BBC Breakfast viewers expressed their frustration at shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott appearing on the programme on Wednesday morning to discuss the new immigration bill. Some viewers claimed they turned off their TV set as soon as they noticed Ms Abbott on the screen, while others accused the Labour Party frontbencher of being unable to “answer a straight question.” Commenting on the BBC Breakfast interview on Twitter, one viewer said: “Turns on TV….DIANE ABBOTT…!!! Turns of TV……..”

Another said: “@BBCBreakfast… classic politician not answering a question #dianeabbott.”

One user echoed the feeling commenting on social media: “Watching breakfast tv interview with Diane Abbott she looks like reading a script, can’t answer a straight question.

“Needs to sort her self out before Corbyn. Corbyn never shut up saying his name so annoying.”

And one user accused Ms Abbott of “not having a clue” about the immigration bill: “Listening to Diane Abbott on the news this morning and that woman still just hasn’t got a clue.

“Give up love to just look like a fool.”

Diane Abbott questioned the reasoning behind the new immigration bill, which would require new migrants to be able to speak English and have a job offer upon arrival. The new bill would also put the salary threshold to remain at £26,600 per year.

Ms Abbott said: “I think the problem with the Government’s new immigration policy is that they are so anxious to look as if they are cracking down on immigration that they appear not to have thought through the effects that this policy would have on the economy as a whole.

“And what message it sends to migrants already living and working here. One of the problems is the salary threshold they are talking of.”

Speaking to Sky News, Ms Patel said: “First of all, we are ending free movement which means numbers will come down because we are ending free movement from the EU.

“With that, we have a structured framework now with points based on individual skills from citizens around the world.

“This is a global immigration system. It doesn’t discriminate in terms of where you’ve come from or which country you originate from but the important bit is about the skills you can bring to the UK.”

The Home Secretary also claimed the new system will help the Conservatives on their pledge to curb immigration after repeatedly failing to deliver on the former system.

She continued: “As a result, numbers will come down that is the purpose of having a system.

“The previous system still have free movement at the centre of it because we were members of the EU.

“The point is right now for the first time in over 40 years the British Government is able to set its own immigration policy and be in control of who comes into our country.

“With that control and having control measures effectively means we can keep migration down.”

Strictly Come Dancing 2018: Joe Sugg red-faced over Diane Buswell ‘Take your CLOTHES OFF' https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2018-joe-sugg-red-faced-over-diane-buswell-take-your-clothes-off/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2018-joe-sugg-red-faced-over-diane-buswell-take-your-clothes-off/#respond Sat, 03 Nov 2018 15:34:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2018-joe-sugg-red-faced-over-diane-buswell-take-your-clothes-off/

YouTube sensation Joe, 27, has been consistently growing in the favourites on Strictly Come Dancing this year, and his chemistry with Australian professional dance partner Dianne Buswell, 29, continues to sizzle.

Last night the pair appeared on popular BBC Two companion programme It Takes Two alongside newscaster Kate Silverton and her partner Aljaž Škorjanec for a catch up on their training this week.

Joe seemed in good spirits ahead of his Paso Doble routine tonight, which will be set to an unusual rendition of Bastille smash Pompeii.

Yet as the conversation turned to the contestant’s choice of outfits, things became unexpectedly saucy.

The guest presenter began: “Speaking of social media, I’ve noticed you’ve been going to the rehearsal room in a full suit.

“Is he turning into Anton [Du Beke]? Is it like Joe du Beke?”

Laughing, red-head Dianne declared: “Turning into Anton, yes. Joseph du Beke we call him now.”

The professional then began teasing the contestant for not shaking things up this week as they perform a more relaxed dance.

“Yeah but he got it wrong this week,” Dianne explained. “Because you know, when you do the ballroom, you can wear the suit.

“But paso… Paso Joe…” she trailed off, clearly unimpressed.

“Yeah not as much,” Joe then replied apologetically.

Seemingly trying to make a joke about Joe’s Strictly attire, Dianne suddenly ordered: “Take off them clothes.”

“Joseph du Beke, it’s got a nice ring to it,” the presenter quipped, completely missing the professional’s comments.

But the implication was clear to viewers, who watched as Joe’s head snapped to the camera in embarrassment.

The internet star pulled a face before shaking his head, swiftly trying to move the moment on.

Unfortunately, Dianne appeared to get the giggles over her awkward demand.

“No I shouldn’t have said that,” she told her co-star quietly.

Also tonight, Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton will be performing Street and Commercial dance to Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind part II, while Ashley Roberts and Pasha Kovalev will be doing the Foxtrot to a Natalie Cole song.

Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 7.05pm on BBC  One.

Lives remembered: Diane Leather, 1933 – 2018 https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-diane-leather-1933-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-diane-leather-1933-2018/#respond Sat, 22 Sep 2018 04:14:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lives-remembered-diane-leather-1933-2018/

Coming as it did just 23 days after Roger Bannister’s highly-publicised first ever sub four-minute mile, Leather’s own achievement did not draw the same attention.

While Bannister was whisked to London for TV appearances and rewarded with a knighthood, Leather went for a quiet celebratory drink with her coach.

Her feat was never ratified and speaking in 2014 she told Athletics Weekly: “I wasn’t surprised. It’s just the way it was.”

However her world record was made ever the more extraordinary as, unlike Bannister, Leather raced without pacemakers and led from beginning to end.

Diane Susan Leather was born in Streetly, Staffordshire. One of six children, she was the only daughter of James, a surgeon, and his wife Mabel.

As a child she enjoyed sport, playing netball and lacrosse at Harrogate Ladies’ College. Later, Leather enrolled at Birmingham College of Technology (now Aston University) to study chemistry.

Inspired by the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Leather joined her local athletics club, Birchfield Harriers.

She soon made her mark, as part of a team that broke the world record for the 3×880 yard relay in her first year at the club.

Her coach, Dorette Nelson Neal insisted she train for the mile – at the time not recognised as a suitable distance for women by international athletics governing bodies – and she set the women’s best time with 5 minutes and 2 seconds in 1953.

The following year she made history, running a mile in 4 minutes and 59 seconds. Over the course of her career she went on to take a further 15 seconds off her time, holding on to the world record for eight years. In 1959 she married Peter Charles, an engineer she met at university.

The next year she competed at the Olympics in Rome before retiring from competitive running at 27. In 2008 she was named second in a list of all-time great 1,500m runners by Athletics Weekly, behind Dame Kelly Holmes.

Her husband predeceased her in 2017. She is survived by sons Matthew, Hamish and Rufus and daughter Lindsey.

  • Diane Greene, Google’s cloud chief, was interviewed at the annual “Most Powerful Women Evening” event and covered a lot of ground.
  • She said she wouldn’t have minded buying Github and cautioned Microsoft from fiddling too much with the platform.
  • She also crowed that Google’s cloud tech was superior to Amazon’s.
  • She wasn’t questioned directly about the recent controversy within Google about the company’s military contracts, but she did offer that today’s tech leader has to be mindful of the wishes of employees.

Diane Greene, CEO for Google’s cloud businesses, spoke on a wide range of subjects regarding Google and the company’s rivals Wednesday night. She covered nearly everything other than the one topic that’s grabbed the most headlines of late.

At the annual “Most Powerful Women Evening” event hosted by Fortune magazine, Greene said that she “wouldn’t have minded buying” Github. When asked about Google’s competition with Amazon Web Services for cloud supremacy, she boasted that Google’s cloud possessed “better technology.”

What is Labour immigration policy? Piers Morgan frustrated as Diane Abbott fails to answer https://briefnews.eu/what-is-labour-immigration-policy-piers-morgan-frustrated-as-diane-abbott-fails-to-answer/ https://briefnews.eu/what-is-labour-immigration-policy-piers-morgan-frustrated-as-diane-abbott-fails-to-answer/#respond Mon, 30 Apr 2018 10:25:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-is-labour-immigration-policy-piers-morgan-frustrated-as-diane-abbott-fails-to-answer/

Piers Morgan interviewed the politician on Good Morning Britain following the news that Home Secretary Amber Rudd resigned amid the Windrush scandal.

Appearing via video link, Diane faced a series of questions from Morgan joined by Susanna Reid on immigration and illegal immigrants.

Piers probed Diane on Labour’s policy as she failed to give him a direct answer.

He exclaimed: “Well we spent the first half of the interview talking about that and I don’t think it’s unreasonable given the recent scandal to ask the shadow home secretary what your immigration policy is.

“You don’t want to answer for reasons that are your right of course, but I think viewers might be interested in knowing what your opinion is.”

However, Diane then became defensive as she said: ”No, no, no Piers.”

Piers retorted: “I’m not trying to trap you. I’m just trying to ask you a simple question. What do we do about illegal immigrants in this country? Do we let them stay?

“Boris Johnson suggested amnesty but you said no to amnesty so the only logical fallout for no amnesty is that we get them all out of the country isn’t it?”

Diane continued: “The logical fall out is in, it’s to try and work towards an immigration and nationality department which is more fair and efficient.”

Piers then replied: “You keep saying that but Diane I am honestly trying to work out what Labour’s view of illegal immigrants is.

“I don’t know why you’re finding it hard to answer that question.”

Susanna Reid chimed in on the debate as she questioned: “You’ve already said that there should be targets?”

Diane stated: “Yeah, of course there has to be targets but for specific areas of Home Affairs for instance deporting foreign national prisoners.”

However, Piers was evidently baffled by the encounter as he turned to his co-host once the interview had finished and declared: “Well, I’m none the wiser.”

Piers later took the debate to Twitter where he addressed the politician.

He wrote: “I wasn’t trying to trick you @HackneyAbbott. It was a simple question: would Labour let illegal immigrants stay in Britain or deport them? You criticised Rudd for her failure to ‘get basic facts right’ yet couldn’t give me a straight factual answer to this fundamental question.”

Those watching at home appeared to agree with Piers and described the moment as “car-crash TV”.

“Diane Abbott on #GMB was cringeworthy! Imagine her as Home Sec she doesn’t even know what day it is,” one exclaimed.

Another added: “Car crash interview, how can @HackneyAbbott be a representative or spokesperson? Perfectly reasonable question and no one is any wiser #GMB #noideahowshehasajobinpolitics.”

“@piersmorgan trying to get Diane Abbott to answer a straight forward question on #GMB is hilarious,” a third stated.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

‘Book Club’ Trailer: Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda Get Inspired By…’Fifty Shades of Grey’? https://briefnews.eu/book-club-trailer-diane-keaton-and-jane-fonda-get-inspired-byfifty-shades-of-grey/ https://briefnews.eu/book-club-trailer-diane-keaton-and-jane-fonda-get-inspired-byfifty-shades-of-grey/#respond Sun, 04 Mar 2018 10:51:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/book-club-trailer-diane-keaton-and-jane-fonda-get-inspired-byfifty-shades-of-grey/ book club trailer

Who knew that Fifty Shades of Grey would inspire more than just seething hot takes and a middling movie trilogy?

The erotic book series by E.L. James was the guilty pleasure for many a real-life book club, and now — astonishingly — it will serve as the springboard for a lusty mom rom-com starring Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen. The definitive actresses of their generation are starring in the aptly titled Book Club.

Watch the Book Club Trailer

Fonda, Keaton, Bergen, and Steenburgen play four friends who decide to spice up their dull book club with Fifty Shades of Grey.

“We started this club to stimulate our minds,” a resistant Bergen argues.

“From what I hear, this book is quite stimulating,” Fonda’s character winks back.

What follows is a cheeky montage of the four women blushingly reading the book, which inspires them to spice up their own sex lives. Steenburgen tries to introduce a little BDSM into her humdrum life with her husband (Craig T. Nelson). The single Bergen and Keaton try to get back into the dating game, eventually hooking up with Richard Dreyfuss and Andy Garcia, respectively. And Fonda strikes things up again with an old flame, played by none other than Don Johnson, the stately father of Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson. How much do you want to bet there will be at least one self-deprecating wink at this connection?

The trailer is a fun romp filled with shenanigans like Steenburgen spiking her husband’s drink with too much Viagra, and Keaton emerging from her closet in what she deems a “cute date outfit”: a baggy plaid coat that threatens to swallow her whole. Book Club plays like a sexy, saucy Golden Girls, and if you ignore the slightly embarrassing Fifty Shades tie-in, it looks like a pretty fun movie.

Here is the official synopsis for Book Club:

The lives of four 60-something women are altered after reading “50 Shades of Grey” in their book club.

Book Club is directed by Bill Holderman. It hits theaters on May 18, 2018.

‘House of Cards’ Final Season Adds Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear to the Cast https://briefnews.eu/house-of-cards-final-season-adds-diane-lane-and-greg-kinnear-to-the-cast/ https://briefnews.eu/house-of-cards-final-season-adds-diane-lane-and-greg-kinnear-to-the-cast/#respond Wed, 31 Jan 2018 18:53:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/house-of-cards-final-season-adds-diane-lane-and-greg-kinnear-to-the-cast/ House of Cards Final Season

Netflix’s political drama series House of Cards is being shaken up after the firing of Kevin Spacey following sexual misconduct allegations. The show is entering its final season, and without Spacey returning as Frank Underwood, the show will instead focus on Robin Wright as his wife Claire Underwood. However, some new faces will be joining the production as well.

Oscar nominees Diane Lane (Man of Steel) and Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) have been added to the cast of House of Cards. But who will they be playing?

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Lane and Kinnear are joining the cast as a pair of siblings. However, there are no more details on how they will impact the story or what they’ll be up to during the season. They’ll be joined by returning cast members Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott and Boris McGiver, though Neve Campbell will not be reprising her role.

The entire trajectory of House of Cards was reworked last year following Kevin Spacey’s firing from the show. There have been rumors that his character will be killed off, but no matter the fate of Frank Underwood, the show will now be led by Robin Wright. The writers spent their hiatus from production reconfiguring everything to revolve around her character. We’re not sure if Kinnear and Lane’s characters were always part of the equation or if they were additions that came with the retooling of the final season.

While the circumstances of Kevin Spacey’s removal from House of Cards were certainly a big deal, shifting the focus of the show to Robin Wright isn’t exactly a stretch. In the book that inspired the series, written by Michael Dobbs, Frank Underwood does indeed die. There’s no guarantee that will happen in this final season, but surely there will be some kind of narrative explanation for why the character is no longer around.

Fixing House of Cards was just one of the many changes Netflix had to make behind the scenes after the allegations against Spacey surfaced. The streaming service was also working on a Gore Vidal biopic with Spacey involved. The axing of that project as well as the cost of fixing the final episodes of House of Cards cost Netflix a total of $ 39 million.

It’s anybody’s guess as to how this final season of House of Cards will play out, or if viewers are even interested in seeing how the show continues following the accusations against Kevin Spacey. There’s no estimated release date for the final season of House of Cards just yet, but as soon as we hear anything, we’ll let you know.

‘In the Fade’ Trailer: Diane Kruger Goes on a Quest for Justice https://briefnews.eu/in-the-fade-trailer-diane-kruger-goes-on-a-quest-for-justice/ https://briefnews.eu/in-the-fade-trailer-diane-kruger-goes-on-a-quest-for-justice/#respond Sun, 05 Nov 2017 20:57:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/in-the-fade-trailer-diane-kruger-goes-on-a-quest-for-justice/ In the Fade trailer

Where is the line between justice and revenge? How do you move on after loved ones have been murdered? These questions are often reserved for movies starring grizzled tough guys, people like Liam Neeson or Arnold Schwarzenegger. It’s rare that we see a story that tackles those topics with a woman at the center, but that’s exactly what we have with In the Fade, a new thriller that stars Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds, National Treasure) as a woman whose family is killed. Watch the In the Fade trailer below.

In the Fade trailer

Kruger won the Best Actress award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and while I haven’t seen this movie yet, it certainly looks like she deserved it. The snippets of her performance in this trailer are incredible, and this seems like an opportunity for her to make a big splash in a film that grapples with some pretty serious subject matter. Speaking of that subject matter: In the Fade looks unfortunately timely, considering it deals with neo-Nazis and religious and racial prejudice.

Fatih Akin (New York I Love You) directs, and this movie is Germany’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming Academy Awards. Denis Moschitto, Johannes Krisch, Ulrich Tukur, Samia Chancrin, Numan Acar, and Rafael Santana co-star.

Out of nowhere, Katja’s life falls apart when her husband Nuri and little son Rocco are killed in a bomb attack. Her friends and family try to give her the support she needs, and Katja somehow manages to make it through the funeral. But the mind numbing search for the perpetrators and reasons behind the senseless killing complicate Katja’s painful mourning, opening wounds and doubts. Danilo, a lawyer and Nuri’s best friend, represents Katja in the eventual trial against the two suspects: a young couple from the neo-Nazi scene. The trial pushes Katja to the edge, but there’s simply no alternative for her: she wants justice.

In the Fade arrives in theaters on December 27, 2017.

Father of the Bride 3 script is WRITTEN but will Steve Martin and Diane Keaton return? https://briefnews.eu/father-of-the-bride-3-script-is-written-but-will-steve-martin-and-diane-keaton-return/ https://briefnews.eu/father-of-the-bride-3-script-is-written-but-will-steve-martin-and-diane-keaton-return/#respond Sat, 04 Nov 2017 17:31:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/father-of-the-bride-3-script-is-written-but-will-steve-martin-and-diane-keaton-return/

The 1991 comedy is on TV this afternoon and while it spawned 1995’s Father of the Bride Part II, movie fans have been wondering if the trilogy will ever be completed.

Now George Newbern, who played Bryan MacKenzie in the first two movies has spoken out.

Speaking with US Magazine, he said: “[Director] Charles Shyer wrote a script. I know there’s a script out there. And there’s talk.

“I don’t know how far it got but I’m sure most of the cast would be into it if the script was right. So maybe that’s just a question of that happening.”

The actor continued: “I have heard some [concepts] and they are pretty far out there. From what I heard it was pretty good and different and newsworthy.

“I think Bryan MacKenzie would probably be a grandfather now. They had a kid so he’s probably got a grandkid at this point, I think. Or at least close to it.

“Or his daughter would be getting married. He’s probably invested in a startup in the Silicon Valley because they are on the West Coast. And they probably live up in the Bay area.

“They got four kids. They need to shoot a third one. We need to do a third one. That would be great.”

Reports suggested the third film would feature the parents, played by Martin and Keaton, planning yet another wedding – but this time, for their gay son.

Grown-up child star Kieran Culkin played the couple’s young son in the original Father of the Bride film and the 1995 sequel, Father of the Bride Part II.
