The lore of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth is vast and sometimes confusing. There’s over 9,000 years worth of intricate history that film and television has not even touched on. For those who have been watching Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” it’s been exciting to explore new corners of Middle-earth and the early lives of beloved characters like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). One of the key places that we are introduced to in the first episodes of the series is Valinor, also known as the Undying Lands. It is a tranquil, sprawling land where Galadriel grew up that she describes as a “winterless spring.”

In “The Return of the King” novel, Tolkien depicts Frodo’s experience in Valinor:

“Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water … the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.”

This language is eventually used in Peter Jackson’s film version during the song “Into the West.” Both Peter Jackson in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the “The Rings of Power” creators reflect Valinor’s immaculate beauty in their cinematography of shining, golden hues. Valinor is a mix between Mount Olympus and the Garden of Eden, the home of Middle-earth’s godlike beings and the immortal elves. The common misconception is that Valinor is a kind of heaven for everyone in Middle-earth but only elves and a select few are permitted to spend the rest of their lives there. It is a paradise with no pain or suffering. Galadriel has a different relationship with Valinor in all versions of Middle-earth tales.

The History Of Tolkien’s Valinor

In the books, Valinor exists on the continent of Aman, west of Middle-earth across the great ocean known as the Sundering Seas. Before, the ocean was a bridge of ice called the Helcaraxë which Galadriel walked across during the Exile of the Noldor in the First Age, when a group of elves went to defeat Morgoth in Middle-earth after he destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor. We see these trees in “The Rings of Power,” beautiful sources of light created by the Valar in ancient times. Their last flower and fruit was transformed into the sun and the moon. The rebellious Noldor are banned from returning to Valinor by the Valar.

In the Second Age, the Valar destroy passage to Aman after the men of Numenor attempt to invade Valinor to achieve immortality for the human race. The Valar take Valinor out of Aman and place it above the surface of the earth where you must follow The Straight Path “into the realm of hidden things, a mighty bridge invisible that passed through the air of breath and of flight (which were bent now as the world was bent),” Tolkien writes in “The Silmarillion.”

After the War of Wrath ends, the Valar pardon Galadriel and the other elves and allow them to return to Valinor but Galadriel refuses because she has a fierce desire to rule over her own kingdom. That is what motivated her to travel to Middle-earth more than overthrowing Morgoth. She remains in Middle-earth for two more ages to satisfy her craving for power.

Valinor In Peter Jackson’s Films

Our main glimpse of Valinor in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is during the deeply emotional ending of “The Return of the King.” Frodo travels to the Undying Lands with Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, and Celeborn. In the books, Sam, Legolas, and Gimli eventually go as well.

While the Undying Lands are for the elves, Frodo is invited so that he can heal from the immense damage the Ring did to his soul. Middle-earth could not save him from Sauron’s corruption and his painful suffering. He and Bilbo are rewarded for keeping the ring safe and are able to live the remainder of their days in serenity. Peter Jackson masterfully crafts this scene as a combination of heart-wrenching melancholy (I sob every time he says goodbye to the hobbits) and happiness that Frodo will finally be at peace.

The trilogy also references Galadriel’s complicated relationship with Valinor. She has clusters of star-like lights in her deep blue eyes because she is the last to have seen the light of the Two Trees. After she resists taking the One Ring when Frodo offers it to her, she references passing a “test” and is now able to “diminish and go into the West.” In other words, the Valar will let her return to the Undying Lands. Tolkien explains why Galadriel’s ban is lifted in the book “The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien”:

“She was pardoned because of her resistance to the final and overwhelming temptation to take the ring for herself.”

We see Galadriel at the end of “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” at the ship heading to Valinor because she has given up her lust for power for the greater good.

What The Rings Of Power Changes About Valinor

In the climactic moments of the first episode of “The Rings of Power,” Galadriel must choose between joining the other elves in Valinor, her beloved former home, or pursue Sauron in Middle-earth. In a heroic and lengthy sequence during the second episode, Galadriel turns back to complete her mission.

One of the biggest departures from Tolkien’s writing is that Galadriel is not banned from Valinor by the Valar. Instead, the High King of the elves Gil-galad allows Galadriel and her fellow warriors to travel to the Undying Lands. He doles out Valinor like a prize, not a deeply personal decision and something each elf can choose for themselves. The show treats Valinor like something that can be handed out by a ruler based on his own whims, completely erasing the will of the supreme Valar.

This completely changes the structure of leadership in Tolkien’s world, but perhaps “The Rings of Power” thought it was easier to depict it this way rather than delve even more into the dense mythology. By removing the Valar’s ban, Galadriel is torn between two separate worlds that she cares about deeply due to her need to avenge her brother Finrod. This makes for higher stakes, more dramatic tension, and an exciting narrative.

What “The Rings of Power” does get across, like Peter Jackson’s films, is that Valinor is a special, even holy place that promises comfort for characters, but only when they are truly ready to go there.

How the ‘American Werewolf’ Remake Differs From the Original, According to Max Landis https://briefnews.eu/how-the-american-werewolf-remake-differs-from-the-original-according-to-max-landis/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-american-werewolf-remake-differs-from-the-original-according-to-max-landis/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2017 05:12:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-american-werewolf-remake-differs-from-the-original-according-to-max-landis/ American Werewolf remake

Whether we like or not (we don’t), there’s going to be a remake of John Landis‘ horror-comedy classic An American Werewolf in London. But unlike most other remakes, this one is going to stay in the family: John Landis’ son Max Landis is penning the screenplay. The younger Landis took to his Twitter account to provide a a brief update on his American Werewolf remake, and reveal how it differs from his father’s original.

John Landis’ 1981 horror-comedy An American Werewolf in London is an all-time classic; a film that navigates between being genuinely funny and genuinely scary, and benefits from some game-changing special effects work courtesy of Rick Baker. As a whole, the film has stood the test of time. But we’re getting a remake of it anyway. John Landis’ son, screenwriter Max Landis, is currently penning the script for the American Werewolf and plans to direct the film himself.

The younger Landis recently took to his Twitter account to provide a brief update on the film. He began with a self-deprecating take on the writing process, announcing that he had finished his first draft of the script: “Finishing my first draft of An American Werewolf In London today. Took me way longer than usual because every time I opened the Final Draft file my laptop would slam closed under the weight of my father’s expectations.”

Then Landis added that he felt that “little happens” in the original film:

In the original film, two American backpackers in the UK stumble upon a village that happens to be home to a werewolf. When a Twitter user asked Landis why he thought the villagers in the original film didn’t stop the werewolf themselves, the screenwriter revealed that he’s exploring this detail in his script, and it will account for one of the biggest deviations from the original film: “Answering this question and the nature of the village’s role in the plot in the second and third act as of now are the biggest changes I’ve made to the original structure…Doing some fun stuff.”

Max Landis can be a polarizing figure. He’s a frequently in-demand screenwriter who occasionally takes time out of his busy schedule to hop onto Twitter and give opinions on other films, like the time he complained that Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a “Mary Sue,” a take that made me promptly roll my eyes so hard they fell out of my head.

That said, Landis does occasionally bang out a good script. His anti-superhero screenplay Chronicle was very good, and I’m one of the few people who thought the Landis-written American Ultra was entertaining. But we really do not need a remake of American Werewolf, and the fact that Landis thinks “little happens” in the original film makes me nervous that he’s adding a whole bunch of new, unnecessary plot points to his remake. One of American Werewolf‘s charms is that it’s very simple and streamlined. It would be a shame to sacrifice that.

How PTSD Differs From Other Anxiety Disorders https://briefnews.eu/how-ptsd-differs-from-other-anxiety-disorders/ https://briefnews.eu/how-ptsd-differs-from-other-anxiety-disorders/#respond Sun, 29 Jan 2017 16:10:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-ptsd-differs-from-other-anxiety-disorders/ PTSD differs from other anxiety

Anxiety can come in many forms, and not all of it is a disorder. Anxiety is a natural situation in which the body senses a real or perceived threat and responds with heightened sense of awareness, increased pulse rate, and the physical ability to flee from danger. This is a healthy and protective mechanism designed to keep people safe when they are in imminent danger. What happens, though, when those mechanisms begin and there is no real threat?

That’s when anxiety disorders can begin – there are many theories on what causes normal anxiety to morph into a disorder, but some of those include hereditary factors (those who have a family history of anxiety disorders are more likely to experience them), a history of traumatic events (such as witnessing a gruesome accident, being abandoned at an early age, the death of someone close) and those who have chemical dependencies such as drug and alcohol addiction, which can alter judgment and change brain chemicals.

Anxiety disorders don’t often receive as much attention as their common counterpart, clinical depression, although the two disorders often occur together and can even be difficult to distinguish from each other. Experts diagnosticians can sometimes have difficulty determining if someone is suffering from anxiety, depression, or both. What is important to know is that anxiety disorders are responsible for as many suicide attempts and successful suicides as is depression – and the risk is increased when both occur together. While many types of anxiety disorders may exist, the most common ones are worth educating yourself about, because it’s likely that someone close to you lives with one.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) occurs when individuals are anxious and they may not be able to pinpoint why – they are nervous, irritable, and have a general feeling that something is about to go wrong. This can deeply affect their ability to carry on activities of daily living because often their brain is racing, fearing the worst possible outcome of every scenario, and planning how to avoid anxiety-causing situations, which is all but impossible to do. This can interfere with work life, family life, and spiritual, emotional, and physical health, often robbing the person of happiness and causing difficulties with sleep and concentration. This can also make the individual more likely to turn to substance abuse as a means of maladaptive coping.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), however, is a specific condition that results from one or multiple traumatic incidents that can include things like war, mass shootings, personal assault, sexual assault, natural disasters, or any situation (like home invasion or armed robbery) that causes a person to feel a high level of terror, fear, or pain, according to The Mighty. This condition can affect every minute of every day of one’s psyche and is somewhat harder to treat, because intrusive thoughts and memories often play a key role in PTSD as opposed to Generalized Anxiety Disorder. When The Mighty asked some people to describe what living with PTSD was like, their answers were startling. It may give others insight as to the extreme nature of the illness and why it causes people to behave in certain ways, which can give loved ones an increased understanding and ability to support the person with PTSD.

Nargis D., a person with PTSD, put into words what living with the disorder feels like.

“It’s like you’re tidying your house before a dinner party. But there’s this one item that’s just out of place. The doorbell rings. It’s your guests. You just shove that item into the closet and tell yourself you’ll deal with it later. You start to do this every time. Filling the closest more and more. Saying to yourself that you’ll deal with it later. The closet becomes so full that it starts to creak. That’s your bodies way of saying ‘Hey! You got a lot of stuff to deal with! It’s time!’ But you keep thinking it’s fine. Out of sight, out of mind. You ignore the closet. Until one day it’s too much. The closet bursts. And everything comes flying out in weird and wacky ways. Panic attacks. Dissociative episodes. Depression. Anxiety. Flashbacks. Intrusive thoughts. And then you’re left lying on the floor with all the items that were stuffed into the closet, splattered around you. Forced to finally accept what happened. And forced to finally deal with it. Forced to clean up the items around you and find appropriate places for each thing. And then over time, slowly, you learn what to do with each item, and how to deal with each thing, uniquely.”

Fortunately, new treatments and understanding of PTSD emerge all the time, and it is a highly studied area of mental health, but that doesn’t mean more awareness isn’t necessary.

What have been your experiences with PTSD or being a loved one of someone who has been diagnosed with PTSD?
