Even before The Disappearance‘s little Anthony goes missing, life for the Sullivan family isn’t exactly a peaceful affair — as evidenced by this exclusive sneak peek at WGN America’s tense new thriller.

The six-part limited series follows what happens after Anthony Sullivan disappears during a treasure hunt that takes place on his 10th birthday. Pretty soon, all of his family members are wrapped up in the investigation, consumed by the unthinkable horror of what might’ve happened to the boy. As everything unravels and tensions escalate, per the show’s official logline, “deep familial secrets become uncovered and threaten to shatter the family unit.”

Flashbacks like the one above illustrate how fraught Sullivan family dynamics were prior to Anthony’s incident. In the clip, the young boy (newcomer Michael Riendeau) sits quietly as a discussion between his father Luke (Aden Young, Rectify) and grandfather Henry (Peter Coyote, The 4400) turns into a heated battle at the dinner table. (And this is before Henry organizes the treasure hunt that goes so terribly wrong…)

The Disappearance, which aired on Canada’s CTV in 2017, gets underway in the United States on Tuesday at 10/9c. Press PLAY on the clip above to get your first look at the show.

Almost a year to the day after its tragic loss at sea, the Argentine Navy submarine ARA San Juan has been located. Using side-scan sonar and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), the crew of the oceanographic survey vessel Seabed Constructor found the lost sub in the bottom of an undersea ravine about 600 kilometers (approximately 375 miles) east of Comodoro Rivadavia in Argentina’s Patagonia region. The submarine rests at a depth of 920 meters (more than 3,000 feet) below the surface of the South Atlantic—over three times its safe operating depth and well below the crush depth of the sub.

The San Juan was one of only two TR-1700 (or Santa Cruz) class submarines completed for the Argentine Navy by Thyssen Nordseewerke. Built in Germany, the San Juan was delivered in 1984 and underwent a major refit in 2014; other subs intended to be built for the class were put on hold or cancelled, with two unfinished subs cannibalized for parts. Much of the sub’s mission in recent years was focused on surveillance operations in Argentina’s exclusive economic zone in the South Atlantic, primarily to combat illegal fishing.

The announcement of the discovery came only two days after a memorial service held by family members of the crew and a day after the anniversary of the ship’s loss. Recovery operations are pending, awaiting a decision by the Argentine government.

  • The US received a payment of $ 100 million from Saudi Arabia on the same day that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Riyadh to meet with Saudi leaders on the investigation into journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance.
  • US officials denied that the payment had anything to do with Pompeo’s visit or Khashoggi, though a source told The New York Times that the timing of the deposit “was no coincidence.”
  • Khashoggi, a longtime Saudi critic, has not been seen publicly since he walked into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, on October 2. He is feared dead.
  • Trump previously said Saudi Arabia would face “severe punishment” if evidence points to Saudi leaders having been involved in harming Khashoggi, but his administration has softened its stance in recent days, touting the Saudi royals’ repeated denials and even casting doubt on reported Turkish audio and video evidence.

  • Foreign-policy experts say the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is “embarrassing” and a “crisis” for President Donald Trump.
  • Experts seem to disagree, however, on how big of a challenge this poses to Trump’s overall agenda.
  • They say the situation creates tension between Trump and the GOP foreign-policy establishment in Congress.
  • Experts believe Trump won’t do much about Khashoggi, and will let Congress take the lead.
  • Khashoggi went missing after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month, and is feared dead.

The disappearance of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi has placed President Donald Trump in a precarious and “embarrassing” position, and it will complicate his agenda in Congress, foreign-policy experts say.

There is a great deal of concern over the message Trump is sending about America’s commitment to human rights via his response to the situation, but experts disagree over how this will impact the US-Saudi relationship and Trump’s foreign agenda in the long run.

BBC Breakfast viewers distracted from show by VERY odd disappearance: 'Poor chap' https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-viewers-distracted-from-show-by-very-odd-disappearance-poor-chap/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-viewers-distracted-from-show-by-very-odd-disappearance-poor-chap/#respond Thu, 08 Feb 2018 08:47:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-viewers-distracted-from-show-by-very-odd-disappearance-poor-chap/

Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were talking with one of the BBC Breakfast reporters when the moment happened.

News correspondent Andy Moore was reporting that many local councils across the country will be raising council tax in April, however, those at home could barely concentrate on what he was saying.

Eagle-eyed fans had spotted that there was more to the BBC newsroom background than met the eye.

As background video of the newsroom was played behind Andy, it became clear that it was only a clip of a few seconds on loop.

However, it appeared as though there may have been a flaw in the editing as one man in the bottom left corner kept appearing on screen, before swiftly disappearing and reappearing again, over and over.

Those watching at home spotted the man seemingly vanishing into thin air, and took to Twitter to laugh at the moment.

“@BBCBreakfast loving the man in the left corner of the screen who just keeps disappearing in the report by Andy Moore, I always thought those backgrounds were real time,” one exclaimed.

A second added: “@BBCBreakfast talking to someone in the London newsroom but I couldn’t concentrate on what he was saying. In the background there was a guy in a white shirt at the front left suffering from groundhog day!”

Some fans even posted a clip of the hilarious incident to the social media network.

“And there I was, thinking it was live images behind him. Check out the disappearing/reappearing man in the bottom left corner @BBCBreakfast #notsolive,” one wrote.

While another jested: “BBC new tactics for addressing pay gap…. extermination. Poor chap. #BBC #@BBCNews @BBCBreakfast.”

While it merely provided a laugh for some, it seemed as though it came as shock for those who didn’t realise the images were not in real time.

Just yesterday viewers were in turmoil for another reason, as they were outraged by a controversial change in the show’s format.

Carol Kirkwood excitedly showed off the BBC’s new weather graphics, but not everyone was impressed.

While some were happy with the new hi-tech images and data representations, others believed that certain parts of the UK were being obscured.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

Aussie sub found 103 years after mysterious disappearance during WWI https://briefnews.eu/aussie-sub-found-103-years-after-mysterious-disappearance-during-wwi/ https://briefnews.eu/aussie-sub-found-103-years-after-mysterious-disappearance-during-wwi/#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2017 05:26:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/aussie-sub-found-103-years-after-mysterious-disappearance-during-wwi/

The search for Australia’s first submarine lost during World War I has ended, 103 years after the AE1 vanished in 1914 along with its 35-member crew.

The mystery of the missing sub has puzzled the Australian Navy ever since it vanished off the New Guinean island of New Britain on September 14, 1914. AE1 was the first Allied submarine lost in the war, and though the cause of its sinking remains a mystery, the navy have finally found the previously elusive sub.

“It was the first loss for the Royal Australian Navy and the first Allied submarine loss in World War I; a significant tragedy felt by our nation and our allies,” Australian Defense Minister Marise Payne said in a statement.

Previous attempts to find the vessel turned up nothing, but a search that started just last week finally bore fruit.

“An expedition to locate the submarine took place in waters off the coast of the Duke of York Island group in Papua New Guinea this week. The search vessel ‘Fugro Equator’ located an object of interest in over 300 metres of water. Upon further inspection, confirmed the object to be AE1,” Payne explained.

“Following the discovery of the submarine, a small commemorative service was held by those on-board the survey vessel to remember those officers and sailors who lost their lives 103 years ago. Efforts are being made to contact the descendants of the crew,” Payne added.

The AE1 made final contact with an Australian ship at 2:30pm the day it disappeared, AP reports. At the time, villagers on a nearby island were left mystified by the appearance of a “monster” or “devil fish” which breached the water before disappearing.

The Terrifying Disappearance of Little Pauline Picard https://briefnews.eu/the-terrifying-disappearance-of-little-pauline-picard/ https://briefnews.eu/the-terrifying-disappearance-of-little-pauline-picard/#respond Sun, 29 Oct 2017 06:18:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-terrifying-disappearance-of-little-pauline-picard/

The 2-year-old girl was playing on her family farm in Goas al Ludu, just outside of Brest, in Brittany, France. It was a quiet and safe area, and Pauline Picard’s mother never worried about letting her children play in the picturesque farmland. But when she called her daughter to supper one evening in April 1922, she was horrified by the lack of response. Shocked by the little girl’s disappearance, police and townspeople banded together to comb the landscape for the lost girl, but they came up empty-handed. “La Petite Pauline Picard,” as the media dubbed her, had vanished without a trace.

Statistics show that the first 48 hours after a child’s disappearance are the most critical for finding them alive. So at the three-week mark, the Picards had begun to abandon hope of ever seeing their little girl again. Little Pauline was widely assumed to have been eaten by a boar or taken by gypsies.

These doubts were explained away as amnesia brought on by post-traumatic stress.

So news from Cherbourg of a little girl matching Pauline’s description having been found by police seemed miraculous. When an officer showed a photo of the child to Pauline’s mother, Le Matin reported that she burst into tears, crying, “That’s my daughter! My poor little Pauline!” Overcome with joy, the couple drove 250 miles to Cherbourg to take their daughter home.

But the story of little Pauline was far from over; questions quickly grew into a heartbreaking paranoia for the Picards. How had their toddler wandered 250 miles without succumbing to the elements? Why did she not seem to recognize her parents or her brothers and sisters? And, most troublesome, they couldn’t understand how she had forgotten the Breton dialect. These doubts were explained away as amnesia brought on by post-traumatic stress. The working theory? That Pauline had been abducted and abused by her kidnapper. While the girl didn’t seem to recognize her family, they, including her brothers, sisters and even their neighbors, all recognized her. A mysterious woman dressed in rags was seen with the little girl before she was taken by Cherbourg police, and the media maintained that this woman was the key to unraveling the mystery of Pauline’s disappearance.

Though newspapers from Paris to New York rejoiced over the miraculous return of little Pauline, the Picards harbored nagging suspicions that the child living in their house was not theirs. These worries grew when a local farmer, Yves Martin, seemingly confessed to killing their daughter. He shakily asked the Picards whether they thought the little girl in the house was their daughter before screaming, “God help me, I’m guilty!” and running off (he was later admitted to an asylum). And soon after, a discovery was made that would terrify a nation.

On May 26, one month after Pauline was discovered in Cherbourg, a cyclist found the naked body of a small girl not far from the Picard farm. The head, feet and hands had been removed, preventing positive identification, but next to it was a neatly folded pile of children’s clothes, among which were the black-and-white checkered dress, navy blue jacket and black tights little Pauline had been wearing the day she disappeared.

Stranger still? The skull of a fully grown man was found next to the grisly scene, introducing the prospect of a second victim. Also, the police and volunteer rescue searchers maintained that they had been over the area where the body was found many times. “So careful was the search made at the time of Pauline’s disappearance that the body would have been discovered had it been lying where it was found,” The New York Times reported. All of which suggested that the body had been moved there recently because the killer wanted it to be found.

So who was the little girl living with the Picards? Sadly, after the body was found, the Picards determined that the girl found in Cherbourg could not be their Pauline, and she was sent to live in an orphanage. But questions have lingered over the last century as to how the Picards could have been so sure initially that the little girl found 250 miles away was theirs. Experts point out that parents often suffer from a very confusing psychological state after a child’s death. “When your child dies, the pain and devastation of the loss can feel overwhelming,” says Carolyn Brice, CEO of The Compassionate Friends, a British support group for bereaved parents.

The Picards are not the only family to have, in extreme grief, mistaken another child as their own. But lacking DNA evidence to confirm whether the body found in the woods was indeed little Pauline, this tragic mystery remains unsolved.
