Warning: The following contains spoilers for Emily in Paris‘ finale. Proceed at your own risk!

Oh la la, Emily in Paris‘ season concluded with quite a torturous cliffhanger for fans of the “will they or won’t they?” relationship between the titular heroine and her handsome neighbor Gabriel.

Let’s briefly recap: Realizing that his best chance at opening his own restaurant was in Normandy, Gabriel announced that he was moving — and soon! Since his girlfriend Cami wasn’t about to leave her life in Paris, that meant the couple was officially broken up. Emily, too, was shocked by Gabriel’s big move, but at the same time, she was happy for her friend and his new venture. The pair said their awkward goodbyes, but that wasn’t how Emily wanted to leave things with Gabriel, so she rushed back to the restaurant where he works and the two passionately kissed, before taking things to the bedroom. As they lay in his bed, Gabriel noted that Normandy is not that far away.

“It’s not that I can never see you again. It’s just that I don’t think I should ever see you again,” Emily replied. After all, Cami is also her friend. “We’d both be hurting someone that we care about a lot.”

Emily in Paris FinaleThe next day, Emily found Gabriel back at the restaurant instead of on his way to Normandy. Surprise! He’s buying the Parisian restaurant, with the help of Antoine’s financing. The happy moment was then broken up by a potentially troublesome text from Cami to Emily: “I just heard from Gabriel. He’s staying in Paris. Can we talk??”

So what does the message mean?! “Nothing is sort of exactly as it seems to [Emily],” creator Darren Star cryptically hints, “and I think a lot of her ideas about life are constantly tested. And they will be next season, as well.” (The show’s Season 2 fate is To Be Determined, for the record.)

As for Gabriel’s decision to stay, his feelings for Emily are at the forefront of his mind and his choice. “I think Emily gave him purpose again, and he had enough strength around her that he felt like he could go further with his restaurant project and actually make it happen, [whereas] he didn’t have that strength before with Camille,” Lucas Bravo, who plays the chef, tells TVLine. “Based on that, he sees Emily as his pillar, his main inspiration, his strength.”

So when Antoine offers to help Gabriel, “he’s just like, ‘OK, planets are aligned,’” Bravo continues. “And she’s also the reason why he knows [Antoine]. She’s the reason why he’s going to have another opportunity, and she’s connected to everything that is happening. So she’s, obviously, the main reason he’s so happy about staying.”

Meanwhile, Emily is both “deeply conflicted” and “really excited” following Gabriel’s big news, star Lily Collins describes. “She’s now more confused than ever, because Cami and her have created this real bond, and she is all about her girlfriends. But at the same time, he’s been the [constant] throughout her experience so far, being supportive and being a friend, but also something a little bit more.”

So what does the future hold for the would-be couple, should the series get renewed? “What happens in the next chapter, I think, can be a real exploration of how does the relationship between these three characters evolve,” Star previews. “That, to me, is such a fun thing to explore in Season 2, because these are not Americans. They’re French people. To me, a big part of the show is looking at everything through a different lens. Season 2 will open up some interesting and surprising relationship avenues.”

Emily in Paris NetflixPlus, there’s the issue of if Emily and Gabriel pursue a relationship, are they doing something wrong, especially in light of the fact that their attraction began — and a kiss transpired — while Gabriel was still dating Cami? “I think it’s really sticky,” Collins admits. “I’d probably steer clear of that, because there’s obviously been so much going on with Gabriel and Cami’s relationship. When you go to the Loire Valley and see the family and how they all interact, there’s such a deep history there. I would just let things settle.”

For his part, Bravo believes Emily and Gabriel are “definitely not in the good, this is wrong, but this is also exciting,” he says. “I think they’re both kind of lost. She’s lost in Paris, and he’s lost in his feelings. So that’s what happens, I guess, when two lost people find each other.”

And Gabriel isn’t the only man pursuing Emily in the French capital: Thinking that Gabriel had already left for Normandy, Emily agreed to go to Saint-Tropez with fashion exec Mathieu. But never fear, because as Collins puts it, “I don’t see them being a great match. I see that as more of a distraction.”

Warning: The following contains spoilers from the Feb. 24 episode of The Good Doctor.

The Good Doctor reached a moment of clarity on Monday, in an episode that will forever change the Freddie Highmore-led medical drama.

In the antepenultimate episode of Season 3, Shaun admitted to himself that while he did in fact love his ex-girlfriend Carly, the person that he wants to be with is Lea. But when he confessed his love to his best friend and said that he wanted to be her boyfriend, her response was not what he had hoped it would be — at least not entirely.

“I love you, too,” she said. “But you know me. I am selfish, and I am so, so needy… I am a total mess,” and “you need things a certain way.” That’s when Shaun posed a difficult (and truly heartbreaking) question: “Because I have autism?” he asked. “You don’t want to be my girlfriend because I have autism?” Lea couldn’t bring herself to answer. Overcome with emotion, she walked out of the apartment without saying another word, as a single tear dropped from Shaun’s eye.

In separate interviews, TVLine spoke with Highmore (who also directed the episode), as well as his co-star, Paige Spara, about that pivotal Shaun/Lea moment and where the series’ central couple goes from here.

TVLINE | Freddie, this is the second episode you’ve had the chance to direct, following Daniel Dae Kim’s Season 2 debut. What was different about this experience from your last?
HIGHMORE |  Last year, it was really exciting to introduce Dr. Han, and to kick the end of the season off in a new direction. This was a little bit [different]. You had this one especially big moment [at the end of the episode between Shaun and Lea] that was a long time coming.

TVLINE | Paige, when did it dawn on you just how big of a moment this was in the Shaun/Lea relationship? There’s really no turning back after that final scene…
SPARA | When it finally hit me differently was actually when we were rehearsing the scene… I couldn’t say [the words] without getting emotional, and that’s never happened to me before. Then I was nervous because I was, like, “Okay, is that going to happen every take?”

the good doctor season 3 episode 16 shaun freddie highmoreTVLINE | It must have been special to have Freddie direct this particular episode. Did the two of you take a second to acknowledge the significance of this one, and what it means for your characters moving forward?
SPARA | Yeah, absolutely. You know, he’s such a great director and partner to have because he’s so generous with his time, and he really gives you space to kind of understand this pain individually and what it means for you, and then he’s able to go at it from that angle, giving you that emotional freedom to kind of feel what you need to feel for that scene, and then he’ll work around that. Toward the end of the scene, it was even hard for me to say the lines.

TVLINE | It sounds like the scene was ultimately shaped by the conversation.
SPARA | It was originally written, “I’m so sorry, Shaun,” and then I kiss his cheek and walk away.

TVLINE | But instead it was just—
SPARA | … Just look at him and convey however you feel to Shaun in that moment, and walk away when you feel like you need to walk away. And to get that freedom, especially with network TV, is very rare… and the fact that [Freddie] knew what that scene entailed and what it called for, and actually gave me permission to do that, that was huge. I feel like it made the scene what it was actually supposed to be about, yet relatable to anyone who has dealt with such a hard conversation.

TVLINE | It sounds like Freddie was able to construct the scene in a way that might not have happened had you been in the hands of a different director.
SPARA | Absolutely. Freddie [has] such a curious mind when it comes to relationship dynamics and why things are the way they are, and he can pull from that curiosity and apply it to [the scene], as opposed to just getting the take, getting the boxes checked. It’s never about that for him. His work always… comes from a place of openness and curiosity, and I think that is just so needed, especially for [relationship drama], because, you know, what the f—k are relationships? They’re so f—king confusing…

TVLINE | Freddie, what stood out to you when you first read the script?
HIGHMORE | It’s always much more interesting to leave things unsaid, or leave things hinted at when one can, instead of being overly explicit. The last scene is an example of that. [Executive producer] David Shore is aware of that, and [fellow EP] David Hoselton, the writer on this episode, [does] such a good job of making those emotional moments land without them feeling overwritten.

TVLINE | What did you make of Lea’s inability to respond when Shaun asked if his autism is preventing them from being together?
HIGHMORE | I think that Shaun has hit on a horrible truth that Lea has perhaps not thought about before this moment. Her lack of response… at least signals that there’s something [to] what Shaun is saying.

TVLINE | Paige, what is your take on Lea’s response (or lack thereof)? Was she reckoning with this horrible truth, as Freddie suggested? Was she too overwhelmed to get out words?
SPARA | I think it was just a cluster of both of those [things]… Lea does love Shaun. Lea does have a bond with Shaun. That would be her person. However, would she be the person for him? I can’t be selfish in this moment and just say, “I love you. Let’s give this a shot.” There are so many other outside factors that are at play here, and… it’s this uncomfortable reckoning of being responsible for someone else, not just under the umbrella of love, but in a different way for someone else’s wellbeing… and I think that hit her in that moment. That’s why it’s just so overwhelming [and] a bit confusing.

the good doctor season 3 episode 16 lea paige sparaTVLINE | What sort of thoughts do you think are racing through Lea’s mind?
HIGHMORE | I think there’s a part of her that sort of hates herself in this moment. She feels that Shaun is the person that she should be with, and she recognizes that they’ve got this bond, or that they share these kindred spirits, but for whatever reason — and perhaps it has to do with the question that Shaun asks — she just can’t commit to [him], and she doesn’t understand that about herself. She’s questioning whether she’s a good person for even thinking these things or having those thoughts in her head.
SPARA | I think she hates the fact that she is feeling this kind of way, and she’s looking in the eye of this [man] that love her, and she just doesn’t know what to do with it. What does it mean and where [does] it fit in her life and in his life? … I think it’s really hard for her to not know that answer in that moment. And it’s also scary because even when she looks ahead, she still doesn’t see an answer, and then she’s just feeling very, very vulnerable and also admitting the love that she has.

TVLINE | How do you expect the audience to react to Lea’s silence?
HIGHMORE | One of the really important things [to remember], and hopefully that comes across about this last scene, is [that the audience shouldn’t hate Lea] for feeling the way that she feels. She isn’t prejudiced toward Shaun because he has autism. It’s not as simple as that.

TVLINE | Moving forward, has Shaun lost hope that he’ll ever be with Lea?
HIGHMORE | He’s a pretty dogged person, so he doesn’t see this as being… something that they can never get past, or discuss to try and understand [Lea’s feelings] on a deeper level.

TVLINE | Where do we pick up in the following episode?
SPARA | You’ll find these characters addressing that conversation and addressing the questions that were brought up… We will see Shaun handle it in his way, Lea handle it in her way, and when those two ways come together, we’ll actually see why Lea [was] hesitant in the first place.

This Is Us EPs Dissect That Huge Twist, Confirm Resolution of 'Her' Mystery https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-eps-dissect-that-huge-twist-confirm-resolution-of-her-mystery/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-eps-dissect-that-huge-twist-confirm-resolution-of-her-mystery/#respond Wed, 28 Nov 2018 13:41:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-eps-dissect-that-huge-twist-confirm-resolution-of-her-mystery/ Warning: This post contains spoilers from This Is Us‘ fall finale. Proceed with caution.

Right from the beginning of this season, This Is Us‘ showrunners say, the series planned to reveal that Jack’s brother Nicky hadn’t actually died during the Vietnam War.

And now that Tuesday’s fall finale let viewers in on the secret, the question becomes: How long did Jack know — if he knew at all — that his little brother hadn’t perished when he thought he had?

“There’s definitely a possibility that Jack knew more than he was letting on to the family over all those years,” co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker tells TVLine. “We will be on this mystery with Kevin as he tries to uncover what happened to his uncle, what his dad knew about it, and where [Nicky] might be in 2018.”

Aptaker and co-showrunner Elizabeth Berger fielded more of our fall finale-related questions, including whether “she” and “her” in the flash-forward refer to the same person (what? we like to be thorough) and what significance a children’s party game might have in the Pearsons’ future. Read on for their answers.

This Is Us Nicky Alive Season 3 Episode 9TVLINE | Is the midseason finale the last of the Vietnam-set scenes, or will there be more?
APTAKER | There’s more after the holiday. We’re going to tell the completion of our cliffhanger, of Jack jumping into the water when he heard that explosion and learn more about what happened over there.

TVLINE | Will we see what happened to Nicky after everyone believed he’d died?
BERGER | Yes, we will actually be seeing him in more than one time period, post-war, and we are definitely going to be meeting him in present-day.

TVLINE | Is Kevin’s discovery something that Kevin will share immediately with his family? Or might he hold onto it until he’s got more concrete information?
BERGER | That’s a good question and it’s one Kevin will definitely be grappling with. Obviously, the Pearsons are a close-knit bunch and they can be high-drama so I think he knows once he lets them into this it could have repercussions and obviously everybody will bring their own viewpoints and opinions to it. But at the same time, they are an incredibly close family, so it’s hard to imagine him not letting them into this at some point.

TVLINE | Let’s deal with that flash-forward. Beth mentions that they’re going to see Randall’s mother. We’re talking about Rebecca there, right? Can you put a fine point on that for us?
APTAKER | Yes. It’s so funny — this is a total accident on our part. We thought, “Let’s give a really clear answer. We want people to know what this is.” And everybody is wondering if that’s what she meant. It never even occurred to us that she might mean Randall’s biological mother, because she has been [dead] for so long… But yes, we can confirm: You heard it here first, she is speaking about Rebecca.

TVLINE | I don’t take anything with this show for granted anymore.
APTAKER | [Laughs] That’s smart.

TVLINE | So the “she” that Toby refers to in the flash-forward also is Rebecca?
APTAKER | Yes. The “she” and the “her” is Rebecca.

TVLINE | The facility that we see Beth in, she’s working there?
APTAKER | Yes, that’s her place of work.

TVLINE | What can you tell me about how things stand with her and Randall at that point in the future?
BERGER | That is one where people are going to have to stick around for the journey of what happens between the two of them. Obviously, we’re leaving them in our present-day in a very tense moment. But [a lot of time passes] before we get to that moment in the future. We’re not quite saying yet what has become of them. But we will be revealing everything as we move through this season and the next seasons.

TVLINE | The Pin the Tail on the Donkey appearance had me casting back into all of the This Is Us lore I know — it’s something that was played at The Big 3’s birthday parties.
APTAKER | Very good!

TVLINE | Is there a significance to that game beyond what’s happening in that scene?
APTAKER | There’s definitely a significance to that game. The full significance of it we have not totally explored or revealed on the show yet. But yes, it’s something that was in their childhood growing up that we’ve seen them playing at the birthday party before. So it’s not a new, out-of-nowhere game for the family. It’s something that’s part of the fabric of their childhood.

TVLINE | How long will we have to wait before we get another update on the flash-forward? Will we get another this season? Might there be more than one?
APTAKER | Yeah, we’ll be checking back into the future again this season. It’s something that we’ve had since the beginning with Dan [Fogelman, series creator]. And the thing that we spend hours debating with our writers is when it’s time to dole out another piece of that future timeline and give some more answers. We’ll definitely be back there this season — not a ton.
