually a Russian troll acting on Kremlin orders.

Alice Donovan, or someone writing under that name, published five stories on the left-wing website Counterpunch along with a handful of other less-known websites, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. The Post cited “internal bureau reports” to call Donovan a “pseudonymous foot soldier in an army of Kremlin-led trolls seeking to undermine America’s democratic institutions.”

The Daily Beast re-published the story under an even more sensational headline: “Kremlin troll wrote for far-left US sites.”

Prominent Russiagater Eric Garland echoed the Posts’s claims, saying Donovan was an example of the “Kremlin’s tactic of pushing propaganda through *paid freelance journalists*”

According to Counterpunch, however, Donovan was never paid. Of the five articles she wrote, “none of these submissions were commissioned and she wasn’t compensated for any of the stories.”

While the Post and Beast claimed the curious case of Alice Donovan is part of a Russian disinformation campaign, many social media users were not convinced.

Twitter user @historyinflicks pointed out that Donovan’s Twitter account had a grand total of 40 Twitter followers. That number currently stands at 69, as she has gained more followers since the WaPo story went public.

Alternet journalist Ben Norton called the article a “McCarthyite cudgel” aimed at critics of the Democratic party.

Viewpoint magazine’s Shuja Haider poked fun at the allegation that Donovan is linked to Russia.

The Daily Beast’s headline prompted a heavy backlash, too.

For its part, Counterpunch could not find clear evidence that confirmed or refuted Donovan’s existence.

“Since we couldn’t seem to prove that Donovan existed in the physical world, we flipped the matter on its head. Could we prove that Alice Donovan wasn’t real? Could we prove that she was a fiction? Could we, in essence, prove a negative? That answer came more quickly: No.”

The New Republic editor Jeet Heer said that even if Donovan were paid, it would be a poor strategy.

Ray Donovan Boss on That Huge Finale Twist — Plus: Big Cast Changes Afoot? https://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-boss-on-that-huge-finale-twist-plus-big-cast-changes-afoot/ https://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-boss-on-that-huge-finale-twist-plus-big-cast-changes-afoot/#respond Mon, 30 Oct 2017 04:40:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ray-donovan-boss-on-that-huge-finale-twist-plus-big-cast-changes-afoot/

The following post mortem contains spoilers from Sunday’s Ray Donovan — proceed at your own peril.

Over the course of five seasons, Ray Donovan‘s title fixer has sustained multiple bullet wounds, has been stabbed several times (once with scissors) and, in at least six separate incidents, found himself on a receiving end of near-fatal beatings. But Liev Schreiber’s immortal antihero saved his most death-defying stunt for Sunday’s Season 5 finale.

At the conclusion of “Time Takes a Cigarette,” Ray — racked with guilt over wife Abby’s death, father Mickey’s incarceration and, you know, murdering people for a living — followed Ghost Abby off the roof of a high(ish)- rise building and into New York’s East River. The episode (and the season) ended with the haunting shot of him floating unconscious in the water.
