  • House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes of California said he received the document that shows the Justice Department’s reasoning for launching its Russia probe.
  • Nunes issued subpoenas and fought for the release of the document.
  • He threatened to hold deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein and FBI director Christopher Wray in contempt and move to impeach them if they didn’t comply.

House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes of California said that he and Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina “finally” received the document that reveals the justification for the Justice Department’s Russia probe — one day after he said he had a plan “to impeach” senior Justice Department officials.

“After numerous unfulfilled requests for an Electronic Communication (EC) related to the opening of the FBI’s Russia counterintelligence probe, Chairman Trey Gowdy and I met this afternoon with Attorney General Rod Rosenstein,” Nunes said in a statement.

  • House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes of California suggested he has a plan to target deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein and FBI director Christopher Wray.
  • Nunes said he has a “plan to hold in contempt and to impeach” the men. His comments one day after federal agents raided the home and office of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer.
  • Nunes also railed against special counsel Robert Mueller, who he accused of being “good at leaking, but not so good at finding major felony leakers.”

House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes of California suggested he has a plan to target deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein and FBI director Christopher Wray.

“We’re not going to just hold in contempt, we will have a plan to hold in contempt and to impeach,” Nunes said to Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Tuesday evening.

  • US Attorney General Jeff Sessions had glowing words for his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, hours before the Devin Nunes memo was released on Friday.
  • At a Justice Department event, Sessions said Rosenstein and Rosenstein’s deputy, Rachel Brand, represent “the kind of quality and leadership that we want in the department.”
  • Sessions’ praise for Rosenstein and Brand caught some attention in part because the Nunes memo attempts to implicate Rosenstein, among others, in accusations of improper surveillance at the FBI and the DOJ.
  • The attorney general’s comments gained further significance after the memo came out, when Trump said “you figure that one out” in response to questions about whether he would seek to fire Rosenstein,

Attorney General Jeff Sessions praised his second-in-command, Rod Rosenstein, hours before the disputed Devin Nunes memo came out on Friday.

Sessions was preparing to speak at a Justice Department event when he paused to applaud Rosenstein and associate attorney general Rachel Brand after she had introduced Sessions to the audience.

Devin Nunes is a ‘Russian agent’ & other ways media peddle ‘Russiagate’ fables https://briefnews.eu/devin-nunes-is-a-russian-agent-other-ways-media-peddle-russiagate-fables/ https://briefnews.eu/devin-nunes-is-a-russian-agent-other-ways-media-peddle-russiagate-fables/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 22:07:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/devin-nunes-is-a-russian-agent-other-ways-media-peddle-russiagate-fables/ Just when you think fake news about Russia could not get any more bizarre, mainstream media outshines itself, again. These days, no story about Russia is too wild to print.

Here are just a few of the many Russia conspiracy stories now littering the landscape ever since fictional tales of the ‘Russian bogeyman’ seized the American imagination. Since it has become practically an article of faith among so many media pundits that President Donald Trump is a Kremlin puppet, it would not be amiss to suggest the same about other high-ranking Republicans.

So, was anybody really surprised when MSNBC ‘analyst’ John Heilemann suggested that Republican congressman Devin Nunes, who serves as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has been “compromised by the Russians?”

In an interview with Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, Heilemann ventured so far into the realms of conspiracy theory folklore that he was forced to concede his question was “ridiculous and absurd.” But he went ahead anyway.

“Is it possible that the Republican chairman of the House Intel Committee has been compromised by the Russians?” Heilemann asked with a straight face. “Is it possible that we actually have a Russian agent running the House Intel Committee on the Republican side?”

The question appeared to have stumped Murphy; as he stumbled and stammered during his response. “I-I-I-I-I-hope that’s not the case and I certainly have no information to suggest that it is,” he said. Heilemann, however, was having none of it, referring to unnamed “people in the intelligence community” who purportedly think exactly as Heilemann does.

“Doesn’t his behavior speak of that though,” the ‘analyst’ pressed on, no longer concerned that his question was patently absurd. “I’m not the first person who’s raised this. He’s behaving like someone who’s compromised and there are people in the intelligence community and others with great expertise in this area who look at him and say, ‘That guy’s been compromised.’”

Murphy would only say there are Republicans who “instinctively act in a way to protect their president.” Whatever that means. Later, Heilemann presented the very same question in exactly the same fashion to another Democratic congressman, Eric Swalwell, with the same result.

Non-news on Nunes continues…

However, the Heilemann episode was just one media fiasco that the under-fire Nunes would be forced to endure. This week, the Daily Beast wrote a story about the now-infamous memo man, entitled: “Did Devin Nunes Work With White House on Anti-FBI Memo? ‘Far as I Know, No.’”

The story opens with the assertion that the House Intelligence Committee Chair “refused to answer behind closed doors if he coordinated with the president’s team on his report blasting Rosenstein, Comey, and McCabe.”

The article said that Rep. Mike Quigley, a Democrat, asked Nunes if he had communicated with the White House when crafting the memo. “Nunes made a few comments that didn’t answer the question before finally responding, ‘I’m not answering,’” the Daily Beast reported, citing anonymous sources.

Once again, there’s just one problem with that version of events. The quote attributed to Nunes by the Daily Beast – “I’m not answering” – appears nowhere in the exchange according to a transcript of the meeting released later. A review of the record makes clear that Nunes answered the question before returning to committee business and allowing other members to speak about the pending business or make additional motions.

The Federalist summarized the glaringly fake news by saying: “Once again, reporters got burned by believing anonymous Democrats on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.”

Now if the mainstream media is so ready to pass off false news on a high-ranking US official, what chance does Russia has in getting a fair go? The odds are little to none.

Flimsy Flynn allegations

It is a notable rarity these days that Western mainstream media will suffer any consequences for breaking the rules of journalism and circulating unsubstantiated news, especially when it comes to Russia. That is precisely what made the massive fallout from a recent ABC News nothing burger story about Russia so, well, delicious.

Journalist Brian Ross © Brad Barket

On December 1, ABC News ace investigative reporter Brian Ross stated that an anonymous source had confided that a close associate of retired general Michael Flynn, who briefly served as Trump’s National Security Advisor, was ready to testify that the US president had “directed him to make contact with the Russians” during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The news reverberated around the world like a thunderbolt, even helping to knock 350 points off of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Ross later corrected the report on ABC News’ ‘World News Tonight,’ clarifying that the source who had provided the information was mistaken, and that Trump was actually president-elect at the time he asked Flynn to contact Russia.

But the damage was already done.

Then White House press secretary Sean Spicer said ABC “news” owes it viewers an apology. Calling false reporting a “clarification” is a cop out and just another reason for the decline in trusting the media.

Ross was slapped with a four-week suspension without pay. In other words, a little vacation.

Sweet but not quite 17

Anyone who watched the US presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Trump is familiar with the claim that all 17 US intelligence agencies agreed that Russia was behind the hack of Democratic emails in an effort to influence the 2016 election in favor of Republican candidate Trump.

Once again, the media fudged its facts, this time committing a rather unforgivable arithmetic error.

As The New York Times was forced to admit in a correction, dated June 29, 2017: “The assessment was made by four intelligence agencies — the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency. The assessment was not approved by all 17 organizations in the American intelligence community.”

It bears repeating, though, that at least one of those organizations – the FBI – reportedly features prominently in the promised memo to be released by Nunes sometime this week. Whether that document will provide evidence to suggest some level of collusion against Trump – and, by extension, Russia – remains to be seen.

WashPo worried in can’t find Russian hackers… in Germany

As if to provide the world with assurances that the American media is seemingly going back to its fledgling stages of development, the Washington Post in September ran a story on the eve of German elections that worriedly wondered: “Where are the Russians?”

So, as Germans were preparing to head to the polls, the Washington Post, not willing to let the fairytale be easily forgotten, appeared very concerned about the the whereabouts of the ‘Russian hackers.’

“Have Germany’s defensive measures… actually succeeded,” the preeminent promulgator of pulp fiction asked. “Or has Russia decided to pull back, reckoning that the costs of antagonizing Merkel outweigh the benefits?”

The one theory the newspaper failed to consider is that Russia just might be telling the truth when it says it did not meddle in the US election, or any other democratic process for that matter. But that would mean many politicians being forced to face the prospect that they are just not as popular with their public as they believe they are.

  • Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, has accused his Republican counterpart Devin Nunes of altering a controversial secret GOP memo after Republicans voted to release it, and sending the modified version to the White House for review.
  • The memo in question accuses the FBI and Justice Department of improperly surveilling a Trump campaign adviser during the 2016 election, and follows a Republican-led effort to expose anti-Trump bias at the FBI and DOJ.
  • The White House had five days to decide whether to publish the memo after the committee voted on Monday to release it.
  • Schiff asserted that the modified memo delivered to the White House includes “material changes” other committee members were not informed of, and had no opportunity to approve.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, accused chairman Devin Nunes of modifying a controversial Republican memo that accuses the FBI and Justice Department of improperly surveilling a Trump campaign adviser during the 2016 election.

House Intel Committee Republicans voted on Monday to release that memo, despite Justice Department warnings that such a move would be “extraordinarily reckless” because of questions over its accuracy.

Devin Nunes is under mounting pressure to release the transcript of a House Intel interview with Fusion GPS https://briefnews.eu/devin-nunes-is-under-mounting-pressure-to-release-the-transcript-of-a-house-intel-interview-with-fusion-gps/ https://briefnews.eu/devin-nunes-is-under-mounting-pressure-to-release-the-transcript-of-a-house-intel-interview-with-fusion-gps/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2018 04:21:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/devin-nunes-is-under-mounting-pressure-to-release-the-transcript-of-a-house-intel-interview-with-fusion-gps/ devin nunesAP Photo/J. • Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee want its Republican chairman, Devin Nunes, to release the transcript of the panel’s interview with Fusion GPS cofounder Glenn Simpson.
  • Fusion GPS wants the transcript released, too.
  • The House Democrats can’t distribute the transcript unilaterally, like the Senate Judiciary Democrats did, because the House committee’s rules require Republicans’ consent.

The House Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat is calling on the panel’s Republican majority to release the transcript of the panel’s November interview with Glenn Simpson, the cofounder of the opposition research firm Fusion GPS.

“In light of the selective leaks of Mr. Simpson’s testimony and the misleading manner in which Fusion GPS’ role has been characterized, I support releasing the transcript,” Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the panel’s ranking member, said in a statement through his office on Monday.

“The Majority has released transcripts of Dr. Page and Mr. Prince when it suited their interests, and likewise should make an exception here,” Schiff added, referring to Carter Page, an early Trump campaign aide, and Erik Prince, an informal adviser to Trump’s transition team.

A spokeswoman for Fusion GPS, the Washington, D.C.-based opposition research firm that hired the former British spy Christopher Steele to research then-candidate Donald Trump’s ties to Russia, said on Monday that Fusion supports the release of the transcript. The firm had even sent a letter to the committee to that effect, she said, but it has not yet been publicly released.

“Schiff agrees with Mr. Simpson that the transcript should be released, and has made that request of the Majority,” a Democratic aide said on Monday.

But unlike Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein — who distributed the transcript of Simpson’s August interview with the Senate Judiciary Committee last week without Republicans’ consent — Schiff does not have the unilateral authority to release interview transcripts under committee and House rules.

“The Senate Judiciary Committee does not have the same rules governing the release of transcripts as HPSCI does,” the aide noted. Under HPSCI rules, the transcribed interviews may not be disclosed to the public unless authorized by the committee, which would require the Majority’s consent.

“Under HPSCI rules, transcribed interviews are taken in executive session and may not be disclosed to the public unless authorized by the Committee.”

The committee’s chairman, GOP Rep. Devin Nunes has been conducting a parallel investigation into Fusion’s activities during the 2016 election. He subpoenaed the firm’s bank records last year to learn more about its clients, and a judge ruled earlier this month that the panel was entitled to those records.

Fusion plans to appeal that decision, citing First Amendment violations and arguing that Nunes’ requests are politically motivated.

It is still unclear whether committee Republicans even knew about Nunes’ subpoenas to Fusion, which included requests for documents and interviews.

Simpson and Peter Fritsch, another Fusion GPS cofounder, appeared before the committee in October in response to a subpoena, but pleaded the fifth during their interview. Simpson struck a deal with House investigators and returned for a voluntary interview in November that lasted more than seven hours.

Amid his fight for more transparency from Fusion, however, Nunes has given no indication so far that he plans to release the November transcript. Nunes’ spokesman did not return a request for comment.

There are signs that the House investigators’ line of questioning was more extensive than that of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is another reason why the panel’s Democrats and Fusion want the transcript to be made public.

Simpson and Fritsch wrote earlier this month in a New York Times op-ed that they “suggested investigators look into the bank records of Deutsche Bank and others that were funding Mr. Trump’s businesses.”

Deutsche Bank was not mentioned in Simpson’s interview with the Senate Judiciary, indicating that it was brought up during his only other congressional interview with the House panel.

Schiff said in a statement late last year that Democrats had asked Republicans to subpoena Deutsche Bank, but Republicans had refused, despite “repeated requests.”

The committee has only issued one subpoena to a financial institution in the year since it opened its investigation into Russia’s election interference and potential collusion between Trump’s campaign team and Moscow.

The subpoena was to Fusion’s bank rather than to Deutsche Bank, which was fined last year over its involvement in a major Russian money-laundering scheme and has been the Trump family’s bank of choice for decades.

  • Rep. Devin Nunes, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, attended a breakfast meeting where Michael Flynn and Turkey’s foreign minister were also present.
  • The breakfast took place just before President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
  • A report Friday indicated that special counsel Robert Mueller is scrutinizing Flynn’s dealings with the Turkish government.

Republican Rep. Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, attended a breakfast meeting in January that then-incoming national security adviser Michael Flynn and Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu also attended.

The breakfast event, held on Wednesday, January 18, was closed to the press, and it is still unclear exactly what was discussed.

The Washington correspondent for the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, which tends to be pro-government, reported at the time that an aide to Cavusoglu said he “was the only foreign leader at the breakfast and the topics on the US-Turkish agenda were discussed by the attendees.”

The paper obtained the invitation letter for the breakfast, which said it would “be a small event for about 50-60 guests. It also said White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus might join the meeting.”

Nunes’ spokesman, who did not return a request for comment on Friday, issued a previous statement downplaying the importance of the breakfast.

“Chairman Nunes was a speaker at that event, but it was a large breakfast event, not a small, private meeting as described in that article,” the spokesman, Jack Langer, told the fact-checking website Snopes earlier this year.

He continued:

“Mr. Cavusoglu was one of about 40 attendees at the event, which included 20-30 ambassadors to the U.S. and about 10 other foreign dignitaries and officials. The attendees heard some remarks from Flynn, Chairman Nunes, and other representatives on national security issues — the discussion topic was not Turkey or any other single country … if [Nunes did speak to Cavusoglu], it would’ve been among all the other ambassadors and officials at the event. There was no separate, private meeting.”

Nunes’ attendance at the event is newly relevant amid revelations that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating a meeting another congressman, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, took with Flynn in September. Flynn had begun lobbying on behalf of Turkish government interests one month earlier, in August.

New scrutiny of Flynn’s dealings with Turkey

FILE PHOTO - U.S. National Security Advisor Michael Flynn boards Air Force One at West Palm Beach International airport in West Palm Beach, Florida U.S. on February 12, 2017. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/FilesThomson ReutersThat lobbying work continued into the presidential transition and through December, according to a new report in the Wall Street Journal. Mueller is scrutinizing an alleged plot involving Flynn that would have returned an exiled Turkish cleric to the country.

It is unclear whether Flynn was still being paid to lobby for Turkish government interests by the time he attended the breakfast meeting on January 18.

But on January 10, Flynn reportedly met with then-national security adviser Susan Rice and asked her to hold off on implementing an anti-ISIS plan that would involve arming the Syrian Kurds. The Turkish government is vehemently opposed to any plan that would empower the Kurds, whom Ankara views as a threat to Turkey’s sovereignty.

Nunes, meanwhile, has been at the center of a series of controversies since the House Intelligence Committee began investigating Russia’s election interference.

The California Republican stepped aside from the Russia investigation in early April following his decision to brief Trump and the press on classified intelligence — without telling his fellow committee members. But he quickly began conducting his own investigation into “unmaskings” by the Obama administration and the credibility of the dossier alleging ties between President Donald Trump’s campaign team and Russia.

In June, Nunes angered the Democrats when he demanded more details from the CIA, FBI, and NSA about why Obama administration officials requested the unmasking of Trump associates last year. He also threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Chris Wray in contempt of Congress last month if they did not respond to a subpoena for documents relating to the Steele dossier.

Texas church shooting: What we know about alleged gunman Devin Kelley https://briefnews.eu/texas-church-shooting-what-we-know-about-alleged-gunman-devin-kelley/ https://briefnews.eu/texas-church-shooting-what-we-know-about-alleged-gunman-devin-kelley/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2017 03:18:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/texas-church-shooting-what-we-know-about-alleged-gunman-devin-kelley/

A man identified in some media reports as Devin Patrick Kelley has gunned down 26 people and injured at least 20 more in an attack on Sutherland Springs Baptist Church, before he was found dead in his car. Here is what we know about the alleged attacker.

Speculation has been rife in the media about the identity of the man behind “the largest mass shooting” in Texas’s history, as described by Governor Greg Abbot. While the police have yet to officially identify the perpetrator, some US media have already come up with the name of Devin Kelley, citing law enforcement sources close to the investigation.

Kelley is said to be 26 years old and a resident of New Braunfels, a city near San Antonio, located some 30 miles from the site of the attack. As it appears from his Facebook account, since taken down, he was a fan of guns, with his cover photo showing an assault rifle. Purported screenshots of his FB page, whose authenticity cannot be immediately confirmed, appear to feature an Antifascist Action banner, which sparked speculation online about his ties to the left-wing scene.

A LinkedIn page purportedly belonging to Kelly states that after he graduated from high school in 2009, he joined the US Air Force. CBS reported that Kelley served from 2010 to 2014, when he was dishonorably discharged and was court-martialed in May 2014 over an unspecified offense.

After his stint with the US military, Kelly reportedly enrolled in a summer Bible school. It is unknown if he was religious or not, as a screenshot of his Facebook groups list shows he was a member of at least four groups on atheism.
Kelley was married, with CBS reporting his wife’s name as Danielle Lee Shields.

Kelley was wielding an assault rifle when he went on a shooting rampage in the church, with Freeman Martin, the DPS Regional Director, saying that police discovered “multiple weapons” in his car. However, the Gun Control Act of 1968 explicitly prohibits licensed sellers from selling firearms or ammunition to persons who have “been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions.”

Kelley’s relatives said they were shocked by the attack and could not imagine he was capable of such an atrocity.

“I never in a million years could have believed Devin could be capable of this kind of thing,” Kelley’s uncle Dave Ivey said, as cited by NBC news, calling the massacre of churchgoers a “cowardly action” for which his whole family would have to suffer.

The US Air Force confirmed that Devin Kelley served in the 49th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base, spokeswoman Ann Stefanek told NBC. However, she did not identify the cause of his discharge in 2014.
