CUPERTINO, Calif.—Apple’s new flagship phones have been revealed, and critics of the iPhone’s design since 2017 will be happy to see that the company has taken a new approach to the camera and sensor notch at the top of the screen.

Instead of a notch descending from the top of the display, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max use a pill-shaped cutout several pixels below the bottom to house the selfie camera, 3D sensor, and more. Called the “dynamic island,” it takes up less of the screen than the notch by default, but it can resize itself to show different status indicators and other UI elements, blurring the line between the cutout and the rest of the screen. Tapping the dynamic island can also expand it to show more controls, or take you to a music or calling apps.

The new iPhone’s screen sizes are staying the same, at 6.1 and 6.7-inches, but they have a few all-new features (in addition to returning ones, like the 120Hz Pro Motion feature). The screens have a maximum brightness of 2000 nits, twice the peak brightness of the iPhone 13 Pro display. And Apple has also added an Apple Watch-esque “always-on” display features that can display the clock, iOS 16’s new widgets, and a few other things when your phone isn’t being actively used. The display’s refresh rate can drop as low as 1Hz when you’re not interacting with it, to save battery life.

Nintendo Switch next-gen NEWS: Ninty to ditch the Switch for mobile games? https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-next-gen-news-ninty-to-ditch-the-switch-for-mobile-games/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-next-gen-news-ninty-to-ditch-the-switch-for-mobile-games/#respond Sun, 06 Jan 2019 19:30:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-next-gen-news-ninty-to-ditch-the-switch-for-mobile-games/

Nintendo has suggested that the Switch could be its final home console.

In an interview with Nikkei (via Nintendo Everything), Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said that “we aren’t really fixated on our consoles”.

“At the moment we’re offering the uniquely developed Nintendo Switch and its software – and that’s what we’re basing how we deliver the ‘Nintendo experience’ on,” he said.

“That being said, technology changes. We’ll continue to think flexibly about how to deliver that experience as time goes on.

“In the long-term, perhaps our focus as a business could shift away from home consoles – flexibility is just as important as ingenuity.”

While an immediate move away from console development seems unlikely, Furukawa suggests that Nintendo will increase its mobile gaming presence.

“I’d like to increase the (amount of) games on smartphones that have a continuous stream of revenue,” he continues.

“We’re also dabbling in theme parks and movies – different ways to have our characters be a part of everyday life. I’m anticipating a strong synergy like that.”

Nintendo’s foray into mobile gaming began with Miitomo, followed by Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing Pocket Life.

The games have generally been considered a success, reportedly pocketing Nintendo $ 348 million in revenue in 2018.

Fire Emblem Heroes is the company’s most successful game so far, although Mario Kart Tour is expected to launch in 2019.

The Fire Emblem mobile spinoff is said to have generated around $ 230 million in revenue throughout 2018.

This takes its total earnings to $ 487 million, which is a truly remarkable figure.

Top 5 countries opting to ditch US dollar & the reasons behind their move https://briefnews.eu/top-5-countries-opting-to-ditch-us-dollar-the-reasons-behind-their-move/ https://briefnews.eu/top-5-countries-opting-to-ditch-us-dollar-the-reasons-behind-their-move/#respond Wed, 02 Jan 2019 06:59:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-5-countries-opting-to-ditch-us-dollar-the-reasons-behind-their-move/

The past year was full of events that inevitably split the global geopolitical space into two camps: those who still support using US currency as a universal financial tool, and those who are turning their back on the greenback.

Global tensions caused by economic sanctions and trade conflicts triggered by Washington have forced targeted countries to take a fresh look at alternative payment systems currently dominated by the US dollar.

RT has taken a deeper look into the recent phenomena of de-dollarization, summing up which countries have taken steps towards eliminating their reliance on the greenback, and the reasons behind their decision.

China

The ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China, as well as sanctions against Beijing’s biggest trading partners have forced China to take steps towards relieving the dollar dependence of the world’s second-largest economy.

Engine of growth: Trade turnover across China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ exceeds $ 5 trillion since 2013

In Beijing’s signature soft-power style, the government hasn’t made any loud announcements on the issue. However, the People’s Bank of China has been regularly reducing the country’s share of US Treasuries. Still the number-one foreign holder of the US sovereign debt, China has cut its share to the lowest level since May 2017.

Moreover, instead of promptly dumping the greenback, China is trying to internationalize its own currency, the yuan, which was included in the IMF basket alongside the US dollar, the Japanese yen, the euro, and the British pound. Beijing has recently made several steps towards strengthening the yuan, including accumulating gold reserves, launching yuan-priced crude futures, and using the currency in trade with international partners.

As part of its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, China is planning to introduce swap facilities in participating countries to promote the use of the yuan. Moreover, the country is actively pushing for a free-trade agreement called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which will include the countries of Southeast Asia. The trade pact could easily replace the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the proposed multi-national trade deal which was torn up by US President Donald Trump shortly after he took office. RCEP includes 16 country signatories and the potential pact is expected to form a union of nearly 3.4 billion people based on a combined $ 49.5 trillion economy, which accounts for nearly 40 percent of the world’s GDP.

India

Ranked the world’s sixth-largest economy, India is one of the biggest merchandise importers. It’s not surprising that the country is directly affected by most global geopolitical conflicts and is significantly impacted by sanctions applied to its trading partners.

Russia, India & Iran want to create alternative trade route to Suez Canal – report

Earlier this year, Delhi switched to ruble payments on supplies of Russian S-400 air-defense systems as a result of US economic penalties introduced against Moscow. The country also had to switch to the rupee in purchases of Iranian crude after Washington reinstituted sanctions against Tehran. In December, India and the United Arab Emirates sealed a currency-swap agreement to boost trade and investment without the involvement of a third currency.

Taking into account that India is the third-largest country by purchasing power parity, steps of this kind could considerably diminish the role of the greenback in global trading.

Turkey

Earlier this year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced plans to end the US dollar monopoly via a new policy that is aimed at non-dollar trading with the country’s international partners. Later, Turkey’s leader announced that Ankara is preparing to conduct trade through national currencies with China, Russia and Ukraine. Turkey also discussed a possible replacement of the US dollar with national currencies in trade transactions with Iran.

‘Turkey not America’: Erdogan continues crackdown on US dollar in favor of lira

The move was prompted by political and economic reasons. Relations between Ankara and Washington have been deteriorating since the failed military coup in the country to oust President Erdogan in 2016. It’s been reported that Erdogan suspects US involvement in the uprising and accuses Washington of harboring exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for masterminding the coup.

The Turkish economy sank after Washington introduced economic sanctions over the arrest of US evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson on terrorism charges in relation to the uprising.

Erdogan has repeatedly slammed Washington for unleashing a global trade war, sanctioning Turkey and trying to isolate Iran. The NATO member’s decision to buy Russian S-400 missile systems added fuel to the fire.

Moreover, Turkey is trying to ditch the dollar in an attempt to support its national currency. The lira has lost nearly half of its value against the greenback over the past year. The currency plunge was exacerbated by soaring inflation and increasing prices for goods and services.

Iran

A triumphant return of Iran to the global trading arena did not last long. Shortly after winning the US presidential election, Donald Trump opted to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal signed between Tehran and a group of nations, including the UK, US, France, Germany, Russia, China, and the EU.

The oil-rich nation has once again become a target for severe sanctions resumed by Washington, which has also threatened to introduce penalties against any countries that would violate the embargo. The punitive measures banned business deals with the Islamic Republic and cracked down on the country’s oil industry.

Sanctions have forced Tehran to look for alternatives to the US dollar as payment for its oil exports. Iran clinched a deal for oil settlements with India using the Indian rupee. It also negotiated a barter deal with neighboring Iraq. The partners are also planning to use the Iraqi dinar for mutual transactions to reduce reliance on the US dollar amid banking problems connected to US sanctions.

Russia

President Vladimir Putin said the US is “making a colossal strategic mistake” by “undermining confidence in the dollar.” Putin has never called for restricting dollar transactions or banning the use of US currency. However, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said earlier this year that the country had to dump its holdings of US Treasuries in favor of more secure assets, such as the ruble, the euro, and precious metals.

The country has already taken several steps towards de-dollarizing the economy due to the constantly growing burden of sanctions that have been introduced since 2014 over a number of issues. Russia has developed a national payment system as an alternative to SWIFT, Visa and Mastercard after the US threatened tougher new sanctions that would target Russia’s financial system.

Russia phasing out US dollar in military contracts in favor of local currencies – trade minister

So far, Moscow has managed to partially phase out the greenback from its exports, signing currency-swap agreements with a number of countries including China, India and Iran. Russia has recently proposed using the euro instead of the US dollar in trade with the European Union.

Once a top-10 holder of US sovereign debt, Russia has all but eliminated its holdings of US Treasuries. Moscow has used the money to boost the nation’s foreign reserves and to build up its gold stockpile to stabilize the ruble.

Google’s rumored Pixel 3 ‘Lite’ XL might ditch the notch https://briefnews.eu/googles-rumored-pixel-3-lite-xl-might-ditch-the-notch/ https://briefnews.eu/googles-rumored-pixel-3-lite-xl-might-ditch-the-notch/#respond Sun, 09 Dec 2018 21:27:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/googles-rumored-pixel-3-lite-xl-might-ditch-the-notch/

There’s been talk (and apparent leaks) of a mid-range Pixel 3 variant, but what about an equivalent to the larger Pixel 3 XL? That might be coming too. OnLeaks and 91mobiles claim to have details of a Pixel 3 ‘Lite’ XL (just a placeholder name for now), and have produced renders to match. The larger handset would move up to a 6-inch, 2,220 x 1,080 screen (versus the 6.3-inch, 2,960 x 1,440 panel on the Pixel 3 XL) but would otherwise resemble its smaller counterpart, including the plastic chassis. And notably, that would mean dropping the regular Pixel 3 XL’s notch — you’d ‘only’ have one front camera, but you also wouldn’t have a conspicuous protrusion into your screen.

The other specifications of the larger ‘Lite’ phone aren’t clear, although they’re expected to be similar to the regular version. If so, you’d get a reasonably speedy Snapdragon 670, 4GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel selfie shooter and 32GB of base storage. And yes, the parity would mean the inclusion of a headphone jack at the top.

It’s not certain when the bigger handset would arrive (provided the leaks are accurate), although it would likely ship alongside the more diminutive version. There’s little doubt that cost would be the main selling point, though. When the existing Pixel 3 XL starts at $ 899, it’s a tough sell to some customers. A mid-tier version still wouldn’t be a trivial purchase, but it’d be more palpable to phone fans who just want Google’s Android experience on a reasonably large display.

US presses allies to ditch Huawei citing cybersecurity risks from China – report https://briefnews.eu/us-presses-allies-to-ditch-huawei-citing-cybersecurity-risks-from-china-report/ https://briefnews.eu/us-presses-allies-to-ditch-huawei-citing-cybersecurity-risks-from-china-report/#respond Fri, 23 Nov 2018 08:00:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-presses-allies-to-ditch-huawei-citing-cybersecurity-risks-from-china-report/ Washington has been on a mission to discourage its allies from using Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei’s equipment, the Wall Street Journal reports. The firm earlier slammed the US for using politics for unfair competition.

Washington has been up in arms over Huawei’s worldwide expansion, “having initiated an extraordinary outreach campaign” to press its European and Asian allies to shun the world’s largest telecommunication equipment supplier, the WSJ writes, citing officials familiar with the situation.

US officials have been sounding the alarm particularly over the use of Chinese equipment by countries that host American military infrastructure. Germany, Italy, and Japan are among Washington’s closest allies that have already been briefed on the risks to which they have exposed themselves by installing Huawei equipment.

In addition to scaremongering about imminent cybersecurity threats from China, the US has also offered financial incentives to countries willing to bid farewell to the cutting-edge Chinese technology.

The WSJ reported that US officials are mulling subsidizing the purchase and maintenance of non-Chinese equipment by its allies. The perks will only be available to those who have ditched Huawei or any other Chinese equipment such as ZTE.

Washington is also considering the use of its own financial resources to boost local telecommunication industries, according to people cited in the report.

Efforts to talk its allies out of using Huawei have been ramped up in light of the looming introduction of 5G wireless networks, which are estimated to be 100 times faster than the existing 4G.

Washington fears that super-speed connections will make it easier for China to spy and even incapacitate devices such as components of manufacturing plants.

While stoking fears about China’s potential to undermine critical infrastructure, the US argues that Huawei will cave in to demands from the Chinese government, something the company vehemently denies, insisting that it is a private enterprise.

The company sees the US onslaught as an example of unfair competition. In February, six US intelligence agencies warned US citizens against buying products and using services provided by Huawei and ZTE.

FBI Director Christopher Wry said the US government was “deeply concerned about the risks” of allowing a foreign company controlled by its government to “gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks.”

In 2014, the company was banned from bidding for US government contracts over the same spying concerns.

In its war against Chinese tech, Washington went as far as accusing Google of being “more willing to support the Chinese Communist Party than the US military,” after the companies began a partnership to develop new standards of mobile phone messaging.

Top Huawei executive and CEO of the company’s consumer business Richard Yu called the US’ attempts to drive the company out of the markets “ridiculous,” accusing US officials of trying to “kick us from the US market” through “some political way.”

China suggests Trump should ditch ‘tapped’ iPhones for Huawei https://briefnews.eu/china-suggests-trump-should-ditch-tapped-iphones-for-huawei/ https://briefnews.eu/china-suggests-trump-should-ditch-tapped-iphones-for-huawei/#respond Thu, 25 Oct 2018 12:57:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-suggests-trump-should-ditch-tapped-iphones-for-huawei/

China is trolling Trump. In an official response to the allegations that it and Russia are spying on the President’s trio of iPhones, a top-ranking Chinese official said: “If they are very worried about iPhones being tapped, they can use Huawei.”

The snarky reply signals to the ban on the use of Huawei devices by US government agencies, signed into law by President Trump himself back in August. It followed years of suspicion regarding the tech giant’s ties with the Chinese government and accusations of “bribery, corruption, discriminatory behavior and copyright infringement.” Australia, too, recently banned Huawei from supplying 5G tech, while US senators are urging Canada to do the same.

Spokeswoman Hua Chunying — deputy director of the Chinese foreign ministry’s information department — also borrowed one of Trump’s favourite phrases to dismiss the findings of yesterday’s New York Times report, branding it “fake news.”

“Seeing this report, I feel there are those in America who are working all-out to win the Oscar for best screenplay,” Hua said at the ministry’s regular briefing in Beijing on Thursday, according to the South China Morning Post.

Off with their hats! Russian military to ditch traditional headgear https://briefnews.eu/off-with-their-hats-russian-military-to-ditch-traditional-headgear/ https://briefnews.eu/off-with-their-hats-russian-military-to-ditch-traditional-headgear/#respond Thu, 04 Oct 2018 14:27:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/off-with-their-hats-russian-military-to-ditch-traditional-headgear/

A large part of Russian military will soon stop using traditional Russian fur hats with ear flaps, known as “ushankas,” as well as woolen side caps. The government plans to replace these items with more simple headgear.

The famous Russian souvenir known abroad as “ushanka”, “shapka” or simply “Russian hat” could soon become a rare curiosity and those who planned to get one should probably act quickly.

That’s because on Thursday the Russian government released new rules for uniform supplies to the military. Officers, generals and female military staff will no longer receive the flashy astrakhan fur hats with ear flaps or woolen side caps, according to the document. Instead they will simply be issued “fur hats”, the document reads.

Colonels, however, will still wear astrakhan “papakha” hats that look like fur buckets – the type worn by Omar Sharif in the 1965 version of the Doctor Zhivago movie.

Although women and men in the Russian military wear Long Johns all year round (thin cotton ones in summer and thicker wool blend ones in winter), female soldiers will now be issued with two pairs of panties per year.

Fur hats with ear flaps were very wide spread in Russia until the end of the 20th century. The Russian names for them are “ushanka” or “ear hat” and “treukh” or “three ears” for those that have flaps at the sides and at the back. In recent times the popularity of such hats has declined in European Russia, partially because of the availability of private cars and perhaps also due to the efforts of anti-fur activists from PETA and Greenpeace.

However, in colder areas, like Urals and Siberia ushankas still hold their popularity as the headgear item of choice.

Tories leak ‘secret plan’ to ditch Theresa May as leader & list of possible successors https://briefnews.eu/tories-leak-secret-plan-to-ditch-theresa-may-as-leader-list-of-possible-successors/ https://briefnews.eu/tories-leak-secret-plan-to-ditch-theresa-may-as-leader-list-of-possible-successors/#respond Thu, 20 Sep 2018 16:24:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tories-leak-secret-plan-to-ditch-theresa-may-as-leader-list-of-possible-successors/ A Tory internal memo that suggests Theresa May will be forced to stand down as leader “soon after March 2019,” and which details a list of pros and cons of possible candidates to replace the PM, has been leaked to the Telegraph.

On the day May’s Chequers Brexit trade proposal has been roundly rejected by the EU 27 nations, the Telegraph revealed they have received a leaked memo, that has reportedly been circulating among Conservative MPs since April. It tells colleagues to “manoeuver [sic] immediately,” suggesting the PM will be removed soon after Brexit deadline day and analyses 27 possible Tory candidates to replace her, including leading Brexiteers Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson.

In a sign of the growing unrest over the direction of the party, the dossier, believed to have been written by a Tory MP in April but re-circulated in recent days, is based on an “assumption” the 1922 backbench committee will invite May to stand down.

The dossier provides a blunt assessment of 27 candidates, both cabinet and non-cabinet MPs, including the “bookies [sic] favourite” Johnson, who is considered an unlikely successor because “the front-runner never wins.” Prominent backbench Brexiteer Rees-Mogg, who is seen as “the party’s favourite,” will be unlikely “to succeed to the last two,” it claims.

It also carries unfavourable assessments of Chancellor Philip Hammond, who, the dossier suggests, is “thinking he has a chance” but “not a hope,” and describes Trade Secretary Liam Fox’s pedigree as “fading.” Former Brexit Secretary David Davis pretends “not to be interested, but is. Won’t succeed,” the document claims.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, receives a more favourable review, with the dossier describing him as the “dark horse” to succeed May, who is “near the front of the pack coming up on the rail.”

The leak comes as 27 EU leaders met in Salzburg, Austria to discuss May’s Chequers Brexit trade plan. “Everybody” at the summit agreed that the proposal “will not work,” according to European Council President Donald Tusk.

Tom Newton Dunn, political editor of the Sun, has tweeted that May had obviously been taken aback by the EU’s response, saying she was “visibly angry and shaking throughout” her post-summit press conference.
