“Instagram has deleted my post about Aleksandr Zakharchenko’s death together with his photo. This is “freedom of speech” according to [Facebook founder and CEO Mark] Zuckerberg,” Tolstoy said in a Facebook post about the removal. He attached a screenshot in which moderators claim he violated “community guidelines” that recommend users abstain from ‘propagating violence’.

The moderators did not go into details but warned that if Tolstoy makes similar posts again his account could be suspended, either for some time or completely.

Shortly after Tolstoy complained about the Instagram incident, moderators deleted his post on Facebook in which Tolstoy described Zakharchenko’s killing as an apparent attack by Ukrainian nationalists and expressed condolences to friends and family of the late leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic. Facebook has owned the Instagram image-sharing service since 2012.

Aleksandr Zakharchenko was killed by a bomb blast when he entered a café in Donetsk a week ago. His bodyguard was also killed by the blast and about 10 more people were injured in the attack. Donetsk officials said that Ukrainian special services were prime suspects in the case and local security services have announced that they had detained several suspects. In official comments, Ukraine’s main security agency, the SBU, denied any complicity in Zakharchenko’s murder.

This is not the first time public figures have complained about Facebook’s handling of politically sensitive posts. Earlier this week popular Russian rock musician Vadim Samoilov said that on the day of Zakharchenko’s funeral he posted the picture of himself with the late head of the Donetsk People’s Republic and a short video with his song “For Donbass!” on Instagram and both materials were soon deleted by moderators.

Samoilov also wrote that Facebook explained their decision as a desire to curb calls for violence, but added that this explanation left him perplexed as neither the photo nor the song contained any such calls. He added that Facebook’s policy looked especially strange to him because the network never attempted to delete or hide any of the openly provocative posts made by Ukrainian nationalists.

At least 120,000 people have attended the funeral of Aleksandr Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, who was killed by an explosion in a cafe in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Friday.

Zakharchenko’s remains were placed on display in the lobby of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in the center of Donetsk. It is not far from Cafe Separ, where the leader of the self-proclaimed DPR was murdered.

Over 120,000 people came to bid farewell to the assassinated leader, a spokesperson for the city council confirmed to reporters.

People were seen carrying flowers for the farewell ceremony of the Donbass leader. “[We have] nothing but tears! We do not know what to say,” three women from Yasynovataya town in Donetsk region told RIA Novosti.

“How could this [murder] ever happen?! In the center of the city where many mothers walk with children, where ordinary people walk!” another grieving woman exclaimed. Zakharchenko was married, and is survived by four sons.

Moscow condemned the murder of 42-year-old Zakharchenko, adding that it could be detrimental to the whole peace process in Ukraine. “It is a blatant provocation aimed at undermining the implementation of the Minsk Agreement in eastern Ukraine,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday.

Zakharchenko had headed the DPR since November 2014, when a crisis broke out in Ukraine following a coup d’etat that ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Donetsk province, along with neighboring Lugansk, engaged in open conflict with Kiev as they refused to accept the new government following the 2014 coup, establishing self-proclaimed republics. Zakharchenko had previously survived several assassination attempts.

An explosion that rocked a cafe in central Donetsk city in eastern Ukraine killed the leader Aleksandr Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, and injured several other top officials.

Media reports said that Zakharchenko was severely injured as a blast hit a restaurant called ‘Separ’ in Donetsk city center. He died later in a local hospital.

“The head of the DNR, Alenksandr Zakharchenko, has died as a result of a terrorist act,” a spokesperson of the self-proclaimed republic’s administration told journalists, revealing no details of the incident.

He said: “It is the seventh time I have played against Shakhtar in my career, once in the Super Cup and three in the Champions League, and every time before I have the same feeling.

“The first time we face in the group stage, my team went to see them and came back saying ‘wow’. My team were really impressed. Fernandinho played and Douglas Costa and they had a lot of Brazilians.

“In Barcelona all the time it was the same. ‘Shakhtar, Ukraine, who cares? Which players play? Nobody knows them.’

“I can assure you they were one of the best teams in terms of playing football. They had five or six Brazilians. Always was so tough for me.”

Thousands of people have rallied in Donetsk to remind the world about the second anniversary of the Minsk II Protocols, urging Kiev to deliver on its long-overdue obligations and put an end to the bloodshed in the east of Ukraine.

The rally took place at the central square of Donetsk on Saturday to commemorate the second anniversary of the Minsk agreements and to protest Ukrainian aggression. Despite the wintery weather, thousands of people, including representatives of the self-proclaimed republic’s authorities, took part in the anti-war march and demonstration, according to local media.

The protest started with a moment of silence for all the civilians who had been killed during the conflict.

“During the Minsk talks the world has heard us, and they know the truth. They talk more and more that it’s Ukraine who’s guilty in deaths of innocent people there,” deputy chairwoman of the Donetsk People’s Republic Council, Olga Makeeva, told the rally.

The protesters carried flags of the unrecognized Donetsk Republic and placards, which read “Ukraine, stop ignoring the ‘Minsk’ terms,” “Poroshenko, you’ve signed ‘Minsk,’ now implement it,” “Ukraine, implement the agreement” and others.

The Minsk Protocol is a roadmap to a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Ukrainian authorities and rebellious regions. Minsk II was endorsed on February 11, 2015, by the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany and further backed by a unanimous UNSC resolution on February 17. The document is aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Eastern Ukraine and providing constitutional reforms to grant Donetsk and Lugansk special status and autonomy.

However, Kiev has thus far failed to grasp the political changes, instead opting to blame Moscow for the unresolved conflict. Russia utterly fails to understand the tendency in the West to lay responsibility for the settlement of the Ukraine crisis exclusively on Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Munich.

On Saturday, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that “temporarily” recognizes documents issued by authorities in the troubled Donbass region as legal in Russia “based on the norms of international humanitarian law.”

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry responded that Kiev “vigorously condemns” and does not recognize the Russian decree. Having accused Russia of “violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity,” the ministry claimed the proclamation on the documents was a “de facto recognition of illegal authorities in Donbass.”

Nevertheless, the decree provides relief to the population of the crisis-stricken regions from bureaucratic acrimony, and will be in place until the Minsk agreements aimed at settling the conflict is implemented in Ukraine, the Russian FM stated.
