Joseph met with general manager John Elway on Monday after completing a 6-10 season and was dismissed with two years and about $ 6 million US left on his contract.

"Although we decided to make this change, I believe Vance is a good football coach who has a bright future in this league," Elway said in a statement ahead of his news conference scheduled for later Monday.

"Vance made a lot of strides and deserves credit for how hard and competitively the team played this season. There's always going to be a high standard here — the bottom line is we need to win more football games. We're excited about the foundation that's being built and look forward to putting in the work to get the Broncos back on the winning track."

Despite that foundation, the Broncos' job isn't what it was just two years ago when Joseph replaced Gary Kubiak, who stepped down a year after leading Denver to the Super Bowl 50 championship.

'Special place with great fans'

Joseph, who's expected to be a candidate for the Cincinnati job, thanked the Broncos for giving him his first NFL head coaching job.

"It's disappointing not being able to finish what we started, but I'm incredibly proud of the players and coaches for how they fought and worked every week," Joseph said in a statement. "I also appreciate the support staffs who put in countless hours behind the scenes helping our team. This is a special place with great fans."

Joseph acknowledged after the Broncos’ 23-9 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday in which there were more than 12,000 no-shows at Mile High Stadium that an 11-21 record wasn’t good enough by Broncos standards.

Still, he said, "I think we've put a lot of work in. There's a foundation that's been laid here that should pay off in the future." Joseph said he wanted to "come back and make this thing right."

Several players, including star Von Miller, said they wanted Joseph to return for a third season. Instead, Elway decided to embark on a search for his fourth head coach in six seasons.

Slew of injuries biggest regret

Gase confirmed his dismissal in a text message Monday to The Associated Press while Dolphins executive vice-president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum has been reassigned within the organization after the team missed the playoffs for the 15th time in 17 years.

Owner Stephen Ross made the move after Gase went 23-26 with the Dolphins. A 42-17 loss Sunday at Buffalo sealed his fate.

The next coach will be the Dolphins' 10th since 2004, including three interim coaches. Stuck on a treadmill of mediocrity, they've finished with six to eight wins in nine of the past 10 seasons, and haven't won a playoff game since 2000.

Last week Gase said his biggest regret about 2018 was a slew of injuries. The Dolphins lost 13 key players to season-ending injuries, including two top offensive linemen, their best run stopper, top cornerback Xavien Howard and dynamic receivers Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill missed five games.

Gase was seen as a rising young star coach when the Dolphins hired him, and even more so after they went 10-6 in his first season and made the playoffs for the only time since 2008.

Lewis winless in post-season

Lewis' stay in Cincinnati included a record five straight playoff appearances without so much as one win.

The move Monday ends the second-longest head coaching tenure in the league. New England’s Bill Belichick is wrapping up his 19th season with another postseason berth. He’s won five Super Bowls and made eight appearances in the title game.

Lewis leaves Cincinnati with an 0-7 mark in the post-season, the worst mark by an NFL coach. The Bengals haven't won a playoff game since the 1990 season, tied with Washington for the fifth-longest futility in league history.

A third straight losing season punctuated by plummeting attendance prompted change-resistant owner Mike Brown to finally cut ties with Lewis.

Cardinals an NFL-worst 3-13

Wilks was sent packing after just one season as head coach.

His firing Monday followed a 3-13 season, the franchise's worst record in 18 years and the worst in the NFL this season.

The 49-year-old was hired after Bruce Arians retired following five seasons in Arizona.

With Wilks' status confirmed, there is still one major uncertainty: Will wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald be back for a 16th season? 

Trio of Falcons assistants axed

The Atlanta Falcons have fired offensive co-ordinator Steve Sarkasian, defensive co-ordinator Marquand Manuel and special teams co-ordinator Keith Armstrong one day after the end of the team's first losing season since 2014.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank said recently he still has confidence in coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff, but changes were expected after a 7-9 finish.

The Falcons closed with three straight wins, including Sunday's 34-32 win at Tampa Bay, but it wasn't enough to save the jobs of the co-ordinators.

Only two years after their 2016 Super Bowl season, the Falcons were hurt by injuries and inconsistent play this season, Quinn's fourth as head coach.

This is just one of many fascinating facts I learned from Action for Dolphins founder and CEO Sarah Lucas.

Apparently, if we change the order of a sentence, our marine friends can still understand what we’re saying. 

“Here’s a better one,” she smiles.

“If a pregnant woman swims with dolphins, they can hear the baby’s heartbeat. So don’t be surprised if they lean their heads towards your belly – they’re fascinated.”

Over the years, we’ve heard heartwarming stories about dolphins, from saving lives at sea to forming lifelong bonds with humans and other animals. Take JoJo, for example.

“JoJo was friends with a diving instructor in the Turks and Caicos Islands for 20 years,” says Sarah.

“They swam together every day.” 

Originally from Australia, Sarah spent her childhood on her father’s sailing boat meeting dolphins and humpback whales in their natural environment.

She founded animal charity Action for Dolphins in 2012 after witnessing a very different side of dolphin life.

Perhaps you have seen Blackfish, the harrowing documentary about Tilikum the whale. But it was The Cove (revealing the Japanese dolphin hunts) that first caught Sarah’s attention. 

“At the end of the film, you see dolphins being driven into a cove and slaughtered. The water turns red,” she says.

“I just had to help, so I volunteered to monitor the Japanese hunts with the Dolphin Project.”

Sarah’s job was to watch the hunts and count how many dolphins died – a difficult task for any animal lover.

On her return from Japan, Action for Dolphins took shape. 

“The mission of AFD is to stop cruelty to dolphins,” she says. “Dolphins don’t get the international legal protection that most animals have.”

After seeing the film Blackfish Sarah felt compelled to help out efforts in Japan

The charity focuses on two main areas: dolphin hunting in the wild and dolphin captivity. 

“Those two issues are linked. Aquariums often pay for animals captured by the hunts.” 

Sarah adds that about 2,000 dolphins are killed in the Japanese hunts every year. Another 10 to 20,000 are killed in Peru, and there are about 300 dolphins currently in captivity around the world. 

In some of the countries that dolphins are mistreated, there are strict animal welfare laws. Sadly, they’re often ignored, so AFD brings legal action to enforce them and create new ones to keep dolphins safe. 

“They take time and money, but they pay off in a big way,” Sarah says. “We’ve won three legal actions already.”

It’s not surprising that many of us have never heard about dolphin hunting or about what’s happening in marine parks. That’s why The Cove and Blackfish have helped AFD to make an impact. 

“SeaWorld has lost over 80 per cent of its profits and in Europe, multiple countries have banned dolphin captivity,” Sarah says.

“Blackfish generated an awareness that dolphins really suffer in captivity.” 

Scientists have found that dolphins and whales could have higher social and emotional intelligence than we do, so to have their family members stolen or killed doesn’t bear thinking about. In captivity, they suffer from disease and live much shorter lives than those in their natural habitats. 

“Dolphins are their own worst enemy in a sense,” Sarah muses.

“Their mouths are turned upward to catch fish, so it looks like they’re smiling. It’s understandable that people don’t realise that they’re suffering.”

If dolphin hunting wasn’t enough, whales are in peril, too. Pilot whales are hunted in the Faroe Islands, minke whales are killed in Norway and Japan hunts in the Antarctic.

What’s the impact of all this? We don’t really know.

“What we do know is that hunts have decreased and that’s because there are fewer dolphins to catch. They’ve destroyed those ecosystems.” 

What can we do to help? “First and foremost, stop visiting marine parks so dolphins are saved from captivity then donate to AFD. Your money will help fight the dolphin hunts in Japan and, hopefully, shut them down altogether. 

“We’re building a sanctuary in Australia to look after all the animals released from captivity,” says Sarah.

“They’ll have a humane life before returning to the wild, if possible.” 

It’s not just Australia taking action – there will be sanctuaries in Greece and America and the charity has created a new base in the UK, where dolphin captivity ended in the 90s.

Apparently we are huge supporters of Sarah’s cause and we want to capitalise on that. More notable supporters include celebrities such as Richard Branson and Olivia Newton-John, and bath and body brand Lush. 

“Lush gave us a grant to put up a billboard in Japan last year,” Sarah says.

“They sell products with dolphins on and donate some of the profits to us.” 

Sarah’s ultimate goal is to stop dolphin hunts around the world – and she’s pretty positive about it. 

“It’s going to start moving quickly,” she says.

“Public opinion is changing. We just need a few more years of pushing, speaking up and signing petitions. Dolphins will be free.”

Why are humans so smart? We must have evolved in an environment that made more intelligent individuals likely to survive. But this just raises new questions: what factors in the environment could have created an evolutionary pressure for intelligence? And how have other species that faced similar pressures ended up evolving?

One prominent hypothesis about our brains is that the human lineage became especially social, which required a suite of advanced cognitive skills to manage the relationships that were intertwined with survival. There’s evidence that social behavior is associated with bigger brains across the primate family, and the same correlation has been found in birds.

There’s now evidence that whale and dolphin brains show the same relationship. The finding offers new support for the “social brain hypothesis,” and it’s an exciting discovery. But not all researchers agree on how this evidence should be interpreted.

Whales and dolphins may be more like us than previously thought. While they are more comfortable in water than humans, they live in tightly-knit social groups, have complex relationships, and speak to each other, a new study suggests.

The major new wide ranging study, published Monday in the journal Nature, Ecology & Evolution, even suggested that our cetacean cousins (dolphins, whales and porpoises) even chat to each using a range of regional dialects.

Scientists from The University of Manchester, University of British Columbia, Stanford University in California and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) collaborated on the project, which linked the complexity of cetacean culture and behaviour to the size of their brains.

The study compiled information on 90 different species of cetaceans to create a vast dataset of their brain size and social behaviors. Upon studying the data, the team found“overwhelming evidence” that they have “sophisticated social and cooperative behaviour traits, similar to many found in human culture.”

“As humans, our ability to socially interact and cultivate relationships has allowed us to colonise almost every ecosystem and environment on the planet. We know whales and dolphins also have exceptionally large and anatomically sophisticated brains and, therefore, have created a similar marine based culture,”said Dr. Susanne Shultz of the University of Manchester.

“That means the apparent co-evolution of brains, social structure, and behavioural richness of marine mammals provides a unique and striking parallel to the large brains and hyper-sociality of humans and other primates on land. Unfortunately, they won’t ever mimic our great metropolises and technologies because they didn’t evolve opposable thumbs,” Shultz added.

Some of the similarities between humans and cetaceans include working together for mutual benefit, teaching others how to hunt and use tools, ‘talking’ to each other using ‘name’ recognition, and social play.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Lawrence Timmons has been indefinitely suspended by the team after he was reportedly found at the airport on Sunday after the team filed a missing persons report, according to TMZ.

The team had reportedly grown concerned when the 31-year-old Timmons was not in his hotel room during bed check and filed the report.

Police reportedly found Timmons in the boarding area waiting to take a flight to Pennsylvania to see his baby daughter.

Timmons did not play in the Dolphins’ Week 2 win over the Los Angeles Chargers and though he reportedly said he wants to return to football, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the team is going to have Timmons meet with doctors to determine “what is wrong.” According to Schefter, one league source said they don’t think Timmons was showing early onset of CTE.

Dolphins head coach Adam Gase did not address questions about Timmons after Sunday’s game, saying, “I need to figure some things out before I talk about this.”

Timmons signed a two-year, $ 10 million with the Dolphins this offseason.

With Cuba facing two extremely destructive hurricanes this weekend, tourists and even dolphins have been evacuated from the projected paths of the storms.

Hurricane Irma barrelled into the island’s northern coast early Saturday, fresh from claiming 21 lives as it roared across the eastern Caribbean and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The Category 5 storm hit Cuba’s Ciego de Avila province shortly after midnight, bringing 260kph winds and lashing rain.

News coverage on the island is filled with footage of enormous waves breaking over sea walls and fallen electricity lines. The hurricane is forecast to bring dangerous storm surges of up to three meters, Reuters reports.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Jose, following hot on Irma’s heels, is set to pass through many of the same islands ravaged by its predecessor.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center says the storm is nearing Category 5 status, carrying winds of up to 240kph.

Ahead of this double onslaught, Cubans boarded up windows and secured valuables, while tourists have been evacuated or moved to shelters.

The country’s ACN state news agency reported that six dolphins have been airlifted to safety from an aquarium.

The animals were wrapped in wet towels and placed on foam mattresses for evacuation by helicopter. Accompanied by their handlers, the marine mammals were taken to the province of Cienfuego in the southwest of the country.

“For the moment, they are in a pool that offers similar living conditions and if the weather doesn’t allow them to be kept there, they will be moved to a salt water pool at a hotel,” the head of the aquarium, Gonzalo Carrero Escobar, said, according to AFP.

Florida is bracing itself for Irma’s arrival early Sunday. Over five million people have been ordered to evacuate, causing huge traffic problems on highways as well as gas shortages and long lines at filling stations.
