SEATTLE—Last week’s crowded, fun-filled PAX West 2022 expo was very different from the ghost town of its 2021 edition, which meant Ars Technica got to spend time with some of our favorite video game creators. You may have already seen our PAX West chat with the co-creators of the Monkey Island series, where we got a peek at Return to Monkey Island‘s new puzzles, jokes, and delectable animations. But that wasn’t the only interview we conducted.

Below are two additional interviews based on highlights from our time at the four-day expo. Each comes from indie studios whose previous games have impressed: Yacht Club Games (Shovel Knight) and Squanch Games (Trover Saves the Universe). The interviews were conducted after I played each studio’s new game, and I’ll be back tomorrow to report on other gameplay highlights from the expo.

Mina the Hollower
(Release date TBD, platforms TBD | Official site)

My favorite discovery at PAX West 2022 wasn’t entirely surprising, as it hit many of my personal gameplay biases: a Game Boy Color aesthetic; a top-down adventure that recalls the three Game Boy-exclusive Legend of Zelda games; and the development chops of a studio like Yacht Club Games, which is best known as the creator of the incredible platformer Shovel Knight.

Devs Review: FX’s Sci-Fi Thriller Gets Stuck Between ‘Whoa’ and ‘WTF?’ https://briefnews.eu/devs-review-fxs-sci-fi-thriller-gets-stuck-between-whoa-and-wtf/ https://briefnews.eu/devs-review-fxs-sci-fi-thriller-gets-stuck-between-whoa-and-wtf/#respond Tue, 18 Feb 2020 17:48:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/devs-review-fxs-sci-fi-thriller-gets-stuck-between-whoa-and-wtf/ I wanted to love Devs. I really did. I’m a huge fan of Alex Garland, the Ex Machina and Annihilation filmmaker who writes and directs all eight episodes of the FX sci-fi thriller (debuting Thursday, March 5 exclusively on Hulu), and I couldn’t wait to see what mind-blowing magic he might conjure up on his own TV series. Based on the three advance episodes I’ve seen, Garland’s singular vision is in full effect — Devs contains some of the most stunning imagery I’ve seen on TV in recent years — but unfortunately, the story gets stuck at the starting gate, bogged down by dense tech jargon and a frustratingly cryptic conspiracy plot.

To be fair, Ex Machina and Annihilation were plenty dense and cryptic, too, but both films rewarded our patience with gorgeous visuals and thought-provoking insights about the intersection of humanity and technology. Devs has the visuals down pat, to be sure, but the insight is lacking. It has Garland’s signature chilly and cerebral tone, but the pacing is sluggish. (It feels at times like a two-hour movie idea that got stretched out to fill eight hours.) And while the characters in Garland’s films helped us connect to the brainy material on a human level, Devs‘ characters just aren’t sharply drawn enough to make us care.

Devs FX Sonoya Mizuno LilyThe story centers on lovers Lily (Garland veteran Sonoya Mizuno) and Sergei (Gypsy‘s Karl Glusman), who both work for Amaya, a cutting-edge tech company run by the enigmatic Forest (Parks and Rec‘s Nick Offerman). Sergei gets recruited to join Amaya’s Devs team, where they’re working on a top-secret project known as “The Machine” that might have massive implications for society… but Sergei never comes home from his first day at Devs. Lily is told he took his own life, and is even shown security camera footage to prove it, but she doesn’t believe it, and her search for the truth reveals a nasty darkness behind Amaya’s gleaming facade.

Devs is, as one character puts it, “transcendently weird,” with enough highbrow talk about quantum computing, neuron mapping and multiverses to make your head spin. The technology on display is certainly impressive: “The Machine” does seem to be a true game-changer of unfathomable power and scope. (I’m not allowed to reveal what it actually does — which is fine, because I don’t completely understand it.) It all feels a bit like a dream, or a hallucinogenic trip, and Garland is a true master at creating a sense of wonder and awe with his jaw-dropping visual style. (Amaya’s headquarters is a tech nerd’s paradise, nestled deep in a majestic redwood forest, with sleek buildings standing alongside centuries-old trees and a towering statue of a little girl looming over all of it.) It’s almost enough just to drink in Devs‘ visual grandeur and let its far-out ideas bounce around your brain. Almost.

But the conspiracy subplot acts like an anchor, stubbornly dragging Devs‘ soaring ambitions back down to earth. Lily’s mission to find out what really happened to Sergei is hampered by heavy exposition, shadowy characters and plot twists we’ve seen before on Homeland, or 24, or a hundred other TV thrillers. Mizuno does what she can, but I’d rather spend more time at Amaya and learn more about its incredible innovations than follow another desperate character as she tumbles down another paranoid rabbit hole of puzzle-piece clues. It’s disappointing to see a series with such vast potential get shoved into a pre-fabricated TV drama template.

Devs FX Nick Offerman ForestOfferman does get a chance here to show us he’s more than just Ron Swanson: He’s quite good as Forest, the wild-haired and quietly menacing genius behind Amaya. His naturally stoic demeanor fits the tech guru well, and he adds a flash of malice to Forest’s steady stare. It’s otherwise tough to latch onto anything in Devs, though. There’s a fine line between “intriguingly mysterious” and “just plain confusing,” and Devs too often ends up on the wrong side of that line. I “ooh”ed and “ahh”ed a lot while marveling at Garland’s visual flourishes — but watching it ends up being less of a treat and more of a chore.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: FX’s Devs offers cool technology and stunning visuals, but the plot is disappointingly cryptic and confusing.

‘Devs’: Here’s What Alex Garland’s FX TV Series is About https://briefnews.eu/devs-heres-what-alex-garlands-fx-tv-series-is-about/ https://briefnews.eu/devs-heres-what-alex-garlands-fx-tv-series-is-about/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 22:39:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/devs-heres-what-alex-garlands-fx-tv-series-is-about/ Devs

Writer/director Alex Garland left a huge mark with his 2015 directorial debut Ex Machina and sliced his way through our psyches in a much different way with this year’s Annihilation. Last month, we heard he would be following that up with a new science fiction TV series for FX. Now the cable channel has officially ordered a pilot, and we know the show is called Devs. Read on to learn some plot details about Garland’s new sci-fi show.

Deadline reports that FX has commissioned a pilot for Devs, which Garland wrote and will direct. Here’s their description for the new show, which is being described as a “tech thriller”:

In Devs, a young computer engineer, Lily, investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend.

Garland previously stated that this show would have more in common with Never Let Me Go (which he wrote) or Ex Machina than with the more hallucinogenic Annihilation, and after reading that breakdown, I’m getting a very Ex Machina vibe. That film centered on an enigmatic creator of a cutting-edge tech company that’s responsible for some sketchy shit, and it seems as if Garland is using a similar framework here.

This also sounds like much more of a fast-paced thriller than anything Garland has handled before, which is exciting. And while that premise may seem traditional on paper, Garland’s previous work proves that he’s rarely’s content to work on a project that’s straight down the middle. He tends to fold cerebral, haunting messages into his work, and I expect Devs to be a bit more challenging than its description indicates.

We know Garland will write and direct the show’s pilot, but will he have time to helm every episode of the series (assuming it gets picked up)? In an interview with Fandango, Garland explained that Devs would be an eight-part show and that while he’d like to direct each part, that’s still up in the air. “It’s already written [and] my plan at the moment is to direct the eight episodes, but for practical reasons that might not be possible,” he said.

Be sure to check out Annihilation, which is still in some theaters and is available on Netflix outside of the United States right now. For more from Alex Garland, read our full interview with him here.

PUBG servers DOWN as Battlegrounds devs release new update https://briefnews.eu/pubg-servers-down-as-battlegrounds-devs-release-new-update/ https://briefnews.eu/pubg-servers-down-as-battlegrounds-devs-release-new-update/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 03:10:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pubg-servers-down-as-battlegrounds-devs-release-new-update/

A lot of players will find themselves unable to access Battlegrounds on Steam tonight.

That’s because developers at Bluehole Inc. are performing scheduled maintenance tonight that’s going to last a few hours.

PUBG Servers will be down for around three hours, which is certainly going to eat into prime playtime for many.

It’s betters news for those PUBG fans in the UK, with maintenance beginning around 2am, and scheduled to end at 5am.

It’s never great to be locked out of a game, however, those in the United States will be much more badly affected.

“PC players, there will be a 3 hours maintenance period on our live servers starting at Mar 12 7PM PDT / Mar 13 3AM CET / Mar 13 11AM KST,” the PUBG Twitter account confirms.

Bluehole Inc have confirmed that they will be moving their current test build over to live servers tonight, so at least it will be worth it for fans at the end.

There’s the chance that this period of maintenance could be completed before the stated 3-hours, which has happened in the past.

There have been other times when the development team have needed an extra hour or two as well, so fans will want to keep checking the official social media channels for news.

Last week also saw PUBG go offline for around two hours, but didn’t provide any big changes.

However, tonight’s scheduled maintenance does include some tweaks, with each player having to update their game following the scheduled downtime.

Tonight’s patch is focused on bringing various optimisations to the PUBG server and client.

According to Bluehole Inc, this will include mitigating lag and stutter instances and alleviated frame drop and lag occurrences happening when players are pushed together.

This usually starts from the second half of a match, or in dynamic situations, like when groups of players meet in a firefight.

This should mean a smoother environment to play in, although it won’t include the new limb and vehicle penetration system.

This has been pushed back due to changes being made, so fans will have to wait to hear more about this.

The full PUBG patch notes can be found below and include all the official changes Bluehole are making today:

Client optimization

  • Improved real-time response by reducing input lag
  • Mitigated the frame drop issue caused by the map loading process
  • Reduced burden on GPU by optimizing buildings in Erangel
  • Optimized the beginning and the end of effects
  • Optimized vehicle physics when driving under a certain speed

Server optimization

  • Optimized server network performance
  • Optimized vehicle physics when driving under a certain speed

Lobby

  • Added PUBG friends list
  • Up to 50 people can be added as PUBG friends
  • Players with PUBG accounts can search and add friends freely regardless of the platform they are using (including Steam, Mail.ru and DMM)
  • Friend list is a one-way follower concept, not a mutual acceptance between players
  • PUBG friends list is independent of the Steam friends list. You don’t have to be friends on Steam to be friends in PUBG
  • Up to 30 players you were recently in a team with will be shown on RECENT
  • Added main menu voice chat
  • You can chat with the players in your team while still in the main menu
  • When using the voice chat, a speaker icon will be displayed on the right of the player’s name
  • Removed the function of being able to invite a player from their career screen due to a technical issue

PUBG Servers DOWN as Battlegrounds devs launch new update https://briefnews.eu/pubg-servers-down-as-battlegrounds-devs-launch-new-update/ https://briefnews.eu/pubg-servers-down-as-battlegrounds-devs-launch-new-update/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 04:47:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pubg-servers-down-as-battlegrounds-devs-launch-new-update/

Developers at Bluehole Inc. are performing scheduled maintenance tonight that’s going to leave a lot of players on the sidelines.

PUBG Servers are down for the next three hours, meaning that a lot of prime time playing in certain regions is being eaten up.

Battlegrounds status will be offline until around 5am, UK, or 9pm PST.

“PC players, our live servers are now down for maintenance and we expect the maintenance to last for 3 hours. Apologies for the inconvenience,” the PUBG Twitter account confirms.

There’s the chance that this period of maintenance could be completed before the stated 3-hours, which has happened in the past.

There have been other times when the development team have needed an extra hour or two as well, so fans will want to keeping checking the official social media channels for news.

Bluehole Inc. has also confirmed that this latest PUBG downtime will not end with big changes to the game, although players will have to download a small patch.

No new content is being added with this latest maintenance, instead, changes are being implemented the PUBG backend systems.

A new test build is being worked on, however, this won’t be ready for live launch today.

This next update will be going to test servers first, and looks set to include some big changes.

“We are going to be introducing an in-game friend system, voice chat in main menu and vehicle and limb penetration system,” a Bluehole Inc. message explains.

“We are going to need your feedback on all the new features, especially the new penetration system, so please join our test servers later this week. Detailed patch notes will be posted in a couple of days.”

Flight-sim devs say hidden password-dump tool was used to fight pirates [Updated] https://briefnews.eu/flight-sim-devs-say-hidden-password-dump-tool-was-used-to-fight-pirates-updated/ https://briefnews.eu/flight-sim-devs-say-hidden-password-dump-tool-was-used-to-fight-pirates-updated/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 04:39:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flight-sim-devs-say-hidden-password-dump-tool-was-used-to-fight-pirates-updated/

The usually staid world of professional-grade flight simulations was rocked by controversy over the weekend, with fans accusing mod developer FlightSimLabs (FSLabs) of distributing “malware” with an add-on package for Lockheed Martin’s popular Prepar3d simulation. The developer insists the hidden package was intended as an anti-piracy tool but has removed what it now acknowledges was a “heavy-handed” response to the threat of people stealing its add-on.

The controversy started Sunday when Reddit user crankyrecursion noticed that FSLabs’ Airbus A320-X add-on package was setting off his antivirus scanner. FSLabs had already recommended users turn off their antivirus protection when installing the add-on, so this wasn’t an isolated issue.

The reason for the warning, as crankyrecursion found, was that the installer seemed to be extracting a “test.exe” file that matched a “Chrome Password Dump” tool that can be found online. As the name implies, that tool appears to extract passwords saved in the Chrome Web browser—not something you’d expect to find in a flight-sim add-on. The fact that the installer necessarily needs to run with enhanced permissions increased the security threat from the “Password Dump.”
