What it won’t show are five words the young superstar uttered in the locker room afterward, his hair still damp from the shower, his face still rouged from the exertion of an extraordinarily entertaining game his team had just lost 2-1 in overtime.

“We’ve just got to relax,” he said.

It seems a simple thing, but the phrase cuts directly to the heart of the matter.

With those five words, McDavid put a stethoscope to the recurring malady that has plagued the Edmonton Oilers for the past seven games: an offence with a barely perceptible pulse.

The Oilers will return home from this three-game road trip with one win, one regulation-time loss and one overtime loss.

When they left Edmonton they were walking wounded, with frail goaltending, a shaky defence and a sputtering offence.

Away from home, they cured some of those ills.

As Meatloaf once said, two out of three ain’t bad.

While away from home, goaltender Cam Talbot found his game, and the defence suddenly remembered how to play in front of him.

Over three games in Chicago, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, they surrendered a measly five goals.

But the offence scored only four. Even students of the “New Math” know that ain’t good.

Four goals in three games table scraps. They’ve been surviving, barely, on the same starvation diet for seven games now.

So this condition, for the moment, appears to have become chronic.

The Oilers have fired 302 shots on goal in eight games this season. They’ve scored 15 times.

A team shooting percentage of 4.9 per cent is half what it should be.

Last season, that percentage was 9.54.

Talbot brilliant in Oilers net

When pucks aren’t going in, several things happen. Players are reluctant to shoot when they should. They try to make perfect shots and miss by inches. They hesitate. They second-guess.

Confident players just rip it at the net. Goals build confidence, which leads to more goals. And so on.

You get the sense that if these guys just keep shooting, if they “relax” and trust their skills, pucks will start going in.

But enough of that – time to talk about what went right.

For starters, Talbot played brilliantly, again, in Pittsburgh.

Over a span of more than two periods, he stopped every shot he saw, and some he didn’t. He was finally beaten on a wrist shot by Ian Cole that threaded its way through a congregation gathered in front of the net.

But Matt Murray played copycat at the other end of the rink, and matched him save for save — until McDavid beat him with a wicked wrist shot, high glove-side, to tie the score with three minutes left in the third period.

The Penguins won the game on a Phil Kessel goal, 42 seconds into overtime.

Fans on Twitter question coach’s decision

The inquisition began while the red light behind Talbot was still flashing.

Fans on Twitter and radio call-in shows wanted to know why the less-than-fleet-footed Milan Lucic was on the ice in 3-3 overtime.

A lumbering power forward, whose strength is best displayed during combat along the boards and in the corners, Lucic was part of the second Oilers trio over the boards in the extra period. He and linemate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins broke in on the Penguins net but missed on their chance, which created, as it often does, an odd-man rush the other way.

As Evgeni Malkin lugged the puck into the Oilers’ zone, Lucic and Nugent-Hopkins skated hard to get back. They weren’t fast enough. Malkin slipped a pass across to Kessel, who fired the winner home.

No one can fault the Oilers’ effort on Tuesday night, or in the two previous road games.

They continue to generate scads of scoring chances.

Mark Letestu had the best one Tuesday evening, and missed a goal by precisely 3.5 inches. After a perfect pass, he faced a gaping net. But a desperate Murray reached out with his stick, 3.5 inches wide at the paddle, and guess what the puck hit?

That pucks goes in 99 out of 100 times.

Oilers coach Todd McLellan said he liked his team’s overall effort. He was pleased his players appear to have cleaned up the defensive lapses that plagued the team at home last week against Winnipeg and Carolina. The next step, he said, will be to find some anti-venom for a snakebitten offence.

Asked about his team’s scoring woes, he offered his own expert diagnosis.

“It’s almost like we’re squeezing it so tight that we ether pause or we shoot it a little too quick,” he said.

Which was exactly what his captain said, in five well-chosen words.

Great minds think alike.

The Oilers return home to play the Dallas Stars on Thursday and the Washington Capitals on Saturday — both teams that can score goals in bunches.

CBS’ ill-fated fall launch, Pure Genius, was “caught between two different shows,” and that in part led to its truncated freshman season and likely cancellation, says series star Augustus Prew.

Pure Genius followed James Bell, a tech whiz determined to use his vast fortune and high-tech expertise to solve medical mysteries. It premiered last October to 6.2 million total viewers and an anemic 1.0 demo rating, and at the time it was denied a Back 9 order it had slipped below the average that got Elementary bumped from Thursday to Sunday. (Elementary’s immediate successor, Rush Hour, averaged a 0.9 before getting banished to a Saturday burn-off.) By the time of its 13th episode/season finale, Pure Genius had slipped to 5.2 mil/0.7.

“That was my first stab at having a show with me being the sort of lead role in it [opposite Dermot Mulroney], and the experience was amazing,” Prew shared with TVLine during an interview about his role on Fox’s Prison Break, which he filmed last spring before diving into Pure Genius.

“But if I’m being honest, I think we got caught between two different shows,” the English actor continued, offering his diagnosis of the medical drama’s ills. “I think CBS wanted something a little more procedural, and [executive producer] Jason [Katims, of Friday Night Lights/Parenthood fame] wanted something a little more character-driven.”

Prew also speculates that the show wasn’t allowed enough time to smooth his socially inept genius’ rough edges. “I think we fell into the trap of potentially James was not likeable enough, initially — but there was a huge payoff coming down the line, when James learns and becomes a better person,” said his portrayer. “That was the journey we never got to see, unfortunately.”

But mostly, while on air, the series suffered because of its split personality. “CBS and Jason had slightly different visions of what they wanted the show to be, and as a consequence we weren’t enough of either, if that make sense,” Prew said. “If it’s going to be a procedural, we should have done a procedural and taken out of the character development. And if it was going to be about these characters and their lives and coming to terms with their own mortality — which is what I wanted the show to be about — we should have pushed that further.”

Alas, in committing to neither extreme, Prew said, “It lost its reason to be. I think that’s where we fell down, if I’m looking at it under a new light.”

One of the machines – a 3 Tesla Prisma machine, due to be operational in May, is being described as a ‘world first’ by experts and they could process around 6000 patients per year.

The already-powerful magnet will be turbo-charged with additional software from manufacturer Siemens in order to boost its processing power.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) harnesses the power of magnetic fields to obtain high quality images of the body, particularly soft tissues and vital organs like the heart and brain.

Using this technology, the team of specialist radiographers, cardiologists and radiologists on site will be able to produce high-quality scans.

This means clinicians will have access to the most detailed scans possible, helping them to diagnose disease earlier and potentially save countless lives.

The technology has been paid for by Queen Square Enterprises (QSE), owned by the charitable arm of the University College London Hospitals (UCLH) trust, and will benefit both NHS and private patients.

Dr James Moon, Professor of Cardiology at University College London and also Clinical Director of Imaging at the Barts Heart Centre, described the scanners as a world first.

He said: “In London we’re centralising facilities so people get the best care they can for the disease they have, be it neurological, cardiac or cancer.

Around three in five people under 50 who are diagnosed with bowel cancer do not have their symptoms recognised until they reach later stages of the disease – hampering their chances of survival.

Charity Bowel Cancer UK, with the University of Exeter, Durham University and University Hospital of North Tees, launched a risk assessment tool to help GPs identify the symptoms of serious bowel conditions like bowel cancer, or less serious but more common conditions like IBS, for patients under 50.

The charity said the tool is the first of its kind and could help speed up diagnosis among young people who frequently face life-threatening delays to diagnosis.

The assessment tool calculates the risk of the patient’s bowel symptoms allowing the GP to decide whether they need further tests.

Across the UK, 2,500 under-50s are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year, a 45 per cent increase since 2004

And 13,000 people are diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, many of whom are under 50.

Bowel Cancer UK said symptoms of these conditions are common and account for one in 12 GP appointments.

But it added family doctors can face difficulties in deciding which patients should be referred for further tests because many symptoms are not caused by cancer.

As a consequence, young people often face a delay in their diagnosis, reducing their chance of survival significantly.

The new tool, details of which have been published in the British Journal of General Practice, predicts a patients risk.

Depending on their risk level, GPs can then choose which course of action to take – whether patients need an urgent colonoscopy, another test to show whether there is inflammation in the bowel or whether no tests are needed.

Deborah Alsina, the chief executive of Bowel Cancer UK, says: “As the numbers of under 50s affected by bowel cancer and bowel disease continues to rise, research is fundamental in finding better ways to diagnose people early when treatment is likely to be more successful.

“Delayed diagnosis is all too common for young patients with both bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.

“Therefore, finding quicker, more effective ways to identify and diagnose these patients earlier is crucial.

“Our research shows that one in five young patients have to visit their GP five times or more before they get their diagnosis and this is simply not acceptable.

“This important research has the potential to help GPs to decide which of their young patients need a referral for further tests and which have less serious bowel conditions.

“However, this is just the start. The next step is to ensure that all GPs across the UK have access to this potentially life-saving tool as part of their day-to-day practice”

Lead researcher Willie Hamilton, professor of primary care diagnostics at the University of Exeter Medical School, said: “The risk assessment tool should be used as a reminder to GPs to consider the likelihood of an individual patient having a serious bowel condition given the symptom or combination of symptoms they present with.

“The tool does not replace clinical judgment but provides more information to base a referral decision.”
