RuPaul’s Drag Race has always been a magical experience, but that took on a whole new meaning on Thursday’s episode, which ended with the ultimate vanishing act.
The mini challenges in Season 11 have been all over the place — I still cringe thinking about the queens’ inability to read one another — so I really appreciated this week’s sillier competition, which paired each contestant with a Pit Crew member for a little relay race. And while Vanessa Vanjie Mateo technically won by getting the most balls into the basket, I’m pretty sure everyone considers themselves winners after spending so much time attached at the hip (or other appendages) to the show’s beloved Pit Crew.
As the mini challenge winner, Vanjie had the honor — or the burden, depending on your perspective — of splitting the queens into two ludicrously uneven teams for a magic-themed maxi challenge. Vanjie enlisted A’Keria C. Davenport, Silky Nutmeg Ganache and Yvie Oddly for her crew (aka “Team Personality”), leaving Nina West, Brooke Lynn Hytes and Shuga Cain to fend for themselves. Mama Ru tried to stir the pot by asking Brooke Lynn if she was offended that Vanjie didn’t pick her, despite their relationship, but Brooke Lynn appeared unbothered by the turn of events. (“She didn’t want our romantic connection getting in the way of our work.”)
RELATED STORIES
Of course, given how things worked out, I’ll bet Vanjie wishes she had recruited Brooke Lynn, whose team put together a funny, entertaining and professional magic show — even if I not-so-secretly wanted them to dress up like the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus. Brooke Lynn’s team may not have included the same outlandish personalities as Vanjie’s, but the ability to follow a script and remain cohesive goes a long way in this competition. (I’m also going to be laughing about “Girl, where is Nina? Football practice?” for the next few days.)
Meanwhile, Vanjie’s team was kind of a mess, and no amount of screaming “Da Black Magic!” could detract from that. Yes, I appreciated that A’Keria was able to deep throat that balloon — one of the more perplexing tricks of the evening — but the rest of the teammates, including Yvie, just kind of fell flat for me. Then again, considering Silky fell asleep during rehearsal, I probably shouldn’t be surprised.
Fortunately, some of those less-impressive performers were able to Ru-deem themselves on this week’s caftan-themed runway — especially Yvie, who served us double-jointed “enlightened monk realness.” But no one looked more at home in her caftan than Nina, who earned a well-deserved second win thanks to her impressive performance in the magic show. (I love that Michelle Visage compared Nina’s performance to a Saturday Night Live sketch, since Nina revealed Chris Farley to be her inspiration for the challenge.)
Shuga and Vanjie ending up in the bottom two couldn’t have been less of a surprise. In fact, given their performances up to this point — which have ranged from forgettable to regrettable — I’m a little surprised that either one of them is still in the game. Frankly, I would have gotten rid of both of them after their uninspired lip-syncs to Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.” The only thing Vanjie did to (slightly) edge Shuga out was to angrily remove her jewelry as the song went on, though I might not have even noticed if Yvie hadn’t mentioned that in her confessional.
In the end, though, it was Shuga Cain whom Ru sent sashaying away. Your thoughts on her elimination? Drop ’em in a comment below.

China runs the largest merchandise trade surplus with the US at $ 375 billion.
But some analysts think the data can be misleading.
The US-China trade deficit could be overstated by as much as 20%, one analyst said.
China is the world’s largest trader and is part of almost every supply and value chain. But a team of Macquarie Research analysts led by Viktor Shvets argue in a recent research note that China’s trade importance is “overstated” and “distorted.”
Shvets says the trade balance used to be more relevant. But now, in an era of multinationals and fragmentation of global supply value chains, it can be misleading. See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The Pacific Islands contain some of the famous idyllic holiday destinations chosen by Britons for sun and luxury,
They could also be gone within the next century.
With sea levels rising dramatically in the past few decades, the islands will suffer the most as they eventually become entirely submerged.
Tuvalu could be uninhabitable by 2050, with some islands such as Kiribati being completely gone by 2100.
The Pacific island nations have urged leaders around the world to act after the COP23 conference in Germany discussed climate change and implementing the 2015 Paris agreement on global warming.
The Maldives is a famous destination for honeymooners and families, and this is also at risk of completely disappearing.
With the lowest elevation in the world and just an average height of four feet above sea level, this too could be gone in the next century.
The Solomon Islands have also been affected, with five of them already having completely sunk.
New Zealand has become the first nation to create a new visa category for people who live on the islands, and are a product of island displacement.
Professor Tim Flannery, a climate change expert at La Trobe University, told news.com.au: “It’s very concerning times, particularly if you live in a small island nation.
“Many of those nations are already making agreements to deal with the problem as it develops.”
He explained further: “As sea water rises it starts to penetrate the freshwater on the land, that’s the most immediate threat for a lot of the island.
“Beach and coastal erosion and flooding is another threat. With these two factors it’s entirely possible within the next 30 years some islands could be rendered uninhabitable.”

Tracie Medley has broken her silence to explain what happened the night Rebecca disappeared
The 24-year-old from Chester was working on the cruise ship the Disney Wonder when she just disappeared somewhere off the Pacific Coast of Mexico.
The Disney Corporation insist she was swept overboard by a wave while relaxing alone by a pool. Her parents suspected something else. And despite settling with Disney in 2015 for an undisclosed sum questions continue to be raised.
And now astonishing new testimony has emerged that could blow the whole case wide open again.

Cruise worker Tracie Medley, 29, has broken her silence to explain what happened in the hours leading to Rebecca’s disappearance. Now married and a mother living in Boston, US, Tracie has described how she and Rebecca were lovers – and how on the night she went missing they had enjoyed a threesome with Tracie’s boyfriend Deven Hyde.
According to Tracie, after the pair had begun a relationship on board the cruise ship, Rebecca had become upset when Hyde returned from shore leave and resumed his relationship with her. On the night before she died the three had drinks and then returned to Hyde’s cabin at which point the threesome commenced.

“Rebecca went up to him and started kissing him,” says Tracie. “We all basically had sex with each other. At one point they went into the bathroom. Then he came out and came over to me and we started fooling around.
“She came out of the bathroom and I feel like that was when it all hit her. The way she looked at us – it was like it was fun when it was her and him and me and her, but for her to see him and me together, I think she was like, ‘What am I doing here?’

“She took a shower then said she wanted to go for a walk. I said, ‘You are coming back, right?’” It was the last Medley ever saw of her.
The initial investigation into Rebecca’s disappearance concluded that she had most likely been swept overboard but despite the ship having extensive CCTV coverage, the only footage that came to light was of Rebecca making a phone call at 6am, dressed in what appear to be men’s clothes and in a state of some distress.
And a private investigator hired by Rebecca’s parents Mike and Ann Coriam cast serious doubts on that theory: after studying weather reports for the area at the time he concluded that the seas were calm and additionally that the pool area is protected by high walls, meaning that the likelihood of being swept away by a wave from there was minimal.

Suicide also did not seem likely at all. The Coriams have said that their daughter was a happy, optimistic girl and that it was those qualities that secured her a job with Disney in the first place. It was also discovered that she had bought them tickets to Disneyland Paris, intended as a surprise gift for the next time she returned home.
So what did happen? Labour MP for Chester Chris Matheson told the Liverpool Echo in 2015 that he believes Rebecca to have been a crime victim and possibly even murdered: “The more you look into this the more it smells rotten. The more it smells like a crime has taken place,” he said. Disney, however, stood by the results of a brief two-day investigation conducted by Paul Rolle, a Bahamian policeman: he concluded that there had been no crime committed, that Rebecca’s vanishing was “not suspicious” and that she must have fallen overboard, most likely as the result of a freak wave.

In 2011, Osama Bin Laden was killed by US Navy Seals and buried at sea, but now conspiracy theorists claim that it was all a lie and he is still alive
But Medley now says that despite giving a full and honest statement at the time, she was never quizzed by Rolle or any other member of the police, and that soon afterwards her contract with Disney was not renewed. “I was thrown to the wolves,” she says. “Disney said a rogue wave knocked her off the ship. I believe that is b*******.”
Shortly after Rebecca’s disappearance shipping minister Mike Penning also criticised Disney’s investigation, saying the company was “more interested in getting the ship back to sea than in investigating the case of the missing member of their crew”.

Whatever happened to Rebecca that morning on the Disney Wonder may never be known. Was it, as Disney claim, a freak wave or did something sinister occur?
The terms of the Coriams’ settlement with Disney forbid them from speaking about the case now but for Tracie Medley questions still need to be answered. “I lost my first love. I never had chance to mourn her,” she says. “We were madly in love and I lost my best friend.
We were living the dream and it all crashed down so fast. I wish I went on the walk with her. I hate that she was alone and that so many questions were left unanswered.
“I just knew I should have gone with her when she asked me to go.”

A pair of bodies discovered in a shrinking glacier in Switzerland are believed to be a couple who went missing 75 years ago, according to a report in Swiss newspaper Le Matin.
Marcelin and Francine Dumoulin disappeared in the area in August 1942 while tending to their cows.
Bernhard Tschannen, the director of ski-lift company Glacier 3000, said one of his employees stumbled upon pairs of male and female shoes, some backpacks, tin bowls, and part of a body on the Tsanfleuron glacier, according to the Guardian.
Local police said in a statement that there were two bodies lying near each other — “a man and a woman wearing clothing dating from the period of World War Two.”
DNA tests have not yet confirmed their identities, but police said the bodies had identity papers, and were perfectly preserved in the glacier.
Tschannen told the Geneva Tribune that the couple likely fell into a crevasse and stayed there for decades, until the glacier receded. The bodies were found near a ski lift above the Les Diablerets resort in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
Marcelin Dumoulin, a shoemaker, and Francine, a teacher, left behind seven children. Their youngest daughter, Marceline Udry-Dumoulin, is now 79 and told Le Matin that the discovery brought her a “deep sense of calm.”
“We spent our whole lives looking for them, without stopping” she said. After their parents’ disappearance, Udry-Dumoulin said she and her siblings were placed with different families and eventually lost touch.
“I was lucky to stay with my aunt. We all lived in the region but became strangers,” she said.
Udry-Dumoulin said she plans to have a proper funeral for her parents, and wear white to represent the hope she never lost.

A famous rocky outcrop near the summit of Mount Everest has collapsed, damaging the chances of the next generation of climbers hoping to reach the top of the world’s highest peak.
British mountaineer Tim Mosedale, who is currently leading an expedition on Everest, confirmed the news on Facebook: “It’s official – The Hillary Step is no more. Not sure what’s going to happen when the snow ridge doesn’t form because there’s some huge blocks randomly perched hither and thither which will be quite tricky to negotiate.”
It is thought that the slope now in place of the rock barrier will make it easier for climbers to scale. Historically, though, the area has been the site of long queues of climbers – and mountaineers are worried the slope could create a bottleneck for those already battling low oxygen and frostbite.
The American Himalayan Foundation posted pictures online in May 2016 that seemed to suggest the Step, although covered with snow, had changed shape. Now, with less snow on the mountain this year, it’s clear the outcrop is gone.
“Having been up it a few times, and getting there this year, it’s obvious that the feature is no longer there,” Mosedale said in an interview with planetmountain.com.
“Just rubble and debris where the tricky features used to be,” he added.
Speaking to the BBC, Mosedale, who recently reached the summit of Everest for the sixth time, said he thought the feature had come apart following the Nepal earthquake in 2015.
“It could well just be gravity,” he said. “But I would suspect the earthquake was the cause.”
The outcrop was named after legendary mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary. Hillary and his climbing companion Tenzing Norgay became the first men to scale Mount Everest in 1953.
The news follows reports that an American climber died on the mountain Sunday.
Roland Yearwood, 50, from Alabama, reportedly died at an altitude of about 27,500ft (8,400 meters) in an area known as the “death zone” for its thin air.
Yearwood’s death is the third on Everest this month and comes one day after Indian climber Ravi Kumar went missing in the same area during his descent from the peak.
“Three sherpa rescuers have been sent to search for Kumar,” Thupden Sherpa of the Arun Treks and Expedition company told Reuters.
Earlier this month, an 85-year-old Nepalese man died while trying to reclaim the title of oldest person to climb the world’s highest peak.
Last month, climber Ueli Steck, nicknamed the Swiss Machine, fell 1,000 meters (3,280ft) to the foot of Mount Nupste, a smaller peak in the Everest region, while acclimatizing ahead of his bid to traverse a new Everest route.

Madeleine McCann went missing ten years ago – Kate and Gerry will never give up hope
For most of us it will be just another Wednesday. But for one Leicestershire family, May 3, 2017, represents a terrible anniversary.
It was on this day 10 years ago that Kate and Gerry McCann’s whole world fell apart. What had been a happy family holiday with friends in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz was shattered when their three-year-old daughter Madeleine went missing – disappearing from their apartment while they dined with friends just 60 yards away.
It sparked one of the most famous missing-person cases in history – and marked the start of a decade of heartbreak, hope and extraordinary courage by her parents.

Ten years on, the desperate quest to find out just what happened that night continues – as does the hunt for Madeleine herself. As recently as last month, the Home Office granted Scotland Yard officers an extra £85,000 to extend their search until September.
In a statement released on the findmadeleine.com website they set up to help co-ordinate the search, Kate and Gerry speak of their continuing struggle to cope, as well as of the impact that the anniversary will have on them.
“Ten years – there’s no easy way to say it, describe it, accept it. I remember when Madeleine first disappeared I couldn’t even begin to consider anything in terms of years. Shawn Hornbeck abducted and kept hidden for over four years, Natascha Kampusch for over eight years. I couldn’t go there. And now here we are… Madeleine, our Madeleine – 10 years.
“Most days are similar to the rest – another day. May 3, 2017 – another day. But 10 years – a horrible marker of time, stolen time.”
On Wednesday, the family – Kate, Gerry, and Madeleine’s younger twin siblings, Sean and Amelie, now 12 – will be joined by close friends and supporters to mark the occasion with an outdoor prayer service in their home village of Rothley.
A candle continues to burn around the clock by the village war memorial, as a symbol of the community’s undiminished hope that one day Madeleine will be returned to them. But if the anniversary marks a milestone in a case which still continues to fascinate and frighten parents of small children everywhere, it also throws a light on to the emotional and spiritual journey made by Kate and Gerry themselves since May 2007.

A decade on from the events that thrust them into the public eye, just how have they coped? Despite the tremendous upheaval, both Kate and Gerry have tried to keep things as “normal” as possible at home, both to minimise disruption when their daughter returns, but also for the sake of their twins.
“There’s not a day goes by when we don’t think about Madeleine, miss her in some way, and obviously wonder where she is and what has happened to her,” says Gerry. “We kinda have that all the time but we’ve sort of adapted in many ways, and life seems pretty normal most of the time.
“But there’s still a scar, a deep, deep scar that’s kind of knitted at the minute but you still think it might break. We are a happy family, but we’re not a complete family.”

The McCanns’ still live in the same detached house in Rothley, where green and yellow ribbons representing hope and solidarity flutter permanently from the gates. Kate has spoken of how they keep Madeleine’s bedroom just as it was before her disappearance – with one difference. Inside her room are 10 years’ of unopened birthday and Christmas presents, waiting for her.
They are also adamant that Sean and Amelie should be allowed to have as happy and unremarkable a childhood as possible.
“The twins are doing really well,” said Kate last year. “They’ve grown up essentially without Madeleine, knowing their sister is missing and they want her back. They are up to date, they know everything, they know if we are meeting police. There is nothing kept from them.
“As a family 98 per cent of the time we are busy. I don’t know if that’s a conscious thing but it helps. Everything is the same and she’s in as many photos at home as [the twins] are.”
Given what happened to their eldest daughter, the temptation to keep the twins under 24-hour surveillance must have been huge – but it is an urge they have consciously resisted.
“Working hard and doing all the family things with the kids is important,” says Gerry.
“I’ve been pretty adamant that we have got to let them develop and they can’t be closeted. I know, for us, there is increased anxiety but we can’t let that impact on them having a normal upbringing.”
Trying to maintain any level of “normality” over the past decade has been a struggle, however. As well as spearheading the enormous campaign to find Madeleine – creating and maintaining the findmadeleine website, giving hundreds of interviews to media organisations around the world and working with the police, Interpol and the Home Office to keep the search alive – both Kate and Gerry have come under enormous personal pressure.
In the September following her disappearance they were initially given “arguido” status by the Portuguese police, meaning they were to be treated as formal suspects.
Throughout it all, however, they have kept a united front and remained firm in their conviction that their daughter will be found.
On their website they declare: “There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Madeleine has been harmed. She is still missing and someone needs to be looking for her. She is very young and vulnerable and needs our help. We love her dearly and miss her beyond words.”

Madeline McCann went missing on May 3, 2007
This week a family friend spoke of how it is this extraordinary unity that has helped the couple cope with the past decade. “The McCanns are incredibly strong as a family,” said the friend.
“There was a time when Kate never left the house but she has found some normality for herself. She goes to the gym almost every day.
“Exercising clearly helps her. She looks really well, much better than she has for a long time.”
In 2011 Kate wrote a book, Madeleine: Our Daughter’s Disappearance And The Continuing Search For Her. It quickly became a bestseller – with all the money raised helping to fund the campaign to find her.
In it, she wrote: “The decision to publish this book has been very difficult, and taken with heavy hearts… My reason for writing it is simple: to give an account of the truth.
“Writing this memoir has entailed recording some very personal, intimate and emotional aspects of our lives. Sharing these with strangers does not come easily to me, but if I hadn’t done so I would not have felt the book gave as full a picture as it is possible for me to give.

Madeline McCann went missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, in Portugal’s Algarve 9 years ago.
“As with every action we have taken over the last five years, it ultimately boils down to whether what we are doing could help us to find Madeleine. When the answer to that question is yes, or even possibly, our family can cope with anything. Nothing is more important to us than finding our little girl.”
At the time of Madeleine’s disappearance, both Kate and Gerry were practising doctors, she a family GP, he a consultant cardiologist. And while Kate has put her career on hold to look after the twins and help run the search for Madeleine, Gerry has continued to work – and is now one of the leading heart doctors in the country. As well as being professor of cardiac imaging at Leicester University, he practises as a cardiologist at the city’s Glenfield General Hospital.
Recently he led the team that saved the life of former England and Leicester footballer Alan Birchenall, who had collapsed at an award ceremony, suffered a cardiac arrest and “died” for seven minutes.
Meanwhile the search for Madeleine goes on. In the decade since her disappearance, detectives have scrutinised over 600 individuals, studied around 40,000 documents and investigated 8,685 sightings across 101 countries and territories worldwide.

Twins Sean and Amelie hope to be reunited with their sister
Total spending on the search – formally known as Operation Grange – has come to £11.1million, and the Find Madeleine fund still has more than £700,000 in the bank. If the past 10 years have been almost unimaginably harrowing for Kate and Gerry McCann, it may be the faith they have shown that their missing daughter will return, as well as their determination to give the twins as normal a childhood as possible, that has kept them going. For their part, they consider it a joint venture.
They say: “We consider ourselves immensely fortunate to have received the love, solidarity and support from so many kind and decent people over the past decade.
“There have been many challenges and low points along the way but the warmth, encouragement and positivity we have experienced from the ‘quiet majority’ has undoubtedly sustained us and maintained our faith in human goodness. And while that is there, there will always be hope.”

He certainly knows how to make an entrance.
It’s indisputable that the long wait to finally see Luke Skywalker at the very end of the film built up the suspence and the audience’s antcipation to fever pitch.
We know that he had gone missing from the galaxy after the terrible massacre of his Jedi students by Kylo Ren, but there were even shadier forces at work to explain his absence for almost the entire movie.
Revelations from the first drafts of the script for The Force Awakens hold the key.
As we are beginning to suspect about the entire new trilogy, it is all about Rey.
The very first scripts by Michael Arndt actually focussed on the children of Luke, Leia and Han, with the classic trio playing a more minor role.
With the introduction of a scavenger called Kira, who became Rey, and the Kasdans put in charge of the scripts and storyline, the original trio were given a more integral role.
As Kira turned into Rey and her destiny began to unfold, however, something had to be done about Luke.
Even Arndt had recognised early on that Luke’s presence could easily dominate the film.
Star Wars expert Bessy says: “Luke Skywalker was originally going to involved throughout the movie, it was Michael Arndt who changed that. He felt as though his presence detracted from Kira.
“With an audience so enamoured by Luke and his legacy, would viewers care as much about Kira when Luke showed up on screen? Or would they want to know what Luke was up to until now?”
“By making the discovery of Luke the fulfilment of the quest, the writers realised they could spend the movie building up the heroine who would become Rey and fall in love with her.”
Bessy also reminds fans that director JJ Abrams has previously admitted that he first became intrigued by the idea of a character like Rey who had no idea who Luke was, who believed he was a myth.
Fans will remember the powerful moment when Han tells Rey and Finn that everything they had heard about Luke and the Jedi was not a legend, it was true.
Luke’s fate was sealed.
The Jedi’s banishment from the screen, therefore, served the dual purpose of giving Rey centre-stage as well as reinforcing his almost mythic status.
Thankfully, the mission has been accomplished and all is forgiven. The audience now loves Rey and Luke will take his rightful place centre stage in The Last Jedi.

Sears and Kmart’s websites no longer sell products from the Trump Home line, which is owned by the Trump Organization.
As of Friday, a search for Trump Home items on both retailers’ websites yielded no results, except items sold by third-party sellers.
A Sears spokesperson told Business Insider Friday that the company is looking into the disappearance of the Trump line.
As of Tuesday, Sears was still selling 19 Trump Home items online and Kmart was selling 13 items, according to Shannon Coulter, the brand strategist who started the #GrabYourWallet Trump boycott.
Coulter has been charting which retailers do business with the Trump family on the Grab Your Wallet website since October.
Coulter tweeted tweeted that the items were missing on Friday.

It is unclear if Trump Home merchandise is still for sale in brick-and-mortar stores.
Last week Nordstrom officially cut ties with Ivanka Trump’s fashion brand, and her fashion line disappeared from Neiman Marcus’ website. Home Shopping Network stopped selling a Trump Home line of lamps.
