Dive into the long lost SimCity NES port https://briefnews.eu/dive-into-the-long-lost-simcity-nes-port/ https://briefnews.eu/dive-into-the-long-lost-simcity-nes-port/#respond Wed, 26 Dec 2018 07:57:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dive-into-the-long-lost-simcity-nes-port/

SimCity on the Super Nintendo was groundbreaking — it managed to combine the joy of simulated city building that Mac and Amiga gamers enjoyed into a family-friendly console title that anyone could play. But did you know Maxis and Nintendo also had an NES version in the works, too?

Last year, two prototype cartridges of the NES SimCity appeared at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, and Frank Cifaldi of the Video Game History Foundation snagged a digital copy. As a fitting Christmas gift to the gaming world, he published a deep dive into the history of the long lost game, which also covers the ways it differs from the SNES version we’re all familiar with, as well as a NES ROM for emulators.

As Cifaldi tells it, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto was interested in creating a city simulation game, but once he discovered SimCity he decided to collaborate with SimCity creator Will Wright on a version of the title for the NES and SNES. But even though both editions were announced in 1991, the NES port simply disappeared. To this day, we still don’t know why it was cancelled — it’s particularly baffling, since the prototype version seems almost complete. One guess? Nintendo could have decided it made more sense to bank on a single SNES SimCity port to give gamers more of a reason to upgrade to their new console.

This Bahrain Dive Once Made People Rich https://briefnews.eu/this-bahrain-dive-once-made-people-rich/ https://briefnews.eu/this-bahrain-dive-once-made-people-rich/#respond Fri, 09 Nov 2018 21:13:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-bahrain-dive-once-made-people-rich/ Before oil was discovered in the Persian Gulf in the early 20th century, the major business in the region was pearling. It involved diving for oysters on the ocean bed and selling them to jewelry makers and merchants. The bustling pearling industry, often dangerous to divers, was the pillar of Bahrain’s economy.

Now the ancient tradition is being revisited — in the form of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bahrain Pearling Trail, on Muharraq Island, is the world’s last remaining intact pearling site. The hourlong trek takes visitors through port buildings, offshore oyster beds and a fort. There are also stops at the former homes of wealthy merchants, shops and a mosque. If you’re feeling adventurous, strap on some scuba gear and try your luck in the sea.

Pearl diving began in Bahrain at least 2,000 years ago — it was first mentioned in the Assyrian texts referring to the Dilmun civilization. For the duration of pearling season — June to September — diving ships, known as banoosh (or “boom”), each with a crew of 60 divers, would set sail daily from the Bu Maher port, the heart of the industry. Oysters containing the purest and whitest of pearls are found in deep waters.

Alhough there is no longer a pearl diving industry in Bahrain, it remains the country’s biggest tourist attraction.

The three-hour excursion (32 Bahraini dinar, or about $ 85) starts at the Bu Maher port, and includes a two-hour dive at one of four dive sites and a guided tour of the 3.5-kilometer pearling trail. All diving expeditions originate at Ras Rayyah, the northern tip of Muharraq. “Bu Amamma is a much deeper diving site, which makes locating oysters a bit more challenging,” says Miranda Castello, who recently dived at the site on the tour. She was drawn, she says, to the “warm, shallow water with miles of oyster beds.” For beginners or visitors without a Professional Association of Diving Instructors license, Sayah, the site closest to the shore, is the best option. Divers are allowed to collect as many as 60 oysters per dive. This quota — and the tours — is monitored by the government to ensure sustainability.

After a morning dive, visitors get a lesson on key pearl-trading history and follow the path of jewelry designer and explorer Jacques Cartier, who visited Bahrain in the early 20th century. A tour of the Bu Maher fort is followed by a stop at the visitor’s center, where some of the most expensive pearls found by divers — and now in the government’s custody — are on display. The rest of the trek takes visitors through 17 timber buildings crafted in the arabesque style.

The government of Bahrain has been making efforts to restore and conserve the island’s older structures threatened by the high humidity. A major restoration took place in 2002, initiated by Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed al-Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA). The project included the renovation of the merchant houses and opening a center for culture and research, which “resulted in a big boost in tourist influx on the island,” says Waleed Ibrahim, a BACA media representative.

Although there is no longer a pearl diving industry in Bahrain, it remains the country’s biggest tourist attraction, one that, along with other tourist sites, contributes 9.7 percent to the overall economy.

Will you get rich diving for pearls in the beautiful waters off Bahrain? Unlikely. There’s about a 5 percent chance of finding one pearl. Most are found in old oysters, which lie deep on the ocean floor. Still, the prospect is enticing. And if you don’t luck out? At least you participated in an age-old cultural tradition.

Dive Into Some Very Silly Yet Enjoyable ‘Aquaman’ Character Posters https://briefnews.eu/dive-into-some-very-silly-yet-enjoyable-aquaman-character-posters/ https://briefnews.eu/dive-into-some-very-silly-yet-enjoyable-aquaman-character-posters/#respond Wed, 07 Nov 2018 21:28:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dive-into-some-very-silly-yet-enjoyable-aquaman-character-posters/ aquaman posters

Aquaman will soon make a big splash in theaters everywhere! That’s right, the King of Atlantis is going to swim his way onto movie screens, and cause a tidal wave at the box office! And he’s going to get you wet. Okay, that’s enough of that. We are indeed getting closer to the release of Aquaman, though, which means marketing is going to increase. Case in point: a series of silly (yet somehow enjoyable) character posters have just surfaced (sorry, I can’t stop!), featuring lots of blue, lots of flowing hair, and lots of Patrick Wilson yelling. Plunge to the depths below to sea the Aquaman posters.

Aquaman Poster Aquaman

Here’s the big guy himself! Look at that flowing hair. Maybe he’s born with it…maybe it’s under water. Interesting that the poster explicitly calls him “Arthur Curry” instead of “Aquaman.” I guess they didn’t want Aquaman twice on the poster. In any case, here’s Jason Momoa in the classic Aquaman colors, his fists ready to clutch some brewskies.

Aquaman Poster Mera

Amber Heard‘s Mera is next, and her hair here looks a hell of a lot better than it does in live action, where it very much just looks like a big orange wig. In the background, we see some dudes riding sharks. Is that enough for you? It should be.

Aquaman Poster Black Manta

Villain Black Manta stands with sword at the ready, flanked by a wall of rushing water. Hey, Manta – watch out! There’s water behind you! Strike your cool pose later.

Aquaman Poster King Orm

This might be my favorite of the bunch. Patrick Wilson‘s stands (or rather, swims) as King Orm. What I love about this is that he’s yelling, his mouth open wide – and in the background, you see a shark with its mouth open wide as well. It’s like the shark is mocking him. “Oh, I’m King Orm, look at me open my mouth super wide, duh!”

Aquaman Poster Dolph

I’m thrilled to see Dolph Lundgren returning to high profile roles. He appears in both Creed II and Aquaman this year, and that’s great. He plays King Nereus in Aquaman, and on this poster, and I’m loving the tinge of rainbow coloring here.

Aquaman Poster Vulko

Oh shit, it’s Vulko! Watch out! He’s nuts. Okay, I have no idea who Vulko is. But I do know he’s played by Willem Dafoe, and that’s always exciting.

Aquaman Poster Atlanna

I saved the most glamorous poster for last. Nicole Kidman plays Queen Atlanna, and I still can’t believe Nicole Kidman is in this movie. Sure, she’s done comic book movies before – she was in Batman Forever. Still, it’s strange to see her swinging around a trident and wearing whatever the heck it is she’s wearing here. Strange and cool.

Aquaman opens December 14, 2018.

Dive in to Bath's splendour https://briefnews.eu/dive-in-to-baths-splendour/ https://briefnews.eu/dive-in-to-baths-splendour/#respond Sat, 22 Sep 2018 18:07:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dive-in-to-baths-splendour/

Place

The glorious, honey-hued city of Bath lies in the valley of the River Avon in Somerset.

This elegant Roman place has long attracted visitors who come to take the medicinal waters of the natural hot springs. It was awarded World Heritage Status in 1987.

See Pulteney Bridge, designed in 1769 by Robert Adam. It was built in Palladian style like the Rialto in Venice and is one of only four bridges in the world to have shops across its full span on both sides. It has stupendous views of the Avon and city rooftops.

St Swithin’s Church has major connections to the novelist Jane Austen, Bath’s most famous former resident. It was here her parents were married and where her father is buried.

At the Roman Baths (romanbaths.co.uk), an audio-visual presentation gives you a sense of what the baths were like 2,000 years ago.

Statues of generals and emperors stand like sentinels to oversee your visit. Here you can see a temple to the goddess Sulis Minerva, built in 60-70AD, the focal point of worship in Aquae Sulis which later became Bath.

The name roughly means “hot waters” but even on the warmest days don’t be tempted to jump into them as they have an unwelcoming green tinge.

Do Go on a pub crawl with a difference with Around And About (batharoundandaboutbath.com) which organises off-the-beaten-track tours.

At the Quarryman’s Arms (01225 743569/ butcombe.com/pubs/the-quarrymans-arms), once a favourite watering hole of men who toiled below ground, we learned about the quarries that produced Bath stone and which were turned into secret bunkers by the government in case of nuclear attack.

River cruise You should try a leisurely river cruise along the Avon with Pulteney Cruisers (pulteneycruisers.com) which has been plying its trade in the centre of Bath for more than 50 years.

An hour’s round trip to the pretty village of Bathampton passes under Pulteney Bridge. You’ll see plenty of boat lovers taking to the water and maybe even herons or kingfishers.

Situated in an elegant Georgian townhouse, the Jane Austen Centre (janeausten.co.uk) is one of Bath’s most visited attractions and features a selection of original furniture and clothing.

Eat From The Green Rocket (01225 420084/ thegreenrocket.co.uk) look out on to the abbey in the city centre as you enjoy lunch in this awardwinning vegetarian restaurant.

Around £35 for two. Acorn Restaurant (01225 446059/ acornrestaurant.co.uk) can be found behind a blue Georgian facade.

The veggie dishes are innovative with items such as king oyster mushroom scallops with celeriac puree and Waldorf brunoise. Three courses, £38.95.

Drink The Crystal Palace pub (crystalpalacepub.co.uk) is set in a cobbled Georgian square a little away from the hustle and bustle. It’s said Lord Nelson once stayed here.

There’s a covered terrace, a fine selection of beers and gins and a decent but unfussy menu. In nearby Corsham, The Flemish Weaver (01249 701929) offers an interesting alternative. It promises a decent pint in what could be the quirkiest pub in Somerset.

Stay The Kennard (01225 310472) is a 12-room boutique guesthouse a short walk from the centre.

There’s a little and rather lovely, almost secret, garden at the back. Doubles from £90 (two sharing), B&B. Going upmarket, the Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa (01225 823333/royalcrescent.co.uk) offers doubles from £280 (two sharing), B&B.

The hotel is the centrepiece of the Royal Crescent, described by the composer Haydn as a “building more magnificent than any I had seen”.

American Ninja Warrior: Take a Deep Dive Into the First Underwater Obstacle https://briefnews.eu/american-ninja-warrior-take-a-deep-dive-into-the-first-underwater-obstacle/ https://briefnews.eu/american-ninja-warrior-take-a-deep-dive-into-the-first-underwater-obstacle/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 23:21:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/american-ninja-warrior-take-a-deep-dive-into-the-first-underwater-obstacle/

“For nine years, the entire goal of Ninja Warrior has been to stay dry,” host Matt Iseman points out. But in the Season 10 finale, Ninjas will be asked to swim for their buzzer-beating lives in the NBC series’ first underwater obstacle. And TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek.

In Stage 2 of this year’s Las Vegas finale (airing Monday at 8/7c), Ninjas have four-and-a-half minutes to tackle Epic Catch & Release (a super-sized version of a Dallas obstacle), Crisscross Salmon Ladder, Déjà Vu (new), Swing Surfer and then Wingnut Alley, before being offered goggles and invited to break through the Water Walls, the first underwater gauntlet.

Watch a spoiler-free tester demonstrate the new obstacle in the video above.

“You’re on Stage 2, so you’ve already gone through five absolutely brutal obstacles,” Iseman notes. “Your heart rate is going to be between 140 and 180 — and now you have to go underwater and lift, move, slide and twist these doors that are 50 to 100 lbs., all while the clock is ticking down.”

“Ninja Warrior is coming through on a whole new level with the addition of a water element,” adds co-host Akbar Gbajabiamila. “Talk about unexpected obstacles…. I think both the Ninjas and myself were in shock, awe, and hungry to figure it out!”

The hosts concur that the Water Walls (which replace Wall Flip) serve as testament to Ninja Warrior‘s mission to forever evolve and challenge its competitors.

“The Warped Wall used to be one of the most difficult obstacles, and then we had a Mega Wall…,” Iseman observes. “Now it’s like, ‘Lets put them under water and see what they can do!’” Keeping in mind that Ninjas aren’t necessarily comfortable under water, and thus may panic and/or eat up precious time.

Quips Iseman, “Listen, this is why I stay in the host booth!”

SINK OR SWIM: The Ik Kil cenote located in Mexico’s Yucatan region near the ruins of Chichen Itza (Image: GETTY)

I’m deep underground floating along a river, the ceiling and walls around me covered with giant stalactites as hundreds of bats swoop in the darkness.

It may sound like a scene from an Indiana Jones movie but this is just an average afternoon on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

These giant cenotes – natural limestone sinkholes – were formed thousands of years ago and stretch for more than 120 miles along the country’s Caribbean coast.

Feared and revered in equal measure, Mayans believe these caverns to be the openings to the underworld.

It was therefore unsurprising that we had some important business to take care of before we could venture deep inside.

The shaman (traditional holy man) began the ancient ritual by asking the Mayan gods – all 400 of them – for safe passage before blowing into a large conch shell and brushing our bodies with a branch, presumably to shield us from harm.

Wearing life jackets and head torches, we floated down the silent river, meeting only fish which were fleeing from the beams of our torches for 30 minutes that were serene and surreal in equal measure, as we discovered a geological wonder that few ever see.

Back out into the light – and the real world – we headed back to our hotel, the Hard Rock Riviera Maya.

mexico

HOLIDAY LIKE A ROCK STAR: The adults-only pool area at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya hotel complex (Image: nc )

A sprawling complex built around the rocky landscape, it is – as you may expect – an homage to rock and roll.

As the name suggests, the hotel has rock and roll at its heart, with walls adorned with music memorabilia including Noel Gallagher’s guitar, a shirt belonging to the late Tom Petty and even an indoor swimming pool in the middle of its nightclub.

My room was equally rock ’n’ roll. A king-size bed took centre stage while doors opened on to a balcony complete with a hammock.

Upstairs I had an indulgent private roof terrace complete with two-person hot tub and a spectacular sea view.

Interestingly, the property is split in two, meaning adults can have the run of the place in the Heaven section, while families with children can opt for the Hacienda area.

While it’s tempting to do very little here, the hotel is encouraging guests to be active with its newly opened activity centre Woodward.

There are indoor BMX tracks, Olympic-size trampolines and a giant foam pit.

Uniquely, the venue also offers a dry-land ski slope – despite the sweat-inducing heat outdoors.

mexico

El Castillo (Temple of Kukulkan) in Mexico (Image: GETTY)

Keen to explore beyond the complex, I headed 20 minutes down the road to Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Once a small fishing village, Playa del Carmen is now big and brash with the focus firmly on the tourist trade.

Its lively main street, Calle Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), is lined with restaurants and souvenir shops.

Most seemed to be heading for the raucous Tequila Barrel bar, where Mexico’s most famous tipple can be sampled at your peril.

While certainly worth a day trip, Playa del Carmen lacks the authenticity that can be found in the city of Valladolid, a 90-minute drive away to the west.

Most famous for being the gateway to Chichen Itza, inset, the iconic Mayan pyramid – Valladolid is a charming, sophisticated and laid-back colonial city with Spanish arcades and 16th-century bell towers that dominated the leafy main square.

I strolled through the narrow streets, past pastel-coloured houses and animated local ladies in traditional Mayan dresses who were busy putting the world to rights.

It couldn’t be further away from the brashness of Playa del Carmen.

mexico

OLD BEAUTY…. Mayan ruins at Tulum with the temple of El Castillo taking centrestage (Image: GETTY)

Back on the coast, I travelled south from my hotel to the fabled ruins of Tulum.

Over recent years this seaside town, full of luxurious boutique resorts and hedonistic yoga retreats, has become popular with the rich and famous seeking sun, sea and tequila.

At the far northern end of the beach stands the significant Mayan site, a series of temples and buildings thought to have been constructed in 564 AD.

However, it wasn’t until the early 1800s that these heavy stone slabs were discovered.

Inside the clifftop walled city, visitors are confronted with the remains of both the Temple of the Frescoes and Temple of The Wind God.

Most impressive of all, however, are the panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea which helped turn this place into a hub of international trade and a hotbed of great minds.

Every dwelling and temple has been carefully designed and planned.

The steps leading up to El Castillo, for example, are so narrowly crafted they are best taken sideways upon descent.

mexico

SOUVENIR PARADISE…. Browse the local handicrafts in Playa del Carmen (Image: getty)

The result? The Mayans would never turn their backs on the gods.

Another spot is believed to have been used as an astronomy centre where Mayans plotted the movement of the stars.

They were clearly on to a good thing.

And as night fell, and the beachfront hideaways started pulsating with the sound of live DJs, the darkened sky transformed into a glittery blanket, spellbinding everyone beneath it.

Goal, assist, dive: Neymar 'hat trick' sends Brazil to World Cup quarter-finals https://briefnews.eu/goal-assist-dive-neymar-hat-trick-sends-brazil-to-world-cup-quarter-finals/ https://briefnews.eu/goal-assist-dive-neymar-hat-trick-sends-brazil-to-world-cup-quarter-finals/#respond Tue, 03 Jul 2018 06:39:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/goal-assist-dive-neymar-hat-trick-sends-brazil-to-world-cup-quarter-finals/ Flaunting his flair and his finishing touch wasn't enough. Neymar put his theatrics on show, too.

What became clear in Brazil's 2-0 victory over Mexico on Monday is that the wild side of the striker's character is going nowhere at this year's World Cup. And neither is Brazil.

"I don't much care for criticism," Neymar said, "not even for praise."

Neymar led Brazil to a 2-0 victory over Mexico, while Nacer Chadli scored in the 94th minute to cap a 3-2 Belgium comeback over Japan. 1:43

With a goal and an assist, Neymar propelled Brazil into the quarter-finals of a tournament it has won five times. He also extended his platform to show the world he is as good — or better — than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Although Neymar has scored only two goals in four games in Russia, he did enter the World Cup after spending three months recovering from a broken right foot. And it was the right foot that helped to break through Mexico's stern resistance in Samara.

After releasing Willian with a back-heel, Neymar raced into the penalty area and slid to tap his teammate's return cross into the net.

While his scoring is so often the focus, Neymar also creates goals for his teammates. A toe-poked attempt to beat Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa in the 88th minute was diverted into the path of Robert Firmino, who scored with a tap-in just like Neymar did. The world's most expensive player has 11 goals and nine assists in his last 19 games for Brazil.

Neymar Jr. gets his foot on the ball to score Brazil's first goal in its 2-0 win over Mexico on Tuesday. (Clive Rose/Getty Images)

But before setting up the second goal it looked like Neymar's game — or even his World Cup — could be over with 20 minutes to go. It turned out to be pure histrionics. Writhing in agony after his right ankle was stepped on by Miguel Layun, Neymar managed to get back on his feet. But not before trying to step on Layun.

Both escaped punishment, but the judgment elsewhere was less forgiving, with Neymar asked after the match if he was a diva trying to draw fouls.

"I think it's more an attempt to undermine me than anything else," Neymar responded.

The five-time World Cup champions will next face either Japan or Belgium in the quarterfinals. Brazil has reached that stage at every World Cup since 1994.

Mexico has now lost in the round of 16 at every tournament over the same period of time, extending its wait for the "quinto partido" — or fifth game — for at least another four years. The last time Mexico reached the quarterfinals was when the country hosted the tournament in 1986.

Brazil became the all-time World Cup scoring leader with 228 goals after a 2-0 win over Mexico in their Round of 16 match in Samara, Russia on Monday. (Hector Vivas/Getty Images)

This year's World Cup had started so promisingly for Mexico. The team opened with a win over Germany, setting the defending champions on the path to an early exit. They caused problems for Brazil, too, initially.

But they couldn't find a way to stop Neymar.

"He's very agile. He's very fast," Brazil coach Tite said. "Is it wrong to feign, to provoke the players in the last third? It's not a sin."
