The photograph that Vasundhara Vee handed animal communicators Tarun and Celia Cherian only captured two-thirds of the Mumbai-based singer’s living room. But gazing at the photo, Celia was able to pinpoint the spot — not in the image — where Vasundhara’s dog Monk would regularly urinate.

The dog, named after American jazz legend Thelonious Monk, was 1,400 miles away in Delhi. But sitting in Bangalore, Celia told Vasundhara that Monk was talking about someone named “Biku.” Initially puzzled, Vasundhara realized — stunned — that “Biku” was how her grandmother addressed Monk. How did Celia know? Vasundhara had approached the Cherians seeking help for Monk’s anxiety, which was making the dog compulsively aggressive. Now, a year after her consultation with the animal communicators, Vasundhara claims that Monk is much calmer.

Priya Saklani, pet psychic

Science scoffs at the Cherians’ practice. But when animals go missing or are ill, an increasing number of pet owners in India are turning to psychics spread across the country and beyond. Until earlier this year, the Cherians received on average one request per month; at times they now get two per week. Delhi psychic Madhu Kotiya has seen a similar increase in demand. So has Barbara Echtler, a popular German psychic who says many more Indians approach her by email now than a few months back. And in Mumbai, Priya Saklani, among the pioneers of the practice in India, says she now conducts seven sessions of pet communication per day, double her workload from three years ago. “I constantly have a waiting list,” says Saklani.

The proliferation in demand for animal communicators is part of a larger shift in economic clout — and reveals a widening prosperity gap. Even though India is among the world’s fastest-growing major economies, its per capita income hovers around $ 4.50 per day. And yet the relatively affluent middle class coddles an estimated 15 million pets, making the country the world’s fastest-growing pet-care market, according to research firm Euromonitor. And psychics in India are getting in on the action, charging from $ 40 to $ 60 per session, though some also offer free services to those who can’t afford the fee. Echtler charges more than $ 70 per session, which typically lasts an hour.

But no other part of the pet-care industry tests the limits of science — or divides the broader community of animal caregivers — the way psychics do. “There is absolutely no scientific basis [to claims of psychics],” says R.S. Sharma, president of the Indian Veterinary Association. “They’re exploiting people’s love for their pets.”

The criticism doesn’t affect animal communicators. Tarun Cherian says convincing the world about their methods isn’t important — helping those who come to them is. But the absence of scientific evidence to back claims of being able to communicate with pets at a distance means pet owners who consult psychics also often face uncomfortable questions. When Pooja Guha, who describes herself as a culture analyst, approached Saklani in Mumbai for help with her perennially nervous 18-month-old rough collie Buddy and the treatment didn’t appear to be working, “there were fingers pointed” at her by family and friends, Guha recalls. But Buddy got better after Saklani asked Guha to overhaul the dog’s diet. Cooked meat was out; only raw meat was allowed, with a topping of organic coconut oil.

Many reach out to psychics in desperation after veterinarians (if the pet is unwell) or cops (if the animal is missing) have given up. Take Mumbai-based writer Jaibal Naduvath, for instance. His cat Mao — Naduvath got him in China — was listless and vomited regularly. The vets diagnosed an incurable kidney disease and didn’t give the tabby long to live. So Naduvath turned to Saklani. “I was a skeptic at first,” he recalls. But after speaking with Mao, Saklani managed to revitalize the animal’s health. Saklani, Naduvath says, would tell him how Mao was feeling after speaking with the cat. Now, a year after he approached the communicator, the 9-year-old cat has a healthy appetite and is playful again. “I don’t know her magic, but Mao’s energy levels are high,” says Naduvath.

Others turn to psychics to avoid allopathic treatments for their pets, especially if the ailment requires heavy medication. Guha says she feared doctors would “pump Buddy with medicines endlessly.” Vasundhara says she was convinced her dog Monk was suffering the effects of early trauma endured as a stray on the mean streets of Delhi, where she had found him. Doctors had recommended psychiatric medication, but that, she feared, would rob him of his personality and dumb him down. One doctor even suggested putting Monk to sleep. “I refused to treat him like he was mentally sick,” says Vasundhara.

It is personal experiences that many psychics say have led them to conclude they can communicate with animals. Sitting around a circular table in their house in a leafy neighborhood of northeast Bangalore, the Cherians explain how Tarun first communicated with a bird more than 25 years ago. Then, on a coastal trip, the couple say, they spoke with a dolphin. But they claim interactions with Buffy, their now-deceased dog, were what convinced them.

That more and more Indians are queuing up to seek help from psychics points to a growing sensitization about the emotions of pets, says Celia, as Indian society opens up to discussions on mental illness more broadly. And for those who approach psychics, the experience can be as life-changing as it is for their pets. Notes Vasundhara, “This has been simply the most extraordinary period of my life.”

In news that everyone and their mother could have predicted, Universal’s upcoming Doctor Dolittle movie has vacated its May 24, 2019 release date…mainly because a little movie called Star Wars: Episode 9 decided it wanted that Memorial Day weekend and Star Wars gets what Star Wars wants and a talking veterinarian (even one played by Robert Downey Jr.) cannot stop it.

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle (as it is currently titled) has moved from May 24, 2019 to April 12, 2019, giving it a month-long buffer before Star Wars arrives to push the competition into the smaller auditoriums all over the globe. That May release date is a homecoming for the Star Wars series, which relocated to December with Star Wars: The Force Awakens a few years back after owning the Memorial Day weekend for the past 40 years. Those warm and fuzzy feelings Star Wars fans have at the thought of the saga returning to May translate to headaches for the folks at Universal, who now have to update all of their spreadsheets.

Based on the children’s books written by Hugh Lofting, this Doctor Dolittle project is Hollywood’s latest attempt to bring this character to the big screen. Interestingly, this film (which will be written and directed by Stephen Gaghan) sounds like it will have a lot in common with with the infamous 1967 film adaptation, a legendary bomb and one of the final nails in the coffin of “old Hollywood” before an explosion of new talent led to the American New Wave of the ’70s. A far more financially successful 1998 adaptation starring Eddie Murphy, which removed all elements of sweeping adventure in favor of family friendly comedy, was released in 1998. An equally successful sequel followed in 2001.

However, aside from a main character who can speak to animals, those later movies contain very little of Lofting’s work, which is bigger, grander, and certainly fit for a movie star looking to launch a new franchise where he gets to wear colorful costumes, travel the world, and interact with all kinds of CGI creatures. At the same time, there’s something to be said about Hollywood eyeing second reboot of a movie that ranks up there with Cleopatra as one of the greatest cautionary tales in industry history. There’s a certain amount of hubris there. Can Robert Downey Jr. launch another movie franchise? Will audiences care about Doctor Dolittle?

Those questions do not have answers yet. But I think we can all agree that Doctor Dolittle is wise to stay far, far away from Star Wars: Episode 9.

Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star as Doctor Dolittle in an adaptation of The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle for Universal. Learn more details about the Robert Downey Jr Doctor Dolittle movie, after the jump.

Stephen Gaghan, who wrote and directed Gold and Syriana, and wrote Rules of Engagement, Traffic, The Alamo and Havoc, is writing and directing the adaptation. Tom Shepherd wrote a previous draft of the script. The project was packaged and sent to studios last week, and Universal won the rights after an intense bidding battle with other studios.

While the books may be good source material for children movie adaptations, it’s hard not to imagine that Robert Downey Jr. isn’t going the same route as an actor like Johnny Depp. I hope I am wrong and let’s all pray that this is better than the Eddie Murphy films released in the late 1990’s. The movie is based on the character from the 1920’s series of children’s books by Hugh Lofting. The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle was the second of Lofting’s Doctor Dolittle books, published in 1922. It is nearly five times as long as the original book, divided into six parts that included illustrations. Here is an official plot description from the book cover:

Together with Jip the Dog, Polynesia the Parrot, and 9-year-old Tommy Stubbins, the good doctor sets off in search of a missing colleague. This Newbery Medal–winning adventure recounts the hunt for Long Arrow, the world’s greatest naturalist, in treks that range from the Mediterranean and South America to the bottom of the sea. Thanks to the doctor’s gift for conversing with animals, the travelers find a solution to every challenge, including a curious encounter with a sea monster and a shipwreck on a mysterious island.

The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, which is http://amzn.to/2nsWB0Davailable on Amazon for around $ 5, won the Newbery Medal for 1923. This isn’t the first time Hollywood has brought Doctor Dolittle to the big screen:

  • Richard Fleischer’s 1967 musical Doctor Dolittle was based on the novels: The Story of Doctor Dolittle, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle and Doctor Dolittle’s Circus. The film was nominated for an Oscar for best picture and won for best original song and visual effects.
  • A second Doctor Dolittle film was released in 1998 starring Eddie Murphy in the titular role, spawning a sequel and three direct-to-DVD sequels starring Kyla Pratt as Dolittle’s daughter Maya, who shares her father and older sister’s gift.
  • The Doctor Dolittle stories have also been adapted into radio series, cartoon shorts, stage adaptations and a direct to video animated movie.

The classic character – who of course can talk to animals – is heading back in a new adventure, named The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.

The Doc was created by Hugh Lofting in the 1920s in a series of children’s books set in the Victorian era.

Rex Harrison played him in the 1967 musical, before Eddie Murphy starred in a new adaptation in 1998, plus its sequel in 2001.

According to Variety, the director of the new effort will be Stephen Gaghan, who most recently directed Matthew McConaughey in Gold.

He has also written the screenplay, after winning a Best Screenplay Oscar for Traffic. He also nabbed an Emmy for an episode of NYPD Blue.

Dr Dolittle clearly has pulling power at the Box Office: with Murphy in the role, the 1998 film managed a hefty $ 294.4 million.

The follow-up scored $ 176.1 million and prompted three direct-to-video follow-ups starring Kyla Pratt.

For now, Downey Jr is working on Avengers: Infinity War, which is due out in May next year.

The blockbuster is currently filming in Edinburgh, parts of which have been closed off and transformed just for Marvel.

Dr Dolittle will mark Downey Jr’s first role outside of Tony Stark and Iron Man since 2014’s The Judge, in which he played Hank Palmer.

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle does not currently have a release date.
