Shoppers often purchase more expensive washing up tablets because they believe higher prices yield shinier results – but is this really the case?

Express.co.uk tested out five dishwasher tablets with prices varying from 9p to 18p per tablet.

The results tested whether the tablets left glasses stained, smeared and shining – marking each category out of five.

So, is the average shopper better of forking out for dishwasher tablets or sticking to supermarket own brands?

Sainsbury’s All In One Dishwasher Tablets, Lemon, 60 for £5.50 (9p per tablet)

Stains: 7/10

There were only a few tiny stains, two left in the body of the glass and one on the rim.

Smears: 4/10

The glass wasn’t particular clear and there were grainy smears left in the glass.

Shine: 1/10

The glass looked dull, without any sparkle.

Total: 12/30

Finish All in 1 Powerball Dishwasher Tablets Lemon, 72 for £12.00 (16p per tablet)

Stains: 9/10

There was some residue left on the inside of the glass and just one mark on the base, which was buffed away with kitchen roll.

Smears: 6/10

There were a large number of large smears, so it was difficult to see through the glass.

Shine: 8/10

Despite the smears there was a notable twinkling sparkle to the glass.

Total: 23/30

Clean N Fresh 7 In 1, Dishwasher Tablets, Lemon, 15 for £2.79 (18p per tablet)

Stains: 3/10

There were still specks of dirt on the glass inside and outside, which you could feel on the glass.

Smears: 2/10

There were smears all over the glass, which the wash had totally failed to remove.

Shine: 4/10

There was a little shine, but not much.

Total: 9/10

The Co-Operative All in One Lemon, 20 for £3.59, (18p per tablet)

Stains: 5/10

There were a number of small stains around the belly of the glass, but they were small.

Smears: 8/10

The glass was generally very clear and transparent – you could see clearly through it.

Shine: 9/10

The glass was very shiny and clear – I would be more than happy to serve my guests a white wine spritzer in this glass.

Total: 22/30

Tesco All In One Dishwasher Tablets, 30 tablets for £4.00 (13p each)

Stains: 8/10

There are three barely noticeable stains on the glass.

Smears: 9/10

The glass is incredibly clear, it’s hard to find a single flaw on the body of the glass.

Shine: 9/10

The glass has an impressive, distinct, eye-catching gleam.

Total:  26/30

It is believed that dishwashers are significantly cleaner than washing up by hand. 

This is because they heat up past 63 degrees Celsius – hotter than most can wash with their hands.

In fact, Web MD claims your toilet may be cleaner than your kitchen sink.

Director of infection control at Long Island College Hospital of Brooklyn, New York, Eileen Abruzzo, said dishes that have been rinsed in the sink, even before they go in the dishwasher, can harbour E.coli and salmonella.

What is more, 90 per cent of tea towels are covered in bacteria. Researchers analysed towels in the US and Canada and they found enteric bacteria in 89 per cent and E. coli in 25.6 per cent of kitchen tea-towels.

Despite this 88 per cent of households still wash dishes by hand, according to a study by Mintel, which specialises in market analysis.

Tesco’s All In One Dishwasher Tablets came out on top, and were the second cheapest option – meaning you don’t need to splash out for dishwasher tablets to have sparkling glasses.

Express.co.uk recently tested which washing up is really the best.

Express.co.uk tested out five brands of washing up liquid with prices varying from 50p to £1.27. 

The results were incredibly interesting with everything from fat removal to foam duration tested out in an average British kitchen.

This time around it’s a commercial washer-disinfector produced by Miele Professional, which connects to the Internet of Things, but allows anyone connecting to it to request any file from its web server.

The Miele Professional PG8528 is big dishwasher and disinfector that’s designed for cleaning restaurant dishes and/or medical apparatus. As with many contemporary appliances, Miele has made it connected. With a built-in RS232 serial connector and Ethernet cable, it can be hooked up to various other appliances and a local network for wider internet connectivity.

That’s great for smart functions, but when it has a poorly secured web server back-end, it means that the appliance could be hacked by anyone with a rudimentary understanding of security.

The flaw is because the PST10 webserver embedded in the machine, “typically listens to port 80 and is prone to a directory traversal attack.” That could theoretically allow an attacker to discover sensitive information about the local network or the organization managing it, thereby giving them a new attack vector in the future.

This bug was discovered by Jens Regel of Schneider & Wulf, who purportedly contacted Miele Professional about the problem in November last year. However after speaking with a security representative at the company, they received no response for several months. With that in mind, they have now made the flaw public, in the hope that the company does something about it.

At the time of writing, no official statement has been made by Miele Professional, and the full disclosure page for the bug suggests that there has been no fix for the security problem as of yet.

Unfortunately, this sort of exploit path using IoT devices is becoming far too common. While we might not go as hard on the acronyms as ZDnet, as it points out, with more and more device manufacturers looking to make their appliances smart without impacting the cost of the product too much, we could see many more of these kinds of bugs in the future. In turn, that could enable much more dangerous attack vectors.

Possibly complicating matters, the head of the FCC, Maureen Ohlhausen, recently stated that she would rather the IoT industry be self-regulated, rather than being obligated to respond to strict federal regulation. In the absence of responsible industry players, that could leave many consumers at risk of further attacks.
