Irina Bibilova was on a night shift on August 8 when the Georgian forces launched a sudden, large-scale attack on the breakaway Republic of South Ossetia. Its capital Tskhinval immediately came under indiscriminate shelling, with a local psychiatric ward becoming one of the targets.

As the first explosions were heard, Irina and other medics decided to gather the patients on the first floor of the hospital. But they quickly realized that it wasn’t safe there either and began evacuating the facility.

“Under the garage building [not far from the hospital] there was a trench to repair the cars. And they let us in and we stayed in that hole for 24 hours,” Irina told RT’s Ruptly video agency.

At some point, the nurses realized that one of their female patients had been left behind and they made a heroic decision to abandon their shelter to retrieve her. When they found the woman, the hospital was already burning after being hit by artillery and it was no easy task to persuade the mentally ill person to go with them.

Irina recalled that she and other nurses even tried to extinguish the flames, saying: “Despite the shelling, we managed to get three buckets of water there, but, of course, we couldn’t save our hospital.”

“But, thank God, we managed to save the patients,” Irina recalled, barely able to hold back her tears.

She gave her interview at the ruins of the hospital, which was never rebuilt after the short but deadly conflict that, according to various estimates, claimed between 400 and 1,600 lives, including several Russian peacekeepers. The aggression was only curbed by the intervention of the Russian military, after Moscow swiftly launched a ‘peace enforcing’ operation, within days shunting the Georgian forces deep back into their territory.

While all hell was breaking loose outside, inside their temporary shelter there was also “no food, water or medicine for the patients. They were very hungry,” Irina said. But fear was even greater as “they kept asking me every second: ‘Irina, you aren’t going to leave us, right? Don’t leave us. We will die.’ I told them: ‘I won’t leave you. We’ll be together. We’ll find rescue and we’ll live on.'”

“But they also understood that war is terrible. This is obvious even to the mentally affected people,” the nurse explained.

After some time, some of the patients, who were left without their usual medication started “acting erratically,” Irina said. “At times, we were forced to restrain them with our own hands, using force. There was no other way to calm the mentally affected.”

On August 9, the nurses decided to relocate to a safer and larger shelter, which turned out a very dangerous affair. “There was a gunfight. We were leaning to walls as we were getting out. I told them to follow me and by making small steps we went on. We were constantly on the lookout so that the patients wouldn’t get lost.”

They wanted to get to a nearby home in which, they knew, there was a big cellar. But it was already packed with all the people living in the area. So they had to quickly come up with a new sanctuary. “We took those 19 patients and ran. Walking was no option as shells flew above our heads. There was a constant sound of explosions.”

They were lucky to find a bunker where they’d spend another four days. During this time, Irina repeatedly “went outside and gathered plums in the nearby gardens. And I can’t imagine how she managed to find bread. She brought like 15 or 20 loaves,” another nurse, Svetlana, recalled. “She fed all of us.”

The medical staff and the patients were eventually evacuated from the war zone. The patients of the destroyed hospital are currently undergoing treatment in the Russian city of Vladikavkaz. Irina has, meanwhile, taken a new job and now works with kids in the main children’s hospital in Tskhinval.

Teen Wolf Star Offers a Warning for the Final Episodes: 'A Lot of People Die' https://briefnews.eu/teen-wolf-star-offers-a-warning-for-the-final-episodes-a-lot-of-people-die/ https://briefnews.eu/teen-wolf-star-offers-a-warning-for-the-final-episodes-a-lot-of-people-die/#respond Sat, 01 Jul 2017 22:59:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/teen-wolf-star-offers-a-warning-for-the-final-episodes-a-lot-of-people-die/

Teen Wolf has never been gun shy about murking your faves, and as the MTV drama heads into its final 10 episodes (exact premiere date TBD), the death toll will continue to rise in Beacon Hills.

At least that’s how Linden Ashby made it sound when TVLine caught up with him at the Saturn Awards earlier this week, where we managed to squeeze some Season 6B scoop out of Papa Stilinski.

“It’s a really cool season, and yes, a lot of people actually do die,” he told us. “It’s really about fear and people coming together in different camps, and it’s about intolerance. It’s about a lot of things that are pretty current right now. I think it’s going to be good.”

He added, “I get to do something that I haven’t done much of the entire season — I maybe get to fight a little bit. [Stilinski is] trying to keep things from spinning out of control and trying to keep people together. It’s not easy.”

As for how Stilinski will cope with Beacon Hills’ noticeable lack of Stiles Mieczyslaw, now enrolled in a pre-FBI program at George Washington University, Ashby assured us that all lines of communication between father and son will remain open.

“Well, you know, we call each other every day,” he said. “And we email and text, so it’s OK.”

And if your eyes well up a little when you think about this show coming to an end after six seasons, just imagine how the cast must have felt on the last day of filming back in March. Even better, here’s what Ashby recalled from the emotional event: “There was a lot of tears, a lot of people crying. Those are my friends, my family. It was sad.”

Show jumping must 'change or die' https://briefnews.eu/show-jumping-must-change-or-die/ https://briefnews.eu/show-jumping-must-change-or-die/#respond Sat, 17 Jun 2017 18:23:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/show-jumping-must-change-or-die/

On a sunny day at Spruce Meadows, in the shadow of the awesome, snow-capped mountains of southern Alberta, the knowledgeable and eclectic crowd gathers.

Their ranks are measured by the tens of thousands.

Horses of every size and shade vault powerfully at the command of riders who hail from Canada, the United States, Mexico, Lebanon, Russia, Brazil, Egypt, Japan, and the far-flung reaches of the planet.

The grandiose kaleidoscope that is befitting of an international spectacle of sport is breathtakingly unmistakable.

It is both awesome and impressive.

‘Change or die’

And yet, on a weekend where the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has resolved to embrace a new roster of athletic endeavours designed to attract the attention of a younger generation of fans, there are rumblings.

On the emerald–green turf under the big, blue sky there is the understanding that show jumping must keep itself grounded while making peace with the evolution of the Olympic program which now includes sports like surfing, 3-on-3 basketball, and skate boarding.

“It’s change or die,” said John Madden, who runs a stable which has produced some of the best equestrians in the world, both animal and human.

Included is his wife Elizabeth, (known as Beezie), who has won four medals — including two gold — over the course of her Olympic career. She is one of the top-ranked riders in the world and has been for at least a decade.

“If we were ever to lose the ability to have our sport at the Olympics, I don’t even want to think about the downturn it would cause for our entire industry,” John Madden said with a grimace.  “It would be complete devastation.”

Madden is also the first vice-president of the International Equestrian Federation [FEI], and has been instrumental in show jumping adopting a format change for the team event at the Olympics. The rule alteration calls for a smaller team — three riders instead of four — and every performance to count with no droppable score. Its proponents claim it eliminates what many critics saw as a cumbersome and complicated scoring system.

5 Things About Spruce Meadows1:44

“You tell me a sport that’s been successful where you’re confused about the score,” Madden said. “People have to be able to tune in and instantly know who is winning and who is losing. If you can’t count on that, how do you sell it?”

While Madden and other like-minded folks in the equestrian world have been able to get the format change adopted and thus secure show jumping’s place on the Olympic roster through the 2024 Games in either Paris or Los Angeles, many riders who favour tradition aren’t happy.

“All sports need to evolve to be in the marketplace,” said Ian Allison of Spruce Meadows, who is also the president of the Alliance of Jumping Organizers.

Engage a new fan base

“You can change to respect tradition but also to engage a new fan base. This allows for more universality. People don’t fully understand that there are 150 countries that have equestrian federations. This change means a greater opportunity for more flags to be represented and more show jumping teams to get to the Olympics.”

But there is more required than a rule change to ensure show jumping’s long-term survival on the Olympic stage.

IOC president Thomas Bach, through his Agenda 2020, has gone to great lengths to applaud the changing complexion of the Games schedule, which now includes a growing number of sports such as half-court basketball, sport climbing, freestyle BMX cycling and karate.  These are sports which are played in cities and easily accessible to a vast and youthful audience.

“Universality is essential,” Madden said. “We have to grow our sport in places like Asia. We have to find a way to move horses more freely around the world and expose more people to what these athletes can do.”

Karen Polle agrees.

She’s a 24-year-old rising star who holds dual American-Japanese citizenship and who chooses to compete for Japan because there’s a better chance she’ll make that team for the Tokyo Olympics, but also because there’s a way to spark change.

“Horse racing is huge in Japan, but show jumping is very minor,” Polle said. “But it is a beautiful sport and it’s unique. There’s potential because it’s exciting. The Olympics in Tokyo offers an opportunity to grow awareness.”

One card that all of the Olympic equestrian disciplines, which include show jumping, dressage and cross-country, have been able to play is the growing requirement that sport be seen as striving for gender equity. Because of the inclusion of mixed-gender relays in swimming, athletics and triathlon as well as the new sports, nearly 49 per cent of the athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Games will be female. That’s more than at any time in history.

Agenda 2020

“Gender equity is what Agenda 2020 is all about, and we are the champions of gender equity,” Madden said.

Indeed, equestrian sport, which has been at every edition of the Olympics since 1912 in Stockholm, is now the only sport in which men and women compete on the same field of play, against each other, and for the same gold medal. It’s been that way in show jumping since the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia.

“I’ve never thought that I’m a young woman and therefore I’m at a disadvantage,” Polle said. “In riding I have never been denied an opportunity because I’m a woman. Ideally that’s the way it should be for all of sport.”

While it’s impossible for men and women to compete directly against each other in every sport because of physiological reasons, it is to horse sport’s credit that it has long been a trailblazer in nurturing its champions regardless of gender. That applies to riders as well as horses, where stallions and mares have both won Olympic medals.

“We don’t care if it’s a man or a woman. It’s a competitor. It has always been that way with our sport and that’s what matters,” Madden said.

“The rules that we have adopted in show jumping are a victory for high quality, ethical sport. That’s what we’re supposed to be about. We’ve worked very hard to take Agenda 2020 very seriously, dissect it, and present ourselves well to the IOC.”

At the national show jumping tournament, the thrilling horse sport which Spruce Meadows has become famous for unfolds with no small measure of drama. There are crashes, dashes, graceful flights by majestic beasts, and a bevy of standing ovations.

Men and women have found their way to the winners’ circle, so too have athletes from a variety of nations and many different age groups. It’s a diversity of talent which performs in front of the appreciative grandstand.

It all feels so … Olympic.

“Competitors in this sport target the Olympics,” Madden said. “I know every little girl who gets into riding dreams of going to the Olympics and not of winning a lot of money.”

For Polle, keeping that dream alive means that show jumping must change with the times and allow the sport she loves to become more accessible to more people.

“If that’s the way we can keep our sport in the Olympics then there’s no question I’m for it,” she said. “For me it’s always been the Olympics. They are the biggest goal and the pinnacle of everything you work for.”

The 55-year-old played the lovable Curly Watts for over 20 years in the Coronation Street, but off camera his life was falling to pieces.

“I was known as a maintenance drinker, I maintained a regular feeling of being drunk throughout the day,” he told Susanna Reid, 46, and Ben Shephard, 42.

“A balance is hard to find. If I drank too much then it was visible, but if I did not drink I’d go into detox, so yeah, I always had a drink near.”

Kennedy confessed that he often thought his addiction was going to kill him, but when he realised that his life was under threat, he knew he had to take action.

“There were many times that I hit rock bottom but with this disease it’s all about denial,” he continued. “I’d say I was never going to do that again but three days later and suddenly the disease hits you and you want to drink again.

“I’d always find an excuse to go back drinking.”

Thankfully, Kennedy is now 18 years sober after finding a moment of “clarity”.

“I realised if I was going to carry on drinking I was going to die and from that moment on I decided to do something about it,” he said. “I was grieving drink because I had a long and successful relationship with it. But I knew I was going to die.”

Kennedy’s brave confession comes as statistics revealed that over 60 people are dying of alcohol related illnesses every day in the United Kingdom.
