North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump enjoyed a mouthwatering lunch, complete with prawn cocktail, dauphinoise potatoes and vanilla ice cream, during their historic summit in Singapore.

The political heavyweights met at the Capella Hotel island resort to bash out a deal to scrap nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula. The meeting was hailed as a success by the pair, with the US providing North Korea with security assurances in response to promises of denuclearization.

Before getting down to business the leaders bonded over a sumptuous meal. A leaked copy of the menu reveals some interesting culinary flare, with a mixture of both US and Korean fare to choose from.

To start, Trump and Kim were offered prawn cocktail, with Korean stuffed cucumber. Meanwhile, the main course included the option of beef, potato dauphinoise with a red wine sauce, as well as a combination of sweet and sour crispy pork.

Perhaps to please the US president, American ice cream brand Haagen Daz was also on the menu for desert, as was a dark chocolate tartlet ganache.

Details about their working lunch at the Capella, where a stay can cost up to $ 10,000 per night, were leaked on Tuesday. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has already let slip that his country will pick up the expected $ 20 million summit tab, which presumably means that the leaders ate for free.

  • One of Taiwan’s largest diplomatic allies, the Dominican Republic, cut ties on Tuesday in order to establish relations with China.
  • China refuses to have diplomatic relations with any country that recognizes Taiwan, leaving the self-ruled island with just 19 allies.
  • Taiwan said it was “deeply upset” about the end of its 77-year long relationship with the Dominican Republic.
  • The foreign ministry also seemed to be losing its patience with China’s “dollar diplomacy,” where aid and investment is traded for cutting ties to Taiwan.

Taiwan lost one of its largest diplomatic allies when the Dominican Republic cut ties to officially establish relations with China instead.

Within the communique to create diplomatic relations with China, which was signed by the Dominican foreign minister in Beijing on Tuesday, was the declaration that “the Government of the Dominican Republic severs ‘diplomatic relations’ with Taiwan as of this day.”

Britain and Russia are in the middle of their most intense diplomatic crisis since the Cold War over the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury earlier this month.

Theresa May expelled 23 Russian diplomats from the UK earlier week, prompting a reciprocal action from Moscow. Despite losing about 30% of its staff, though, activity in the embassy still seemed like business as usual.

Business Insider attended a press conference on Thursday with Russia’s ambassador to the UK, Alexander Yakovenko, and was given access to most — but not all — of the opulent building.

The Russian embassy is one of many on Kensington Palace Gardens in west London, known locally as “Embassy Row.” It’s the personal residence of Russia’s ambassador to London, Alexander Yakovenko.

The embassy recently lost about 30% of its staff as Theresa May expelled 23 Russian diplomats from the UK over the Skripal case. There used to be 78 Russian officials; now there are 55. Here they are going home:

Kensington Palace Gardens is home to embassies of other countries, including Saudi Arabia, France, and Nepal. Billionaires such as Roman Abramovich, Leonard Blavatnik, and Lakshmi Mittal all had houses here as of 2014. The average house here costs £35.7 million.

Following North Korea’s overtures of reconciliation beginning in January, the regime has made several diplomatic moves to indicate it is willing to resume talks between the US and neighboring South Korea.

After sending a delegation of athletes and members of the ruling family to the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, North Korea has made significant strides in thawing relations — though some political observer remain skeptical of the regime’s motives.

Here are the latest developments between the US, South Korea, and North Korea:

During her trip to South Korea, Kim Yo Jong — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister — delivered a letter to South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The letter indicated a willingness to foster better relations between the Koreas. There was also an invitation to visit Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital.

North Korea then sent Kim Yong Chol, the country’s vice chairman of the ruling Worker’s Party Central Committee and the country’s former intelligence chief, to South Korea for the Closing Ceremony at the Winter Olympics. Following Yo Jong’s lead, Yong Chol also delivered a bombshell announcement: that North Korea was willing to hold diplomatic talks with the US.

Emmanuel Macron is lending the UK a famous piece of Franco-British history in a grand diplomatic gesture https://briefnews.eu/emmanuel-macron-is-lending-the-uk-a-famous-piece-of-franco-british-history-in-a-grand-diplomatic-gesture/ https://briefnews.eu/emmanuel-macron-is-lending-the-uk-a-famous-piece-of-franco-british-history-in-a-grand-diplomatic-gesture/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2018 10:11:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmanuel-macron-is-lending-the-uk-a-famous-piece-of-franco-british-history-in-a-grand-diplomatic-gesture/ Bayeux Tapestry detailGetty Images

  • Emmanuel Macron reportedly approved the loan of the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry to Britain.
  • The artifact depicts the Norman Conquest of Britain in 1066.
  • Macron made the gesture ahead of a major meeting with Theresa May.
  • The French President has a penchant for grand gifts on the world stage.

Britain will be loaned a famed, priceless piece of art symbolising on of the crucial moments in its history after a grand diplomatic gesture by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Macron has given the go-ahead for the Bayeux Tapestry to be temporarily put on display in the United Kingdom for the first time since it was woven in the 11th century, according to The Times newspaper.

Theresa May Emmanuel Macron December 2017Reuters

The 68-metre tapestry is a visual record of the Norman Conquest, the French invasion of England which began with the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and installed William I as king.

It includes a depiction of the old king, Harold II, who took an arrow to the eye during the battle and died.

1066 was the last time the British Isles were taken over outright by a hostile invading force (though there were plenty of internal conflicts, and the so-called “Glorious Revolution” in which James II was displaced by William III).

Macron approved the transfer of the tapestry ahead of a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May, according to The Times, which added that it may not actually go on display until 2023.

The two are meeting on Thursday at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England, the training centre for Britain’s military officers and many royals and world leaders.

According to The Times, the tapestry gesture could belie more serious aspirations from the talks, which are said to include a hardline French stance on Brexit, demands for Britain to accept more migrants from the Calais refugee camp, and increased UK contributions to border policing.

Macron, who has styled himself a more commanding, imperial president that his predecessors, is given to grand gestures in his foreign affairs.

Earlier this month he made headlines by presenting Chinese President Xi Jinping with a horse called Vesuvius.

He also rolled out the red carpet for Donald Trump in July, inviting him to a grand military procession on Bastille Day and treating him to a lobster dinner inside the Eiffel Tower.

‘Trump failed’: Iran claims win in diplomatic battle over nuclear deal https://briefnews.eu/trump-failed-iran-claims-win-in-diplomatic-battle-over-nuclear-deal/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-failed-iran-claims-win-in-diplomatic-battle-over-nuclear-deal/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 10:30:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-failed-iran-claims-win-in-diplomatic-battle-over-nuclear-deal/ Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says that Washington failed to tear up the nuclear deal, which he calls a “long-lasting victory” for Tehran. Earlier, Trump vowed to pull out of the accord unless its “flaws” are fixed.

“The American administration has failed to undermine the nuclear deal… Trump, despite his repeated efforts, has failed to undermine the accord,” Rouhani said Sunday on state TV.

The Iranian leader called the deal “a long-lasting victory for Iran,” following Trump’s latest attack on the accord, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). On Friday, the US president threatened to not waive economic sanctions anymore, saying that America’s European allies have one last chance to fix the “disastrous flaws” of the deal, otherwise Washington will withdraw from it. Trump’s ultimatum was followed by new sanctions against Tehran, targeting 14 individuals and several entities for alleged links to ballistic missile development and human rights abuses.

The move immediately triggered an angry reaction from Iran, with its foreign ministry refusing to accept any changes to the long-negotiated deal and stating that it will “not take any measures beyond the commitments it has made.”

Rouhani’s stance was echoed on Sunday by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was a senior negotiator in the talks over the JCPOA. Araghchi stressed that no other state agrees with Washington’s approach, saying that Trump lost this “diplomatic battle” and is fully isolated from US allies, according to Iranian media.

The US has failed to find support among other parties of the nuclear agreement, which was signed in 2015 by the US, Britain, France, Germany, China, and Russia. On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry lambasted the US’ ultimatum-like rhetoric and called on the international community to protect the accord. At the same time, Beijing reiterated its support for the JCPOA, praising Tehran for adhering to the agreement.
Washington has repeatedly accused Tehran of violating the deal, despite the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) saying that Iran is in full compliance.

Assange getting Ecuadorian ID could be ‘first step’ to diplomatic immunity – rights activist https://briefnews.eu/assange-getting-ecuadorian-id-could-be-first-step-to-diplomatic-immunity-rights-activist/ https://briefnews.eu/assange-getting-ecuadorian-id-could-be-first-step-to-diplomatic-immunity-rights-activist/#respond Wed, 10 Jan 2018 21:56:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/assange-getting-ecuadorian-id-could-be-first-step-to-diplomatic-immunity-rights-activist/

The Ecuadorian ID reportedly granted to Julian Assange could mark his first step to obtaining diplomatic immunity, as Ecuador wants to resolve Assange’s indefinite embassy stay, human rights activist Peter Tatchell told RT.

“Granting an identity card is potentially the first step towards granting citizenship of Ecuador. And there is a possibility that he could be then granted a diplomatic status, which would give him diplomatic immunity,” Tatchell, who is a human rights campaigner and the director of the Peter Tatchell Foundation, said. He added that diplomatic immunity would mean that the WikiLeaks co-founder would be “free to leave the embassy and travel to Ecuador and the British government would not be able to lay a finger on him.”

Ecuadorian media reports Assange was given an ID card issued on December 21, citing “reliable sources” and providing the civil registry number of the document. The whistleblower also uploaded a photo of himself on Twitter wearing a yellow, blue and red shirt, the colors of the Ecuadorian flag, but made not comments on the issue.

Ecuador usually issues such ID cards for people claiming residency status, which are called cedulas. It is, however, unclear whether Assange was granted residency status or full citizenship.

However, Tatchell says “the Ecuadorian government has made it very clear that it wants a resolution [of this whole situation around Assange] and they are prepared to negotiate [to give] a way for Julian Assange [to leave] the embassy.” He added that “granting him [Assange] an identity card is a new development that can open the door for further things in the future.”

Diplomatic Trolling https://briefnews.eu/diplomatic-trolling/ https://briefnews.eu/diplomatic-trolling/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2017 11:12:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/diplomatic-trolling/

Turkey will ask the United Nations to void President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, it announced on Friday.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he is beginning UN initiatives to reverse the decision, which marked a departure from decades of US foreign policy and sparked unrest across the world.

Although based on real anger in the Muslim world, Erdogan’s rhetoric amounts to little more that diplomatic trolling. As the US is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, it has veto powers that could mean it would block any move to overturn Trump’s decision.

In a live speech broadcast to crowds in Konya, 150 miles south of the capital, Ankara, Erdogan said that Turkey would first seek annulment in the Security Council and, if that were unsuccessful, in the General Assembly.

“We will work for the cancellation of this illegal and unjust decision,” he said.

He also called for increased international efforts toward the recognition of Palestine, and declared that Muslim countries are setting up funds to protect Palestinian families, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu.

Turkey has taken the lead in vocally opposing Trump’s decision, announced on Dec. 6.

Erdogan summoned the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to Istanbul on Wednesday, when 57 nations issued a joint declaration recognizing the eastern half of Jerusalem as the capital of an as-yet nonexistent Palestinian state.

The uproar following the US announcement that it would move its embassy from Tel Aviv offered a unique moment of unity across the Muslim world. Leaders struggling to maintain domestic popularity have been able to exploit the genuine anger at Trump’s Jerusalem decision to rally the masses at little cost to themselves.

Turkey and Iran have been at the forefront of whipping up anti-American sentiment, but US allies such as Jordan, Morocco, Egypt, and even Saudi Arabia have issued strongly worded condemnations.

And Turkey isn’t the own Muslim-majority country to engage in diplomatic grandstanding. The foreign minister of Lebanon, which technically remains in a state of war with Israel, offered to establish an embassy in East Jerusalem.

However, anger at the decision remains palpable. Protests have erupted across the Muslim world from Indonesia to Mauritania and among diaspora communities in Europe. On Friday, clashes broke out between Israeli security forces and Palestinian protesters in several cities in the West Bank after several Palestinian factions called for a “day of rage” following noon prayers across the occupied territories. Dozens were injured, according to the official Ma’an News Agency.

In Turkey and other countries, domestic politics may be driving much of the posturing on the Jerusalem matter. Turkish opposition parties have noisily called on the Turkish government to open an embassy in East Jerusalem and recognize it as the capital of Palestine in retribution for the Trump move.

The Trump administration’s decision has forced even potential US allies to distance themselves from the White House. The heads of both Egypt’s Coptic Church and the famed Azhar School of Islamic Learning have rejected meetings with US Vice President Mike Pence in the aftermath of the announcement.

Yet Erdogan’s fierce rhetoric over the fallout has still sparked criticism. Despite years of tension between Israel and Turkey over the Palestinian issue, trade between the two nations has blossomed.

According to official Turkish statistics, the country’s exports to Israel have grown from $ 1.7 billion in 2007 to $ 2.7 billion in 2017, while imports grew from $ 1.1 billion to $ 1.3 billion.

Opposition figures have criticized Erdogan for condemning Israel while still allowing billions in energy and trade deals.

“The first thing to do to support the Palestinian people is to stop all trade, military, and diplomatic relations with Israel,” Mustafa Guven, a union leader, was quoted as saying by the newspaper Evrensel.

“Those who are doing trade with Israel are organizing protests against the same country,” said Kani Beko, head of the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers’ Unions of Turkey (DISK), according to the Arti Gercek news website. “They eat the lamb with the wolf and then cry together with the shepherd.”

Trump says China’s diplomatic efforts with North Korea appear to have ‘no impact on little rocket man’ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-chinas-diplomatic-efforts-with-north-korea-appear-to-have-no-impact-on-little-rocket-man/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-says-chinas-diplomatic-efforts-with-north-korea-appear-to-have-no-impact-on-little-rocket-man/#respond Fri, 01 Dec 2017 03:12:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-says-chinas-diplomatic-efforts-with-north-korea-appear-to-have-no-impact-on-little-rocket-man/ Kim Jong UnKRT via AP Video/AP

  • US President Donald Trump dismissed China’s diplomatic efforts to reign in North Korea.
  • Trump said in a tweet that the recently returned Chinese envoy seemed to have “no impact on Little Rocket Man.”
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Washington’s approach was dangerously provocative.

WASHINGTON/MOSCOW (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed a Chinese diplomatic effort to rein in North Korea’s weapons program as a failure on Thursday, while Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Beijing was doing a lot, but could do more to limit oil supplies to Pyongyang.

In a tweet, Trump delivered another insulting barb against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who he called “Little Rocket Man” and a “sick puppy” after North Korea test-fired its most advanced missile to date on Wednesday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Washington’s approach was dangerously provocative.

Trump’s tweets further inflamed tensions reignited this week after North Korea said it had successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile in a “breakthrough” that put the U.S. mainland within range of its nuclear weapons whose warheads could withstand re-entry to the Earth’s atmosphere.

“The Chinese envoy, who just returned from North Korea, seems to have had no impact on Little Rocket Man,” Trump said on Twitter, a day after speaking with Chinese President Chinese President Xi Jinping and reiterating his call for Beijing to use its leverage against North Korea.

Tillerson on Thursday welcomed Chinese efforts on North Korea, but said Beijing could do more to limit its oil exports to the country.

“The Chinese are doing a lot. We do think they could do more with the oil. We’re really asking them to please restrain more of the oil, not cut it off completely,” Tillerson said at the State Department. China is North Korea’s neighbor and its sole major trading partner.

While Trump has been bellicose at times in rhetoric toward North Korea, Tillerson has persistently held out hopes for a return to dialogue if North Korea shows it is willing to give up its nuclear weapons program.

However, Tillerson may not remain in his job long, with disagreements with Trump over North Korea being one factor. On Thursday, senior Trump administration officials said the White House was considering a plan to replace Tillerson with Mike Pompeo, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he still had confidence in diplomatic efforts on North Korea and that the United States would be “unrelenting” in working through the United Nations.

In spite of Trump’s rhetoric and warnings that all options, including military ones, are on the table in dealing with North Korea, his administration has stressed it favors a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Trump has pledged more sanctions in response to the latest test and, at an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting late Wednesday, the United States warned North Korea’s leadership would be “utterly destroyed” if war were to break out.

“This administration is focused on one big thing when it comes to North Korea, and that’s denuclearization of the Korean peninsula,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a regular White House briefing.

“Anything beyond that is not the priority at this point,” she said, responding to a question on whether regime change was on the administration’s agenda after Trump’s recent tweets and a speech by U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
