Britain views the poisoning of ex-double agent Sergei Skripal as a “possibility to launch this anti-Russian campaign,” said Yakovenko, who has been serving in his position since 2011. “This is a scenario that was written in London but it’s a short-sighted scenario because, in the long run, Britain will have to explain what is behind all these things in Salisbury,” he added.

Britain is trying to find a new place in the world order as it is leaving the EU and attempting to maintain relations with international organizations, Yakovenko said. “The key organization is NATO. Britain is trying to find [its] place, and they found that place in a so-called anti-Russian campaign,” he said. The UK is one of the founders of NATO and has almost a 70-year-old history with the alliance.

“That’s why we saw their new concept of national security last year, where Russia was named as a major enemy of Britain,” the Russian ambassador said.

Another concern for Russia in the Skripal case is the fact that the whole investigation has been classified. “Nobody saw even the pictures of these people in a hospital [Skripal and his daughter Yulia] – whether they are alive or maybe they are in good health. Nobody talked to the doctors. There is absolutely no transparency in the case,” the diplomat stated.

Yakovenko said he was surprised by how quickly British PM Theresa May blamed Russia for Skripal’s poisoning, despite the absence of any evidence. “We want to clarify all the questions behind this provocation – this is exactly how we see [this incident],” he added.

The British authorities will also have to explain the results of their investigation to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the envoy believes. They will have to show “what are they doing in a secret chemical laboratory which is eight miles from Salisbury, where they investigated that substance based on their info and on their samples, following certain standards they have,” he said.

Authorities in the UK claim a Soviet-era nerve agent called Novichok was used in the attack on the former Russian-UK double agent. Russia denies any involvement in the incident.

In a separate interview with Rossiya 24 TV channel, Yakovenko said that Russia would “exert maximum pressure” on the UK over the situation with Skripal and his daughter. “I am sure we won’t let them [Britain] off the hook,” he added.

On Monday, Prime Minister May confronted Moscow with an ultimatum to reveal the details of the alleged Skripal plot. The demand was rejected and, on Wednesday, the UK imposed sanctions on Russia, which included expelling 23 diplomats, limiting diplomatic ties, and freezing Russian state assets in the UK.

In response, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that UK diplomats would “definitely” be expelled from the country in response to the move by London. However, Moscow stressed that it was open to cooperation with the UK on the Skripal case if it is treated as an equal partner in the probe.

Bali volcano continues to cause chaos as fears heighten for a second, larger eruption of Mount Aguing.

The island’s international airport, Denpasar International, remains closed for a second day.

Thousands of tourists have been left stranded in the airport, with around 2,000 demanding refunds or rescheduled tickets.

“Aircraft flight channels are covered with volcanic ash,” said the transport ministry in a statement concerning the closures.

Bali’s airport will be closed until 7am local time on Wednesday (23:00 GMT Tuesday), the statement maintained. 

Saurabh Sanwaria, a Twitter user stuck in the international airport, wrote: “We are stranded in Bali due to volcanic eruption. None of the airlines are giving satisfactory answers about the rescheduling of flights. Help us getting out of Bali.”

Family members of those stranded tweeted concerns messages about their loved ones as they remain unable to leave.

Adie Jamil wrote: “My niece & her family are stranded in Kuta #Bali as flight were cancelled due to #GunungAgung eruption. We’re so worry [sic]”.

Meanwhile, within the 10km evacuation zone around Mount Aguing, BNPB, Indonesia’s National Board for Disaster Management, struggle to convince at risk villagers to leave their homes.

“Not all villagers in the dangerous radius are willing to evacuate. Until now there are still many people who remain in their houses,” they reported in a post on social media.

Residents have instead offered prayers as they remain in the shadow of the volcano, which is spewing ash and smoke into the sky.

Some who left their homes when the danger alert was raised to 4, the highest level, in September have since returned – despite these warnings.

Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre, PVMBG, who are using equipment such as drones and satellites to monitor the volcano, said predictions are difficult at this stage.

However, they did say the peak had enlarged in the past few weeks “indicating there is fairly strong pressure toward the surface”.

They have warned of the possibility of an eruption mirroring the last eruption 54 years ago in 1963.

The explosion sent rocks large than the size of a fist flying up to a radius of 8km around the volcano.

Officials are on standby to divert flights away from Bali should the situation arise. 

Flights will be diverted to 10 other airports in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Makassar, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Solo, Ambon, Manado, Praya, Kupang and Banyuwangi. 

Transport minister Budi Karya Sumadi said: “The planes will be diverted to their nearest location or where it originally took off from.”

The volcano is being closely monitored by airlines, with 100 buses prepared to evacuate tourists. 

Virgin Australia and Jetstar are taking extra fuel on flights from Australia, in case they need to turn around.

Singapore Airlines is offering customers the option to rebook or have their flights refunded, if they are travelling between September 23 and October 2. 

But no inbound or outbound flights at Bali’s Denpasar Airport have been cancelled due to the volcano threat as yet. 

Indonesian officials insist the island is still safe for tourists, but locals in the area say tourism numbers have dropped. 

One tourist who is staying in Amed, on the east coast of Bali, said he feels “pretty safe”. 

German national Christoph Lange told AFP: “We’ve got like 20, 30, 40 shakes where you could feel the earth shaking.

“While we were diving we had quite a few. Under water you can hear it, it’s pretty loud actually.”

Mount Agung has been shaking since August, with the alert level raised to its highest on Friday last week. 

Indonesia lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, straddling tectonic plates.

The volcano last erupted in 1963. Over 1,000 people were killed in the natural disaster.

The Ryanair flight was bound for Ibiza, departing from Stansted Airport on Saturday when the incident occurred.

The men involved reportedly demanded more alcohol on the flight and when refused became angry and violent.

They had already been drinking beforehand, consuming lager and spirits before even boarding the flight.

They then became violent with the cabin crew when being refused.

A source told the MailOnlne: “One of the guys wanted to buy something extra and was a bit rude — the flight attendant was ignoring him.

“He went on demanding, and grabbed her by the arm asking to serve him.”

The plane was forced to divert to Bordeaux Airport in the south of France, where the rowdy passengers were met by police.

A video then shows them fighting with the police officers on the tarmac.

The video films the passengers as one of them throws his bag across the tarmac before fighting and being tackled by the police.

Ryanair told Express Online: “This flight from London Stansted to Ibiza diverted to Bordeaux after a number of passengers became disruptive inflight.

“The aircraft landed normally and the passengers were removed and detained by police upon arrival, before the aircraft continued to Ibiza.

“We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority. This is now a matter for local police.”

BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Billionaire financier George Soros warned the European Union on Thursday that it was facing an “existential crisis”, saying the bloc should not let protracted Brexit talks distract it from making vital reforms.

Soros, a liberal philanthropist, wrote in an article published by Project Syndicate that Europe needed to radically reinvent itself.

“Negotiating the separation with Britain will divert the EU’s attention from its own existential crisis, and the talks are bound to last longer than the two years allotted to them,” he said. “Five years seems more likely.”

Soros said the EU should approach the Brexit negotiations in a “constructive spirit” and at the same time should make itself attractive again to people, especially younger generations.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who faces elections on June 8, said earlier this week that Britain would leave the EU without an agreement if it was unable to achieve a satisfactory agreement with the bloc.

While stressing the need for a constructive attitude to talks with Britain, Soros said the EU had become an organization in which the euro zone constitutes the inner core and the other members are relegated to an inferior position.

“Replacing a ‘multi-speed’ Europe with a ‘multi-track’ Europe that allows member states a wider variety of democratic choices would have a far-reaching beneficial effect,” he said.

“As it stands, member states want to reassert their sovereignty, rather than surrendering more of it.”

He urged steps by the EU in three areas: territorial disintegration, exemplified by Brexit; the refugee crisis; and the lack of adequate economic growth.

But Soros said he was hopeful that after Emmanuel Macron, the only pro-European candidate, won presidential elections in France, and upcoming German elections could lead to a growing pro-Europe momentum which “may then be strong enough to overcome the biggest threat: a banking and migration crisis in Italy.”

Soros, who has been portrayed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as a financial speculator who supported mass inflow of migrants into Europe, said he welcomed the EU’s recent tough words on Hungary and Poland, two countries which critics say are on an authoritarian track.

“I admire the courageous way Hungarians have resisted the deception and corruption of the mafia state Orban has established, and I am encouraged by the European institutions’ energetic response to the challenges emanating from Poland and Hungary,” Soros said.

A Hungarian government spokesman said Soros had a clear political agenda, and the organizations funded by him were pursuing this.

“It has become quite clear now…that Soros wants to be the political opposition of the Hungarian government along with his organizations,” Zoltan Kovacs said in a reply to Reuters.
