With just one decision, Shaun and Lea’s lives were forever changed on Monday’s Good Doctor.

When we last left off, Lea had just told Shaun that she was pregnant — and her portrayer, Paige Spara, tells TVLine that she was was particularly intrigued by the relationship twist. “I was excited to explore how Lea and Shaun would handle such abrupt news,” she tells TVLine. “Becoming pregnant has so many levels of emotions one goes through with themself and with their partner. To dive into something so deeply personal and life-changing is [compelling].”

In the aftermath of the big reveal, the relatively new couple spent much of Season 4’s 12th installment, “Teeny Blue Eyes,” contemplating whether or not they were capable of bringing a child into this world. Lea talked through her doubts, first with Claire, then with Shaun, in a pair of delicate scenes, and realized that Shaun’s ASD, and whether it could potentially be inherited by their offspring, was not a determining factor in her decision.

“I wanted to make sure I was speaking to all of the emotions Lea was feeling,” Spara says, which she talked through with both Freddie Highmore and executive producer David Shore. “I feel that’s important to convey — that all of these emotions can exist at the same time… [Lea] is genuinely trying to process not only her emotions, but what’s best for the baby and Shaun’s life as well.”

The Good Doctor 4x12 - Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun MurphyShaun, meanwhile, broke the news to Dr. Glassman. The hospital head was happy for the young couple, but warned his surrogate son that having a child changes everything. Shaun also had some one-on-one time with Claire, who assured him that he’d adapt and grow to become a fantastic father, just like he did to become a surgeon.

What followed was an especially heavy moment between Shaun and Lea. They reconvened at their apartment and discussed their options moving forward. They ran down their respective lists of pros and cons, and acknowledged how complicated it would be to start a family. “I have so many reasons to do this… and so many doubts,” Lea explained. “I’m just scared, Shaun. But if we’re both having doubts, then maybe now isn’t the right time?” Shaun said “OK,” and took his girlfriend’s hand. There was nothing else that needed to be said in that moment. A decision had been made.

The Good Doctor 4x12 - Paige Spara as Lea Dilallo“David Shore explored both Lea and Shaun’s emotions without it ever feeling unbalanced,” Spara says. She also credits the episode’s director, Rebecca Moline, for how this particular scene turned out. Moline was there “to navigate all the complexities we were trying to convey,” and “created such a safe space.” Along with Highmore, “Rebecca allowed me to find [what Lea was feeling] and hear my take on it first, respectfully. The wonderful thing about that is it creates an encouraging atmosphere… I felt very supported and encouraged by those two.”

A trip to a women’s health clinic ultimately resulted in a change of heart. In the episode’s closing moments, Lea decided that she couldn’t go through with the abortion.

“I spent all day reminding myself of all the reasons why this was a good idea, but now that it’s actually happening, it doesn’t make me feel any better,” she said. “It just makes me feel really sad. Maybe it’s not the right time, but will it ever be?”

With Shaun’s support, Lea decided to keep the baby — and together, they’d start a family. As for how the series will navigate Lea’s pregnancy in subsequent episodes, Spara would only say this: “In true Lea-and-Shaun form, we will be covering the experience true to the foundation of their relationship, which is [with] total honesty.”

In a second, we’ll want to know what you thought of the episode — but first, a couple of other major developments worth discussing…

The Good Doctor 4x12 - Alex Park and Morgan Reznick Kiss* When Park admitted he had feelings for Morgan, she told him to pack his things and move out of her apartment. As he headed out, she gave him one last chance to admit he was just messing with her, but he couldn’t do that. His feelings are true. That’s when she told him it was good they were no longer roommates and kissed him! “This is a one-time thing… unless I change my mind,” she said. “So consider that an incentive.”

The Good Doctor 4x12 - Brian Marc as Dr. Enrique Guerin* Another newbie dropped out of the surgical program: At the end of the hour, Enrique decided he wasn’t O.R. material. He’d continue his residency at Johns Hopkins, where they’ll train him to head out into the world and help those in needy areas — much more his speed. Before he left, Dr. Guerin told Claire that she’s always doing so much for other people, and she needs to do something for herself every now and then. And so Claire returned home, climbed into bed and gathered information on a potential trip to Paris.

Kate Garraway’s heartbreak as she reveals doctors won’t let her see or hug husband Derek https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraways-heartbreak-as-she-reveals-doctors-wont-let-her-see-or-hug-husband-derek/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraways-heartbreak-as-she-reveals-doctors-wont-let-her-see-or-hug-husband-derek/#respond Wed, 08 Jul 2020 18:52:46 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraways-heartbreak-as-she-reveals-doctors-wont-let-her-see-or-hug-husband-derek/

Kate Garraway has been absent from presenting Good Morning Britain for the last few months after her husband tested positive for coronavirus. Derek Draper is one of many who is still fighting for his life after he was initially hospitalised in April when his condition deteriorated. He was then placed in a coma – and two months later, it appears he has been taken out of the medically induced state as he continues to fight his way back to consciousness. Kate appeared on the ITV breakfast show this morning to speak about Derek’s progress, and she revealed she has not been able to see her husband in person for at least 100 days.

When asked by Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid whether she has been able to go and see Derek in hospital, she said: “So I’m really fighting to be able to do that, but respectful of what we all have to observe.

“The hospital where he is is now Covid free, that is a massive thing for them, they have lots of very vulnerable people in there who are being treated for other things, who have very serious operations, so that have to protect everyone there.

“So I’m hoping. I did make the point to the doctor: ‘You can now shop in Primark, surely I can give him a hug?’

“And they say: ‘We get it, but we have to be safe.’ It’s not their decision, it’s much higher up,” she added.

“They have to be able to make things work and in the meantime I feel like we’re all having to go through this, but yes this is definitely something that I will hopefully be able to do.”

Kate is set to return to the ITV studio on Monday as Piers and Susanna take leave for the summer holidays.

But she may not be present all the time depending on how Derek is doing.

“I think there’s been so many different stages,” Kate said looking back.

“When he went into hospital, I’ve got some texts from him saying: ‘I’m definitely not going to die, I’m getting better, show this picture to the children, tell them I’m doing great…’

“There was a feeling of terror and then suddenly it escalated and they were saying it’s all about the lungs… and then suddenly it became everything, kidney fail, liver fail, heart, everything,” she added.

“Each stage it’s been a new terror and just when I thought we were moving forward then suddenly we know it can affect your body everywhere, nerves, everything.”

“We’ll never give up and I know the NHS will never give up,” she added.

Kate also updated viewers on Derek’s current condition: “About him and the coma for starters, it’s a strange word coma, he was induced into the coma because it was a way of resting the lungs when he had very acute Covid, of course now they’re no longer keeping him in the Coma, he sort of can’t wake up.

“There’s two types of coma – there’s the one we think of as vegetative coma, where someone’s completely unconscious, you know, you could stab them and they wouldn’t react.

“And there’s where Derek is which is a minimum state of consciousness.

“So, wonderfully his eyes are opening but we have no real knowledge of what he can see or hear and feel.”

“It is a very desperate situation, it’s very difficult,” the TV and radio presenter commented.

“Of course, there’s fantastic hope that he’s still alive. The doctors do keep saying it is a miracle he’s still alive.”

Kate then revealed how she had been told by medical experts that Derek wasn’t “going to make it” six times.

“He’s been very, very sick.

“The problem is, is that it’s a new disease which nobody knows, so there’s no data.

“His lungs are starting to recover a little bit, his kidneys are doing better, his liver is doing better. They don’t know how much better he can get.

“There is just nothing he can compare it with,” Kate said.

Viewers sent in their well-wishes for Kate and her family.

“You have the love and support of so many Kate. You can do this! Welcome back. Made me cry this morning,” one wrote online.

Someone else added: “Kate Garraway, you are a true inspiration. You have been so strong throughout all of this. You are one of the most down-to-earth people that I know. I wish there was more that I could say, but I can do is give you virtual hugs.”

“That’s great news. I thoroughly enjoy@kategarraway and @benshephard together presenting the show. Iook forward to watching next Monday,” a fan added.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

The Good Doctor‘s Shaun doesn’t handle heartbreak well. Case in point: The surgical resident was ready to take a bat to Lea’s Gran Torino in the closing moments of Monday’s episode.

Of course, Shaun had inspiration for his sudden, out-of-character impulse. Beforehand, he and Claire treated Finn, a patient with a rare form of dwarfism who was revealed to be a bit of a philanderer. When Finn’s longtime girlfriend found out about his side piece, she took it out on his Porsche.

“I want to hurt you the way you hurt me,” Shaun told Lea. But ultimately, he couldn’t bring himself to give the classic car a beatdown. Instead, he chose to hurt Lea with his words, which allowed him to voice everything he’d been feeling since she implied that she can’t be with him because he has autism.

the good doctor season 3 episode 18 lea“You acted like you cared about me, but you don’t even respect me,” he wailed. “You’re flaky, and you can’t keep a boyfriend. And you can’t keep a job. And no one likes you. And you’re going to end up alone, and you deserve it, because you’re a superficial, selfish and prejudiced person!” (Hell of a performance by Freddie Highmore!)

Shaun’s decision to confront Lea came in an episode where he struggled to hold it together, and nearly got himself removed from Melendez’s team by taking out his frustrations on Claire and his boss. Melendez, who was able to empathize with Shaun, advised the resident to continue to come to work and pretend everything is fine until, eventually, he’s not pretending anymore. Finn, meanwhile, encouraged Dr. Murphy to put himself out there and meet someone new. He even tried to set the surgeon up with a nurse named Julie. Shaun and Julie eventually ran into each other at a nearby bar, but Shaun didn’t seem interested. He left to go pummel Lea’s car.

the good doctor season 3 episode 18 melendez claireClaire also worked through her own emotions this week, which led to a realization we all saw coming. She started dating Dash, but something just… didn’t feel right. She kept her distance and held out as long she could before their first kiss. Toward the end of the episode, Melendez congratulated Claire on a job well done with Finn, and it made her feel a certain way. “Your commitment to your patients reminds me of why I got into medicine,” he said. “Being around you makes me a better surgeon… a better person.” Later, during a late-night therapy sesh, Claire admitted to herself that she’s falling in love with Melendez.

The Good Doctor Season 3 Episode 18 Morgan ReznickThis was also a big week for Morgan, who made a decision that could end her medical career in the not-too-distant future. Her rheumatoid arthritis has worsened, and the medicine that Glassman prescribed to her hasn’t helped, not even a little. Before scrubbing in on a double amputation, Morgan revealed her RA diagnosis to Lim, then told the chief that this would be her last surgery. Soon after, though, she revealed to Glassman that she’s changed her mind. She wants to continue to pursue a surgical career, even if it cripples her. She intends to undergo synovectomy, a procedure to remove the joint linings in her fingers that would resolve her pain for up to 10 years, before every joint eventually becomes mangled and deformed. Glassman encouraged Morgan to pursue another field rather than jeopardize her future, but there was no getting through to her at this time.

Warning: The following contains spoilers from the Feb. 24 episode of The Good Doctor.

The Good Doctor reached a moment of clarity on Monday, in an episode that will forever change the Freddie Highmore-led medical drama.

In the antepenultimate episode of Season 3, Shaun admitted to himself that while he did in fact love his ex-girlfriend Carly, the person that he wants to be with is Lea. But when he confessed his love to his best friend and said that he wanted to be her boyfriend, her response was not what he had hoped it would be — at least not entirely.

“I love you, too,” she said. “But you know me. I am selfish, and I am so, so needy… I am a total mess,” and “you need things a certain way.” That’s when Shaun posed a difficult (and truly heartbreaking) question: “Because I have autism?” he asked. “You don’t want to be my girlfriend because I have autism?” Lea couldn’t bring herself to answer. Overcome with emotion, she walked out of the apartment without saying another word, as a single tear dropped from Shaun’s eye.

In separate interviews, TVLine spoke with Highmore (who also directed the episode), as well as his co-star, Paige Spara, about that pivotal Shaun/Lea moment and where the series’ central couple goes from here.

TVLINE | Freddie, this is the second episode you’ve had the chance to direct, following Daniel Dae Kim’s Season 2 debut. What was different about this experience from your last?
HIGHMORE |  Last year, it was really exciting to introduce Dr. Han, and to kick the end of the season off in a new direction. This was a little bit [different]. You had this one especially big moment [at the end of the episode between Shaun and Lea] that was a long time coming.

TVLINE | Paige, when did it dawn on you just how big of a moment this was in the Shaun/Lea relationship? There’s really no turning back after that final scene…
SPARA | When it finally hit me differently was actually when we were rehearsing the scene… I couldn’t say [the words] without getting emotional, and that’s never happened to me before. Then I was nervous because I was, like, “Okay, is that going to happen every take?”

the good doctor season 3 episode 16 shaun freddie highmoreTVLINE | It must have been special to have Freddie direct this particular episode. Did the two of you take a second to acknowledge the significance of this one, and what it means for your characters moving forward?
SPARA | Yeah, absolutely. You know, he’s such a great director and partner to have because he’s so generous with his time, and he really gives you space to kind of understand this pain individually and what it means for you, and then he’s able to go at it from that angle, giving you that emotional freedom to kind of feel what you need to feel for that scene, and then he’ll work around that. Toward the end of the scene, it was even hard for me to say the lines.

TVLINE | It sounds like the scene was ultimately shaped by the conversation.
SPARA | It was originally written, “I’m so sorry, Shaun,” and then I kiss his cheek and walk away.

TVLINE | But instead it was just—
SPARA | … Just look at him and convey however you feel to Shaun in that moment, and walk away when you feel like you need to walk away. And to get that freedom, especially with network TV, is very rare… and the fact that [Freddie] knew what that scene entailed and what it called for, and actually gave me permission to do that, that was huge. I feel like it made the scene what it was actually supposed to be about, yet relatable to anyone who has dealt with such a hard conversation.

TVLINE | It sounds like Freddie was able to construct the scene in a way that might not have happened had you been in the hands of a different director.
SPARA | Absolutely. Freddie [has] such a curious mind when it comes to relationship dynamics and why things are the way they are, and he can pull from that curiosity and apply it to [the scene], as opposed to just getting the take, getting the boxes checked. It’s never about that for him. His work always… comes from a place of openness and curiosity, and I think that is just so needed, especially for [relationship drama], because, you know, what the f—k are relationships? They’re so f—king confusing…

TVLINE | Freddie, what stood out to you when you first read the script?
HIGHMORE | It’s always much more interesting to leave things unsaid, or leave things hinted at when one can, instead of being overly explicit. The last scene is an example of that. [Executive producer] David Shore is aware of that, and [fellow EP] David Hoselton, the writer on this episode, [does] such a good job of making those emotional moments land without them feeling overwritten.

TVLINE | What did you make of Lea’s inability to respond when Shaun asked if his autism is preventing them from being together?
HIGHMORE | I think that Shaun has hit on a horrible truth that Lea has perhaps not thought about before this moment. Her lack of response… at least signals that there’s something [to] what Shaun is saying.

TVLINE | Paige, what is your take on Lea’s response (or lack thereof)? Was she reckoning with this horrible truth, as Freddie suggested? Was she too overwhelmed to get out words?
SPARA | I think it was just a cluster of both of those [things]… Lea does love Shaun. Lea does have a bond with Shaun. That would be her person. However, would she be the person for him? I can’t be selfish in this moment and just say, “I love you. Let’s give this a shot.” There are so many other outside factors that are at play here, and… it’s this uncomfortable reckoning of being responsible for someone else, not just under the umbrella of love, but in a different way for someone else’s wellbeing… and I think that hit her in that moment. That’s why it’s just so overwhelming [and] a bit confusing.

the good doctor season 3 episode 16 lea paige sparaTVLINE | What sort of thoughts do you think are racing through Lea’s mind?
HIGHMORE | I think there’s a part of her that sort of hates herself in this moment. She feels that Shaun is the person that she should be with, and she recognizes that they’ve got this bond, or that they share these kindred spirits, but for whatever reason — and perhaps it has to do with the question that Shaun asks — she just can’t commit to [him], and she doesn’t understand that about herself. She’s questioning whether she’s a good person for even thinking these things or having those thoughts in her head.
SPARA | I think she hates the fact that she is feeling this kind of way, and she’s looking in the eye of this [man] that love her, and she just doesn’t know what to do with it. What does it mean and where [does] it fit in her life and in his life? … I think it’s really hard for her to not know that answer in that moment. And it’s also scary because even when she looks ahead, she still doesn’t see an answer, and then she’s just feeling very, very vulnerable and also admitting the love that she has.

TVLINE | How do you expect the audience to react to Lea’s silence?
HIGHMORE | One of the really important things [to remember], and hopefully that comes across about this last scene, is [that the audience shouldn’t hate Lea] for feeling the way that she feels. She isn’t prejudiced toward Shaun because he has autism. It’s not as simple as that.

TVLINE | Moving forward, has Shaun lost hope that he’ll ever be with Lea?
HIGHMORE | He’s a pretty dogged person, so he doesn’t see this as being… something that they can never get past, or discuss to try and understand [Lea’s feelings] on a deeper level.

TVLINE | Where do we pick up in the following episode?
SPARA | You’ll find these characters addressing that conversation and addressing the questions that were brought up… We will see Shaun handle it in his way, Lea handle it in her way, and when those two ways come together, we’ll actually see why Lea [was] hesitant in the first place.

RELATED STORIES

The Good Doctor this week carefully peeled back the layers of Morgan’s hardened exterior (though not too much) to reveal a woman who so desperately wanted her mother’s approval.

While Shaun was focused on taking Carly to “paradise,” Morgan was hard at work, determined to save the life of her difficult-to-please parent: famed painter Caroline Reznick (Smallville‘s Annette O’Toole), who was admitted to St. Bonaventure with potentially fatal clusters of small blood vessels in the brain. It was her daughter who ultimately convinced Glassman to return to the operating room and perform the minimally invasive (but highly experimental) procedure that saved Caroline’s life, but at the end of the hour, Mom still couldn’t bring herself to admit that she was proud of her daughter and her accomplishments as a doctor.

Along the way, Morgan also reconnected with her brother Ariel (Downton Abbey‘s Allen Leech), a noted sculptor who’d always been tight with Mom, but not with his sister. Below, Morgan’s portrayer, actress Fiona Gubelmann, dishes on the Reznick-centric hour and reveals which scene was most difficult to shoot.

TVLINE | Morgan is hurt because she hasn’t lived up to her mother’s standards. But why did she lie to her friends and colleagues about who her family really was?
Morgan is very guarded. She doesn’t like to be vulnerable. She doesn’t want to share [her pain] with her coworkers because she doesn’t want them to see that side of her… She describes her family in a way that she wants them to be. Claire kind of calls her out on that, and when she does, Morgan has the realization that, yeah, that’s what she’s been doing. That’s her way of coping.

TVLINE | So much of the first half of the season was about Morgan getting Claire to open up about Breeze’s death and preventing her from coworker from spiraling out of control. In this episode, the tables were turned, and it was Claire who had to keep Morgan at bay when her feelings toward Mom threatened to clout her medical judgment. What was it like getting to play that dynamic in reverse?
It was so much fun. We have seen Morgan grow and change over the course of her relationship with Claire, [and] they’ve started to rub off on each other a bit. This whole season [has been about] getting to find the moments in which Morgan is vulnerable and a bit softer — and it’s a fine line: I have to make sure that I don’t get too soft and play Morgan with too much heart, because [then she becomes] Claire. But it’s also been really great to get to see Antonia [Thomas] bring a bit of edge to [Claire]. She’s such a talented actress, and getting to see all the different levels and choices that she brings and makes, it’s been really exciting.

TVLINE | Talk to me a bit about what it was like shooting that scene where Morgan induced Caroline’s seizure by recounting painful childhood memories, and eventually resorting to reading criticism of her Mom’s life work.
'The Good Doctor' 3x13: Morgan and Caroline - Seizure SceneI haven’t seen the scene yet, and I’m a little anxious to watch it… Even just thinking about it now gets me a bit emotional. To put yourself in a situation where you’re torturing someone, and you know it’s going to help them, but it’s still hurting them… Just putting myself in that emotional state was very challenging, and embracing her at the end of it was just so hard to do. But I was so lucky to work with Annette O’Toole, who is such a talented actress, and Doris Egan, who wrote the script, is so brilliant. It was such a beautifully layered scene with all these incredible moments.

TVLINE | Which scene was most difficult to shoot: When Morgan provoked Caroline’s seizure, or when Caroline tells Morgan that she owes her everything, but can’t bring herself to admit that she’s proud of her daughter?
'The Good Doctor' 3x13 - Morgan and Caroline Reznick - "Our Little Plotter" SceneI would say the scene where Morgan triggered the seizure was harder, because that’s such an emotional journey. She’s just trying to jab and poke at her, but then there’s a switch that happens and Morgan gets very upset. Mom is having a seizure and Morgan is doing everything she can to save and protect her, and she has to nurture and take care of her mother in a way that her mother has never done for her before. And her mother is also in this extremely vulnerable position, which is heartbreaking. But the scene [at the end] where she calls me the “little plotter” broke my heart. Morgan has this extreme high — this moment where she feels like she has finally gained her mother’s acceptance, only to have it ripped away from her in such a cold way. Both [of those scenes] were pretty sad and not fun to shoot. [Laughs]

TVLINE | Correct me if I’m wrong, but Morgan never reveals to Caroline that she has inherited her rheumatoid arthritis…
Correct.

TVLINE | Might we see more of Caroline and Ariel this season?
'The Good Doctor' 3x13 - Morgan and ArielThe door is definitely left open there. Even though Morgan and Ariel’s relationship seems to have shifted and been slightly repaired, I think that there’s a lot to explore between Morgan and her brother. And then in terms of Morgan and her mother, I think there’s a lot more work that can be done.

TVLINE | Now that Morgan has been able to identify that her competitive nature stems from her need to be compete with her brother, might we see a change in her demeanor moving forward?
Oh, definitely not. [Laughs] At the end of the day, Morgan is who she is, so that’s always going to be there, and she has other things that she’s battling with right now… She’s a very competitive, driven woman, and she enjoys the competition to some extent. We’ve never seen Morgan be so competitive that she does something unethical to take out one of her competitors, and she’s also always been completely forthright and honest about the fact that she’s competitive, so I don’t think she views that as something wrong.

TVLINE | What can you tease about Morgan’s trajectory in the last five episodes of the season?
It’s gonna be a pretty rocky road for Morgan through the end of the season — so much so that I wonder about Morgan’s future, and I think it’s going to be a really exciting, edge-of-your-seat ride.

The Good Doctor’s Antonia Thomas Reacts to That Fatal Twist: ‘It’s a Complicated Cocktail of Emotions’ https://briefnews.eu/the-good-doctors-antonia-thomas-reacts-to-that-fatal-twist-its-a-complicated-cocktail-of-emotions/ https://briefnews.eu/the-good-doctors-antonia-thomas-reacts-to-that-fatal-twist-its-a-complicated-cocktail-of-emotions/#respond Tue, 08 Oct 2019 11:23:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-good-doctors-antonia-thomas-reacts-to-that-fatal-twist-its-a-complicated-cocktail-of-emotions/

Warning: The following interview contains spoilers about Season 3, Episode 3 of The Good Doctor.

The Good Doctor‘s Claire suffered a major loss on Monday — and it wasn’t a patient. After successfully completing her first surgery, Dr. Browne received a life-changing phone call: Her alcoholic mom Breeze (played since Season 1 by Sharon Leal) died in a drunk-driving accident after getting her hands on the one bottle of champagne that Claire kept in her apartment.

Below, Claire’s portrayer, Antonia Thomas, walks us through that intense final scene and previews how Breeze’s death will impact her character moving forward.

TVLINE | What was it like shooting those final scenes between Claire and Breeze, knowing that this was Sharon Leal’s last episode?
I loved working with her, but it was tricky. I was very conscious of not playing the ending before the ending. Knowing this was going to be her last episode… made it all the more sad every single time you saw them take a step forward and connect.

TVLINE | When you first read that last scene at the crash site, were you at all surprised that Claire walked up to the car and saw Breeze in the driver’s seat? In most shows, you tend to see the next of kin arrive after the victim has been removed from the wreckage.
It was totally shocking. I think most of the time somebody is lucky enough to not have to see that, but in this version of events, it was playing the reality of it. She got there just after it happened, and maybe it’s a crime scene, so yeah, totally shocking.

TVLINE | How would you describe what Claire is feeling in that moment? Is she completely numb to what’s happened?
It’s a mixture of things. Yes, I think she is numb to what has happened. But also, it has been such a build with her mother trying to win back her trust, and Claire has taken a big step by letting her back into her life [based] upon all these promises that Breeze made.

TVLINE | I have to imagine there’s also some guilt, even if Breeze’s alcoholism was out of Claire’s control.
She feels a major sense of guilt. She looks in the car and sees the champagne bottle, the one bottle that she left for herself. She was [anticipating] doing well in surgery, and she wanted to celebrate — and that’s the thing that killed her mother. She feels like it was her own little selfish moment that led to this. But there’s also anger, because her mother promised that she wouldn’t do this.

TVLINE | And beyond those recent promises, Claire has always had to step in and rescue Breeze from her many demons.
It’s complicated. With Claire’s mom, there’s always been a push and pull in terms of who had to be the parent. This was the moment where Claire failed at that in the most ultimate way… It’s a complicated cocktail of emotions.

TVLINE | How would you describe Claire’s state of mind in the following episode?
The way that she deals with [Breeze’s death] is relatively unusual. Although Claire is very open with her patients and empathetic in that way, when it comes to herself, she kind of goes into shutdown mode, and that is something we are exploring quite heavily. You’re going to see an interesting change.

TVLINE | Claire has been there for Shaun to help navigate this new relationship with Carly. Is he able to return the favor and support her in the wake of this traumatic event?
It’s interesting, because Shaun is quite bound up with what’s happening with him and Carly. Obviously, he’s a great friend to Claire, but she’s not as transparent about her life. So it falls to another colleague that you may not necessarily expect to be there for her, and they form a slightly unlikely bond over this, which has been really lovely to play. I’m not going to say who, but you’ll find out soon enough.

The Good Doctor’s Antonia Thomas Tees Up Claire’s First Surgery: Will Mom Prove to Be Her Achilles Heel? https://briefnews.eu/the-good-doctors-antonia-thomas-tees-up-claires-first-surgery-will-mom-prove-to-be-her-achilles-heel/ https://briefnews.eu/the-good-doctors-antonia-thomas-tees-up-claires-first-surgery-will-mom-prove-to-be-her-achilles-heel/#respond Mon, 07 Oct 2019 14:10:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-good-doctors-antonia-thomas-tees-up-claires-first-surgery-will-mom-prove-to-be-her-achilles-heel/

RELATED STORIES

The Good Doctor this week will turn its attention to another good doctor: Antonia Thomas‘ Claire Browne. Monday’s episode (ABC, 10/9c) spends a day in the life of the third-year resident, who recently was chosen to be the first of Melendez’s protégés to lead a surgical procedure.

“[Executive producer David Shore and I] talked about it a little bit ahead of time — like, an episode ahead of time,” Antonia Thomas tells TVLine. “Well, maybe two episodes ahead of time, and he says, ‘You know, I have this idea.’ It was real exciting and real terrifying, because it felt like a big responsibility.” But Thomas was excited for the opportunity to delve deeper into Claire’s life at such an important moment in her journey. “I think it’s really cool for Claire as a resident to get this accolade to be the first [resident] to lead surgery. And as a bit of character development, it’s super fun to play.”

In the episode, Claire faces complications at home and at work as she prepares for a gallbladder removal. The patient is a teenage girl whose relationship with her mom (9-1-1‘s Tracie Thoms) and her siblings has started to wear on her. Soon enough, Claire takes notice and tries to help.

The Good Doctor 3x03“Claire is such an empathetic person,” Thomas says. “She’s always trying to dig deep in terms of finding ways to connect, and I think— I don’t know that she necessarily sees a bit of herself [in this patient], but Claire is always trying to use her own experiences to empathize and help in whatever way that she can.”

Meanwhile, the doctor has her own set of familial issues, now that she has allowed Breeze (returning guest star Sharon Leal) to crash on her couch. “In the lead-up to her big surgery, that’s on her mind,” Thomas says. “With Claire’s mom, there’s a lot of guilt, a lot of worry and a lot of stress, so to have that kind of playing alongside this massive thing for her [is overwhelming]. She’s just trying to juggle the two… and as the day progresses, and the surgery progresses, that whole situation culminates in something a little bit shocking.”
