Mischa Barton’s O.C. character coming back from the dead was somehow the least surprising part of Wednesday’s twist-filled BH90210 season — or is it series? — finale, which chronicled the gang’s agonizing wait to find out if Fox was ordering the reboot.

From two paternity surprises to one incestuous moment we’d all rather forget, it was easily the least predictable episode thus far. In fact, let’s just break this one down twist by twist so we can all process it together:

* Despite Shay’s private investigator confirming that Zach isn’t Brian’s biological son, the man formerly known as David Silver decided to serve as a father figure until the real deal is tracked down — which could be sooner than expected, as Jason also recognized Zach’s mom from the photo he gave Brian. So even though Jason lost a wife this week, he might have gained a son.

* Ian was similarly blindsided after hooking up with Denise Richards at a pre-upfront party… only to learn that Anna is her daughter.

* On a more disturbing note, Shannen daydreamed that she (as Brenda) was kissing Jason (as Brandon), the result of some curious observations made by test viewers.

* Tori and Jennie both found themselves questioning their respective relationships; Tori was frustrated by how much effort it takes her husband to overcome his jealousy, while Jennie was simply weirded out that Wyatt got her initials tattooed on his chest.

* Lastly, Christine informed everyone that Fox wants the pilot reshot with a new writer (sorry, Anna!), a new supporting cast (sorry, Kyler!), a new location (Vancouver?!) and one less series regular. BH90210 may have been conceived as a “limited series,” but if Fox decides to keep it going, there’s clearly no shortage of stories to tell.

* And here’s the biggest twist of all: Can you believe we didn’t actually see a single second of the pilot they spent all season producing? I now feel invested in this project and would like to see the fruits of our labor. (If unavailable, I would also settle for a peek at that insane-sounding O.C. reboot.)

Your thoughts on this wild finale? Grade it in our poll below, then drop a comment with your review of the episode (and the season).

Disturbing photos show national parks and monuments overflowing with garbage as the US government shutdown continues https://briefnews.eu/disturbing-photos-show-national-parks-and-monuments-overflowing-with-garbage-as-the-us-government-shutdown-continues/ https://briefnews.eu/disturbing-photos-show-national-parks-and-monuments-overflowing-with-garbage-as-the-us-government-shutdown-continues/#respond Wed, 02 Jan 2019 22:52:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disturbing-photos-show-national-parks-and-monuments-overflowing-with-garbage-as-the-us-government-shutdown-continues/ DC trash lede Win McNamee/Getty Images

  • America’s national parks are overflowing with garbage and human waste as the US government shutdown prevents federal employees from cleaning toilets and picking up trash.
  • While it’s common for national parks to close during a shutdown, the Trump administration has opted to leave them open to visitors.
  • Many parks have been forced to close their campgrounds due to health and safety concerns.

As the US endures the second week of a partial government shutdown, national parks have taken a major hit.

With few rangers or staffers to clean toilets or pick up trash, parks in the American West have started to overflow with garbage and feces.

On Wednesday, Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California temporarily shuttered its campgrounds due to health and safety concerns, according to CNN. The National Park Service attributed the closures to “human waste in public areas.”

Overflowing toilets have also caused a problem for Yosemite National Park, which was forced to close its campgrounds and snow play areas on Sunday.

Excess trash along Generals Highway, which runs through Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park, contributed to the road being shut down.

Even the National Mall in Washington, DC, is strewn with garbage near the Washington Monument and US Capitol.

The filth is unprecedented, even for a shutdown, when it’s common for the government to suspend all operations at national parks — including visitor access.

The Trump administration has opted to leave gates open to the public in the absence of any federal employees.

Many parks are now closing anyway due to health hazards and threats to wildlife safety. Take a look at the state of the nation’s beloved parks and monuments.

Visitors have reportedly witnessed piles of trash spilling out of a public bathroom at Lassen National Forest in Northern California.

‘Disturbing’ revelation in cricket conspiracy https://briefnews.eu/disturbing-revelation-in-cricket-conspiracy/ https://briefnews.eu/disturbing-revelation-in-cricket-conspiracy/#respond Mon, 24 Dec 2018 00:28:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disturbing-revelation-in-cricket-conspiracy/ India coach Ravi Shastri is paying no attention to critics in his home country, accusing his detractors of “firing blanks” ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the same time he tried to clarify a mystifying snub that has Indian fans confused.

Shastri and Kohli faced significant criticism after Australia won the second Test in Perth by 146 runs to level the series. India’s decision to select Umesh Yadav as a fourth quick to replace injured spinner Ravichandran Ashwin backfired badly when man of the match Nathan Lyon claimed eight wickets for the match to spin Australia to victory.

Many commentators were baffled India had overlooked left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja — a situation Shastri wanted to clear up on Sunday when he revealed the all-rounder had been battling soreness after having an injection in his shoulder.

The combative coach also snapped back at his critics, including former skipper Sunil Gavaskar who said India’s recent history of “selection blunders” would put Shastri and Kohli in the firing line if Australia went on to win the series.

“When you’re millions of miles away it’s very easy to fire blanks,” Shastri told reporters. “They’re too far away. We’re in the southern hemisphere.

“So when you look at Perth, we felt that he (Jadeja) was maybe 60-70 per cent fit and that we didn’t want to risk that in Perth. If he was 80 per cent fit here (in Melbourne), he will play.

“He had taken an injection even in India but he played domestic cricket after that. It took longer than we expected, hence we had to be careful.

“The last thing we wanted was someone breaking down after five or 10 overs and then we are stuck for players to pick for Melbourne or Sydney.”

Indian broadcaster Harsha Bhogle called the revelation “disturbing” on Twitter.

SHASTRI ADDS FUEL TO CRICKET MYSTERY

However, Shastri’s blunt responses provided more questions than answers, according to some cricket commentators. Many reports in the Indian media claimed the coach contradicted Kohli, because the captain said before the Perth Test the inclusion of four seamers was purely because of the conditions in the West Australian capital.

Kohli said even if Ashwin was fully fit the team would likely have gone into the match without a frontline spinner because it was confident the pitch would suit the fast men more.

However, if the real reason behind the four-pronged pace attack was because Jadeja wasn’t fit enough to replace Ashwin rather than a burning desire to use four quicks, then the question remains: Why India didn’t play left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav?

That the BCCI didn’t even mention Jadeja’s fitness issues before the second Test makes the mystery even deeper, according to ESPN Cricinfo’s Sidharth Monga.

“When the BCCI sent out a media release with a fitness bulletin on eve of the Perth Test, it didn’t even include Jadeja’s status,” Monga wrote. “Despite repeated inquiries about fitness status of all players all the time, the BCCI media management failed to make this situation known.

“If Jadeja was not fully fit and if the team management indeed wanted to play a spinner, they had Kuldeep Yadav in the squad, who was, not long ago, preferred to Jadeja when India played two spinners in the Lord’s Test.”

Also noted was the fact that despite reportedly not being fit enough to play, according to Shastri, Jadeja was still selected in the 13-man squad and spent significant amounts of time on the Optus Stadium turf as a substitute fielder in Perth.

“More bizarrely, Jadeja, despite the injury, was actively involved in the scheme of things. Since landing in Australia, he played the lone practice game against Cricket Australia XI, bowled 11 overs but didn’t bat, bowled tirelessly in the practice sessions, came on as substitute fielder for a cumulative of 45 overs in both Tests combined, was named in the 13-member squad for the Perth Test, and was fielding in the deep, belting out accurate throws,” an article in the Indian Express said.

“It’s strange for a bowler nursing an injury to be dispatched to the deep, especially where the boundaries are longer than they are in the subcontinent. It stinks of mismanagement.”

The same article also cast doubt over the contradictory explanations for not playing a spinner being spouted by Kohli and Shastri.

“Kohli had clearly mentioned that it was the conditions that prompted the four-pacers-no-spinner strategy, while Shastri kept harking on Jadeja’s fitness, saying that ‘it was their only dilemma’ before the Perth Test,” the article said.

“It’s not the first time that they have contradicted each other’s opinions.

“Agreed that Shastri and Kohli might have different perceptions, but one would expect uniformity in matters pertaining to the team.”

Monga said the mixed messages from India’s captain and coach alluded to an alarming problem in the Indian camp and questioned how Jadeja’s health could deteriorate in Australia when he hadn’t yet played a Test.

“In what should be a serious question against how the players’ injuries are managed, Shastri went on to reveal Jadeja had in fact not been at 100 per cent when he boarded the flight to Australia,” Monga wrote.

“India’s selections and injury management have both been contentious for a while now. India’s last blunder was to play Ashwin when he was not fully fit in Southampton. This time it has come to injury management.

“Would he have been better off going through proper rehab instead of taking injections and bowling in the nets and then fielding for a considerable period of time as a substitute not just in the infield but also in the deep, from where he has to get long throws in?”

BCCI FINALLY STEPS IN

The BCCI issued a statement after Shastri’s explanation for Jadeja’s absence, saying the 30-year-old was fit when he left India but complained of shoulder soreness while playing the warm-up game against the CA XI in Sydney before the first Test in Adelaide.

The conundrum gets murkier still. While Shastri said Jadeja was suffering from his shoulder injury in India, his domestic coach at Saurashtra, Sitanshu Kotak, countered that by claiming the left-arm tweaker was fine when he left for Australia.

“There was no fitness issue at all when he (Jadeja) was playing for Saurashtra. Neither there was any stiffness which you are talking about. Had there been any stiffness or any injury he would have not played Ranji Trophy, or at least he would have told us,” Kotak told The Indian Express.

“He joined the team and had two days nets session before our Ranji Trophy game (against Railways) started. He batted and took part in fielding drills. He was present for four days at the ground. His scores will speak for himself, in two innings he bowled. He batted well for us and scored a hundred too.”

“If he was feeling any pain or stiffness, do you think he would have bowled so many overs? He was perfectly fit when he was with us. I don’t know what happened once he left Saurashtra team. He came to the Ranji Trophy game perfectly fit.”

According to the BCCI’s statement, Jadeja received an injection in India on November 2. He then improved to the point he was able to play for Saurashtra without discomfort, but complained of a flare-up after touching down in Australia.

ASHWIN IN A RACE AGAINST TIME

Ashwin remains in a race against time to play at the MCG with India also weighing up whether to fast-track pace-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya into its XI.

The world’s No. 1 ranked Test team claimed solitary victories in England and South Africa this year but lost both series and will be desperate to avoid a repeat of that outcome in Australia.

“Third time lucky. That’s all I’ll say,” Shastri quipped.

“It’s not often that you find a team these days when they travel overseas where it’s 1-1 in a series with two matches to go.

“So the boys know what they can do, what they’re capable of and the potential that lies ahead.”

Shastri also bristled when asked about Kohli’s behaviour, which has riled plenty of Aussie greats.

“Fantastic — why, what’s wrong with his behaviour?” Shastri said. “People can question; as far as we’re concerned, he’s an absolute gentleman.”

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden suggested Kohli was more Australian than Indian in many ways.

“He plays the game in a very-competitive spirit. He is very animated; very passionate; very emotional,” Hayden told the Mumbai Mirror.

“A lot of Australians at all levels of sport play the game like that.

“As long as there is a line, and I don’t think Virat has crossed that … everything has remained on the field.”

Shastri also had no issue with local broadcasters highlighting a heated exchange between teammates Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja in Perth.

“I’m never surprised by any coverage. Bring it on — it’s as simple as that,” he said.

Emmerdale spoilers: Maya Stepney to target ANOTHER teen as ITV fans spot disturbing clue? https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepney-to-target-another-teen-as-itv-fans-spot-disturbing-clue/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepney-to-target-another-teen-as-itv-fans-spot-disturbing-clue/#respond Fri, 21 Dec 2018 04:39:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-maya-stepney-to-target-another-teen-as-itv-fans-spot-disturbing-clue/

Maya Stepney (played by Louisa Clein) has been playing cruel mind games with underage student Jacob Gallagher (Joe Warren-Plant) in Emmerdale.

The pair have been kissing and meeting up behind the back of her boyfriend and his step-dad David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden).

Although the grooming plot is only just beginning to unfold in the ITV soap, fans are concerned the teacher will strike again.

In fact, some viewers have suggested Noah Dingle (Jack Downham) could be her next victim after she insisted she never thought of Jacob as a child.

She made the shock admission on Tuesday night’s episode when Jacob admitted he was jealous of her relationship with David.

Fans of the show were utterly disturbed by her revelation and took to Twitter to suggest this was not the first time Maya has groomed a boy, and might not be her last.

One wrote: “Wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t the first time Maya has groomed someone but who is next on the list after Jacob? Maybe Noah?”

Another added: “Maya telling Jacob she’s never seen him as a kid is quite chilling. I don’t think this is her first rodeo.”

A third commentator tweeted: “Maya definitely knows what she is doing.”

Someone else said: “Maya’s behaviour is horrendous. I really hope Jacob gets support when it all comes out.”

Others raised concerns about the disturbing scenes and were quick to comment on Maya’s game playing.

One viewer wrote: “I want to gauge my eyes out watching Maya and Jacob, but that’s how I know how well it’s being played! Poor Jacob is so clueless that this is wrong and she is grooming him.”

Another fumed: “What game is Maya playing? Leave Jacob alone!” While third said: “Jacob is in this too deep.”

A fourth added: “The Maya and Jacob storyline is actually making me want to vomit. It’s an important storyline though, grooming by women is still seen as a joke. It also serves as a reminder that families are groomed not just the child.”

Somebody else shared: “This Maya and Jacob story is doing my head in. It’s grooming.”

Despite the backlash for the grooming storyline, Maya star Louisa has defended the plot and insisted it is an “important” story to tell.

On Twitter, she penned: “It is such an important story to tell, however uncomfortable the viewing may be. If it can help one person, then our job is done.

“There are many places to turn to if you have been affected by this storyline. #Barnardos #emmerdale.”

Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.

‘Appalling and disturbing’: Video emerges of revellers burning ‘sick’ Grenfell Tower effigy (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/appalling-and-disturbing-video-emerges-of-revellers-burning-sick-grenfell-tower-effigy-video/ https://briefnews.eu/appalling-and-disturbing-video-emerges-of-revellers-burning-sick-grenfell-tower-effigy-video/#respond Mon, 05 Nov 2018 17:45:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/appalling-and-disturbing-video-emerges-of-revellers-burning-sick-grenfell-tower-effigy-video/

A bonfire party during which a Grenfell Tower effigy was burned while revellers joked about the victims has been branded sick and disgraceful. The video, believed to have been shot in the UK, has been reported to Police.

The distressing footage emerged on social media on Monday. In one Twitter post, uploader Kay Oldroyd tagged police saying she wanted the people in the video –whom she described as “beasts”– to be prosecuted.

Depicting a bonfire garden party, a group of unidentified individuals can be seen placing a homemade model of the North Kensington tower block above a fire. The building was destroyed by a rapidly-spreading fire in June 2017, killing more than 70 people, many of whom were trapped in the upper floors of the building. Some of these residents had called fire services only to be advised to stay in their homes until firefighters made their way to them and cleared a safe evacuation path.

As the cardboard model of the tower block begins to burn, the group of men and women can be heard laughing. One man appears to mockingly say, “stay in your flat” as he re-positions the effigy above burning hot coals. “Help me, help me,” another man shrieks, apparently in jest, as the fire climbs the paper model.

A third man adds: “Didn’t it start on the 10th floor? We should have put it upside down.” A comment about a ‘ninja’ thought to be a racist reference to a victim can also be heard.

The bonfire footage has provoked outrage online and among politicians, with Home Secretary Sajid Javid describing it as “disgusting” behavior. Shadow Secretary Diane Abbott was equally swift in her condemnation of the video.

Speaking to LBC Radio, London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton labelled the incident “appalling and disturbing”.

The video also caused uproar on social media, with many people calling the bonfire “sick” and disrespectful to those who died in the fire.

12 disturbing pictures that show what life is like in an American fraternity https://briefnews.eu/12-disturbing-pictures-that-show-what-life-is-like-in-an-american-fraternity/ https://briefnews.eu/12-disturbing-pictures-that-show-what-life-is-like-in-an-american-fraternity/#respond Sun, 30 Sep 2018 03:03:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/12-disturbing-pictures-that-show-what-life-is-like-in-an-american-fraternity/ The American Fraternity 3Courtesy of Andrew Moisey/Daylight Publishing

For seven years in the 2000s, photographer Andrew Moisey captured what life was like in an unnamed fraternity at an undergraduate university in the US.

A decade later, these shots comprise the bulk of Moisey’s new photobook, “The American Fraternity: An Illustrated Ritual Manual,” published by Daylight Books.

Shot in black and white, the images show candid moments shared between members of the anonymous Greek letter organization. Men drink, vomit, and wrestle; brothers carry pledges in a coffin during an initiation ceremony; women are pictured topless and inebriated, lying down on couches and beds with their eyes closed.

We recently talked to Moisey, a professor of art history at Cornell University, to learn more about his provocative series. Below, take a closer look at 12 shots from “The American Fraternity.”

Editor’s note: Some of the images below show partial nudity and suggest an act of animal cruelty that may make readers uncomfortable.

Between 2000 and 2008, Andrew Moisey photographed members of a Greek letter organization at the University of California, Berkeley.

Moisey, who attended the same college, began to visit the fraternity house after his younger brother became a member. At the time, the professor told us, he had just taken an introductory photography class and always had his camera with him.

Sensing a rare opportunity to observe a fraternity from the inside, he slowly began to take pictures of the organization’s members until “people got used to having [him] around.”

At first, Moisey mainly captured photos of brothers partying and spending time together.

Courtesy of Andrew Moisey/Daylight Books

But after a while, he realized that his project had to “transcend” what people “already knew about fraternity life.”

“It took a long time to get pictures that were more than brothers hanging out, playing video games, and every once in a while, drinking too much,” the photographer told INSIDER.

Moisey believes this common depiction of fraternity life is one reason why people do not “take it seriously” as a culture. “They don’t see how influential [fraternities] can actually be,” he said.

“So I stayed around to see what I would find,” he added.

Over time, the photographer was able to get a more intimate look inside the fraternity.

Courtesy of Andrew Moisey/Daylight Books

Moisey said the members invited him to take increasingly candid photos after seeing his initial work.

“They enjoyed seeing themselves in my pictures,” the professor told us, “even when they were doing things other people might look at as scandalous.”

Four years after he started photographing the brothers, Moisey compiled his work for a show in 2004. “It seemed like a success,” he said. “But I didn’t think I was finished, so I continued shooting.”

Boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez dramatically collapsed after the weigh in for his mega fight rematch with Gennady ‘Triple G’ Golovkin, raising fears over his condition for the bout in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Canelo weighed inside the 160 lbs middleweight limit at 159.1 lbs ahead of the world middleweight championship fight at T-Mobile Arena, with Kazakhstan’s Golovkin weighing in at 159.6.

After the two boxers stepped off the scales, Canelo was checked over by his entourage, donning their conspicuous Mexican flag-themed tracksuits, the fighter instantly falls down.

The Mexican was quickly helped to his feet, as if having suffered a flash knockdown. The most likely reason for the collapse is dehydration as fighters regularly rid their bodies of excess water in order to make their division weight limit before a fight.

Moments before the collapse, the two fighters had faced off with a fired-up Canelo marching straight over and provocatively putting his head on Golovkin’s, sparking a fracas involving members of each fighter’s camp.

When things calmed down, a fractious Canelo rattled off a punch combination for the fans, his behavior in stark contrast to a clam Golovkin, who remained collected throughout.

The two fight for the WBA Super and WBC middleweight titles in a rematch of their bout one year ago, declared a controversial split draw, at the same venue. The winner, barring a repeat of that result, will be regarded as the best middleweight in the sport.

IMAGINE the tale of Sisyphus, the mythical king doomed to spend eternity pushing a boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down, retold by Kafka. The result would be very like the tortuous story of Andreas Georgiou, Greece’s former statistics chief.

Since 2011 Mr Georgiou has faced several criminal charges. One is that he inflated budget-deficit figures, forcing Greece to seek a bail-out and resulting in alleged damages of €171bn ($ 190bn). Another is that he violated his duty by failing to seek approval from the statistical agency’s board before sending the figures to the European authorities.

Although Mr Georgiou was acquitted several times on both charges, the acquittals were annulled and he was retried. In 2017 he was found guilty of a violation of duty. He has now learnt that the Supreme Court had rejected his appeal, rendering the conviction final. It carries a two-year suspended sentence. In May prosecutors said they were refiling the charges that he inflated…
