DC's attorney general is suing Michael Saylor for evading $ 25 million worth of taxes between 2005 and 2021.

  • MicroStrategy boss Michael Saylor evaded $ 25 million in District of Columbia taxes, its AG alleges.
  • The bitcoin bull claimed to live in Florida, but Facebook posts showed homes in DC, according to a lawsuit.
  • The AG's office is seeking $ 100 million in unpaid taxes and penalties, the lawsuit published Wednesday said.

MicroStrategy co-founder Michael Saylor has been hit with a lawsuit by the District of Columbia's attorney-general for allegedly evading more than $ 25 million in income taxes.

The lawsuit published Wednesday also names MicroStrategy — the enterprise software maker Saylor ran as CEO until early August — which it claims conspired to help the noted bitcoin bull evade district taxes.

The AG's office alleges Saylor pretended to be a resident of either Florida or Virginia for more than 20 years, when he was actually living in Washington, DC. It noted that he failed to file any income tax return in DC between 2005 and 2021, and that Florida and Virginia have significantly lower tax rates.

"Since at least 2012, Saylor has bragged to his confidants about his successful plan to create the illusion of residing in Florida in order to evade the District's personal income taxes," the lawsuit filing said.

The suit presented screenshots of apparent Facebook posts by Saylor in 2012 as evidence the MicroStrategy executive chairman had lived in several different homes in DC. The posts showcase a luxury penthouse on the Georgetown waterfront that he allegedly spent millions of dollars to renovate, plus yachts docked on the Potomac.

"View from my Georgetown balcony this morning," Saylor wrote on the social-media site in 2012, according to the suit. "Now I just need to finish renovating the apartment so I can move back in."

Saylor's Facebook post included in the tax evasion lawsuit.
A Facebook post included in the DC AG's lawsuit filing.

People who live in Washington, DC for at least 183 days are classified as residents and required to file income tax returns and pay any money due.

The suit also alleges that MicroStrategy knew Saylor was a DC resident but didn't report it to the authorities, meaning the company conspired to help Saylor in the tax avoidance.

"The District of Columbia's claims against the company are false and we will defend aggressively against this over-reach," MicroStrategy told the Financial Times.

Saylor told the FT he lives in Florida and he disagreed with the lawsuit. Insider contacted MicroStrategy for comment from the company and its executive chairman on the allegations, but had not received a reply at time of writing.

The AG's office is seeking to recover unpaid income taxes and penalties from Saylor and his company that it believes could add up to more than $ 100 million.

MicroStrategy shares fell 6.3% Wednesday when the lawsuit was announced, and were down 1.2% Thursday ahead of the opening bell. The stock was trading at just over $ 223 a share at last check.

MicroStrategy spent almost $ 4 billion on bitcoin under Saylor's leadership. He said in April that he considers the stock to be an unofficial spot bitcoin ETF.

Mr Gove said: “Well, one of the things you have now is an opportunity to ask me questions about the deal and of course, we’ll have a debate in the House of Commons.”

The guest went on to remark how MPs would have been reading the deal “alongside their Christmas turkey” and insisted the mood of those he had heard from was that this is a “good deal.”

“But of course we’re more than happy to answer any specific questions about aspects of it,” Mr Gove continued, encouraging members of the public to also ask questions.

Asked by the host why Parliament hadn’t been given two days, the guest insisted: “We’re having full scrutiny in the sense of the extended parliamentary day.

“But again, we’ve been debating Brexit for a long time now and I think most Members of Parliament understand the clear instruction given by the general election which was to get it [Brexit] done.”

However, others disagreed: “@BBCBreakfast @RobertJenrick very clear and succinct replies from the Mp. Usual aggression from Charlie most unhelpful and rude.”

“For goodness sake Charlie, stop the aggressive *gotcha* closed questions…Covid Marshalls …& LISTEN to the rational answer!” Another fumed.

While one added: “@BBCBreakfast cringeworthy Charlie this morning asking the same repetitive questions that someone cant and won’t answer – pointless.”

‘Roy Moore is in hiding’: Alabama GOP candidate is dodging the spotlight 2 days before the election https://briefnews.eu/roy-moore-is-in-hiding-alabama-gop-candidate-is-dodging-the-spotlight-2-days-before-the-election/ https://briefnews.eu/roy-moore-is-in-hiding-alabama-gop-candidate-is-dodging-the-spotlight-2-days-before-the-election/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2017 21:57:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roy-moore-is-in-hiding-alabama-gop-candidate-is-dodging-the-spotlight-2-days-before-the-election/ Roy MooreJoe Raedle/Getty Images

  • Roy Moore has cut back on public campaign appearances since numerous women accused him of sexual misconduct when they were teenagers.
  • Meanwhile, Moore has pushed back against the allegations on social media.
  • Dodging the mainstream spotlight is nothing new to Moore.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore has been a rare sight on the traditional campaign trail in the days ahead of a critical U.S. Senate race. He’s appeared at only a handful of rallies in front of friendly audiences and steadfastly has shunned reporters from the mainstream media.

Moore’s past campaigns have never been heavy on public appearances, but his relative absence from the spotlight this time has been noticeable.

Moore has focused on meeting with small groups of supporters and an aggressive social media campaign out of camera range as he tries to win Tuesday’s election against Democrat Doug Jones – a contest that was supposed to be an easy GOP victory – until November, when a number of women stepped forward to accuse Moore of engaging in sexual misconduct when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers.

Moore has denied the allegations and refuses to back down.

Dodging the mainstream spotlight is classic Roy Moore, according to Alabama campaign consultant David Mowery. Moore did the same when he campaigned for Alabama Supreme Court chief justice in 2012, when he defeated Mowery’s client, Democrat Bob Vance.

“We never knew where he was and then we’d get a picture from somebody showing us some church marquee saying, ‘Judge Moore is here on Saturday,'” Mowery recalled. “He’s out there, he’s just with his base, and usually in small events.”

Moore’s stealth effort has left Jones resorting to mockery as the Democrat crisscrosses the state trying to pull an upset in Tuesday’s special election, buoyed by the possibility that enough Republicans will abandon the 70-year-old Moore in the wake of the allegations.

“Roy Moore is in hiding. He’s kind of like the groundhog. He comes out every so often to see if he can see his shadow,” Jones said Saturday in Selma during one of several stops for the Democrat this weekend.

Mowery said the temptation is to obsess too much over what Moore is doing.

“You lose the forest for the trees worrying over the opponent,” he said. “It wasn’t like we were competing over the same voters anyway.”

“We were going after the Chamber of Commerce, country club, First Methodist kind of Republicans … not the fundamentalists and the snake handlers. We were never going to get them anyway, and neither is Doug,” Mowery said.

Ben DuPre, a campaign spokesman, said Moore is not holding back.

“He’s talking to voters. We are getting the message out any way that we can. I know you are the old media and you get offended when we don’t talk to you, but we’ve got Twitter. We’ve got Facebook. He’s doing interviews. He’s doing radio.”

Moore’s campaign is actively pushing his narrative on social media and in press releases. He’s also drawing headlines with the help of President Donald Trump, who came to the Florida Panhandle on Friday night and has lined up a recorded telephone call from the president that will start being delivered to Alabama voters on Monday.

Moore has never been conventional. He has built a large following among some evangelical voters from two failed gambits: upholding a display of the Ten Commandments in a state building and trying to block same-sex marriage in Alabama. He was tossed from office in both instances.

Moore plans to close out his campaign Monday night with another large rally featuring former Trump campaign guru Stephen Bannon.

Bill Stewart, the former chairman of the political science department at the University of Alabama, said Moore appears to be banking on his evangelical base, as well as the state’s overwhelming tendency to vote Republican, to carry him to victory on Tuesday.

Republicans in Alabama tend to clear 60 percent of the vote — though Moore has struggled in his previous races to reach that number — and voters here haven’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1992.

Stewart said he can’t remember a candidate ever virtually “disappearing from public view” the way Moore has. Still, he said Moore has little to gain but “a lot to lose” by making a mistake.

“There may be a method in his madness,” Stewart said.

Is austerity leaving Britain wide open to attack? Tories keep dodging the question https://briefnews.eu/is-austerity-leaving-britain-wide-open-to-attack-tories-keep-dodging-the-question/ https://briefnews.eu/is-austerity-leaving-britain-wide-open-to-attack-tories-keep-dodging-the-question/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 18:53:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-austerity-leaving-britain-wide-open-to-attack-tories-keep-dodging-the-question/

The UK government plans to scrap naval ships and slash 1,000 Royal Marines despite Downing Street’s public denial. Massive cuts to the navy are expected as the Ministry of Defence (MoD) looks to save £30 billion ($ 27 billion).

Asked directly on Monday whether 1,000 Royal Marines will be axed as a result of the plans, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon refused to answer.

The rumored cost cutting measures come as military experts say Britain cannot protect itself from a surprise attack from Russia or China because it has not adapted to modern warfare standards.

General Sir Richard Barrons is urging the Government to boost funding for the British Armed Forces.

Without that investment, the former head of the Joint Forces Command said the UK will lag behind other world powers which are rapidly advancing their cyber war tech programmes.

Barrons told BBC Radio 4’s Today program: “Nobody in Government is having the profoundly important debate that we need to have about how the world is changing and how the UK is at greater risk and what we need to do in the future.”

“It’s very straightforward – the risk today and more so in the future is that countries like Russia and China already have capability that could hold the UK homeland at military risk at very short notice. We can’t really deal with that.

“And we also run the risk in the future for British citizens or our friends abroad would be in great jeopardy and need military help and we would have removed our ability to help them and out place in the world would be much diminished.”

Barrons said the world is becoming more “challenging, unstable and unpredictable.”

“I am content that Mr Fallon understands the seriousness of these proposals to Plymouth,” he told the Plymouth Herald.

“He has visited Defence in Plymouth a number of times – he absolutely gets the importance of Defence to our City, and is fully aware of my views on these proposals. I will work as hard as I ever do, to make sure that these proposals do not become reality in Plymouth.”

Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP Luke Pollard has started a petition to save the ships which already garnered 3,000 signatures.

“Scrapping all the Royal Navy’s amphibious assault ships would be the biggest betrayal of Devonport by any Government in a generation,” said Pollard.

“I want people from all across the UK who believe in preserving both the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, and our national security, to sign the petition and write to their local MP urging them to sign EDM 391.”

Theresa May’s office told the Daily Mail the Government is “committed to providing the Armed Forces what they need to protect this country’s interests.”

OPCW discredits itself by dodging proper Syria chemical attack probe – Moscow https://briefnews.eu/opcw-discredits-itself-by-dodging-proper-syria-chemical-attack-probe-moscow/ https://briefnews.eu/opcw-discredits-itself-by-dodging-proper-syria-chemical-attack-probe-moscow/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 01:12:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/opcw-discredits-itself-by-dodging-proper-syria-chemical-attack-probe-moscow/ Russia has demanded the immediate dispatch of an independent fact-finding mission to the site of last month’s chemical incident in Idlib and the airbase from where the attack was allegedly launched, noting that constant delays discredit the OPCW and render its mandate irrelevant.

Over 80 people were killed and 200 others injured on April 4, in an alleged sarin gas incident at Khan Shaykhun in Syria’s Idlib province. Backed by their allies, Washington rushed to blame Damascus based on open-source intelligence and three days later, carried out a massive cruise missile strike on Syria’s Shayrat Airbase in the Homs Governorate.

Damascus strongly denied responsibility, saying it did not possess or use chemical weapons, and that the Syrian Air Force destroyed a facility where the militants apparently stored nerve gas.

Moscow and Damascus have condemned Washington’s unilateral actions, insisting on a proper investigation into the Idlib attack. And while Russia has repeatedly insisted on launching an independent international probe into the tragic episode, Paris promptly prepared its own report which echoed the US assertion that Damascus was responsible for the attack.

The Syrian government, who is a signatory to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), destroyed its 1,300-ton chemical weapons arsenal – except for the stockpiles located in the rebel and terrorist-controlled areas – under UN supervision following a deal brokered by Moscow and Washington in 2013.

On May 23, the UN Security Council once again discussed the chemical attack in Idlib. Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN disarmament, chief told the Security Council that planning for the fact-finding mission to the site was “already underway,” but no date has yet been set, as the UN is allegedly working to confirm security assurances needed to dispatch an international team of experts.

Moscow reminded the international community that in order to draw any reliable conclusions, investigators should first visit the site of the incident and the Syrian airbase – which Damascus had agreed to provide free and safe access to, both before and after the facility was bombed by 59 US Tomahawk missiles.

“It looks like no one is in a hurry to go to Khan Shaykhun for verification of the details of a case as resounding as this one,” Russia’s foreign ministry said. Moscow also questioned why investigators would refuse to visit the Shayrat Airbase, which, according to the anti-Damascus coalition, was used to launch the chemical attack.

“We would like to emphasize that in early April, Damascus provided official guarantees for safe access there for the experts of the OPCW mission to establish the facts of the use of chemical weapons in Syria,” the ministry said in a statement.

It’s “really saddening” that OPCW continues to delay its investigation citing unfavorable security conditions, the ministry added. “All the prerequisites for organizing a visit in terms of security requirements and fulfillment of obligations under the Convention have been established.”

Moscow has demanded that an international team of experts be sent immediately, emphasizing that further delays would discredit OPCW’s investigative mechanism.

“Further evasion of a full-fledged investigation will call into question the competence of Joint OPCW-UN and OPCW Fact-Finding missions and the relevance of their further existence,” the foreign ministry said.

Moscow noted that the US, UK, and France once against sought to “impart a marked anti-Assad and anti-Russian taint” to this week’s discussion at the Security Council.

“It once again confirmed that the ‘denouncers’ of Damascus are not interested in establishing the truth in the issue as crucial as who stood behind the possible use of sarin in the Syrian province of Idlib on April 4,” the ministry said.

“Representatives of the US, UK, and France fiercely resist attempts to find out how justified is their ‘in absentia’ verdict of an allegedly incontestable responsibility of the Bashar al-Assad’s government in that chemical attack in the settlement of Khan Shaykhun.”

Congressman is righteously booed after dodging a young girl’s simple question about science https://briefnews.eu/congressman-is-righteously-booed-after-dodging-a-young-girls-simple-question-about-science/ https://briefnews.eu/congressman-is-righteously-booed-after-dodging-a-young-girls-simple-question-about-science/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 21:19:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/congressman-is-righteously-booed-after-dodging-a-young-girls-simple-question-about-science/

One hour into a loud, contentious town hall meeting in his home state of Utah, Congressman Jason Chaffetz was asked two simple questions by a young girl named Hannah Bradshaw. The first was about the environment: “What are you doing to help protect our water and air for our generations and my kids’ generations?” The second was just a bit more broad: “Do you believe in science?”

Asking the sitting congressman if he believes in science is sadly a relevant question. Chaffetz has called global warming “a farce,” and just this week co-sponsored a bill to abolish the Department of Education. He also recently proposed a bill that would have transferred ownership of federal public lands to the states, making them easier to sell. (He swiftly withdrew that bill after it sparked public outrage.)

So it’s not surprising that, instead of saying anything remotely resembling the words “I believe in science,” Chaffetz deflected hard enough to cause whiplash. Luckily, the crowd wasn’t having it. One woman in particular can be heard loudly repeating the words “ANSWER THE QUESTION,” and so Chaffetz was goaded into responding to Bradshaw.

Chaffetz started with an empty statement that only a career politician could think would play well in front of a high school auditorium packed to the brim with frothing citizens: “What is thrown into our air, what is thrown into our water, obviously has an effect on our environment.” He was then met with a holy chorus of boos when he said he supported an “all of the above energy strategy” that includes coal as “an important part of that future.”

That’s where the clip above ends, but Chaffetz didn’t stop there. The Salt Lake Tribune live-streamed the entire event on Facebook, and if you pick up the exchange over there you’ll be treated to Chaffetz continuing to ignore Bradshaw’s questions while propping up muddy arguments like electric cars being dirty — “There’s a lot of people who want to move to electricity. Well how in the world do you think electricity is generated?” — and how solar farms are destroying wildlife.

Chaffetz endured another 15 minutes of the town hall before literally being booed off the stage.
