All of them have received non-life threatening wounds, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The incident occurred when reporters were about to return from the Syrian town of Douma, the last militant-held stronghold in the eastern Ghouta area. NTV broadcaster correspondent Aleksey Ivliyev, Rossiya 1 cameraman Mikhail Vitkin and Zvezda TV cameraman Vladislav Dodonov received non-life threatening leg wounds during the attack.

“All injured journalists immediately received necessary on-site medical assistance by medics from the Russian Center for Syrian reconciliation. Their lives are not in danger,” the ministry said in a statement. The journalists have been evacuated to a hospital to receive further treatment, the ministry added. One of the injured journalists, NTV’s Ivliyev has already contacted his channel, confirming the events.

REN TV’s correspondent Valentin Trushin has provided his account of the incident. The skirmish was prompted by flags put up by the group the journalists arrived with.

“The civilians were fraternizing with the servicemen, taking photos, everything was fine…” Trushin told the channel. “We’ve boarded the bus – and then shooting erupted. Turns out they’ve fired into the air. The militants swarmed the area and tried to disperse the civilians and take down the flags. A flag was torn down. Civilians pelted the militants with stones and then one of them got hit. The militant then fired erratically and hits our bus.”

The journalists were spared from sustaining more serious injuries because they promptly got on the floor of the bus when the shooting began, Trushin said, adding that the bus was “packed.”

The town of Douma remains the last militant-held stronghold in the eastern Ghouta area. The militants, mainly from the Jaysh al-Islam group are being evacuated from the town, following the agreement brokered by the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria.

Douma came into the media spotlight over the past few days, following the alleged chemical incident reported on Saturday. Pro-militant sources, namely the controversial White Helmets group, claimed that a chlorine-filled munition struck the area, affecting dozens of civilians. The site of the purported attack has since been surrendered by the militants and explored by Russian military specialists, who found no signs of chemical attack or its victims.

The alleged incident, despite lacking any solid facts, has been taken at face value by the US and some other Western countries, who pinned the blame for it on Damascus and Moscow, and they have threatened to attack Syria. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump vowed to launch “nice and new and ‘smart’” missiles on Syria and told Russia to “get ready” for it. Moscow has earlier stated it would shoot down any incoming munitions and target the launch sites.

Italian police have clashed with anti-fascist protesters who sought to disrupt a rally organized by far-right groups in the Italian town of Modena. A Ruptly video shows the officers beating demonstrators lying on the ground.

The incident took place on Friday evening. A local far-right group called ‘Defend Modena’ organized a rally in the center of the town to protest against the Jus soli – or the right of the soil – a legal principle that allows anyone born on the territory of a state to obtain its citizenship. Italy currently does not use this principle in granting citizenship but local lawmakers in Modena have discussed the possibility of its introduction.

The far-right protest prompted local activist groups to stage as many as four counter protests on the same day. While most of them were peaceful, one ended up in scuffles between the demonstrators and police.

A group of anti-fascists and anarchists consisting of between 250 and 300 people attempted to reach the area where the far-right demonstrators were holding their rally, but police blocked their way. The anarchists then threw thunder-flashes at the officers, prompting them to respond, the local Gazetta di Modena newspaper reported.

Footage provided by the Ruptly video new agency shows the anti-fascists throwing what look like thunder-flashes, firecrackers and smoke pellets at the police with the officers in riot gear subsequently charging into the crowd. The video also shows officers beating people lying on the street with batons and attempting to detain some of the protesters by force.

According to local media, police also used water cannon to disperse the crowd. The protesters also reportedly engaged in clashes and scuffles with police on several occasions. However, there were no reports of any serious injuries, although local media said that some people were “bruised” in the brawls and at least two people were arrested.

Hundreds of activists flocked to the Libyan Embassy in Paris on Saturday, outraged with the government’s failure to tackle people smuggling after a CCN report unveiled a network of migrant slave auctions in Libya.

About a thousand people turned up to the protest following calls by several prominent anti-slavery groups and a number of celebrities of African origin, including soccer star Didier Drogba and former Miss France Sonia Rolland.

Carrying signs reading “No to slavery in Libya,” the demonstrators gathered in front of the Libyan Embassy on Saturday afternoon before marching towards the Champs-Elysees, where they were stopped by riot police cordons.

“Free our brothers,” “Let’s liberate Africa,” “We are black, we are human!” the demonstrators chanted.

Clashes broke out as police moved to disperse the protest. Some activists began hurling rocks at police, who responded with tear gas.

A Ruptly crew was on the spot to film as activists attempted to break through metal barriers erected by police.

One person was arrested following the scuffles, AFP reports. Police say the protest was illegitimate, adding that “no damage” resulted from the clashes.

Earlier this week, the Libyan government launched a probe into slave auctions operating in the country, including areas controlled by the UN-backed internationally-recognized Government of National Accord, after CNN showed footage of migrants being sold at a location outside Tripoli.

CNN claims in the report that men were priced at as little as $ 400, and that auctions are being carried out at many sites across Libya each month.

Libya has become the last stop on the route to Europe for migrants fleeing war, persecution, and poverty in their home countries, with the ongoing political chaos allowing people smugglers to thrive in the country, ravaged by civil war.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) used stun grenades and fired tear gas to disperse a rally in support of hunger striking Palestinian inmates in Israeli prisons, which was taking place in the city of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank on Friday.

The march began at the al-Azza refugee camp where the Palestinians set up a solidarity tent in support of the hunger strikers.

The protesters, carrying Palestinian national flags and chanting anti-Israeli government slogans, had made all their way to the northern entrance of Bethlehem City when the IDF intervened.

The security forces employed stunt grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowd, with the Palestinians replying by pelting stones at the troops.

One Palestinian was reportedly detained, while several people suffered from severe tear gas inhalation, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

An IDF spokesman said he was unaware of the arrest and suffocations among the protesters, promising to look into the reports.

The hunger strike across Israeli prisons began Monday as Palestinian inmates protested against their conditions of incarceration.

The hunger strikers are demanding to be moved to prisons inside the occupied territories to make it easier for families to visit, for restrictions on family visits to be lifted, for improved access to medical care and for the restoration of educational facilities, among other things.

According to the Times of Israel, the number of Palestinian inmates on hunger strike in Israeli prisons had reached between 1,200 and 1,300 people by Friday.

The police stepped in after they heard some “Kurdish music,” which turned out to be a theme from a US TV series.

The police officer in charge, apparently unfamiliar with the popular Netflix series Narcos, from which the protesters reportedly borrowed the background music for the event, believed that the tune with indiscernible words might contain “Kurdish propaganda,” according to the Turkish BirGun daily.

After being confronted by the officer about the music choice, the students denied the propaganda claim, saying that the piece was in fact Spanish.

The academics expelled from the university in one of the most recent purges also took part in the peaceful action that saw participants singing, dancing and selling snacks and pastries at the improvised fair. The money collected at the event, which also included an auction of the items provided by the dismissed academics, was to be handed over to the Education and Science Workers’ Union, a left-wing teachers and educational workers union, one of the largest in Turkey.

The event, however, did not go as planned as police called to the scene ordered the demonstrators to vacate the area, citing an order by the university rector’s office, while reportedly refusing to show the relevant document to the students.

The protesters did not comply with the request to leave, and amid the escalating tension the “Kurdish propaganda” allegation was put forward. The police eventually moved to disperse the crowd, tearing up banners and pricking balloons which the students used to decorate the area, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

After the gathering protesters were forcibly evicted from the area, the party-slash-protest continued at the canteen of the university’s faculty, where the students kept on dancing and singing.

Ankara University was hit especially hard by the recent state of emergency decree, pursuant to which 330 academics were dismissed from Turkish universities. According to BirGun, the Faculty of Communication of the Ankara University, the students of which were behind the protest, lost 16 academics leaving dozens of courses without tutors.

The state of emergency was first introduced in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt on July 15 last year. It has since been extended several times and is now due to end on April 20.

From the academics listed in the decree, 115 were signatories of the Academics for Peace petition, released in January 2016, which calls on authorities to end the violence against Kurdish population in the southeastern Turkey. The Turkish government said the military operation in the predominantly Kurdish region is necessary to curb down Kurdish insurgency in the country.

Turkey’s armed forces have been repeatedly blamed for incurring mass civilian casualties among Kurds and disrupting normal life with frequently imposed curfews.

Over 100,000 civil service workers, police and military personal and members of academia have been suspended or expelled in the aftermath of the attempted coup in what the Turkish government critics describe as the ongoing crackdown on those who disagree with the government policies.
