A DOG’S PURPOSE (PG, 100 mins)

Adapted from a bestselling novel by W Bruce Cameron, Lasse Hallstrom’s sentimental, all-American, melodrama tell us that every time a pooch dies its soul and memories are transferred to a newborn puppy. 

The voice in its head is passed on, too, which means that even though the dog in the film has several incarnations its cutesily naive thoughts are always narrated by Josh Gad, sounding exactly as he did when he was Olaf the snowman in Frozen.

In the first half of A Dog’s Purpose the canine hero is raised by a schoolboy and his hard-drinking salesman father in the 1960s. After that, it is reborn as a police dog in 1970s Chicago.

Then it’s a student’s sole companion in the 1980s and finally it belongs to a gruff farmer played by Dennis Quaid. 

The problem which, ahem, dogs the film is that while the loyal hound is naturally devoted to each of its owners, they never really interest the rest of us.

They’re ordinary people with hackneyed, sanitised, stories and the fact that they happen to have a furry pal in the house doesn’t make them any less dull. The repeated doggy deaths may put off young viewers, too.

So what’s the point of A Dog’s Purpose? As the title implies, Gadd’s voiceover keeps posing questions about the meaning of life so you might hope for some profound insights to compensate for the mushy narrative. 

Despite living and dying numerous times, the best our four-legged philosopher (and the five screenwriters) can offer is that loneliness is bad and fun is good. Dog owners may be charmed but they’re also bound to feel that their own pet has more personality than the one on the screen.

UNLOCKED (15, 98 mins)

Stars: Noomi Rapace, Orlando Bloom, Michael Douglas, John Malkovich

Don’t be fooled by the stellar cast of Unlocked. Every one of them may have starred in an award-winning blockbuster in their time but Michael Apted’s muddled film is the kind of derivative, bargain-basement London-based spy thriller that is normally stocked with escapees from EastEnders.

Noomi Rapace is convincingly tough but wholly uncharismatic as a Swedish-accented CIA agent who specialises in interrogating Islamic terrorist suspects.

Her latest assignment is to “unlock” a courier who has just been arrested. But when the job goes pear-shaped she is forced to run, Bourne-style, from her own former colleagues. 

Among the associates who may be friends or foes are her mentor (Michael Douglas), a cockney Afghan-war veteran (Orlando Bloom) and an MI5 liaison (Toni Collette).

John Malkovich enjoys hamming it up as her exasperated boss. Everybody else is taking this silly pot-boiler far too seriously.

General is a very good dog who just wanted to get out of the animal hospital. He plotted his escape and when the time was right, he put his plan into action. You can just feel that sweet taste of freedom hit him as he saunters off into the unknown.

The ten-year-old Great Pyrenees was being held at the Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital in Stafford, Virginia while his family was on vacation, local news outlet WJLA reports. It’s unclear what exactly happened that allowed General to initially push open the door to his cell. It looks like the keys were left in the door. The look on his fellow inmate’s face when he first gets out is priceless. From there, General makes his way through the office leisurely, but always keeping a lookout. He manages to open at least three more doors before finally reaching the parking lot and wandering off to do whatever he pleased.

WJLA initially spread the word of the dog’s brazen escape and asked viewers to help find him. After about 15 hours of freedom, he was found in a nearby neighborhood taking a nap in a stranger’s lawn and has since been reunited with his family.

His owner tells WJLA that General is “a little Houdini,” and he’s always getting through doors. Great Pyrenees are known for being very gentle dogs but not particularly smart. Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogsranks them number 64 out 79 ranks. But that seems flawed. They’re also known to be very stubborn, so maybe they just don’t want to do that stupid crap humans are asking them to do. All we know is that General is smart and now he’s a legend.

A man and his dachshund were talking a stroll in the park when he decided to test out how much his dog actually cared about him. 

Before his fake collapse, the two were connected via the dog lead. 

Without much warning, the man hits the ground, but at the same time, clutches onto his camera phone and continues filming.

He expected his dog to spring into action and attempt in some way to help – but he was wrong. 

The dog appears too occupied exploring the great outdoors, so much so that it carries on walking. 

What makes the clip even funnier, is the fact the dog does turn its head around slightly as the man falls over, but continues on its way. 

The video concludes with the dog getting smaller and smaller as it gets further away before disappearing out of view. 

The clip was uploaded to image sharing site Imgur and has racked up more than 6.5 million views. 

Fans of the video shared their thoughts on the pooch’s reaction. 

One Imgur user said: “My dog does that. I love him but he’s useless.”

Another user tried to get inside the dog’s head, and posted: “Quick! I’ll go get help! However I am already at top speed. Sorry.” 

The video also prompted other owner’s funny dog walking stories. 

One user said: “I was walking my boyfriend’s dog on some trails I didn’t know. I turn my head she’s gone. She had gone home and left me alone in the woods.” 

Someone else commented: “I did this to my dog. He sneezed on my face and went to sleep.” 

Another video which went viral involving a pet involved a cat attempting to make it across a bath full of water. 

The trapped cat makes a few slow movements to judge the distance from one side to the other – but it’s left with only one option in the end.

The fifth and final season of Samurai Jack is going to be darker, tougher, and violent as hell. But there’s one thing it won’t have: dog buttholes.

Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky recently chatted with IGN about the upcoming season, which he said will likely be his last. He said putting Samurai Jack on Adult Swim gave them flexibility to make the show, and to make its fight sequences more mature. He said the violence, as shown in the first clip, is more stylized than Kill Bill-style blood and guts, but he appreciated the freedom to go further than they were able to when the show aired on Cartoon Network. However, they couldn’t get away with everything. Specifically, dog’s butts.

“We drew a dog’s butt. Just like a circle, little asterisks, very innocent, we didn’t think anything of it. We got it back, they’re like, ‘No dog anuses on Adult Swim,’” Tartakovsky said.

As sucky as this is, it’s not entirely surprising. Adult Swim has been known for its inconsistency regarding censorship. There have been plenty of times where the word “shit” was censored on some shows, but not others. You have Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace, the since-cancelled sketch show that featured blackface and winks to its alt-right audience. Then there’s Mr. Pickles, an animated show about a demonic dog that shows him torturing, murdering, and sexually accosting his victims. But no buttholes, so I guess it’s okay?

Sad lack of dog buttholes aside, if early looks are any indication, this is going to be a Samurai Jack the likes of which we haven’t seen before. Season five begins March 11.
