Joe and Anthony Russo have directed Marvel’s biggest movies with this year’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and its follow-up, “Avengers: Endgame,” which comes to theaters in April. Cuckoos are nest parasites. That means they lay eggs in the nests of other birds, which then put the effort into raising the chicks. So you’d think they’d be quiet about it. Yet female cuckoos have a tendency to make a bubbly, chuckling call while they’re laying their eggs. That’s a strange thing for them to do, because host birds aren’t too fond of cuckoos.
That chuckle doesn’t sound at all like the male cuckoo call. But it does have similarities to the call of the sparrowhawk, which led researchers Jenny York and Nicholas Davies to wonder whether the call might be a purposeful deceit—a ruse to distract the hapless host birds while their nest is being violated. York and Davies’ paper in Nature Ecology & Evolution this week provides evidence that the cuckoo chuckle does indeed seem to distract host birds by making them fear a sparrowhawk attack.
Plenty of species have evolved to mimic predators, often for their own protection. For instance, the wasp beetle mimics a stinging wasp, causing predators to steer away. Cuckoos seem to be a fan of that tactic: some cuckoo species look quite a bit like hawks, and this seems to protect them from mobbing by other birds.
Has the female common cuckoo evolved a cry that imitates a hawk? Both the cuckoo chuckle and the sparrowhawk cry consist of a rapid series of notes with a similar pitch and a similar rhythm. They sound different to a human ear. But, write York and Davies, “manipulation by imperfect mimicry is frequent in the natural world, and resemblance to hawk calls in some key features might be sufficient to trick hosts.” The way to find out is to determine whether the call seems to be effective in freaking out the host birds.
Host birds like reed warblers are wise to the possibility of cuckoo parasitism. They mob adult cuckoos and sometimes reject host eggs in their nests by kicking them out or abandoning the nests altogether. They also “monitor cuckoo activity in the vicinity of their nest and vary these defenses in relation to local parasitism risk,” write York and Davies. Because of this, female cuckoos are quick and stealthy when they lay their eggs—aside from the chuckle call.
York and Davies conducted three studies to compare the effects of the chuckle call and the sparrowhawk call. They filmed reed warblers in their nests and used speakers placed near the nests to play a series of different bird calls: the male cuckoo’s characteristic cuckoo-clock-like call, the female’s chuckle call, the sparrowhawk cry, and (as a control) the call of the extremely unthreatening collared dove. The birds didn’t react to male cuckoo calls or dove calls, but they adopted a vigilant response to hawk calls and the female cuckoo’s chuckle: they began looking around their nests for threats.
But warblers are a target species for cuckoos, so maybe they respond to both as a threat even if they can tell the difference between them. To test this, York and Davies conducted a similar experiment with birds that are prey for the sparrowhawk but not targeted by cuckoos: the great tit and blue tit. The birds reacted vigilantly to both the chuckle call and sparrowhawk call, but not to the dove or male cuckoo call.
It’s possible to explain the cuckoo’s mimicry in evolutionary terms if it buys them more reproductive success—if it increases the likelihood that eggs laid along with a fake hawk call go unnoticed by host birds, who are too busy worrying about being eaten to pay close attention to their nests. So, York and Davies tested whether reed warblers distracted by hawk or chuckle calls might lower their nest defenses.
The researchers faked a foreign, parasitic egg in 75 different reed warbler nests by taking one egg out, painting it brown, and putting it back. Then they played one of the four calls near each nest. The majority of the foreign eggs—66 percent—were rejected in nests that heard male cuckoo or dove calls, but only 26 percent of the eggs in the hawk and chuckle call nests were rejected. That suggests that the chuckle call helps to distract the reed warblers long enough for a foreign egg to go unnoticed.
The results are a nifty example of an evolutionary arms race: cuckoos that have their eggs accepted by the hosts have more babies and fare better in evolutionary terms; meanwhile, host birds that reject the cuckoo egg save their own young. So while host birds, over time, adapt to the cuckoo’s tricks, the cuckoo just adapts to become even trickier.

LONDON (AP) — For eight agonizing minutes, the orders came from all directions, frantic and contradictory.
Crowds scattered, sometimes directly into the path of the men trying to kill them. Police cars screamed past the attackers toward the van they had abandoned. Chairs, bottles and even a basket flew through the air as terrified onlookers tried to hold off the three men and make sense out of the senseless.
Gerard Vowls was across the street from a Barclays bank branch when he heard someone moan, “I’ve been stabbed.” He thought it was a joke. But as the man leaned weakly against a wall, the blood was all too real. Moments later, as one bystander helped the wounded man, Vowls saw the three attackers fall upon a nearby woman with their knives.
“The three guys, yes, they were just stabbing this woman constantly, non-stop the three of them. Just stabbing her from every direction, the three of them around her. Lunging at her,” he said. “I heard them say one thing: ‘This is for Allah.'”
Police cars screeched past the scene, so intent upon the van the attackers had abandoned after plowing it through a crowd at London Bridge that they did not yet know about the mayhem around Borough Market.
Vowls tried to distract the men with knives and warn the unwitting neighborhood filled with crowded restaurants and bars. He shouted as he ran through the streets, according to his account and that of bystanders who believe he saved many lives Saturday night. Doors slammed shut. The attackers retreated from at least one establishment when they were met with a barrage of glass bottles.
In another, Richard Angell was gossiping with friends when a security guard shouted to take cover. A waiter jammed his foot in the door to prevent anyone from pushing in. People overturned tables and ducked under chairs. Food flew through the air.
Images started to cohere. Angell saw someone throw a table and realized it was a “heroic guy who saw what was happening” — apparently Vowls — and was trying to keep the attackers at bay. Vowls said he picked up whatever was handy — chairs, a stool and bottles of beer.
“I went ‘Oi, terrorists, cowards, Oi!'” Vowls said. He was hoping to lure them toward a main road and into the line of fire of police. Still, the squad cars headed the wrong way. Vowls ran back and found a local beat officer, saying he knew where the attackers were. Despite being unarmed in a country where few police carry firearms, the two started back toward the restaurant.
ReutersBy then, full-blown panic had set in at Borough Market.
Rhiannon Owen, a student nurse studying in London, said she was standing at a cash machine when a taxi driver saved her life.
“The taxi driver just swerved toward me and screamed, ‘Run! You have to run! They’ve got a knife!'” she said. “His face was just like something was so wrong, and I just started running as fast as I could. There was sirens everywhere, people screaming, the glass was smashed in one shop. There was a guy, he was injured. I just ran.”
Even as one of the attackers followed behind her, she called out to others to run away. She slipped into a pub where she hid upstairs with 40 others.
Nearby, Florin Morariu was at the Bread Ahead bakery where he works when he glanced out the window and saw people running.
“They were fainting, falling and we went outside to see what was happening,” he said.
Morariu saw men with knives attack someone, and did the only thing he could think of: He hurled a big bread basket he was holding at the attacker’s head.
Moments later, gunshots rang out.
“So many gunshots. We were just lying on the floor like, everyone was introducing ourselves, trying to keep each other calm, giving each other water and stuff,” Owen said.
The three assailants died in the hail of bullets.
Vowls arrived moments later to see the bodies, which wore what looked like explosive vests. Police called out that they were rigged to blow, though Vowls wondered why — if they were real — the men hadn’t detonated them inside one of the pubs.
But that’s not the image that haunts Vowls. He woke from a nightmare before dawn on Sunday.
“I saw a vision of the poor woman being stabbed, and the three guys — the three terrorists — stabbing her, and she was going ‘Help me, help me!’ and then I woke up and I started screaming,” he said.
“I’ll have her in my mind for the rest of my life.”

Lingering sense of ennui creeping in? Concerned about our crumbling infrastructure? Allow me to temporarily assuage your problems by offering up some lovely images of Jupiter. They won’t solve anything, but they just might help you get through day the without shouting into a stranger’s face or kicking over a traffic cone.
The stunning, enhanced-color image above, featured in a news release by NASA today, is based on a photo of Jupiter’s south pole captured by the Juno spacecraft on December 11th, 2016. Juno’s citizen science camera has been snapping glorious images of the gas giant ever since it arrived in orbit around Jupiter last July. The images are then released to the public, which has been turning them into even more magnificent works of space art.
Here’s another one:

And another:

And ANOTHER:

Okay, but seriously, look at this thing:

Besides being an infinite source of beautiful pictures, Jupiter has some other pretty cool stuff going on. Last week, attendees at the European Geosciences Union were treated to some science updates from the Juno spacecraft, including details on Jupiter’s strange ammonia weather and magnetic field, according to a report by New Scientist. The field, already considered the single largest “object” in our solar system, is stranger and even stronger than expected, apparently—who would have guessed!
Surely, Jupiter’s hiding many more mysteries beneath is strange and beautiful exterior. We look forward to discovering them all with Juno.

GUEST:
I had an important “aha” moment recently while teaching teaching an intensive five-day version of the Lean LaunchPad/I-Corps class at Columbia University. The goal of the class is to expose students to the basics of the Lean Methodology – Business Model Design, Customer Development, and Agile Engineering.
In this short version of the class, students (in teams of four) spend half their day out of the classroom testing their hypotheses by talking to customers and building minimum viable products. The teams come back into the class and present what they found, and then they get out and talk to more customers. Repeat for five days. All teams talk to at least 50 customers/partners/stakeholders, and some manage to reach more than 100.
One of the teams wanted to create a new women’s clothing brand. The good news is that they were passionate, smart, and committed. The not so good news is that other than having been customers, none of them had ever been in the fashion business. But, hey, no problem. They had the Lean Startup model to follow. They could figure it out by simply talking to customers and stores that carry unique fashion brands. How hard can this be?!
By the second day the team appeared to be making lots of progress – they had talked to many women about their clothing line and had marched up and down NY stores talking to buyers in clothing boutiques. They built detailed value proposition canvases for each customer segment (young urban professional woman, students, etc.) – trying to match customer pains, gains, and jobs to be done with their value proposition (their new clothing line.) They were busily testing their hypotheses about customer segments and value proposition, seeing if they could find product/market fit.
In listening to them it dawned on me that I had fallen victim to teaching process rather than helping the teams gain insight. I asked them to remind the class what business they were in. “We’re creating a clothing fashion brand,” was the reply. I asked, “And how much fashion brand expertise do you have as a team?” “None, we’re using customer discovery to quickly acquire it.” On the surface, it sounded like a good answer.
But then I asked, “Has anyone on your team asked if any of your 120 classmates are in the apparel/fashion business?” After a moment of reflection they did just that, and eight of their classmates raised their hands. I asked, “Do you think you might want to do customer discovery first on the domain experts in your own class?” A small lightbulb appeared over their heads.
A day later, after interviewing their classmates, the team discovered that when creating a women’s clothing brand, the clothing itself has less to do with success than the brand does. And the one critical element in creating a brand is getting written about by a small group (fewer than 10) of “brand influencers” (reviewers, editors, etc.) in fashion magazines and blogs.
Whoah … the big insight was that how you initially “get” these key influencers – not customers or stores – is the critical part of creating a clothing fashion brand. This meant understanding these influencers was more important than anything else on the business model canvas. The team immediately added brand influencers to their business model canvas, created a separate value proposition canvas for them, and started setting up customer discovery interviews.
The lessons?
Ironically, when I was an entrepreneur I knew and practiced this. When I started a new venture in existing markets, I would spend part of my initial customer discovery attending conferences, reading analysts’ reports, and talking to domain experts to understand current market entry strategies. (None of this obligated me to follow the path of other companies. At times I took this information and created a different strategy to disrupt the incumbents.) But as an educator I was getting trapped in teaching the process not the strategy.
The fashion brand team’s experience was a great wake-up call.
From now on my first question to startups in an existing market is: “Tell me the critical success factors of the existing incumbents.”
Lessons Learned
[This story originally ran on the author’s blog.]
- In an existing market, draw a Petal Diagram with adjacent companies
- Focus part of your initial customer discovery on learning competitive insights.
- Describe how those companies entered the market. What was critical?

]]>The controversy surrounding the role President Donald Trump’s lawyer played in pushing a “peace plan” for Russia and Ukraine on the National Security Council is “an absurd attempt to distract” from Trump’s reforms, the White House told Business Insider on Tuesday.
Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, was at the center of a New York Times report published Sunday that said he hand-delivered a plan to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, before Flynn was asked to resign. The plan reported in the paper involved lifting sanctions on Russia in return for Moscow withdrawing its support for pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine.
“No one in the White House – including the President, Vice President and senior members of the NSC [National Security Council] – has spoken to Mr. Cohen about any Russia-Ukraine peace proposal, and no one has spoken to Andrii Artemenko at all about any matter,” a White House spokesperson told Business Insider on Tuesday, referring to the Ukrainian lawmaker who reportedly helped draft the peace plan.
“In addition, the NSC keeps comprehensive records of documents received, and we have no record of receiving any proposal from Mr. Cohen,” the spokesperson said. “This is another absurd, misleading attempt to distract from the real reform taking place under President Trump.”
The plan’s existence was first reported by The New York Times, which said Cohen met with Artemenko and businessman Felix Sater in a hotel lobby on Park Avenue in Manhattan in late January to discuss it. The Times said Cohen told the publication that he left with the plan in a sealed envelope, which he delivered to Flynn.
Hours after the Times story was published, however, Cohen told The Washington Post that he hadn’t delivered the peace plan to Flynn or discussed it with anyone in the White House.
Cohen then appeared to alter his story again, telling NBC News that even if he had taken an envelope with a peace plan to the White House, “So what? What’s wrong with that?”
Finally, on Monday afternoon, Cohen told Business Insider in a series of text messages that he denies “even knowing what the plan is.”
In a later message, however, Cohen acknowledged that he met with Artemenko in New York for “under 10 minutes” to discuss a proposal that Artemenko said “was acknowledged by Russian authorities that would create world peace.”
“My response was, ‘Who doesn’t want world peace?'” Cohen said.
One of the Times reporters who broke the story, Scott Shane, pointed Business Insider to a statement the newspaper’s deputy managing editor gave on Sunday: “Mr. Cohen told The Times in no uncertain terms that he delivered the Ukraine proposal to Michael Flynn’s office at the White House. Mr. Sater told the Times that Mr. Cohen had told him the same thing.”
Sater, a businessman of Russian descent who has boasted of his “relationship with Trump,” told the Post last May that he “handled all of the negotiations” for the Trump Organization’s dealings in Russia in the mid-2000s. Trump has distanced himself from Sater, insisting in sworn testimony as part of a 2013 lawsuit that “if [Sater] were sitting in the room right now, I really wouldn’t know what he looked like.”
