Every 22 minutes, a woman in Canada dies of a heart attack. But the majority don’t have to, experts say, warning that more women will die unnecessarily if the medical community doesn’t tailor care to their needs.

Christmas Dies Hard https://briefnews.eu/christmas-dies-hard/ https://briefnews.eu/christmas-dies-hard/#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2022 15:12:55 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/christmas-dies-hard/ We knew the doors were about to open when “Ride of the Valkyries” began to boom over the public-address system. By 4 a.m. on Black Friday in Athens, Georgia, several hundred people had lined up outside Best Buy in the predawn chill, supervised by police straddling motorcycles and ambassadors from a local Chick-fil-A handing out free breakfast biscuits wrapped in foil. Our most dedicated patrons had been sitting outside in folding chairs since the day before.

At the front of the line, some people clutched sheets of paper handed out by managers guaranteeing a deeply discounted laptop or camera. (Best Buy devised this ticketing system during my tenure as a salesperson in the mid-2000s to avoid the sort of stampede that makes the news every year.) But many more people had come out in the middle of the night, not to buy a particular product, but to bear witness to the bacchanal of extreme shopping itself and maybe pick up a $ 5 DVD. I’m still not sure whether, in the Apocalypse Now scene that “Ride of the Valkyries” was intended to evoke, the store’s employees were supposed to be the soldiers in helicopters or the Vietnamese villagers below.

There were no near-death experiences during the three years that I helped open Best Buy on Black Friday, even if the occasional shopper was overcome with holiday spirit and tackled a palletful of discounted Blu-ray players. The mornings were busy, but they crackled with a mildly perverse consumerist conviviality. For most of the people who thronged the store, the wee-hours shopping trip was as much a part of their Thanksgiving tradition as turkey. Store employees feasted, too—it was the one day of the year when my Best Buy location acknowledged how backbreaking retail work is, stocking our break room with a free lunch of fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. My co-workers and I jockeyed for those opening shifts because the eight hours always flew by—a wild reprieve from the everyday monotony for employees and even shoppers. It was a frankenholiday, pieced together from leftover parts of Thanksgiving and Christmas, but with a life of its own.

Despite ages of hand-wringing from both ends of the political spectrum—either the annual carnival of consumerism is obscene and wasteful, or gifts shouldn’t supplant Jesus as the reason for the season—holiday shopping has metastasized. Black Friday is now more of a euphemism for weeks of pre-Thanksgiving sales than a reference to a fixed moment in time. Every year, it seems to get bigger, as do the gestures of those pushing against it. Nordstrom, for one, has used its store windows in the weeks before Thanksgiving to promise shoppers it won’t jump the gun on Christmas decorations, while the big-box stores have begun opening on Thanksgiving itself, cannibalizing the holiday that once formed Black Friday’s pretext. (Amid this year’s pandemic, Best Buy has joined other major retailers in announcing that it will be closed on Thanksgiving.)

[From the November 2020 issue: Why Americans have turned to nesting]

This is where, in this year of all years, I should solemnly intone that things will be—will have to be—different. So much about holiday shopping seems impossible, or at least ill-advised: the crowds, the exorbitant expenditures, the elderly mall Santas greeting an endless stream of stuffy-nosed children. Retail and delivery workers have already been pushed past the breaking point in their “essential” jobs, and shipping delays and inventory shortages have dogged stores since March. If any of the hand-wringers really wanted to sever Christmas from consumerism, now would be the time. But the Ghost of Christmas Past has much to tell us about what we should expect this year, and shopping isn’t going anywhere.

People often identify holiday profligacy as a modern problem, hastened by malls and chain stores and online shopping. But the history of indulgent celebrations and the scolds trying to end them is the history of civilization itself. Russell Belk, a researcher who studies consumer culture at York University, in Ontario, dates the fight over Christmas waste all the way back to the ancient Roman holiday of Saturnalia, a days-long December feast and the predecessor of Christmas. “There were complaints at the time that it was too materialistic, that people were hosting banquets for their friends and spending lavish amounts of money and they shouldn’t be doing that,” he told me.

For American and British Christmas in particular, another set of scolds helped get us into this shopping mess in the first place. Before the Victorian era, the Christmas season was considered a time not so much to exchange gifts but to eat, drink, and be merry, “a little like Mardi Gras,” says Leigh Eric Schmidt, a historian of American religion and the author of Consumer Rites: The Buying and Selling of American Holidays. Those celebrations were beloved by working people, who got a break between Christmas and New Year’s from the informal subsistence labor that characterized their agrarian lifestyle.

But in the newly industrialized cities of the late 19th century, the drunken, leisurely December holidays began to change. “Once some of those traditions are in more urban settings, where there’s a more discernible working class, they’re increasingly seen by the middle class and elites as more dangerous and destructive,” Schmidt told me. The interests of business and religious leaders aligned, and they endeavored to recast the winter holiday as pious and family-centric, revolving around the home instead of the tavern. They also pushed to shorten the holiday break—more Americans now had bosses, and those bosses wanted them back at work.

The rebranding of Christmas was an unmitigated success. And in turn, the holiday that the capitalist and merchant classes once deemed a threat to productivity had become “an incredible opportunity to promote consumption” of newly available mass-market goods, Schmidt said. Department stores also stoked demand, decorating their windows to make them destinations unto themselves. Macy’s and Marshall Field’s and Saks became temples for a new kind of religious observance: buying, buying, buying to fulfill the promise of Christmas.

In America, the economic, the religious, and the patriotic can’t be easily separated. Dell deChant, a religion professor at the University of South Florida and the author of The Sacred Santa: Religious Dimensions of Consumer Culture, calls Christmas “a huge ritual celebration honoring the economy and feeding the economy.” God, country, and cash are particularly tightly entwined during a year when America’s leaders can’t stop telling us that keeping the economy humming is our sacred duty.

Even in normal times, Christmas is essential to that effort—the moniker “Black Friday” has murky origins, but it stuck around to mark the day when consumer spending is said to finally push American retailers to annual profitability, or “into the black.” (Whether this actually happens is highly debatable.) During the Great Depression, arguably a time similar to our own, President Franklin D. Roosevelt went so far as to move the date of Thanksgiving by a full week to lengthen the shopping season.

Granted, certain aspects of Christmas won’t be the same in 2020. Many of us won’t be able to travel great distances to visit our families, and older relatives might not be able to see much of anyone at all. Two hundred thousand people and counting are gone, and millions of others have lost the income that funds bounteous celebrations. Still, deChant believes that the drive to create as much of the old Christmas feeling as possible will likely be strong.

[Read: How we survive the winter]

“Christmas is a great normalizing experience—it’s powerful in terms of our personal and cultural identity,” he says. “If we’re not able to consume, then, to a certain extent, we’re marginalized—within the culture, as well as in our own minds.” For many Americans who don’t celebrate Christmas, sitting out the foofaraw while the whole country conducts Christmas consumption is an annual dose of alienation. For people who normally participate but suddenly find themselves unable to do so, the sense of detachment might even be more piercing for its novelty. Buying not just gifts, but decorations, sweets, and the trappings of a Christmas feast are deeply entrenched customs, and many Americans will want to hang on to those rituals in a world where so much else has been disrupted. For some, keeping Christmas, as a transformed Scrooge put it, will feel profoundly comforting. For others, the wish to do Christmas right will be tinged with defiance. Think we can’t buy gifts galore and decorate like busy little elves straight through a disaster? Think again.

Outlander season 6: Jamie Fraser’s ghost explained as highlander dies before wife Claire https://briefnews.eu/outlander-season-6-jamie-frasers-ghost-explained-as-highlander-dies-before-wife-claire/ https://briefnews.eu/outlander-season-6-jamie-frasers-ghost-explained-as-highlander-dies-before-wife-claire/#respond Sat, 03 Apr 2021 02:08:57 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/outlander-season-6-jamie-frasers-ghost-explained-as-highlander-dies-before-wife-claire/

“Jamie dies first and keeps his promise that he’ll find Claire in death, and as he waits he takes advantage of opportunities to see her on the holidays when the spirit and real world are open to each other, like Samhain.

“If DG says that the series ends in Scotland, then I’m guessing Jamie dies in Scotland, and so his ghost can only roam there, so we don’t see his ghost visiting her in Boston, etc.

“Claire would only be in Scotland on these kinds of holidays at the beginning of book 1 and maybe once or twice more while she’s with Jamie in the 1740’s before/after Paris, so this time we see him visiting her is kind of his only opportunity.

“Maybe every year he visits her until she dies and joins him.”

Greenleaf Recap: The Truth Shall Set You Free — Plus, [Spoiler] Dies?!? https://briefnews.eu/greenleaf-recap-the-truth-shall-set-you-free-plus-spoiler-dies/ https://briefnews.eu/greenleaf-recap-the-truth-shall-set-you-free-plus-spoiler-dies/#respond Wed, 05 Aug 2020 08:37:15 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/greenleaf-recap-the-truth-shall-set-you-free-plus-spoiler-dies/ Warning: The following contains the kind of spoilers for Tuesday’s penultimate Greenleaf that will leave you screaming “Lord have mercy!” — and not in a praying way.

Early on in Tuesday’s Greenleaf, Bishop did his damnedest to sell AJ on the notion of being saved, promising his grandson that once he let God into his life, he’d flash a smile that was equal in magnificence to “10 Grand Canyons.” But in hopes of making his hard sell come off like a soft one — too late for that, pal — James added that there was, you know, no rush. Except that there was. A major one. Because by the end of the episode, it appeared that Bishop wouldn’t live long enough to see AJ have a come-to-Jesus moment! What in heaven’s name happened? Read on…

greenleaf recap season 5 episode 7 bishop james dies‘I WON’T PLANT THIS NEW CHURCH OF MINE IN THE SHADOW OF ANOTHER SCANDAL’ | As “The Seventh Day” began, Grace bailed Darius out of jail. He wasn’t dead — whew! — Bob had just had him thrown behind bars for driving around high on PCP and resisting arrest. As if! While Darius took off to meet with the family that was going to inform on Eden Vale Lending, Gigi headed for a sit-down with Aaron. It seemed that when City On a Hill bought that land from Jacob and Kerissa, their affiliation with H&H hadn’t been disclosed; if that was the case, the Greenleafs might be able to get a cease-and-desist order in time to stop the church from being bulldozed at 2. That’s right, folks! Buckle up — this hour was going fly by so quickly, it felt like we were watching in fast-forward!

At the Greenleaf estate, James served Lady Mae breakfast in bed and, hoping she’d agree to move up their wedding date, presented her with her old engagement ring. “You said yes the first time I gave it to you,” he noted optimistically. Unfortunately, she refused to budge, not until they came up with a compromise to offer Tara and Rochelle. In turn, he refused to budge. “Offering Tara anything,” he argued, “is like admitting I’ve done something wrong.” That being the case, “this,” she said, rejecting the ring, “will have to wait until Flag Day.” Elsewhere in the house, Zora pressured her dad to find out if she could stay in Camilla’s guest bedroom in Hoboken — “a phrase,” she added, “I cannot say without dissolving into a pool of steamy gray uncoolness.” Since Jacob hadn’t done so — Kerissa and Winkie had just left a day earlier — Zora suggested a studio apartment that she’d found in Brooklyn. He had to love that, she thought. It was so small, it had “no room for a boy.” Later, she went so far as to suggest that Sophia go East with her — and no, not only to foot the bill. Although, yeah, that, too.

greenleaf recap season 5 episode 7 bishop james dies‘CAN WE AT LEAST DESTROY SOMETHING? THANK YOU!’ | At Calvary, Judee looked like she was about to start tearing apart the church by hand when Grace and Aaron showed up with a temporary injunction to stop the demolition. Fernando’s failure to disclose City On a Hill’s association with H&H, they explained, constituted real-estate fraud. But Kerissa knew about the connection, Fernando said. “She enjoyed it, even — immensely.” (Dude, ew.) Lickety-split, Gigi called Jacob, who called Kerissa, who admitted, um… oh… yeah, she knew. (Oh, Kerissa!) Then Noah showed up at the church — told ya s–t was happening right, left and center this episode! — to say that he’d found Otis, Mrs. Davis’ old caretaker. When AJ’s parents sat down with the geezer, he finally revealed the connection between “that Negro” Darryl and Mrs. Davis: He was her secret son!

Back at Greenleaf Manor, Lady Mae suggested to Tara that the family could sell some land and give the young woman and her sister a nice payment. Alas, no way would Rochelle go for that, Tara said. She wouldn’t rest until Bishop confessed that he’d murdered their father. Later, James, Lady Mae and Charity were watching a news report about how Bob would be announcing his Senate run at the demolition when in came Gigi with her bombshell about Darryl and Mrs. Davis. Call Rochelle and Tara, Bishop told Lady Mae, and tell them to come over. For real? “Just trust me.” Once Tara and Rochelle arrived, Bishop and Lady Mae informed them that Mrs. Davis had been their grandmother. As such, “we’re ready to concede that your blood ties to this property preceded our legal ones.” As Tara predicted, Rochelle wasn’t satisfied. She wanted the truth. Well, she could have that, too, said Bishop. With that, they all headed to Calvary, where the pews had been filled up with folks who’d received an email from Charity saying to come to church if they wanted the dirt about Bob.

‘JAMES GREENLEAF TOOK ADVANTAGE OF YOU’ | Off his meeting with the family whose home Eden Vale had stolen years earlier, Darius informed Grace that CBS was suddenly interested in his Bob exposé. At that very moment, the would-be senator was inside Calvary trying to spin the scandal into fake news. But Grace and Charity held him accountable for his past actions, informing the congregation that all of Eden Vale’s clients had been Black and challenging Bob to explain why Phil’s mother’s name had been on every loan. When Bob wouldn’t do so, Phil stepped up, recalling that in his mother’s final days, she had feared that God wouldn’t be able to forgive her for what she’d done. “I think I know now what she meant.” With that, he took back her engagement ring from Judee, who — classy till the bitter end — dropped it on the ground rather than hand it to him. Next up was Bishop, who entered surrounded by family and proceeded to call himself out for never having questioned the connection between Darryl’s death and his own good fortune. (If he hadn’t gotten the house, after all, he wouldn’t have been able to get the loan for Calvary.)

To his credit, Bishop was merciless with himself. He admitted that as the money started rolling in, he all but bathed in that original sin of his. He had it all, but “it wasn’t success,” he said, “it was a succubus, a demon of wealth and power seducing me.” (Side note: Where do I get one of those?) He’d been meant to show his flock what is possible with God… and instead only showed them what is inevitable without him. The congregation wouldn’t hear it, though. They supported their pastor, and as Charity sang “Amazing Grace,” the song seemed to drive out of the church Bob, Judee and Fernando. As Rochelle left, Grace stopped her. She knew that the troublemaker had only given AJ Noah’s number to mess with her — and she still wanted to thank her; it had turned out to be a great blessing. Hey, replied Rochelle, “God can use anybody, right, even a mean old sinner like me.” Stealing a moment with Charity, Phil, obviously angling for a second chance, apologized for his horrific behavior. “Phil, no one, not even the father of my son, has broken my heart the way that you have,” she replied. “I would never trust you with it again.” Way to go, Charity! Shut. That. Book.

greenleaf recap season 5 episode 7 bishop james dies‘I DO’ | As the hour careened toward its conclusion, Darius reported to Grace that the now-public Bob scandal had prompted him to step down from H&H. Clearly reunited, the couple kissed passionately — and would’ve gone back to his place, had Sophia not needed to talk to her mom. The topic? Sophia wanted to assure Gigi that she’d never again do anything as dumb as send a topless picture to a boy. What topless picture? Gigi asked. Oh, man, Zora got her cousin and good! Hilarious! She’d never blabbed! Meanwhile, Lady Mae gussied herself for a night of passion with Bishop. As she climbed into bed, she told him that she wanted to get married the following day. He didn’t jump for joy, though. He was… unresponsive. Had he had a stroke? He couldn’t speak but indicated that he wanted a pen. With it, he wrote, “I do.” Dunno about you, but I was crying right along with Lady Mae by that point. “I do, too, my love,” she said. She called an ambulance, but the way Bishop collapsed on the bed… it looked like it might already be too late! Ack! Your reaction to “The Seventh Day”? Dry your eyes, and hit the comments with your predictions about how the series will (sniffle) end.

EastEnders viewers outraged as Dennis Rickman dies in boat party tragedy: ‘I can’t cope’ https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-viewers-outraged-as-dennis-rickman-dies-in-boat-party-tragedy-i-cant-cope/ https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-viewers-outraged-as-dennis-rickman-dies-in-boat-party-tragedy-i-cant-cope/#respond Fri, 21 Feb 2020 22:09:35 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-viewers-outraged-as-dennis-rickman-dies-in-boat-party-tragedy-i-cant-cope/

Dennis (played by Bleu Landau) defied his mother Sharon Mitchell’s (Letitia Dean) orders by making his way onto the doomed voyage as EastEnders marked it’s 35th anniversary this week. Unfortunately, his wayward ways caught up with him and Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) was the one to teach him a lesson as he locked the teenager in the chamber of the vessel before disaster struck. Although the youngster made it off the flooded boat in this evening’s edition of the BBC soap, scenes towards the end of the episode showed he was the unlucky victim of the disaster. However, viewers weren’t too happy.

As the groundhog day theme played throughout the week came to an end, the events of the rescue mission played out in real time tonight.

With the vessel quickly filling with water, Ian made desperate attempts to free Dennis from his prison after losing the keys to the chamber.

Although he smashed a hole in the door, there was a struggle to get the troublesome character out and by the time they reached dry land, emergency services were waiting to attend to the pair.

Valiant efforts were made to save Sharon’s son’s life, but it was unsuccessful as he was revealed to be the victim of the anniversary disaster and viewers quickly took to Twitter to voice their outrage.

One posted on the social media platform: “Called it. What a shame. The potential future storylines Dennis had in the future and they’ve killed him off. #EastEnders #EastEnders35.”

Another added: “Oh s*** I did not have it down that Dennis would die. How tragic he’s so young.  #eastenders .”

Whilst a third commented: “It’s Denny! As much as he is a pain in the a*** he shouldn’t die like that!  #EastEnders.”

A fourth remarked: “They’ve killed off Denny. I can’t cope. His character had so much potential. Man, I’m emotional #Eastenders #Eastenders35.”

However, what Sharon doesn’t know is Ian had some involvement as to why her son was trapped on the boat when it began to sink into the Thames.

The coming weeks will see the repercussions of the teenager’s death play out, but it’s not been confirmed what exactly this will entail.

Teasing the future of the soap after Dennis demise, Head of Continuing Drama Kate Oates explained why he was the character who needed to be killed off.

Speaking with press, including Express.co.uk, the soap boss said: “It’s true of any soap or drama – you want consequence.”

“That is the main thing that comes out of Dennis’s death. It is where it goes, it’s the people who are left behind and the story that it generates. It is very well thought out.

“There is something almost Greek about it as it could be argued that it’s been set up for quite some time. We discussed it in depth and actually had a lot of arguments about it,” Kate explained.

Executive Producer Jon Sen added: “In retrospect you’ll see that there is only ever one candidate really who can generate the story we wanted to tell going forward for months and months.”

Will Sharon ever discover the true circumstances surrounding Dennis’ death?

EastEnders continues Monday at 8pm on BBC One.

The Jeremy Kyle Show CANCELLED: ITV suspend series after guest dies https://briefnews.eu/the-jeremy-kyle-show-cancelled-itv-suspend-series-after-guest-dies/ https://briefnews.eu/the-jeremy-kyle-show-cancelled-itv-suspend-series-after-guest-dies/#respond Mon, 13 May 2019 12:52:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-jeremy-kyle-show-cancelled-itv-suspend-series-after-guest-dies/

Today’s edition of The Jeremy Kyle Show was cancelled and immediately replaced by a filler programme after a heartbreaking tragedy.

ITV issued a statement revealing the series was pulled following the news a guest on the chat show died only one week after filming their episode.

The channel have now suspended the programme to “conduct a review” of the episode and what happened.

“Everyone at ITV and The Jeremy Kyle Show is shocked and saddened,” an ITV spokesperson said. “At the news of the death of a participant in the show a week after the recording of the episode they featured in.

“Our thoughts are with their family and friends.

“ITV will not screen the episode in which they featured,” the representative continued.

“Given the seriousness of this event, ITV has also decided to suspend both filming and broadcasting of The Jeremy Kyle Show with immediate effect.

“In order to give it time to conduct a review of this episode of the show.”

ITV decided to air an repeat episode of Dickinson’s Real Deal in Jeremy Kyle’s regular slot instead.

Viewers were left puzzled and frustrated when they realised the programme had been taken off-air today.

Flocking to Twitter to question the decision, one viewer shared: “Taken today of at work to watch #jeremykyleshow not the #realdeal @ITVJeremyKyle @ITV.”

“Sad day indeed. Thoughts with the family of the person that has died. Thinking of all our lovely #JeremyKyle staff,” another posted.

A third wondered: “I think by the sounds of it there is going to be an investigation into the episode in which the guest who died was to be featured on. Sounds to me as though the outcome of that will determine whether the show will continue. #jeremykyle.”

While a fourth wrote: “This is the end of #jeremykyle?! What will I watch now to make myself feel better?!”

“#jeremykyle suspended indefinitely?! Somethings gone down. Why wouldn’t they just replace the episode with a repeat. Sad for the person who’s lost their life though,” a fifth added.

Viewers continued to share their wishes for everyone involved, as one person said: “Sad news that a guest has passed away.

“#JeremyKyle is utter sh**e TV but somebody passing away, however it’s happened is always sad.”

It is not currently known who has died, but ITV will release further information in due course.

The Jeremy Kyle Show normally airs weekdays at 9.30am on ITV.

Emmerdale spoilers: Vanessa Woodfield DIES from stabbing as Tracy drops worrying clue? https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-vanessa-woodfield-dies-from-stabbing-as-tracy-drops-worrying-clue/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-vanessa-woodfield-dies-from-stabbing-as-tracy-drops-worrying-clue/#respond Thu, 10 Jan 2019 20:57:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-vanessa-woodfield-dies-from-stabbing-as-tracy-drops-worrying-clue/

Emmerdale treated viewers to two episodes of the soap tonight, but left them on a major cliffhanger: will Vanessa Woofdield (Michelle Hardwick) die from the stabbing?

Vanessa was rushed to hospital earlier in the evening after being stabbed by Lachlan White’s (Thomas Atkinson) father Donny.

It comes as the murderer, who was sentenced to life for his crimes, rang his dad in last night’s episode and asked him to “up the ante” with the threats against Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper).

Viewers saw Donny covering the back of the Woolpack in petrol when Vanessa, who was getting into her car with her son saw.

Determined to put a stop to his life-threatening crime, Vanessa jumped out of the car to confront the hooded thug.

But in a shock turn of events, Donny pulled a knife out and stabbed the vet in the lower abdomen, leaving her breathless and bleeding on the pavement.

After throwing a lighter at the petrol, the back of the pub lit up into a blaze of amber flames and Donny took Vanessa’s car and drove off, only to realise a few miles out of the village, her son was still sitting in the back.

Scenes then saw Vanessa struggle to ring Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), but eventually the dial rang through and she told her girlfriend she was injured.

Luckily, the paramedics arrived shortly after and whisked Vanessa off to hospital, whilst Charity went on the hunt for Johnny.

After successfully finding Johnny unharmed in the back of the car, the pub landlord arrived at the accident and emergency unit only to be told some grave news.

“How’s Vanessa?” she gasped, but her family just looked to one another.

“What?” Charity demanded and Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) was first to speak up: “She’s in a bad way, she took a turn for the worse on the way in.”

“Well where is she?” she continued, but as Paddy tried to convince her she wouldn’t be able to see her girlfriend, Charity bumped into Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) in another waiting room.

“What’s happening,” Charity urged and Tracey replied: “They think it’s internal bleeding.”

“They rushed her straight into surgery,” Frank Clayton (Michael Praed) added.

“Oh this is all my fault. Ok, I need to see her, I need to let her know Johnny is alright!” Charity begged.

“You do, but you can’t yet,” Tracey explained.

“But she’s going to be alright Tracy?” Charity questioned, “Please tell me she’s going to be alright?”

Tracy and Frank just looked to one another, unable to confirm whether or not Vanessa was going to pull through.

Have they been told by doctors Vanessa has a slim chance of survival and they are saving Charity from any worry until they know for definite whether or not Vanessa is going to live?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV.

Former Maple Leafs player, coach Dan Maloney dies at age 68 https://briefnews.eu/former-maple-leafs-player-coach-dan-maloney-dies-at-age-68/ https://briefnews.eu/former-maple-leafs-player-coach-dan-maloney-dies-at-age-68/#respond Wed, 21 Nov 2018 11:57:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/former-maple-leafs-player-coach-dan-maloney-dies-at-age-68/

Dan Maloney, a feared fighter who went on to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets, has died at age 68.

The NHL Alumni Association announced Maloney's death on its Twitter account. No cause of death was given.

Selected by the Blackhawks 14th overall in the 1970 NHL draft, Maloney went on to play 11 seasons in the NHL with Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit and Toronto. He was part of the trade that sent Marcel Dionne from the Red Wings to Los Angeles.

The Leafs broke up their successful line of Darryl Sittler, Lanny McDonald and Errol (Spud) Thompson to get Maloney, sending Thompson to Detroit.

Maloney had 192 goals and 259 assists over 737 games, scoring 20 or more goals three times in a season. A hard-nosed winger, he also piled up 1,489 penalty minutes with more than 90 fights during his NHL career, according to Hockeyfights.com.

In 1976, then with Detroit, he was acquitted in Toronto of charges of assaulting Maple Leafs defenceman Brian Glennie in a game in November 1975 at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Maloney went after Glennie after he had hit Brian Hextall of Detroit with what appeared to be a clean check near the Toronto blue line.

Maloney pounced on Glennie from behind, dropped him with a right-hand punch, then hit him several more times and repeatedly lifted and dropped Glennie, causing him to strike the ice.

Acquittal in Toronto

Glennie had to be helped from the ice and was taken to a hospital for observation with a concussion.

Maloney said he went after Glennie because he felt the Toronto defenceman had hit Hextall "extra hard," according to reports at the time. He also said he wasn't trying to hurt Glennie, but that Glennie kept falling and he kept trying to pick him up.

He was given a five-minute major penalty. The game turned nasty with 107 penalty minutes being called.

The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for almost nine hours before reaching their verdict. Maloney was the third NHL player to face charges for his actions on the ice.

After his acquittal, Maloney said he would continue "playing hockey the way I have always played it and the way I play it best. I'm just very glad to have this over with."

The judge in that case — Justice Patrick LeSage — would preside over Paul Bernardo's murder trial years later.

Maloney went into coaching after his playing career ended following the 1981-82 season, spending two seasons as an assistant coach with the Maple Leafs before being promoted to head coach.

He took over after head coach Mike Nykoluk was fired an hour before sitting down for a season-ending meal with his players.

Maloney coached the Leafs for the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons, then spent the following three seasons as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets before being fired 52 games into the 1988-89 season.

He also served as an assistant with the New York Rangers in 1992-93.

Born in Barrie, Ont., Maloney played junior hockey for the London Knights.
