The Gunners beat Vorskla Poltava 3-0 to guarantee top spot in their group and had teenagers Emile Smith Rowe and Joe Willock to thank. The pair lined up in a youthful side picked by Emery as Arsenal made light work of their opponents in Kiev. It was Willock’s first senior goal for Arsenal with Smith Rowe netting his second goal in as many European starts. Smith Rowe was delighted with the win and is determined to be involved for Unai Emery’s side. He said: “My fingers and my toes are very cold, but you’ve just got to get on with it. “It was a good win for us and a few lads got their debuts, so we’re just happy to get the win. “Every cup we’re in we want to win. We’re improving in every game and I’m very happy to be involved.” Smith Rowe also opened up on his goal in the freezing Kiev temperatures. “I’m very happy but it’s more important that we won today,” he added. “I was a bit shocked [about the disallowed goal] but because there wasn’t a lot of fans no one was celebrating. “I thought it was offside as well, but it’s happened and I’m happy to just score anyway.” It was Callum Hudson-Odoi who stole the headlines for Chelsea as they thumped PAOK Salonika 4-0 at Stamford Bridge. The 18-year-old scored his first goal for the club after being handed an opportunity by Maurizio Sarri. Hudson-Odoi was involved in everything good for the Blues as Olivier Giroud netted twice and Alvaro Morata came off the bench to score. And Sarri praised the youngster following the win. He said: “I think that he played very well but the type of match was for his characteristics. “They had ten men after seven minutes, he is able to play in this and I want to see him when we have to play more in the defensive phase. “The goal will give him confidence, like Giroud and Morata. I am very happy with this. Two strikers scored and that is very important.” Hudson-Odoi revealed after the match what it meant to score his first goal for Chelsea. “We got early goals which gave us the confidence that we needed, we are back to normal,” he said. “I couldn’t believe I got the opportunity to start. Every time I got the ball I wanted to do my stuff. I couldn’t believe it when I scored, to see the crowd jumping was a dream. “I will keep striving to play for my club. Hopefully more opportunities will come. I am always eager to play but it is the coach’s decision. “I will celebrate tonight with my family.” Chelsea return to action against Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday (12pm). Arsenal face rivals Tottenham in the first north London derby of the season (2.05pm).

The social network created the devices with video chats in mind, giving them AI-powered cameras that can track you as you move around while talking to friends and family. It can call anyone on Messenger, not just someone who also has a Portal, so you can use it to call most people in your friends list. Engadget Senior Editor Devindra Hardawar got the chance to see it in action in October and found that the picture on screen shifted smoothly to keep the person in frame. He said it looked even better in portrait mode — almost as if the other person were truly in the same room.
In addition to its AI-powered cameras, Facebook’s Portal devices also have built-in access to Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant, along with a bunch of security features. It has a camera and microphone off button, a camera lens cover and the ability to set up a four-to-12 digit passcode. Facebook is also attempting to allay any misgivings by publishing details about the devices’ security.
It said it will “not listen to, view or keep the contents” of Portal video calls, and hence cannot use them for advertising purposes. Presumably, that means you won’t suddenly get, say, diaper ads if you use the device to plan a baby shower for your BFF. Also, Portal calls are encrypted, and the social network says it will not show Facebook ads on the device at all.
The 10-inch Portal (with a 1280 x 800 screen) will set you back $ 199, while the 15-inch Portal+ (with a 1920 x 1080 pivoting display) will cost you $ 349. However, you can get $ 100 off the total price if you’re buying any two of them this holiday season, so you can give the other one to a friend or a family member you talk to all the time.

]]>The same thing is slowly happening with head-up displays (HUD). For example, the 10-inch HUD in the 2018 Toyota Camry isone of the largest and best HUDs I’ve seen in any car. And a big improvement on the much smaller HUD in the latest Toyota Prius.
Mazda is another mainstream brand that offers HUDs in several of its vehicles. But instead of embedding expensive components in the dash and using a special windshield, the HUDs in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 use a thin plastic lens that folds down when not in use. MINI has a similar solution, but this low-cost approach has limits in terms of size and position of the images compared to traditional HUDs that use the windshield as a screen.
We’re also starting to see similar lens-based aftermarket options that can be added to any car. Last year I tested a portable HUD called Navdy that taps into a car’s OBD-II port to provide info on speed and RPM and uses built-in GPS and Google Maps to show the surrounding area, display speed limits and route you to your destination.

Navdy also connects to an Android or iOS smartphone via Bluetooth to display data from phone calls, texts and music playing on a connected device, and it’s simple to use and easily visible in almost any lighting condition. While Navdy is still available online, late last year the company ran into financial difficulties, and product support has been halted.
I recently tested a new portable HUD called Hudly that’s not quite fully baked and falls short of Navdy because it doesn’t tap into an OBD-II port. Since a companion smartphone app for Hudly isn’t scheduled to launch until next month, for now it only mirrors what’s on a smartphone. So it can be used for nav and other apps, and its features are very limited.
Between automakers adding HUDs in more reasonably priced cars and the aftermarket filling in the gaps for existing vehicle owners with add-ons, the technology is becoming more prevalent and affordable. And it’s also getting better.
A few years ago I tested a prototype HUD from tier-one supplier Continental that uses augmented reality (AR) to add an extra layer of dynamic information in a driver’s line of sight. For example, when approaching a turn with a destination set by the navigation system, instead of a static arrow pointing the way, Conti’s AR HUD overlays a colored pathway on the road to guide the driver through the maneuver, which is especially helpful when negotiating complicated intersections on an unfamiliar road.
The AR HUD also improves driver assist systems by providing distinct alerts. Coupled with lane departure warning, it projected a line of virtual raised markers onto the road’s painted lane lines, while the test vehicle’s vibrating-seat warning feature made it feel as if the tires were running over real Botts Dots when it veered off course and over the virtual markers.
The 2017 Lincoln Continental (appropriately enough) and the 2018 Lincoln Navigator use a digital micromirror device (DMD) technology that Continental (the supplier) calls “a bridge between head-up displays and augmented reality solutions” to provide brighter and sharper images than conventional HUDs and a larger display area so that more info can be shown. Conti says that it plans to have the full AR HUD that I tested in production by 2023.

HUD technology isn’t new; it first appeared in an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme in 1988. We’ve been waiting 30 years for HUDs to be available in a wider variety of vehicles, and it seems we’re on the verge of the technology finally going mainstream.
And now that cars — and drivers — are becoming saturated with tech, it can’t come soon enough.

Light Field Lab has raised $ 7 million for holographic display technologies that the company says will make you wonder whether what you’re seeing is real or an illusion.
The money comes from Khosla Ventures and Sherpa Capital, with participation from R7 Partners. It’s a large amount of money for a seed round, but the startup is very ambitious.
San Jose, California-based Light Field Lab will use the funding to complete a prototype of its light-field display systems, which it says will enable real holographic objects to appear as if they are floating in space without the aid of accessories or head-mounted gear.
Jon Karafin, CEO of Light Field Lab, said in an interview with GamesBeat that the hope is to eventually create something akin to the fictional Star Trek Holodeck, where illusion and reality are indistinguishable. In the near term, the company is creating prototype displays that will show very high-resolution images in a 3D space.
“We are very excited to work with these investors,” Karafin said. “We are building a truly holographic projection wall.”
The walls could be placed on floors or ceilings, and then they would project holographic images into a 3D space.
“Light Field Lab has the potential to change the way we view and interact with media,” said Khosla Ventures founder Vinod Khosla, in a statement. “This is essentially the holy grail of optical display technology, enabling things that seem like science fiction to be possible today. We are thrilled to be in on the ground floor with the team, and look forward to helping evolve this exciting technology.”
The initial modules are six inches by four inches, and they can project images into a 3D space. The production modules will be something like 2 feet by 2 feet, and they will have a resolution of 16K by 10K, far more dense than the 4K, two-dimensional screens we use today in high-end TVs, Karafin said.
“When you get these types of resolutions, you are no longer able to tell the difference between the real and the synthetic,” he said. “When you look at a display, you know it is a display. This is a true window into a world.”
Those 2-feet-by-2-feet modules will be stitched together to make 100-feet wide screens, with huge images that could be used at venues such as theme park attractions, concerts, and other events. The initial customers in the space will be theme parks or location-based entertainment, Karafin said.
“Projecting holograms is just the beginning,” said Karafin. “We are building the core modules to enable a real-world Holodeck. The strategic guidance offered by our investors is critical to enable these breakthrough technologies.
Light Field Lab will target its real-world holographic experiences at both professional and consumer markets with a complete system. Eventually, it hopes to build holographic video walls with hundreds of gigapixels of resolution.
The company was founded in 2017 by Karafin, Brendan Bevensee, and Ed Ibe. But Karafin said he had been thinking about the challenge for a decade. The company has a handful of employees and contractors now, and it would expand during 2018. The team had experience working at Lytro in the past.
“Our core premise is to take the accessories like glasses and headsets off the body,” Karafin said. “They don’t give you a true immersive experience. With us, you can project out life-size things that are directly in the room with you. It is as if you have a digital blank canvas and can transport anyone to any world. When you have that, you have the Holodeck. That is what we are building toward.”

Kate Middleton, 36, was out in London today, and the Duchess showed off her growing baby bump.
The mum-of-two was launching the pilot of a website aimed at giving primary school teachers practical resources to help support the mental health of their pupils.
Kate gave the green light to the initiative during a visit to a London primary school helping to trial the online portal coordinated and financed by the duchess’ Royal Foundation.
The free website for schools, called Mentally Healthy Schools, is expected to be available to primary’s nationwide in the spring after being monitored and reviewed.
Kate chose an entirely blue outfit for the appearance, perhaps hinting that she is expecting a baby boy in April.
The Sportmax coat, which she last wore on a visit to the Emma Bridgewater factory in 2015, featured large lapels which came down in a deep v, and Kate kept her neck covered with a scarf.
The Beulah London scarf, £95, was made up of a print of many blue shades to complement the coat.
She paired the coat, which is now sold out but originally cost $ 2490, with a pair of suede court shoes and blue sapphire drop earrings.
The unusual earrings were in the shape of a small leaf, and featured delicate diamonds arround the sapphire centre.
Kate kept her makeup minimal for the day out, wearing lip balm and mascara but not much else.
Even her nails were plain, with the Duchess choosing not to wear any polish on her fingernails.
As usual, her hair was blow dried into a bouncy style which came down over her shoulders.
A blue skirt could be seen peeping out from underneath the Duchess’ coat when she bent down to speak to children at the school.
Kate has had a busy couple of weeks, visiting Wimbledon last week in a chic coat which she changed out of to put on a tracksuit.
The orange coat was from high street retailer Boden.
Kate appeared to wear a nude dress or skirt underneath the coat and added simple black heels to the look.

We spend a lot of time reading about the differences between display technologies like LCD and OLED, which, like all display technologies, are built to fool our eyes into seeing things that are only simulated, not real, like colors, or realistic movement. But it helps to see it in action.
A video from YouTube channel The Slow Mo Guys (originally reported on by Motherboard) vividly illustrates how CRT, LCD, and OLED displays work by either zooming in very close or by recording in insane frame rates at ultra slow motion.
You’ll still find enthusiasts who insist that it’s all been downhill since CRT monitors and TVs went sunset for most of the market. While this video doesn’t make much of a case for CRT’s relative quality, it does show that they were engineering marvels for their time.

A bookstore in New York arranged a series of books that sent a sharp message in response to President Donald Trump’s inflammatory remarks that have sparked outrage in the US and abroad this week.
The Rough Draft Bar & Books displayed a collection of several books written by authors from parts of the world that Trump reportedly described as “shithole countries.” There’s a sign in the middle of the display that reads: “WRITERS FROM S##THOLE COUNTRIES.”
“I think that the positive statement of our collection of books stands on its own,” Anthony Stromoski, a co-owner at the bookstore and a former teacher, told Business Insider on Friday night. “As a former teacher, my students from Africa, the Caribbean, South Asia, and Latin America were the strongest, smartest, hardest working people that I’ve ever met.”
Some of the books on display include works written by Chigozie Obioma of Nigeria and the late activist and former South African president, Nelson Mandela.
Trump allegedly made his remarks in reference to immigrants hailing from Haiti and other African countries during a Thursday meeting with lawmakers on US immigration policy.
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here,” Trump allegedly said, according to a Washington Post report.
Lawmakers who attended the meeting with Trump appear to be divided over the veracity of the report, with some confirming the account, while others said they “do not recall” the alleged comment.

Before the start of CES 2018, the only real smart speakers with a display were the Amazon Echo Show and the Echo Spot. But now that Google has partnered with several manufacturers to make a whole line of Echo Show rivals, a bona fide new device category has been born: the smart display. And based on the devices revealed this week, I believe the smart display will slowly start to outnumber smart speakers and will likely be the norm going forward.
The simple reason for this argument is that the display makes such devices much more useful. Sure, you could have Alexa or Google Assistant tell you there’s a Starbucks 1.5 miles away from you. But wouldn’t it be nice to actually see where it is on a map? Or if you wanted to know the time, you could just, you know, look at the screen. Or if you wanted to know who the artist of the song is but couldn’t be bothered to interrupt the track, you could do the same. That extra visual layer is really useful, especially for quick, glanceable information.
Of course, you could’ve made this same argument months ago when the Echo Show debuted. But these new Google Assistant displays are so much better in almost every way. For example, when you make a search query, it won’t just spit out a short generic answer with the transcript showing up on-screen; it’ll actually appear in a way that makes sense. So if you search for “cornbread recipe,” the display will offer an array of recipes to choose from. Tap on one and you’ll be presented with a lovely step-by-step recipe guide, all without having to install any additional skill or action.
Or if you ask a Google Assistant smart display to play relaxing music, it won’t pick out a random playlist and start playing a song you don’t want (something that happens quite frequently with the Echo). Instead, it’ll offer a visual selection of playlists, which you can then scroll through and pick the one you want. Perhaps my favorite feature is when you ask for directions. It will not only show you the map on the screen but also send those same directions straight to your phone without you having to ask.
Plus, Google has now opened the door for so many more companies to start making smart displays. At CES, we saw Lenovo, JBL and LG show off their versions, each with very different designs. Eventually, even more companies will join the fray, adding their own spin on what a smart display looks like. With so many options on the market, there’ll soon be a smart display for every kind of home. Amazon might’ve introduced the smart-display concept, but Google will be the one to democratize it.
And this is just the beginning. Smart displays can be incorporated in more than just a little 10-inch prop on the table. Personal assistants are already in smart fridges from LG and Samsung, so it doesn’t take much imagination to think that Alexa and Google Assistant displays could take over the rest of your home. Imagine a smart display not only on the front of your fridge but also in the kitchen TV or maybe the bathroom mirror. Soon smart displays will be everywhere. CES 2018 was just the beginning.

]]>After cramming the Google Assistant into smartphones, tablets, laptops, TVs, watches, speakers, and headphones, Google is launching yet another form factor: smart displays.
Remember the Amazon Echo Show? This is the Google Assistant version of that. Why settle for just a voice assistant when you can slap a screen on a “smart speaker” and read some of your query results?
CES 2018 is when Google Assistant smart displays will arrive. No first-party “Google Home Show” has launched yet, but LG, Sony, JBL, and Lenovo are all signed up to produce the devices. Lenovo (and probably others, soon) will show off what the devices are going to probably look like. Google says the devices will arrive “later this year.”
