Disney World has taken the steps to remove the Do Not Disturb signs from resorts in Florida and could be rolled out to others around the world.

The resorts affected so far are the hotels in the Magic Kingdom theme park: Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Bay Lake Tower.

Instead, the sign that can be used by guests will read Room Occupied.

The changes to the privacy of rooms mean that hotel staff are allowed to enter, with a knock beforehand, every day according to Orlando Sentinel.

Under normal circumstances, staff can only enter a room after three days if the Do Not Disturb sign has been on.

It comes in light of the shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people.

On October 1, gunman Stephen Paddock used a room on the 32nd floor of a hotel to injure a further 500 people and hid thousands of rounds of ammunition within the room.

Due to putting a Do Not Disturb sign on his door, it meant the room was not checked for days.

According to Orlando Sentinel, Disney has stated it is due to a number of factors such as “safety, security and the guest experience”,

They haven’t stated that it is directly correlated to the shooting.

Express.co.uk contacted Disney and a representative confirmed the story first reported from Orlando Sentinel was accurate.

Guests who choose to use Do Not Disturb signs should avoid keeping it on for long periods of time.

Having it on for more than three days could alert cleaning staff that something is going on within the room.

A report by KXAN earlier this year stated: “Currently, nearly all major hotels have a 72-hour do not disturb policy to ensure that no more than three days pass that activity within a hotel room is not visible by hotel staff.” 

Not only is it to avoid any suspicious activity, but it is also to ensure the guests are safe and haven’t come into harm.

Many hotels may now be considering shortening this time frame to be allowed entry.

If you stay at a Walt Disney World resort in the coming months, you may have less control over when cleaning and maintenance staff enter your room. 

Some resorts are beginning to replace “Do Not Disturb” signs on guest rooms with signs that say “Room Occupied,” Walt Disney World News Today reports. The change means that resort employees can enter your room while you’re in it, but will attempt to alert you before doing so. Employees are now required to enter every room at least once per day. 

These changes have gone into effect at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Polynesian Village Resort, and Contemporary Resort near the Magic Kingdom, with other Walt Disney World resorts to follow soon, according to Walt Disney World News Today.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but there is speculation that the changes were put into effect to prevent events like the October shooting that killed 58 people at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Many Walt Disney World resorts have rooms that give guests views of crowded areas below.

The Mandalay Bay and its parent company, MGM Resorts International, are facing a number of lawsuits that claim the resort didn’t implement preventive measures that could have stopped the shooting.

The Do Not Disturb sign on a door handle is something guests are able to use when they are staying in a hotel for a bit of privacy.

It signals to cleaners and housekeeping that they are not to enter the room.

Those who use it a lot during a long stay at a hotel could actually be drawing more attention to themselves without realising.

It is mainly due to security reasons.

Most hotels have a ’72-hour’ rule, which means guests can leave the sign on before hotel staff are allowed to enter the room with security.

A report by KXAN states: “Currently, nearly all major hotels have a 72-hour do not disturb policy to ensure that no more than three days pass that activity within a hotel room is not visible by hotel staff.” 

This is to prevent anything unlawful or dangerous happening in the room, and could make guests look suspicious to hotel staff if they never remove it from their door.

However, this is currently being discussed as to whether it should be shortened, after Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas shooter, used the 72 hours to remain undisturbed and to keep hotel staff out from the room he used during the attack.

According to KXAN, Texas Hotel & Lodging Association has contacted hotels stating: “Hotels should consider how best to address DND [Do Not Disturb] policies during major city wide events in which there will be large crowds.”

There is something guests can do to avoid any suspicion when using the sign.

Instead of leaving it on for the entire duration of the holiday, removing it every now and then can make sure it looks normal.

Therefore those who just want some privacy when they are in the room can rest assured they won’t be disturbed.

Things to avoid doing at a hotel can often vary, but there is one item that all travellers should take with them.

A door stop costing just £1 could keep guests safe without them realising.

Holidaymakers should always pack one in their suitcase and put it under their hotel door when they are away from home.

This can then stop people from entering the room in the case of a burglary or something worse.

Quora user David Klain stated” ”You can put that door stop under the door preventing someone from breaking in.

“If they can’t get the door open, move on to other rooms before working their way back to the doors that wouldn’t open.

“This buys you time for you to get away or police to respond.”

Over 100 people rallied outside the City Hall in St. Louis, Missouri on Monday, in the fourth day of protests over a 2011 police killing of an African-American man. The former police officer involved was acquitted by a judge.

Nearly 80 people were arrested over the weekend, as violent protesters smashed shop windows at night in marked contrast with peaceful demonstrations during the day.

On Monday morning, state Representative Bruce Franks Jr, (D-St. Louis) led demonstrators in chants.

“It’s not about peace,” Franks told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as the protest began. “Peace in not an option, but we have to realize that there’s a difference between peaceful and non-violence. Non-violent is an option. The point of action is to disturb. The point of action is to make folks uncomfortable.”

With hands held up in surrender, protesters marched silently down 16th Street in downtown St. Louis, before coming to a standstill outside the City Hall.

Police officers began blocking Market Street and 14th and 17th Streets shortly before 8 am.

At Kirkwood High School, dozens of students staged a demonstration by walking into the football stadium and holding a moment of silence.

Outside the University City High School, about 250 students, clergy, police and activists gathered for speeches and poems. Some students were selling University City T-shirts to raise funds for businesses and others affected during the weekend protests.

The protests began on Friday after former St. Louis patrolman Jason Stockley was acquitted of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the 2011 shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith, following a police chase.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police said peaceful daytime demonstrations on Sunday descended into violence and destruction, during which windows were smashed and property destroyed. More than 80 people were arrested, as police used pepper ball projectiles to clear protesters from downtown St. Louis.

Representative Franks, who owns an insurance office on Cherokee Street, was sympathetic about business that sustained damage during the protests.

“Of course I wouldn’t want anybody damaging my property,” he said, according to the Post-Dispatch. “You gotta understand that the reason why we’re out here is for black lives. The reason we’re out here is because we’re dying, so when we stop  dying, when we stop being affected disproportionately by the system. Then we’ll take a break. But until then we’ll be here.”

Set to make its debut this fall in Apple’s next update to its mobile operating system, iOS 11, Do Not Disturb while Driving builds on Apple’s current Do Not Disturb feature, which can silence alerts, calls, and notifications that are received while a user’s phone is locked. The new “while driving” function adds to this by setting the iPhone’s screen to black and enabling an automatic reply to texts when the phone senses it’s in a moving vehicle. Messages can get past the feature if a contact relays that the message is “urgent,” though. For better or worse, Apple will allow Do Not Disturb while Driving to be turned off by users—a boon for passengers whose phones have wrongly accused them of being drivers, but a curse to those hoping the feature would end iPhone-related distracted driving.

Although Apple’s new Do Not Disturb function is unlikely to solve automotive fatalities or accidents stemming from cellphone distraction, the feature’s introduction does show that the company is paying attention to what’s happening on our roads, unlike too many drivers.
