Outlander‘s Claire is known for speaking her mind. So it’s not that surprising that the woman who created her did that — and then some — after this week’s episode. Author Diana Gabaldon, who penned the series of novels on which the Starz series is based, tweeted her harsh review of part of Episode 6, “Better to Marry Than Burn,” Sunday afternoon after the installment began streaming on the Starz app. (The channel airs the show Sundays at 8/7c.) Gabaldon tweeted that the episode was available, and a viewer replied that the chemistry between lead actors Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan seemed off near the end of the hour, during a sex scene in a stable. (Editor’s note: I thought the same and mentioned it in my recap, which you can read here.) Gabaldon then replied to the viewer with her take on why the moment didn’t work. “Bad dialogue, bad direction, bad lighting, awkward set,” she posted, making sure to defend Heughan and Balfe. “Actors did their level best with what they were given to work with.” In a subsequent tweet, Gabaldon clarified that she was not against the entire hour, just that specific exchange between Mr. and Mrs. Fraser. “Would y’all pay attention?,” she wrote. “I was referring explicitly to one 45-second scene, NOT the episode.” Later, she added that “Most of it was pretty good.” Gabaldon is a consultant on the Starz series, and she wrote the current season’s upcoming Episode 11.

In parliament the Labour leader asked whether the prime minister had provided samples of the nerve agent Novichok as requested by Russia over allegations it was used in the “attack”. Traces were reportedly found during the investigation into the unexplained poisoning.
Corbyn said there must be “robust dialogue” with Russia, rather than a slashing of all ties. He raised a number of questions, including asking what information there is about where the nerve agent came from. There were cries of “shame” from some MPs, unhappy at his decision to question the evidence.
“The attack in Salisbury was an appalling act of violence,” Corbyn said. “Nerve agents are abominable. Our response as a country must be guided by the rule of law, support for international agreements and human rights. It is essential the government works with the UN.”
Corbyn also took aim at Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who was jeering during his response to the prime minister’s statement. He said: “I didn’t understand a word the foreign secretary said but his behavior demeans his office. It is in moments such as these governments realize the importance of strong diplomacy.
“The measures we take have to be effective not just for long-term security but to secure a world free of chemical weapons.”
A furious May hit back in the political ping pong, claiming she expected her actions to be supported across parties. She said: “I am only sorry the consensus does not go as far as the right honorable gentleman. He could have taken the opportunity to condemn to culpability of the Russian state.”
The government should work with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Corbyn said. He also asked what is being done through the OPCW if the government still believes this material could have been obtained due to Russian government negligence.
“It is a matter of huge regret that diplomatic capacity has been cut,” he said, after the expulsion of Russian diplomats was announced.
His comments came after Theresa May fired warning shots to Russia insisting the country has shown “complete disdain” for Downing Street by refusing to meet a response deadline.
The PM had given the government until yesterday to react to claims it used the nerve agent Novichok to try and murder ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, last week.
May announced a new range of sanctions including the expulsion of 23 diplomats and further checks on Russian private planes entering the UK. This represents the biggest expulsion of what the government has described as “undeclared agents of Russia” in 30 years.
No royal family member or politician will attend the football World Cup in Russia, May told the Commons, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will have his invitation to visit the country withdrawn. May said: “Either this was a direct act by the Russian state against our country or the Russian government lost control of a military-grade nerve agent.
“They have provided no credible explanation. No explanation as to how this came to be used in the UK. The Russian state was culpable for the attempted murder of Mr Skripal and his daughter. This represents unlawful use of force by the Russian state against the UK.”

“A US-Russia Strategic Dialogue is more urgent following President Putin’s public address on March 1st when he referred to several new nuclear weapons Russia is reportedly developing, including a cruise missile and a nuclear underwater drone,” a letter signed by US Senators Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) reads.
The letter, addressed to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, was published on Wednesday. The senators stressed that while the countries have many “significant” disagreements, including alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections and the “annexation” of Crimea, Moscow and Washington need to come to the negotiation table.
“Due to these policy rifts, not in spite of them… the United States should urgently engage with Russia to avoid miscalculation and reduce the likelihood of conflict.”

The Syrian National Dialogue Congress starts in the Russian resort city of Sochi on Monday. The event is expected to last for two days, with the main negotiations taking place on Tuesday.
The Congress is sponsored by Russia, Turkey and Iran. The leaders of the three countries agreed to hold the all-Syrian Congress back in November. The main goal of the meeting is to gather “delegates from various political parties, internal and external opposition, ethnic and confessional groups at the negotiating table,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the time.
Over 1,500 delegates, representing various groups in Syrian society, have been invited to participate in the talks, expected to pave the way for a peaceful future for the war-torn country. The Congress delegates are expected to begin work on a new constitution, and to discuss other aspects of reconciliation in Syria.

It will be a landmark event, as it is the first to give voice to so many different groups from Syrian society, the government and the opposition. While instant reconciliation is unlikely, the Congress will be a large step into the right direction, Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
“The work that is going on is extremely complex and thorny. But holding the congress itself is a significant step towards a political solution,” Peskov stated. “One should not expect that the political reconciliation will be achieved in Sochi.”
The Congress in Sochi is not designed to replace, but rather to boost the Syrian peace process, namely the UN-sponsored Geneva talks, which have been stalling for years, largely due to the unwillingness of some Syrian opposition representatives to engage in talks with the country’s government without unrealistic preconditions.
“We believe … that the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi will be able to create conditions for staging fruitful Geneva talks, taking into considerations that the part of the Syrian opposition that constantly makes preconditions, including for regime change, will be talked into sense by those who control it,” Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier in January.
The Saudi Arabia-based High Negotiations Committee (HNC), an umbrella body created back in 2016 to represent some of the Syrian rebel groups at the Geneva talks, has decided, however, to boycott the Congress just days before its launch. The group claimed it was supporting the “credible political transition” in the Geneva format instead.
The HNC, however, has not demonstrated the qualities of unity in boycotting the Sochi congress, as part of the group, namely the so-called Moscow and Cairo opposition platforms, voted to attend the event and are expected to take part.
The decision to boycott was allegedly supported by 24 members of HNC, while 26 votes were needed for a decisive result, the leader of the Moscow platform, Qadri Jamil, told TASS on Saturday. The participation of some HNC members is therefore possible and would not violate the decision, according to Jamil, although they will not represent the group as a whole.
While the decision of the HNC is unlikely to harm the Congress, it definitely harmed the opposition body itself, which will now miss the chance to be heard at a large international meeting, a source in Russia’s Foreign Ministry told TASS on Saturday.
“No, it won’t affect [the Congress]. We’ve invited everyone eager to participate, who doesn’t want, does not participate. The Congress will be held without them, unfortunately, and that’s all,” the diplomatic source said.
Despite the claims of parts of the Syrian opposition that the Sochi Congress would somehow jeopardize the international peace process, it was embraced by the main sponsor of the Geneva talks – the UN. The Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, will take part in the Congress after accepting Moscow’s invitation days before the event.
“The Secretary-General is confident that the Congress in Sochi will be an important contribution to a revived intra-Syrian talks process under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva, based on the full implementation of the Geneva Communiqué (2012) and Security Council resolution 2254 (2015),” the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement on Friday.

The third Monday of every January has long been crowned ‘Blue Monday’ – the saddest day of the year and while the science behind the unflattering title has been scoffed at by experts, some say the day has unintended value.
]]>Russian Defense Ministry representatives have arrived in the North Korean capital. It is the second visit by Russian officials in two weeks, and comes as Washington claims it is ready for direct talks with Pyongyang, while still staging war games in the turbulent region.
The delegation is headed by Deputy Director of the Russian National Defense Command Center Viktor Kalganov, and has been on assignment in North Korea since Tuesday. The officials are to remain in Pyongyang for the rest of the week.
There has been no word on their mission from the Russian military. However, almost simultaneously with news of the visit, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow is using “any opportunity for direct communication” and will continue to do so, including with the help of the Defense Ministry. “North Korea is our neighbor, we must develop relations with this country,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said during a briefing on Wednesday. “Political dialogue is extremely important,” he added.
The Russian military have traveled to Pyongyang to “activate” a settlement of the crisis in the region, Deputy Head of the Defense Ministry’s Public Council Aleksandr Kanshin told Interfax. “The aim of the military, political and diplomatic efforts is clear: all sides should be put back at negotiations table, to put away provocative and threatening military rhetoric and demonstration of force,” the official said. He noted that such missions are part of a road map proposed by Moscow and Beijing, which seeks a solution to the nuclear tensions through dialogue.
Moscow has repeatedly said that only diplomatic efforts can solve the crisis. Following a recent visit to North Korea by Russian lawmakers, the delegation said that Pyongyang is ready for talks if it is recognized a nuclear power. North Korea can sit at a negotiating table with the US with the participation of Russia as a third party, it proposed.

While the Russian delegation is working in Pyongyang, Washington has made a U-turn in its hardline stance towards the North. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that the US is ready for talks with no preconditions. Russia, which has always advocated a diplomatic approach, welcomed the new tone of the American rhetoric, with Ryabkov saying that previously the US treated any direct contacts with Pyongyang as “abnormal.”
At the same time, the US has not abandoned another pillar of its policy in the region, which is the continuation of a series of military drills near the Korean Peninsula. The recent maneuvers are considered to be one of the largest military drills to date aimed at North Korea.
“Unfortunately, the US carry on with their non-constructive line aimed at military build-up in North-Eastern Asia,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday. She reiterated that Moscow calls on all sides to refrain from moves that only escalate the crisis.

It’s a common part of the movie-making process that actors occasionally have to return after filming wraps to re-record some lines of dialogue, or dub in some new ones.
But after Fisher died in December last year, director Rian Johnson has revealed the tricky process the sound team went through to finish Fisher’s lines.
“We had to do a lot of sound work and that was kind of tough, but we managed,” he told Rolling Stone.
“We have a great sound team and we managed to pull her dialogue out and find little snippets from here and there and make it work.
“You do what you’ve gotta do.”
Last night Johnson paid tribute to Fisher at the Episode 8 premiere in LA, as it was revealed that the movie is dedicated to her.
According to USA Today, he said: “I do want to acknowledge and dedicate tonight to Carrie.
“I know she’s up there right now flipping me the bird, saying, ‘Damn it Rian, how dare you bring the mood down and make this night a solemn tribute.’
“So let’s have a blast together for Carrie.”
Critics who saw the blockbuster in Los Angeles last night have been raving about it on social media overnight, with one saying he hasn’t stopped “shaking”.
Star Wars: Episode 8 – The Last Jedi is out on Thursday in the UK.
“We know that, above all, North Korea wants to talk to the US about its own security assurances,” he said in Vienna following his meeting with Tillerson. “Russia is ready to take part in facilitating such talks.” Lavrov and Tillerson spoke on the sidelines of an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) meeting.
Lavrov reiterated that all parties involved in the Korean crisis should “break the vicious cycle of confrontation, reckless schemes and sanctions” and engage in meaningful dialogue instead. He also pointed to American military exercises near the Korean Peninsula and Washington’s aggressive rhetoric, which he said only leads to a further escalation of tensions. This is “unacceptable,” Lavrov made clear.
Earlier Thursday, the head of Russia’s Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Konsantin Kosachev, met with North Korea’s Ambassador to Moscow to discuss the situation on the peninsula. Following his exchange with Kim Young Jae, Kosachev said Pyongyang has absolutely no interest in ratcheting tensions, not to mention starting a full-blown military conflict. But, Kim added, Pyongyang “does not fear war” either.
Kosachev said a viable way to resolve the crisis is an all-in dialogue between relevant parties and joint efforts aimed at lowering tensions. “We are absolutely not interested in the escalation of tensions, in any military action,” Kosachev told the Interfax news agency following the meeting. Russia “will do everything it can to prevent this escalation,” he added.
Both Lavrov and Kosachev once again referred to the so-called “double freeze” initiative put forward by Russia and China soon after tensions heightened in early September. The plan envisages the US and its allies stop all major military exercises in the region in exchange for Pyongyang suspending its nuclear and ballistic missile program. The initiative, however, has been spurned by Washington, with the US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, denouncing it as “insulting.”
On Wednesday, the North Korean foreign ministry said US military drills near the Korean Peninsula as well as Washington’s belligerent rhetoric make an outbreak of war in the region inevitable. “The remaining question now is, when will the war break out,” the ministry’s spokesperson told the North Korean state news agency KCNA Wednesday.
On Monday, the US launched massive air drills together with South Korea. The five-day exercises, scheduled to last until December 8, involve a total of 12,000 personnel and over 230 military aircraft. Pointedly, the maneuvers particularly simulate attacks on Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile installations while claiming it to be “defensive.”
In late November, North Korea conducted yet another missile test, claiming it had successfully launched a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile capable of striking the US mainland.

It may be the seventh TV spot for Star Wars The Last Jedi, but this one isn’t so much a rehash of the main trailer from last month, with lots more new dialogue and shots.
Luke is heard asking Rey, “You’ve seen this place?”, to which she replies: “Only in dreams.”
The Jedi Master then says what will probably be his first line in the movie: “Who are you?”
Fans are also treated to a clip of Rey and Luke together during her training on Ahch-To.
Luke asks Rey what she sees, since clearly The Force has awoken in her, to which she replies: “Light. Darkness.”
It seems that not only Luke is conflicted with both sides of the Force, but so is Rey.
After some new footage of Kylo Ren, Rey is seen reassuring Luke that she will be a faithful Padawan to him.
She says: “Kylo failed you, I will not.”
The trailer ends with Snoke telling Rey to fulfill her destiny as seen previously, but this time it’s an extended shot of him closing his eyes.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will be released in UK cinemas on December 14, 2017.
