Enlarge / Pulsars are spinning neutron stars, the relics of massive stars gone supernova. (credit: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center)
When the Nobel Prizes roll around each year, inevitably there is chatter not just about who will win, but about those in the past who should have won, but didn’t, particularly women scientists. Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who discovered pulsars in the 1960s, is one of the names most commonly invoked. Now 75, she’s just been awarded something arguably better: a $ 3 million Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.
Originally founded in 2012, the Breakthrough Prizes are intended to be the “Oscars of Science.” In addition to the regular awards, the selection committee is also free to award a Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics any time it wishes, and the honor need not be for recent discoveries. Bell Burnell is being honored “for fundamental contributions to the discovery of pulsars, and a lifetime of inspiring leadership in the scientific community.”
Bell Burnell was born in Northern Ireland in 1943. Her father, an architect, often took her to visit the Armagh Planetarium, which he helped design, and the staff there encouraged her to pursue astronomy. The family were Quakers, a religious sect that traditionally supports women’s education. There was just one problem: girls weren’t allowed to study science at the local school.

In glorious sunshine building a bivouac would have been enough of a challenge yet in the adverse climate we managed to create vital cover to escape the deluge.
With survival at stake it was now a race against time to purify filthy, brown ditchwater into something safe enough to drink.
Thankfully it was left to our intrepid park ranger Elliot to sample the sludgy delights of our endeavours as my wife and I headed for a far more life-affirming G&T in the nearby bar.
This was survival with a twist as we immersed ourselves in the fantastic Nature Rockz programme at Haven’s Thornwick Bay holiday park.
Situated on the peninsula of East Yorkshire’s Flamborough Cliffs nature reserve, this “country park by the sea” nestled between the traditional bustling seaside town of Bridlington and quaint resort of Filey, Thornwick Bay is a hidden gem on this dramatic coastline.
It is easy to see why Haven has invested £10million to create a holiday park with a difference.
With seven-year-old Cub Scout Oliver, 9, and Girl Guide Amelie, 13, in tow it was a delight to see them indulge in outdoor activities.
We were taught how to make a fire, did fossil casting, explored sea caves and the incredible geology of the area and recreated cave art.
During a three-mile headland trek to Bempton Cliffs RSPB Sanctuary, with its imposing 260ft cliffs, we discovered they are home to many seabird breeding colonies including kittiwakes, gannets and lots of puffins.
The secluded bays beneath the campsite are perfect for sea fishing from the beach and spotting marine mammals such as porpoise and seals while crab nets are essential for rock pooling.
Mid-holiday I decided some white-knuckle excitement might ramp up the adrenaline levels, prompting my daughter and me to learn to ride a Segway.
Expecting a lengthy preparation I was surprised to find myself riding along the rugged coastal path within minutes of stepping onto the footplate.
It was a truly exhilarating “bucket list” experience but it took me a while to gradually pluck up the courage to go full-throttle and chase my fearless offspring.
Taking mountain bikes on the same trail the following day was equally enjoyable, save for it being much harder work going uphill.
Like anywhere in Britain there are few guarantees of glorious sunshine but during a week-long stay at Thornwick Bay we experienced the best and worst of the UK climate.
With clear skies the area really is your oyster but when the rain struck we were so spoilt with options we had no need to venture off-piste.
The renovated swimming pool complex, boasting three pools, slides, water jets and a baby pool is an obvious destination but a jam-packed activity programme also offers (among other delights) kayaking, archery, rifle-shooting, fencing and five-a-side football.
We stayed in a Prestige caravan enjoying the luxury of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and spacious lounge area.
Camping of course lends itself to firing up a barbecue but The Lighthouse Restaurant in the heart of the complex caters for almost every taste and with a speciality in wood-fired pizzas, it offers the perfect excuse not to have to.
Within walking distance in the village of Flamborough there are pubs and more extensive offerings 10-minutes’ drive by car in Filey along with what is in my opinion, the nation’s best fish and chips restaurant Inghams.
At Thornwick Bay, the nightly cabaret-style entertainment won me over with its sheer exuberance proving a massive hit with all ages.
But our two much preferred wrapping up in front of the outdoor cinema which they complemented perfectly by tucking into a fish supper under the stars while their parents, worn out with all the fresh air, gently dozed. Bliss.

Two weeks ago, Facebook admitted that a “shadowy Russian company” spent $ 100,000 on political ads targeting US Facebook users during the 2016 election campaign. At the time, Facebook turned information about these ad buys to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the election.
Today, Facebook announced that it would also be turning the information over to Congressional investigators. And Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would be stepping up its efforts to prevent foreign election interference in the future.
“The integrity of our elections is fundamental to democracy around the world,” Zuckerberg said in a video posted to Facebook. “We can’t prevent all governments from all interference. But we can make it harder.”

Stortorget square in Malmo’s Old Town is lined with stately buildings
While city tours don’t usually have a strict dress code, the arctic waters and on this occasion a new kayak tour of the city, mean rubber is the way forward.
I squeeze my neoprene-swathed hips into the stubby yellow kayak and launch myself, rather unceremoniously, into the icy shallows of the Baltic Sea.
To warm up beforehand, I’ve cycled down to Ribersborgsstranden, a mile-long stretch of white sand beach known locally as the Malmo Riviera, where I meet Ram Silwal, who runs kayaking tours of the strait and the city’s canals.
After a quick briefing my guide for the morning, Joakim, leads me down to the water’s edge where he bravely demonstrates an eskimo roll in the icy waters.
“It’s good for you!” he grins, shaking frosty water out of his hair.
I think not, choosing instead to bob gently up and down, craning my neck to see the full extent of the iconic Oresund Bridge.
As my oar slices through the clear waters of the Oresund strait, Joakim points out the Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, an open-air pool perched at the end of a wooden pier.
This historic seawater bathhouse opened in 1898 and maintains the longstanding Nordic tradition of nude bathing.
As I glide under the pier, I spot a pair of cheery, ruddy-cheeked pensioners with rolled-up towels, striding purposefully towards the pale green lido.

Although the pool is open all-year round, it’s especially popular in winter when brave Swedes poach themselves in wood-fired saunas before jumping into near-frozen waters.
From here we paddle inland towards Gamla Staden, Malmo’s historic old quarter.
Compact and easy to explore on foot, the city’s clutch of medieval squares is crammed with Danish and German-style half-timbered, gabled buildings which evoke the same charm as Copenhagen or Hamburg.
Paddling past the rouge-hued towers of Malmohus, the oldest renaissance castle in Sweden, we head down towards the Western Harbour.
Once the site of Kockums shipyard, it’s now a sustainable housing development and Europe’s first carbon-neutral neighbourhood.
It’s also home to the city’s landmark tower, the Turning Torso (locals either love it or hate it ).
At 623ft high it’s Scandinavia’s tallest building and twists a full 90 degrees from the bottom to top.
Paddling behind the Torso, the canals flow out to sea and past the harbour’s bleached-wood boardwalk, lined with cool bars and restaurants which boast the best views of the bridge.
I cycle back to the old town, where I decide I’ve earned my first fika of the day; the Swedish tradition of coffee and cake, which is religiously adhered to by locals.
Word on the ground is Lilla Kafferosteriet on Baltzarsgatan is one of the best in town.

Run by coffee aficionado Filip Akerblom, who roasts his own beans and bakes the best cinnamon buns in the city.
I work off the carb-overload with a cycle over to Davidshall, a trendy quarter known for its vintage clothing stores and labyrinth-style antiques emporiums flogging retro Scandinavian kitchenware for a few kroner apiece.
It’s also home to several chi-chi bistros.
Malmo is fast becoming known for its gastro scene and Michelin awarded stars to three restaurants here in 2015, including Bloom in the Park, a trendy no-menu joint headed up by Titti Qvarnstrom.
For dinner, I chance a rare table at Vastergatan, an NYC-style neighbourhood restaurant currently making waves on the Malmo foodie scene.

Like Bloom In The Park it has no menu and serves only seasonal dishes determined by chef Olle Allenburg, who tonight serves up a tremendous Nordic feast of steak tartare dusted with sesame seeds, soft-braised pig cheeks and heavenly lingonberry ice cream.
Following dinner, I head to the bars which line Stortorget and Lilla Torg, and simply cannot resist having a nightcap at B*****d, a hip (and let’s face it, rather thrillingly named) restaurant and late-night cocktail bar on Master Johansgatan. I
nside the dark, cavernous bar, glamorous locals flock in for the organic sharing platters and inventive cocktails, while us Brits, well me, enjoy a rare opportunity to legitimately utter the word B*****d quite a lot.
Whatever angle you witness it from, Malmo is a true treasure, crammed with Scandi charm, good food, and ideal for a weekend break. Rubber outfits are entirely optional.

A loco pushes day-trippers up the dramatic narrow gauge line that runs to the summit of Snowdon
As with so many aspects of my life, it started in a pub.
My former publisher had rung up to enquire: “Do you fancy doing a travel book for the AA?”
He said that he would tell me the details when we met up. He had hardly had time to pick up his pint before I was pressing him to reveal what the AA could want from me.
“A guide to narrow-gauge railways in the UK,” he said through frothy lips. “That’s a bit anorakish, isn’t it?” was my somewhat ungrateful response.
“No, don’t write it for the buffs … well, put in a bit for them, but mainly describe what you see on both sides of the train window.”
There was more than enough to see and hear when I travelled on five lines in five days, scything through a glut of glorious countryside in north and west Wales.
The best and worst sides of the extended family were on full display at most times. But perhaps the most bizarre behaviour came from an elderly couple who boarded the last train out of Porthmadog on the fabled Ffestiniog Railway at the very last minute.
He was munching Maltesers while she was taking the first bite out of a Snickers Bar. “He’s in our seat,” she said in a strong Yorkshire accent, slightly muffled by chocolate.
“He is,” her husband confirmed. Although slightly baffled by being referred to in the third person, I stood up immediately and offered to move. “No, he’s all right,” said Snickers woman.”
“Aye, he is,” said he, leading the way to an adjoining table where he began bending her ear with a description of a journey he had made on the Scarborough to Pickering line, seemingly oblivious to the beauty that began to unfold beyond the window almost as soon as we had set off towards the former slate-mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

The narrow gauge line that runs to the summit of Snowdon
It is worth remembering that quite a few of these little lines that provide us with so much pleasure were set up originally to transport the products of back-breaking and dangerous work underground.
They were built largely on the whims of wealthy men – mine and quarry owners in many cases – to get to the parts that main-line trains couldn’t reach.
Blasting tunnels was an expensive business. The narrower gauge gave the trains the flexibility to get around hills and mountains. Up the side of them, too, in some cases.
One weekend I found myself travelling to the summit of Snowdon a week after stepping on to the flat shingle of Dungeness, Britain’s only official desert, watching flocks of exotic birds explode across an expansive skyline.
It was a reminder that while large parts of our towns and cities have become depressingly similar the rural landscape of this small, offshore island is stunningly varied.
Particularly, it must be said, in those tucked-away parts that so many of these railways were designed to reach. Dungeness, incidentally, is at the far end of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch line in Kent, set up by a wealthy racing driver from the Roaring Twenties with a very long name and a very large bank balance.
And Snowdon? Well, the term “tucked away” doesn’t quite apply in that case. Those of us who travelled to the summit on a single-carriage train were in the minority on a Sunday morning.

The Dymchurch railway live
There were many more travellers on foot, some of them wielding sticks, others straining to cling on to taut dog leads. So crowded was it at the summit that I wouldn’t have been surprised to find a Big Issue seller.
An American lady who asked the manager whether there was a branch of Marks and Spencer up there didn’t sound so daft after all. The Snowdon Mountain Railway was one of just two of the many narrow-gauge lines that I travelled on that are run entirely by professionals.
Most are heavily dependent on volunteers – and always have been. On the Ffestiniog, for instance, the volunteer army was led by one Alan Pegler, a Falstaffi an character who hadlost the family fortune by buying the Flying Scotsman and shipping it to America – only to discover it would be banned as a fi re hazard in many states.
Corpulent and be-whiskered, he had made some of that money back by impersonating Henry VIII at the Tower of London 700 times. And the Ffestiniog today?
Well, our train was driven by a volunteer from Leicester and the guard wouldn’t have sounded out of place on the 8.15 from Guildford to Waterloo.
On the Sittingbourne to Kemsley Light Railway in Kent, I came across a woman fi ring one of the engines who turned out to be a freelance surveyor from Brighton. And on the Leadhills to Wanlockhead line, in the wilds of Scotland, our driver had a broad Dublin accent but drove up from his home in Cumbria every weekend.
It was on that remote Scottish railway that I chose to do the chapter on the Santa Special.

The Corris narrow gauge steam railway
On a sunny Saturday morning in December I found myself at one point tumbling down an extremely steep embankment en route to visit Father Christmas down a disused lead mine that had closed in 1830.
That was one of two occasions when things happened on this “narrow-gauge adventure” that could easily have resulted in a visit to A and E.
The other bruising brush with danger happened after a glorious early autumn day when I found myself in Ravenglass, a delightful Cumbrian port.
The railway had kindly offered me the opportunity to stay the night in a former first-class Pullman carriage called the Maid of Kent that was parked on a main-line siding adjoining the narrow-gauge line to Eskdale.
What they didn’t tell me was to bring a torch. That became evident after I emerged from the nearby Ratty Arms where I’d gone for a pint and a bite to eat.
Groping your way across railway lines in pitch darkness can be a sobering and challenging experience, believe me. The air was blue but luckily nobody was around to hear it.

When I was finally reunited with the Maid and turned on the telly, there was Michael Portillo reclining on a particularly plush seat on one of his Great Continental Railway Journeys.
“It’s all right for some,” I grumped at the time. But after the next day’s ride through some of the UK’s most glorious countryside I needed no convincing that researching this book had been more than all right for me.

Fans who are eagerly waiting to find out how Shirley Carter (played by Linda Henry) is finding prison life, will have to wait a bit longer as the soap’s planned Friday and Monday episodes are cancelled to make way for sporting events.
Tonight’s episode was replaced by the Six Nations Rugby Union which saw Wales clash with Ireland for the championship’s penultimate match.
The football will take precedent on Monday as Chelsea and Manchester United head to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Instead, those at home will have taken an involuntary four-day break from the show.
Some have taken to Twitter to express their outrage, with one posting: “No #EastEnders until Tuesday. How the hell am I going to cope?”
Another commented: “I know, need my EastEnders fix. Least next Fri it is on twice again.”(sic)
A third tweeted: “Fully p****s me off when eastenders is cancelled and for what?? S****y six nations.”
Yesterday’s double-bill saw Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) dramatically clash with Carmel Kazemi (Bonnie Langford)when the latter questioned her capability as a mother because of her previous mental health issues.
The episode also prompted a reaction from viewers who were concerned over Ian Beale’s diabetes storyline.
EastEnders continues on Tuesday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
