One of the largest floating dry docks in the world (PD-50) has sunk during the maintenance work on the Russian aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov. No casualties have been reported in the incident, which happened at a ship repair yard just outside of the northwestern port city of Murmansk. According to some reports, however, four employees fell into the water and had to be treated for hypothermia. According to the dockyard management, the PD-50 sank after its cisterns were overloaded with water due to a power outage. The PD-50 was one of the largest floating docks in the world, designed for the repair of large ships and submarines. The 330-meter-long and 76-meter-wide vessel was built in 1980 in Sweden for the Soviet Navy, and has a capacity of up to 80,000 tons. The Admiral Kuznetsov was not damaged in the incident, Sputnik reports. The aircraft-carrying cruiser is currently being towed to a nearby repair yard, where its maintenance will resume.
]]>BANKS often face conflicts of interest when it comes to advising their customers. The regulators who are supposed to stop the abuses that can result are not always up to the job. But when wrongdoing does finally come to light, the penalties can be vast. Financial institutions in Britain have had to lay aside £40bn ($ 52bn) to compensate customers mis-sold payment protection insurance. Wells Fargo was fined $ 1bn by American regulators and ordered to reimburse the people to whom it had sold useless insurance or mortgages with inflated fees. Now it is the turn of Australian banks to face a reckoning.
A royal commission has exposed a litany of abuses. Its interim report, published on September 28th, paints the country’s financial institutions as consumer-crushing oligopolies. Lenders charged hidden fees long after providing services, and for some services they never provided at all, on occasion to people who were dead. They siphoned off at least A$ 1bn ($ 720m) of compulsory pension…

A pair of Pixel news items hit the Internet this weekend. First up, we have more leaked pictures of Google’s upcoming Pixel 3 XL flagship, this time in white to go along with the previously leaked black version.
The pictures, which were taken by XDA forum user dr.guru, line up well with the previous Pixel pictures, showing a device with a very tall top notch, a bottom chin bezel, and what looks to be front-facing stereo speakers. It looks like Google is still bucking all the camera trends with two front-facing cameras and one rear camera. The post said the device was remote wiped by Google, but the bootloader shows a Snapdragon 845 device codenamed “Crosshatch,” with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The previous leak was a 128GB version.

Google Maps is a unique platform where you can travel the world from the comfort of your sofa.
The maps website has footage taken from all corners of the globe.
This ranges from the mundane everyday to the weird and wonderful – it just depends where you look.
One strange sight spotted recently was a mysterious man seen floating near a dock in Australia.
The figure is in the sea lapping up against the Southport pier in Queensland, Australia.
It’s impossible to look at the street view image without the strange sight leaping out at you.
But what is it? At first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking the figure is an actual living human.
However, on closer inspection, you can see the large figure is something else altogether.
It is made up of what looks like giant Lego blocks, formed in the shape of a man doing the back stroke.
Discussing the mysterious figure on the Virtual Globe Trotting website, forum users traded theories about what the figure could possibly be.
One person wrote: “It seems like a doll (plastics, perhaps).”
Another wrote: “My guess is either a inflated figure of some sort or it’s got nothing to do with a humanoid figure, it just happens to look like one from above.”
Another user who claims to be from the Gold Coast explains that the apparent man is actually a floating pontoon.
The anonymous user writes: “This is a floating pontoon for the kids ( and adults) in the Southport Broadwater Swimming Lagoon at the Southport Broadwater Park Play area Marine Parade Southport on the Gold Coast.”
This isn’t the only weird sight to appear on the Google Maps platform this month.
A scene snapped by Google Maps Street View in Mexico shows an enormous white lorry stuck in a ditch at the side of the road.
Yet despite its size and predicament, the rescue service that has come to its aid is a tiny tow truck about half the lorry’s size.
Three men are gathered behind the tow truck – perhaps discussing how they can proceed with their rescue mission, if at all.
It’s unclear what became of the men and the stuck truck as Google Maps caught the scene frozen in time and the aftermath was not filmed.
Clearly the white truck was shifted eventually as the current scene on Google Maps Street View shows the grass verge and woodlands beyond devoid of any vehicles.

Nyko had clearly been watching my Nintendo Switch coverage. The accessory maker invited me to an E3 demo this summer with promises of all kinds of new, third-party Switch accessories, but this wasn’t about carrying cases or screen protectors. The invite frontloaded one accessory above them all: the Nyko Portable Docking Kit.
Ever since I first played with a Switch, I’ve been wanting a reasonably priced, hyper-portable dock to toss into my laptop bag, to better enable an impromptu “let’s hook Mario Kart up to a TV” party. Nintendo’s official dock, as I found, is designed for nothing of the sort. Nyko demonstrated something that plain-and-simply got the job done. But that was during its flashy E3 demo—how would that translate into a final product?
The answer finally arrived in my mailbox this week, following a quiet rollout to retailers in the States. The result is modest and gets the job done, though its specific issues may very well be dealbreakers for people who want it all in a truly portable Switch dock.

Apple’s latest take on the MacBook Pro is impressive, but not without its drawbacks.
It’s faster and slimmer than previous generations, but only has one type of port: Thunderbolt 3.
If you’ve already invested in traditional USB accessories, or rely on SD cards or want to connect to external displays, you’ll be out of luck unless you pick up a bunch of dongles.
Another option is to pick up a Thunderbolt 3 dock, which sacrifices one of your MacBook Pro’s ports to give you access to a bunch of others. For years I would connect all of my peripherals to a Thunderbolt 2 dock, and attach that to my computer with a single cable. It’s cleaner option than attaching a series of dongles that gives you the same result.
I’ve rounded up the current Thunderbolt 3 docks on the market, but there are a couple of things I’d like to mention right of the bat. The first is that connecting things to a dock, and then a computer introduces an extra step in the chain that could occasionally cause problems. For instance, you’ll have to worry about the connection of an external hard drive to your dock and the dock’s connection to your computer.
Second, if something happens to the dock — problems after a power surge for instance — it could impact both what’s attached to the dock and your computer. I never had that happen during the years I used one on a daily basis, but it’s something to consider. Also, if you’re not using a surge protector yet, now is the ideal time to get one.
Finally, Thunderbolt 3 is a new standard and there are bound to be a couple of kinks left to work out. Make sure that you connect these docks to your computer using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Although it uses the same physical connector as USB-C, they’re different since the latter doesn’t have nearly as much bandwidth.
If you can accept these trade-offs, you’ll be in good shape.
Yes, these docks are expensive, but they’re meant to ease the transition between everything that came before Thunderbolt 3 (and USB-C) and our hopefully single-port future. When you consider how much money it’d take to invest in all new equipment, you’re actually catching a pretty big break.
I’ve broke down what makes each of the docks stand out below, but if there’s a specific feature you’re looking for, make sure to check out each one’s product page.

I’ve just started testing this dock, but it’s the follow-up to the one I used every day for years. OWC does its best to match Apple’s aesthetics, so the aluminum body will look nice next to your computer on a desk.
Ports: 5 USB 3.1, 1 S/PDIF, 1 FireWire 800, 1 Ethernet, 2 Thunderbolt 3, 1 mini DisplayPort, 1 headphone jack and analog in port, 1 SD Card Reader.
Caldigit
The inclusion of the eSATA ports makes CalDigit’s dock ideal for people with a lot of redundant external storage. Everything else is pretty standard, but it’s nice that you can also connect legacy accessories and have a wired network connection with the same dock.
Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, 1 DisplayPort, 3 USB 3.1, 2 eSATA 6G, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 1 3.5mm Audio in/out port.
Amazon
Another general purpose dock, this has fewer USB ports, but does include a full-sized DisplayPort, which is useful if you’re using a high-end monitor.
Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, 3 USB-A 3.0 ports (1.5 A charging each), 1 DisplayPort, 1 Audio in/out port, 1 Audio out port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port.

Lenovo’s collaboration with Amazon to make Alexa-powered devices began with the Smart Assistant speaker in January, but the PC maker is far from done with its smart home ambitions. Today, the company unveiled the Home Assistant Pack, which is basically a $ 70 speaker dock that attaches to and props up tablets while boosting the audio capabilities. In short, stick this on the side of your tablet, and you’ll give it more volume, better microphones and an Echo Show-like display for Alexa.
That sounds like a nifty way to repurpose your tablet, and I’m excited by the idea, but there is one big caveat with the Home Assistant Pack: It only works with Lenovo’s Tab 4 and Tab 4 Pro (both come in 8-inch and 10-inch models). For now, anyway. The company hasn’t shared whether it will make docks that are compatible with other devices yet, but it will likely depend on how well this version does.
From my brief preview at a recent demo in New York, the dock performed as promised. I asked Alexa “How old is the president?” from about five feet away in a quiet room. The Home Assistant Pack’s two far-field mics heard me, and Alexa read me the correct answer through its three-watt speaker within seconds. A card appeared on the screen as well, via the custom Home Assistant app, saying that president Donald Trump is 71. Of course, the relatively distraction-free environment I was in provided an ideal situation for this test — whether the dock can hear me as well over my TV or chatty friends remains to be seen.

The visual version of Alexa on the Tab 4 isn’t as fully-featured as it is on the Echo Show, though. You won’t be able to stream from your security camera or play with a rich, graphics-intensive interface. But the bare-bones version that Lenovo offers seemed adequate during my preview. Of course, I’d have to live with and test the device before I can get a better understanding of the differences, but for now, I’m happy with what’s there.
Considering the Echo Show costs $ 230, and a Tab 4 sets you back around $ 150, Lenovo’s offering is at least a cheaper option. It’s a great way to dust off a (most likely) neglected tablet and put it to work; I just wish it would work with the tablet I actually own. If Lenovo does make the dock available to other brands or tablet models, I’ll be more happy with the premise. For now, though, I remain cautiously intrigued.
