  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis defended his decision to fly dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.
  • Over the weekend, he suggested that those migrants "hit the jackpot" by landing in Massachusetts.
  • But immigration experts say that language is dehumanizing and dangerous.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to praise his own politicking after flying dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard last week, but immigration experts say the stunt was dehumanizing to the migrants at the center of the controversy and minimized the oft-harrowing journeys endured by asylum-seekers.

DeSantis in the last week has faced criticism and compliments for the decision, in which Florida chartered two planes to fly about 50 undocumented migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to the Massachusetts island.

The GOP lawmaker's office later clarified that the move was part of Florida's "relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations" — the most recent effort by GOP leaders to highlight what they call a crisis at the US Southern border.

Immigration advocates have uniformly rebuked the stunt, accusing DeSantis of prioritizing politics — and specifically, his aims for higher office — over the real lives of the Venezuelan and Colombian migrants caught in the crossfire.

"We all know this is sheer political theater," Vicki Gaubeca, director of Southern Border Communities Coalition, told Insider. "Florida is not on the US-Mexico border, so the migrants were transported to Martha's Vineyard from Texas on Floridians' dime."

She added that, instead of "caring about human beings fleeing political or economical disasters and providing a humane, orderly solution," DeSantis, along with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, "chose to lay bare their cruelty, add another layer of suffering and make the problem worse."

During a weekend speech at a Republican rally in Wisconsin, DeSantis doubled down on the move, saying that the migrants he sent to Martha's Vineyard had "hit the jackpot to be in the wealthiest sanctuary jurisdiction in the world."

It's carefully-chosen language on DeSantis' part but doesn't represent the reality for most migrants, according to immigration experts.

"Migrants being transported under false pretenses, away from their intended home communities, with the families and friends willing to receive them, to an island with no immigration courts or ICE field offices where migrants can check-in, can hardly be considered 'hitting the jackpot,'" Nicole Ramos, Al Otro Lado's Border Rights Project director, said in a statement to Insider.

"It looks more like a different shade of family separation to me," Ramos continued.

The migrants who landed in Martha's Vineyard last week were given misleading brochures promising cash assistance and job placement services before touching down on the island, according to lawyers for the migrants. Some of the asylum seekers also told NPR that a woman, who solely identified herself as "Perla," promised they would receive work permits in Boston after arriving.

The migrants on Tuesday filed a federal class action lawsuit against DeSantis, claiming that the incident was a "premeditated, fraudulent, and illegal scheme."

The governor's ongoing rhetoric, including his "jackpot" remark, could have longterm, harmful repercussions for migrants, according to Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee's US/Mexico Border Program.

"By suggesting that the migrants he flew to Martha's Vineyard have a hit a 'jackpot,' he minimizes the harrowing experiences migrants have faced in their home countries and what they've encountered along dangerous routes," Rios told Insider.

He added: "This has the effect of dehumanizing them, which makes it easier for DeSantis' supporters to be intolerant of people in vulnerable conditions and easier to deny migrants and asylum seekers basic rights and protections."

Many migrants face danger and even the threat of death during their immigration experience, only to be met with further animosity once they reach the US, Rios said, which can have significant impacts on a person's mental health.

Earlier this week, an asylum seeker died by suicide in a New York City homeless shelter, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday. While there were few details released about the incident, Adams said at a press conference that the woman's death highlights the traumatizing experiences many migrants face.

"All local and state jurisdictions have the obligation to welcome migrants and asylum seekers with measures that uplift their dignity, that prioritize their emotional, mental, and physical integrity," Rios said.

Astronaut’s photo from ISS shows Earth in a different light https://briefnews.eu/astronauts-photo-from-iss-shows-earth-in-a-different-light/ https://briefnews.eu/astronauts-photo-from-iss-shows-earth-in-a-different-light/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 08:51:45 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/astronauts-photo-from-iss-shows-earth-in-a-different-light/ An American astronaut has shared a wonderfully unique image of Earth taken from the International Space Station (ISS).

Three-time space visitor Don Pettit, who currently has his feet on terra firma, posted the remarkable photo on his Twitter account on Monday.

It may not be obvious at first glance — or even second — but the long-exposure image (below) shows Earth through the windows of the space station’s Cupola module. If you look carefully toward the bottom left of the picture, you’ll also see some beautiful star trails.

“Fish-eye lens long-exposure view of the Earth from the Cupola, aboard the ISS,” the astronaut wrote in his tweet. “Below, city lights flow as orange streaks, and faint star trails that show the Earth’s rotation are visible in the lower left. Astrophotography can find exciting ways to combine both science and art!”

In recent days, another of Pettit’s images showing Earth lights and star trails caused quite a stir online.

Pettit’s most recent space trip was in 2012, so space fans must be delighted that the experienced astronaut and keen astrophotographer is sharing some of the extraordinary images that he captured so many years ago.

While Pettit’s work can be beautifully surreal, more recent ISS inhabitants have been sharing Earth images that show more clearly various features of the land and sea.

French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, for example, is a keen photographer and during his most recent mission captured some fabulous shots of our planet. And if you think the enviable viewpoint 250 miles above Earth would make it easy to capture such shots, then think again. It actually takes a great deal of planning.

With its seven windows, the Cupola module offers the best views of Earth and beyond from the confines of the space station. This makes it a popular spot for astronauts to go and relax during their downtime.

But the largely unobstructed views also make the Cupola an important work location as astronauts can use it to monitor and assist not only spacewalks but also the arrival and departure of spacecraft.

Shazam! Director David F. Sandberg Almost Directed A Completely Different Superhero Movie https://briefnews.eu/shazam-director-david-f-sandberg-almost-directed-a-completely-different-superhero-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/shazam-director-david-f-sandberg-almost-directed-a-completely-different-superhero-movie/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 08:33:30 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/shazam-director-david-f-sandberg-almost-directed-a-completely-different-superhero-movie/

One of the most notable aspects of David F. Sandberg’s 2019 superhero film “Shazam!” is its sense of wide-eyed wonderment. The title character is a tall, muscular, adult superhero with lightning powers and the ability to fly. In actuality, Shazam is the alter ego of one Billy Batson (Asher Angel), an orphaned teen who, through a complicated set of circumstances, acquired the ability to become a superpowered adult. Much of “Shazam!” is devoted to Billy and his foster brother Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) reacting with astonishment to Billy’s new superpowers. Indeed, it takes Billy and Freddy the bulk of “Shazam!” to realize that being a superhero involves more strength of character than raw power.

The film’s “little kid” sense of awe is something that is woefully missing from a lot of modern superhero cinema which increasingly skews toward oblique interconnected mythologies and the turgid navel-gazing of Nietzschean overmen. “Shazam!” is light and fun and understands the appeal superheroes have for youths. It’s the best superhero movie at least since Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2.”

Given its fresh-faced innocence and little-kid appeal, it’s bizarre to think that Sandberg was once attached to a far stranger and weirder superhero flick. In a recent interview on Instagram, portions of which were transcribed on CBR, Sandberg revealed that he almost took on the alien parasite film “Venom.”

Venom

For “Spider-Man” fans, Venom is a well-understood and long-established villain who has been giving Spider-Man trouble since his creation in 1988. For outsiders, his origin is incredibly oblique. The story goes — very briefly — that Spider-Man, while visiting an alien world (don’t ask), stepped into a machine that wrapped his body in a brand new, all-black Spider costume. It would eventually be revealed that his new outfit was not made of cloth, but was in fact a living, intelligent alien blob that could bond with a host organism and change itself into clothes. The blob ended up seeping too deeply into Spider-Man’s brain, necessitating that he painfully separate himself from the symbiote. It then wrapped itself around a man named Eddie Brock, a rival of Peter Parker’s, warping into a large, fanged, cannibal version of Spider-Man. Functionally, Venom (as it called itself) is Spider-Man’s evil twin.

Rueben Fleischer’s 2018 film “Venom” is comfortably separated from “Spider-Man,” and Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is merely infected by an alien parasite. When it emerges from his body and wraps itself around Eddie, it looks like a shark made of tar and snot. Venom may have been part of the pop consciousness for 30 years, but it still looks dang ugly.

Sandberg revealed that he was once offered the chance to direct “Venom” when a fan asked point blank if he had ever been offered anything. Sandberg’s answer was brief: “I read the script for and had a meeting about ‘Venom’ but I was already going down the path of ‘Shazam!’ and felt that I’d rather do that than pursue ‘Venom.'”

It’s as simple as that. Sandberg just wanted to do “Shazam!” more.

Their Sequels

Both “Shazam!” and “Venom” have one notable thing in common: they gain power from their own characters and stories and don’t rely exclusively on their connection to other films in a franchise. “Venom,” at least until a post-credits stinger, doesn’t link to other films in any other Marvel Comics film canon, and “Shazam!,” in having a few references to Batman and an adorable cameo from Superman, is part of the DCEU. But otherwise, both films are stronger for living in their own worlds. Although tonally very different, both movies are arguably good for the same reason.

They were also big hits. “Shazam!” made $ 366 million, and “Venom” made a whopping $ 856 million. “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” a bonkers, 90-minute trifle, expanded the relationship between Eddie and his symbiote into a straight-up queer romance, while “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” will pit Billy against villains played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. “Fury of the Gods” is due in theaters on March 17, 2023.

With the “Spider-Man” extended universe in a bizarre place (“Madame Web,” anyone?) and the future of the DCEU uncertain, it seems “Venom” and “Shazam!” will remain stalwart in being disconnected. Thank goodness.

GOP Rep. Michael McCaul says Trump has a ‘different set of rules’ regarding the declassification of documents https://briefnews.eu/gop-rep-michael-mccaul-says-trump-has-a-different-set-of-rules-regarding-the-declassification-of-documents/ https://briefnews.eu/gop-rep-michael-mccaul-says-trump-has-a-different-set-of-rules-regarding-the-declassification-of-documents/#respond Sun, 04 Sep 2022 21:40:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/gop-rep-michael-mccaul-says-trump-has-a-different-set-of-rules-regarding-the-declassification-of-documents/ Michael McCaul
Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas.

  • McCaul says "a different set of rules" applies to Trump regarding the declassification of documents.
  • While on ABC, McCaul said he wouldn't personally transport such materials to his residence.
  • Trump last month claimed that he declassified the documents that were found at Mar-a-Lago.

GOP Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas on Sunday said that while he wouldn't personally take classified materials to his personal residence, he argued during an interview that "a different set of rules" applied to former President Donald Trump.

During an interview on ABC's "This Week" with co-anchor Martha Raddatz, McCaul — a former federal prosecutor and the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — said that while he had extensive experience handling sensitive documents, he also had never served as Commander-in-chief.

"You know, I have lived in the classified world most of my professional career, I personally wouldn't do that," he said of transporting classified materials to his residence. "But I'm not the president of the United States."

He continued: "He has a different set of rules that apply to him. I know they were taken out of the White House while he was president and whether or not he declassified those documents remains to be seen. He says he did. I don't have all the facts there."

Last month, the FBI searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where federal officials retrieved several boxes of classified and top secret documents.

The subsequent release of the search revealed that agents were looking for documents connected to potential violations of the Espionage Act, which bars the unauthorized removal of defense-related information that could aid a foreign government. Trump is also being investigated for possible obstruction of justice violations.

The documents — regardless of whether or not they were considered to be classified — were supposed to be turned over to the National Archives upon the former president's departure from the Oval Office, per the Presidential Records Act.

Last month, Trump said that the documents taken by agents were "declassified," but over a dozen ex-Trump, White House officials disputed his claims.

McCaul later in the interview remarked that he "didn't have all the facts" regarding the FBI search.

"I know they were taken out of the White House while he was president and whether or not he declassified those documents remains to be seen," he said. "He says he did. I don't have all the facts there."

"There is a process for declassification. But again, the president's in a very different position than most of us in the national security space. We — the relevant committees on the Hill — have asked for briefings on this to find out what was so important here from a national security standpoint that would merit such an extreme measure to have a search warrant on a former president of the United States," he added.

The Mandalorian Recap: Season 2 Finale Brings Surprises, Post-Credits Scene Teases a Different Season 3 https://briefnews.eu/the-mandalorian-recap-season-2-finale-brings-surprises-post-credits-scene-teases-a-different-season-3/ https://briefnews.eu/the-mandalorian-recap-season-2-finale-brings-surprises-post-credits-scene-teases-a-different-season-3/#respond Fri, 18 Dec 2020 13:42:28 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-mandalorian-recap-season-2-finale-brings-surprises-post-credits-scene-teases-a-different-season-3/

RELATED STORIES

The following recap, by the very definition of the word recap, contains major spoilers from The Mandalorian‘s Season 2 finale.

The Mandalorian sought to rescue Grogu from Moff Gideon’s clutches in the Disney+ hit’s Season 2  finale — and along the way, he got an unexpected helping hand.

A gloved helping hand, from no less than Luke Skywalker himself.

Mando & Co.’s  overall rescue plan unfurled pretty perfectly. After commandeering an Imperial shuttle carrying Dr. Pershing and then soliciting the help of Bo-Katan and Koska Reeves, they staged a fake dogfight between the shuttle and Boba Fett in Slave I. Dropping out of hyperspace near Gideon’s light cruiser, Bo in the shuttle requested an emergency landing, but was denied. As dispatched TIE fighters got into it with Slave I, Bo landed/skidded the shuttle in the cruiser’s launch tube, keeping other TIE fighters from getting out. As Bo, Koska, Cara and Fennec hopped out of the shuttle and started mowing through stormtroopers, Mando slipped off to find Grugu — while hopefully sealing off in time the platoon of powering-up Dark Troopers, along the way.

Mando was a second too slow, though, and had to duke it out with one Dark Trooper, ultimately (but barely) besting it by driving his Beskar spear through its neck and wrenching off its head; he then sucked the others out into space by opening an airlock. The ladies meanwhile made easy work of the troopers they faced, before arriving at an empty bridge. We and Mando then saw that Gideon was in Grogu’s cell, holding the kid at Darksaber-point. After some back and forth, Mando said Gideon could keep his saber as long as he gets the kid. Gideon agreed… but then reneged on that deal, soon as Mando turned his back to pick up Grogu, and a duel ensued — Darksaber vs. spear of pure Beskar (the only material it cannot cut through). Mando wound up knocking the Darksaber away and gaining the upper hand, but spared Gideon’s life. The look on Bo’s face when Mando brought the Moff to the bridge was not a happy one, however, seeing as the Darksaber’s true “power” comes from having seized it during battle. Meaning, it was of less use to her unless she beat Mando in combat for it.

That sticky wicket, however, took a back seat to the more pressing matter of the Dark Troopers returning to and boarding the cruiser, marching toward the bridge, and parking outside its blast door. As they begin hammering at the door, crimping it bit by bit, Mando and the others raised their guns and readied for what Gideon warned will be a futile battle. But then….

But then, an X-Wing appears outside, and it boards the  cruiser. The monitors show a robed figure masterfully wielding a green lightsaber, slicing and dicing its way through Dark Trooper after Dark Trooper, using a Jedi hand wave to lob the occasional one out of the way/against a wall. Once the Jedi arrives at the bridge, Mando — clocking Grogu’s interest/”connection”  — OKs the door to be opened. In walks the Jedi, wearing a glove over one bionic hand. He pushes back his hood, and it’s Luke Skywalker! (I hereby give props to those who suggested we’d get a CGI’d version of a younger Mark Hamill. I naively underestimated the production budget. Respect, plus 250 Imperial Power User points.)

Mandalorian Luke Skywalker“Are you a Jedi?” asks Mando. “I am,” answers Luke, who then says to Grogu, “Come, little one.”

Mando suggests Grogu doesn’t want to go, but Luke explains that  while Grugo is strong with the Force, “talent without  training is nothing.” (Knows of that, he does.)  Luke assures Mando, “I will give my life to protect him,” adding that Grogu  is not safe until he has mastered his abilities. Mando concedes, telling his wee ward, “Go on. That’s who you belong with, one of your kind. I will see you again, I promise.” At Grogu’s urging, Mando removes his helmet for a proper face-to-face farewell, before setting him down… to then be greeted by an arriving R2-D2! The two little guys seem quite excited to meet. Luke picks up Grogu and says to Mando et al, “May the Force be with you.”

But wait, there is more.

Because in a post-credits scene, we return to Tatooine — namely, what used to be Jabba the Hutt’s palace, where Bib Fortuna is now living large. His good time is interrupted by laser fire, as Fennec Shand comes down the stairs, using one of her shots to free a shackled Twi-lek. Boba Fett follows behind her, and Bib begins to go on about the “rumors” he had heard of the great bounty hunter’s demise — but he gets cut short/dead by a blaster shot. Boba then claims the “throne,” while Fennec grabs some blue booze to swig. A title card comes up saying, “THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT…. COMING DECEMBER 2021” — as in the announced premiere date for Season 3.

Is The Mandalorian done with Baby Yoda? And with Din Djarin? If so, what is your excitement level for the Boba-centric Season 3, if that’s indeed what “The Book of Boba Fett” is?

Snowpiercer Review: TNT Series Offers a Different Kind of Ride Than 2013 Film https://briefnews.eu/snowpiercer-review-tnt-series-offers-a-different-kind-of-ride-than-2013-film/ https://briefnews.eu/snowpiercer-review-tnt-series-offers-a-different-kind-of-ride-than-2013-film/#respond Sun, 10 May 2020 22:19:02 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snowpiercer-review-tnt-series-offers-a-different-kind-of-ride-than-2013-film/

RELATED STORIES

Snowpiercer‘s four-and-a-half year journey to the small screen ends on Sunday, May 17, when it pulls into the proverbial station at TNT. When all is said and done, was it the little engine that could? Or not quite?

What you get out of TV’s Snowpiercer largely depends on what you expect from it. Yes, it is an adaptation of the lauded 2013 film of the same name, which starred Chris Evans and was directed by future Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho, as well as the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige. But it tells a distinct story set in that same world, where seven years after an attempt to “fix” global warming instead turned the planet into an unlivable ice ball, the remainder of humanity circles the globe aboard the titular 1,001-car train.

As in both pieces of source material, class warfare is a dominant theme, seeing as the Snowpiercer is strictly, brutally segregated by class — with the last car, the “tail,” densely populated by people who literally fought to illegally board the train before its departure, without tickets.

But whereas the film purposely paced out its reveals of the perks availed the front cars (as Evans’ rebellion leader broached carriage upon carriage), the TV series’ premise allows for a more immediate exposure to the third-, second- and first-class sections. Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) stars as Andre Layton, a “tailie” whose pre-“freeze” line of work was as a police detective. As such, when a murder threatens to upend the carefully regulated class structure, Layton is enlisted by Hospitality chief Melanie Cavill (A Beautiful Mind’s Jennifer Connelly) to  begrudgingly travel up-train to solve the case. In the course of this outsider’s closely monitored investigation, he and we are introduced to the assorted cultures and denizens within each section of the train, including an eclectic community known as The Chains, the (remarkably cavernous) Night Car and the aquarium-like Ocean Car. All the while, Mr. Wilford — the visionary, reclusive creator of the train whose name is uttered with reverence — communicates his decisions and edicts via Melanie.

Till keeps a close eye on Layton’s detective work

Other members of the primary cast include — but by no means are limited to! — Alison Wright (The Americans) as Ruth, Melanie’s right-hand woman; Mickey Sumner (Low Winter Sun) as Till, a Brakeman who serves as Layton’s partner; Katie McGuinness (Hollywood) as Josie, an intrepid tailie; Annalise Basso as first-class brat LJ; Sheila Vand (24: Legacy) as Zarah, an old flame of Layton’s/close friend of a murder suspect; Mike O’Malley as Brakeman Roche; and Steven Ogg (Walking Dead) as a tailie whose approach to revolution threatens to be a bit more reckless than Andre’s.

Snowpiercer lumbers out of the gate, and you have to wonder if that is a result of its prolonged, oft-rerouted trip to the screen. Some two years after the film came out and with Bong Joon-ho on board as an EP, the TV series first went into development with Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) as writer. In January 2018, a pilot was ordered to series… though Friedman was replaced as showrunner just weeks later. Scott Derrickson, who directed (and sang the praises of) the original pilot, declined to return for reshoots, citing creative differences with new showrunner Graeme Manson (Orphan Black). (At last year’s Comic-Con, it was revealed that barely any of the original pilot lived on.) In May 2019, the series was curiously bounced from TNT to sister channel TBS… only to be moved back to the drama hub in September.

While Episode 1 overexerts itself juggling multiple storylines (there’s a B-story involving a young tailie that simply vanishes for long stretches), the episodes that follow are more tightly wound as the murder case, which dominates half of the 10-episode season, takes frightful turns. For purists, there are callbacks to several of the film’s more vivid elements, such as the grimy protein bars parsed out to the tailies and the chilling punishment exacted upon those who misbehave. Among the ensemble, Diggs is well-cast as a tailie who ruffles upper-crust feathers; in Episode 4, he has an entertaining sequence that evokes 48 Hours‘ Reggie Hammond raising hell at that honky-tonk. Playing someone more human than Tilda Swinton did in the film, Connelly nicely juggles Melanie’s icy, passengers-facing facade with the MIT and Yale grad’s warmer private life.

Visually, TV’s Snowpiercer is not as claustrophobic as the big-screen version; the individual sets all seem to be as narrow or spacious as they need to be, though always within a certain amount of reason (especially if you are able to buy into the notion of a 1,001-car train). And if the movie ever left you wanting to dive deeper into the various train sections, or learn more about the how of sustaining a society aboard a perpetually moving vehicle, the series (which is already renewed for Season 2) promises to answer such questions.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Spread over at least two seasons, TNT’s Snowpiercer will be a longer, less-rollicking ride than the 2013 film. But its version of a subzero dystopia promises to more richly realized.

In the latest series of Vikings, it has been no secret that Ragner Lothbrok’s (played by Travis Fimmel) son Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) has been struggling with PTSD and substance abuse. However, no one was expecting this to lead him to commit one of the most shocking acts the series has ever seen.

Hvitserk was haunted by the burning ghost of his dead love Thora (Eve Connolly) and lived in fear Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) would return.

However, a bad hallucination led him to believe he was killing a huge serpent which represented Ivar’s presence, when in fact he had fatally wounded Lagertha.

Following the murder, Hvitserk fled the scene, leaving Lagertha to enter the Great Hall of Valhalla.

However, things could have been very different.

“So to that extent everything fell into place in the end. But for a long time I didn’t know. I was waiting myself to see what would happen.”

The scene was an emotional watch as fans saw the famous Viking utter her last words, welcoming death.

Years after the Seer had predicted it, a son of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) was the one to kill Lagertha.
